Use the U.S. Census Bureau’s USA Trade Online state-export report. Choose Exports, set the state’s Origin of Movement, select an HS or NAICS commodity level, choose a destination country or World Total, pick a measure such as value, and add monthly or annual periods. Run the report, download it as CSV, XLSX, or JSON, and calculate changes only after keeping every filter constant. For recurring pulls, use the Census International Trade API; TradeStats Express is a useful visual cross-check.
Where can I find my state’s export numbers?
USA Trade Online is the primary official starting point for state export data. Its state-level exports product lets you combine geography, commodity, destination, measure, and time period in one report. The coverage includes all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

You can ask questions such as:
- What is the total value of goods exported from my state?
- What does my state export to a particular country?
- How did a product category change from one year to the next?
- Which months drove a rise or decline?
The same system supports monthly, annual, and cumulative year-to-date periods, although the exact historical range depends on the report and series you select. A report is useful only when you record its settings: state definition, commodity system and code, destination scope, measure, time frequency, and the date or vintage of the download.

Census assigns state exports by Origin of Movement. The U.S. Census Bureau’s USA Trade Online Quick Start Guide defines it this way: State Exports are Origin of Movement, which is the state where the goods begin its journey to the port of export.

That definition identifies where the goods start their trip to the export port. It does not necessarily identify a company’s headquarters, the factory that made the product, the seller of record, or the state where the final customer is located. A shipment can therefore be credited to a state that differs from the location most people associate with the company involved.
Do not substitute a port-of-export series or a state-of-destination series. State imports use a different concept, State of Destination. When you compare states, make sure every state is measured with the same Origin of Movement definition.
How to find a state’s export data in USA Trade Online
1. Open the state-level exports product
Start in USA Trade Online and choose the product for state-level exports. The exports and imports products answer different questions, so verify that the report is for exports before setting any other filters.

Select the state you are studying in the State of Origin field. Use the state itself, not a port and not a State of Destination value. If you are preparing a comparison, repeat the same report structure for each state and change only the state field.
3. Choose a commodity classification
Select either the Harmonized System (HS) or the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), then record the code and its description.

HS and NAICS are not interchangeable labels for the same series. A product question such as “aircraft parts” may fit an HS code, while an industry question may be better expressed with a NAICS grouping. Save the exact code, level, and description because changing any of them changes the population of goods in the series.
4. Set the destination country
Choose a named destination for a bilateral question, such as exports from your state to one country. Choose World Total or the all-countries option for the state’s overall exports. Do not compare a country-specific series with a World Total series and call the difference a state trend; they measure different scopes.
5. Select the measure
Use total export value when you need a headline dollar trend. Census also provides shipping weight and transportation-related measures. Add those measures only when they answer a separate question, such as whether tonnage changed differently from dollar value. A value series and a weight series should never be described as if they were the same quantity.

6. Configure the time period
Choose annual periods for a clean long-run comparison. Add monthly periods when seasonality, a sudden disruption, or a turning point matters. The Quick Start Guide describes state exports as available monthly and annually, while the historical documentation identifies monthly API coverage from 2013 onward for the relevant state-trade data. Product-specific availability can vary, so check the period selector in the report you are using.
Use cumulative year-to-date periods when you need an in-year running total. Label a result explicitly as monthly, year-to-date, or annual; a December monthly value is not the same thing as a full-year total.
7. Run the report and inspect it
Before interpreting a number, inspect the returned table’s period labels, units, state, commodity code and description, destination, and measure. Confirm that the selected state is still shown as the origin and that the periods cover what you intended. This check catches many errors that look like economic changes but are actually filter changes.
8. Export and preserve the query
The current user guide lists JSON, CSV, and XLSX downloads. Keep the raw file unchanged and save a note containing the report name, state, classification, code, destination, measure, frequency, selected periods, and download date. That record lets another person reproduce the series or explain a revision later.

How to see what your state exports to a specific country
Use a named destination in the country dimension while leaving the state, commodity, measure, and time settings explicit. For a country-to-country comparison, run separate reports for each destination with every other axis unchanged. For example, a report for State A to Country X and another for State A to Country Y are comparable only if both use the same HS or NAICS code, value or weight measure, and monthly or annual periods.
If the question is “How much does the state export overall?”, use World Total rather than adding a handful of countries yourself. A manually assembled list can omit destinations and will not necessarily match the all-countries total.
How to compare state exports year over year
Hold these dimensions constant:
- Geography definition: Origin of Movement for every state.
- Commodity system, code, and level: the same HS or NAICS selection.
- Destination scope: the same country or World Total.
- Measure: value, weight, or transportation measure, without switching between them.
- Time frequency: full calendar year against full calendar year, or the same month against the same month.
- Data vintage: note when each file was downloaded because current periods and historical values can be revised.
Absolute change
Subtract the earlier value from the later value:
absolute change = later value − earlier value
Keep the unit attached to the result. If the series is in dollars, report dollars; if it is in kilograms, report kilograms. A negative result indicates a decline under the selected definition.
Percentage change
When the earlier value is not zero, calculate:
percentage change = (later value − earlier value) / earlier value × 100

