Open your COLA notice in the Message Center of your personal my Social Security account, or use the paper notice mailed by the Social Security Administration (SSA). Find the new monthly benefit amount and the deductions listed below it. Compare the new amount with your previous benefit. That difference is your personal increase. The headline COLA percentage is not a guaranteed percentage change in your deposit because SSA applies the adjustment through its benefit formula, then accounts for retirement factors, deductions and rounding.
Start with the personalized notice, not the headline percentage
A COLA announcement tells you the national adjustment rate. Your notice tells you what SSA calculated for you. The simplified notice is designed to show your exact new benefit, the effective date and deductions in dollar amounts. Those personal figures are the authoritative answer to “How much did my Social Security payment increase?”

You can receive the information in either of two ways:
- Online: Sign in to your personal my Social Security account and open the Message Center. Look for the COLA notice for the applicable year.
- By mail: Read the paper COLA notice sent to your mailing address. SSA mails notices according to that year’s schedule.
Online availability, mailing dates and account-eligibility rules can change from one COLA year to the next. If you are looking for a current notice, use the Message Center and the current COLA information provided by SSA rather than relying on a deadline from an older announcement.

Where the increase appears in the notice
1. Identify the new monthly benefit
Find the line that states your new Social Security benefit amount, usually paired with the month when the adjusted amount applies. This is the recalculated benefit before any deductions shown elsewhere on the notice. Record the amount exactly as printed, including cents.
2. Find the deductions
Read every deduction line separately. A Medicare Supplementary Medical Insurance premium, for example, may be withheld from the recalculated benefit. Other offsets or withholdings can also affect what reaches your bank account. The notice’s deduction total is more useful than trying to infer a deduction from the size of your deposit.
3. Locate the resulting payment
If the notice shows a payment after deductions, treat that as the amount expected to be paid. If it does not show a final payment line, subtract the listed deductions from the new benefit only after confirming that you are comparing the same month and benefit type. Your bank deposit can differ for timing or other account-level reasons, so use the notice to establish the benefit calculation first.

4. Compare with the previous amount
Use the prior monthly amount from an earlier notice, your SSA account history or your own records. Subtract the old amount from the new amount:
Personal increase = new monthly benefit − previous monthly benefit
Do this comparison twice when necessary: once for the gross benefit and once for the amount after deductions. Keeping those comparisons separate shows whether a change came from the COLA calculation or from a deduction.
Read the notice as four separate numbers
People often compare the COLA percentage with their bank deposit and conclude that the notice is wrong. The notice becomes easier to understand when you separate four stages:

| Stage | What it means | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Headline COLA | The nationally announced adjustment rate for the year. | The published rate, such as 2.8% for 2026. |
| Recalculated gross benefit | Your benefit after SSA applies the COLA and the rest of the benefit formula. | The new benefit line in the notice versus the previous gross benefit. |
| Deductions | Amounts withheld from the recalculated benefit, including applicable Medicare premiums or other offsets. | Each deduction line and its change from the prior notice. |
| Net payment | The amount left after deductions and scheduled withholdings. | The payment shown on the notice or your deposit after confirming the payment month. |
A percentage belongs to the first stage. Your personal increase is determined at the second stage, and your take-home change is determined only after the third and fourth stages.
Why your increase may not equal the COLA percentage
The COLA is applied to the primary insurance amount
SSA’s Office of the Chief Actuary describes the basic relationship this way: “A COLA increases a person’s Social Security retirement benefit by approximately the product of the COLA and the benefit amount.” “Approximately” matters. SSA first increases the primary insurance amount (PIA), then applies the individual’s retirement adjustments and other calculation steps.
Retirement timing adjustments remain part of the calculation
If you claimed retirement benefits early or earned delayed-retirement credits, those factors are applied in the calculation. The COLA does not erase them or reset your benefit to an unadjusted PIA. A person with the same pre-COLA payment as someone else can therefore have a different underlying calculation history and a different result after the adjustment.
SSA truncates and rounds at specified steps
SSA’s guidance uses truncation at designated points rather than simply multiplying the final deposit by a percentage and rounding to the nearest cent. Small differences can appear even before deductions are considered.
SSA’s published example starts with a PIA of $2,108.50. Applying the 2.8% COLA produces a calculated amount that is truncated to the next lower dime, resulting in a PIA of $2,167.50. The example demonstrates the mechanics; it is not a promise that an individual will receive that amount or a $59 increase.
Deductions can reduce the change in your deposit
A Medicare premium or another offset is subtracted after the benefit is recalculated. If that deduction rises, your gross benefit can increase while your net deposit increases by less, stays nearly level or changes in another direction. Compare the deduction line from the old notice with the deduction line from the new notice before judging the result.
How to calculate your own increase safely
- Write down the old gross amount. Use the previous notice or your SSA records for the same benefit category and payment basis.
- Write down the new gross amount. Copy the personalized amount from the COLA notice, including cents.
- Subtract old from new. This is the gross monthly increase.
- Record every deduction on both notices. Do not combine Medicare and other withholdings into an assumed single percentage.
- Calculate the net change. Subtract the old total deductions from the new total deductions, then compare the resulting payments.
- Check the effective month. Make sure the old and new figures refer to comparable months. A payment received in one calendar month can represent a different benefit month.
For a simple illustration, suppose a notice shows an old gross benefit of $1,500 and a new gross benefit of $1,542. The gross increase is $42. If deductions rise from $170 to $185, the net payment rises from $1,330 to $1,357, so the deposit increases by $27. The figures in this illustration are arithmetic examples, not SSA estimates or a prediction for any beneficiary.

What the 2026 COLA means
SSA announced a 2.8% COLA for 2026. It applies to Social Security benefits payable in January 2026. SSA based the adjustment on the change in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) from the third quarter of 2024 through the third quarter of 2025.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →SSA said the 2026 adjustment would increase Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments for approximately 75 million people. The agency also estimated an average increase of about $56 per month for Social Security retirement benefits beginning in January 2026. “Average” describes a population-level result, not an amount assigned to each person. Your notice controls your individual figure.
The 2026 percentage should not be carried forward to another year. The reviewed SSA summary stated that the next COLA announcement would be made in October 2026, but it did not establish a later percentage in the information available as of October 13, 2026. Do not use an unannounced figure to estimate your benefit.
Does Medicare come out of the COLA increase?
Medicare premiums are not a reduction to the COLA rate itself. They are a deduction from the recalculated Social Security benefit. That distinction explains why your gross benefit can rise by the amount shown in the notice while your bank deposit rises by less.
Check these lines in order:
- New gross Social Security benefit.
- Current Medicare premium or other medical-insurance deduction.
- Any additional offsets or withholdings.
- Net payment after all listed deductions.
If the premium or another deduction changed at the same time as the COLA, calculate the two changes independently. A larger deduction does not mean SSA failed to apply the COLA; it means the deduction reduced the amount paid to you.

If the notice is missing from your account
Check the Message Center
Sign in to the correct personal my Social Security account and open the Message Center rather than relying only on an email alert. Look for a notice labeled for the applicable COLA year and verify that the name and benefit information belong to you.
Allow for the year’s delivery schedule
SSA does not use one permanent notice date for every COLA. Online posting and mailed delivery follow the arrangements announced for that year. A missing paper notice does not by itself prove that the benefit was not adjusted.

Use your records while waiting
Your prior notice, payment history and bank statements can establish the old amount. They cannot replace the new personalized notice for confirming deductions, effective dates or a revised calculation, so avoid treating a rough percentage estimate as final.
Contact SSA about a personal discrepancy
If the notice and your payment do not match after you compare the same month, benefit type and deductions, contact SSA through its official channels and have the notice available. The agency can review your individual record; a general COLA announcement cannot identify why your particular amount differs.
Social Security benefits and SSI timing are not identical
SSA’s 2026 announcement discussed both Social Security benefits and SSI payments, but the programs can have different payment-timing contexts. Do not assume that a date mentioned for a Social Security retirement, disability or survivor benefit applies unchanged to SSI. Read the program name and effective date on your own notice.
This distinction also matters when comparing deposits. A payment received near the end or beginning of a month may reflect the program’s schedule rather than a different COLA calculation.
A quick review checklist
- Open the COLA notice in the Message Center or read the mailed notice.
- Confirm the benefit type and effective month.
- Copy the new gross monthly benefit exactly.
- List Medicare and every other deduction separately.
- Find the previous comparable gross amount.
- Subtract old gross from new gross to find the personal gross increase.
- Compare old and new deductions to explain the net-payment change.
- Use the 2.8% figure only as the 2026 national COLA, not as an individual forecast.
- Contact SSA if the notice, payment month and deductions still do not reconcile.
Common mistakes to avoid
Multiplying your deposit by 2.8%
The 2026 rate is not applied to the final bank deposit. It enters the benefit calculation through the PIA and is followed by retirement adjustments, truncation and deductions.
Using the average $56 increase as your answer
The approximately $56 figure is SSA’s average for retirement beneficiaries beginning in January 2026. It is not a minimum, maximum or individualized estimate.

Ignoring the month represented by a payment
Payment receipt dates and benefit months are not always identical. Match the effective month printed on the notice with the month represented in your records.
Assuming the next COLA is already known
Only use a percentage SSA has officially announced for the year you are analyzing. The available 2026 summary did not establish a later COLA amount.
When a calculator helps—and when it does not
A calculator can verify subtraction or show how a deduction changes a net payment. It cannot reproduce your official benefit calculation without your PIA, retirement timing, offsets, truncation rules and current deductions. Use a calculator as a checking tool after you have the notice, not as a substitute for it.
The same principle applies to generic worksheets and benefit estimates. They may help organize old and new figures, but only SSA’s personalized notice establishes the amount payable on your record.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where exactly do I find the new amount in a COLA notice?
Open the notice in the Message Center of your personal my Social Security account or read the mailed notice. Find the line showing your new monthly benefit, then read the deduction lines and any resulting payment shown below it.
Why did my payment increase by less than 2.8% in 2026?
The 2.8% rate is applied through SSA’s benefit formula rather than directly to your final deposit. Retirement adjustments, truncation and deductions such as Medicare premiums can make the change in your net payment smaller or otherwise different.
Is the approximately $56 2026 increase guaranteed?
No. SSA described about $56 as the average increase in Social Security retirement benefits beginning in January 2026. Your personalized notice determines your own amount.
What should I do if my notice and deposit do not match?
Verify that you are comparing the same benefit type and month, then compare the gross amount and each deduction separately. If the figures still do not reconcile, contact SSA with the notice available so it can review your individual record.