For an illustrative calculation, a move from 100 to 125 is an absolute increase of 25 and a percentage increase of 25%. The values in that example are arithmetic, not a reported state statistic.
When the earlier value is zero
If the earlier period is zero, report the absolute change and state that a percentage rate is undefined. Do not describe the result as an infinite or 100% increase; the usual percentage formula has a zero denominator.
Monthly seasonality
When shipments follow a seasonal pattern, compare the same month in successive years rather than comparing adjacent months. January against February can reflect a normal calendar pattern, while January this year against January last year is a cleaner year-over-year comparison. For a shock or turning point, show the monthly series as well as the annual total so readers can see when the movement occurred.
Annual and year-to-date comparisons
Compare complete calendar years with complete calendar years. For an in-year update, compare the same year-to-date cutoff in both years—for example, January through the latest available month in each year. Do not compare a full prior year with a partial current year without labeling the mismatch.
Can I download state export data to Excel?
Yes. Choose XLSX in the report’s export options. CSV is often simpler for a flat table, while XLSX is convenient when you want to retain spreadsheet formatting and add formulas or charts. JSON is preferable when a script will retrieve and transform the data repeatedly.
Keep the original download separate from your working file. In the working copy, add columns for absolute change and percentage change, but do not overwrite the raw values. Include the query settings on a separate worksheet or in a text file so a later update uses the same filters.
Using the International Trade API for recurring pulls
The Census International Trade API is the repeatable option when you need a scheduled monthly retrieval or a pipeline that refreshes several states. The historical documentation identifies monthly API coverage from 2013 to the present for the relevant state-trade data. Confirm the exact available periods and fields for the series you select.
Design an API pull around a fixed parameter set:
- Store the Origin of Movement state code or identifier.
- Store the HS or NAICS system and the exact commodity code.
- Store the destination scope, including whether it is a named country or World Total.
- Store the measure and unit.
- Request one clearly defined period frequency, such as month or year.
- Save the returned file together with the retrieval date and query parameters.
Do not silently change a parameter when updating the series. If a classification is revised or a code is replaced, start a new documented series or annotate the break rather than joining unlike values.

TradeStats Express as a cross-check
TradeStats Express is a Department of Commerce dashboard for state exports and imports by product and partner, using Census-published data. It can be convenient for visual exploration and a quick cross-check. When precision or reproducibility matters, document the exact Census series from USA Trade Online or the International Trade API that supports your calculation. A dashboard view should not replace recording the underlying state definition, code, destination, measure, and period.

A state ranking is meaningful only when the underlying definitions match. Use this checklist before comparing totals or growth rates:

If one state has a product code available only at a different level, either select a common level for both or disclose that the comparison uses different detail. Do not create a false ranking by forcing unmatched categories into one table.

Confusing origin of movement with the company’s location
Symptom: The reported state does not match a company headquarters or manufacturing site you expected.
Fix: Explain that Census credits the state where the goods begin their journey to the export port. Treat the result as a shipment-origin measure, not a corporate-location census.
Switching between HS and NAICS
Symptom: A trend changes sharply after a code or classification menu was updated.
Fix: Record the system, level, code, and description for each download. Re-run both periods under one consistent classification before attributing the difference to trade activity.

Fix: Use the same named country in both periods, or use World Total in both periods. State the scope in the chart title and table header.
Comparing value with weight
Symptom: Dollar growth and shipment weight appear to tell opposite stories.
Fix: Keep value and weight as separate measures. A change in prices, product mix, or freight composition can make the two series diverge.

Using the latest month as a settled figure
Symptom: A recent monthly result is treated as final even though a later release changes it.
Fix: Treat the latest month as provisional for narrative purposes and recheck the source before publication. Record the retrieval date so readers know which vintage you used.
Calling a partial year an annual result
Symptom: January-through-June is compared with the previous full calendar year.
Fix: Label the first value year-to-date and compare it with the same months in the prior year, or wait for full-year data.

Reporting a percentage change from zero
Symptom: A spreadsheet returns an error or an implausibly large rate.
Fix: Report the absolute increase and say that a percentage rate is undefined because the base period is zero.
Assuming every historical period exists in every report
Symptom: A requested month or code is unavailable.
Fix: Check the selected product’s period and classification availability. State exports are documented across monthly, annual, and cumulative year-to-date periods, but the exact range depends on the series.
