The most reliable way to find U.S. tech employers that sponsor work visas is to combine three checks: historical H-1B petition activity in the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub, occupation and location evidence in Department of Labor (DOL) Labor Condition Application (LCA) records, and written confirmation that the specific vacancy is eligible for sponsorship. A company that filed an H-1B petition in the past is a useful lead, not a promise that it will sponsor your role.
Use the process below to build a defensible shortlist, verify current openings, and avoid wasting applications on jobs that cannot support your immigration timeline.

What “visa sponsorship” means in a tech job
In this context, sponsorship usually means an employer is willing to take the immigration steps needed for a foreign national to work in the United States. For a specialty-occupation technology role, that commonly involves obtaining a certified LCA from the DOL and filing Form I-129 with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for an H-1B petition.

- New H-1B filing: The company may sponsor a worker who is outside the United States or who needs a new cap-subject petition.
- Change of employer: A worker already in H-1B status may need an employer-change petition.
- Amendment: A material change in worksite or job terms can require an amended filing.
- Continuation: The employer may extend an existing H-1B employment relationship.
- Longer-term immigration support: Some employers also have a process for employment-based permanent residence, but that is a separate decision and should be confirmed independently.
A job advertisement that says “must have unrestricted work authorization” or “no sponsorship available” is different from one that says “sponsorship may be considered.” Treat ambiguous wording as unresolved until a recruiter confirms the policy for the exact role, worksite and start date.
Start with a precise target
Before searching employer records, define the job you can realistically accept. Your target determines which government records are relevant and prevents a large employer with unrelated filings from looking like a good match.
- Occupation: Examples include software developer, data scientist, systems analyst, security engineer or hardware engineer. Government records use occupational classifications, so identify the closest likely Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) code.
- Seniority: A company may sponsor experienced engineers but not entry-level hires, or may use different policies for interns, contractors and permanent employees.
- Location: List acceptable states, metropolitan areas and office locations. A remote arrangement may still require a specific worksite for immigration purposes.
- Education: Note your degree field and highest degree. Specialty-occupation eligibility depends on the relationship between the role and the required degree.
- Timing: Record your current status, expiration date, notice period and the date by which you need an employer to begin its process.
- Alternative classifications: If relevant, note whether you might qualify for H-1B1 or E-3 status. These categories have different eligibility rules and are not interchangeable with H-1B.
Write these criteria in a one-page search brief. Use the same brief when evaluating every employer so that high filing volume does not distract you from a poor occupation or location match.

Use the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub
USCIS launched the H-1B Employer Data Hub on April 1, 2019, to provide information about employers petitioning for H-1B workers. It is the best starting point for identifying employers with a documented petition history.
Search by employer and geography
- Open the H-1B Employer Data Hub and search the employer’s legal or commonly used name.
- Repeat the search with likely name variations, subsidiaries and major business units. A large organization may report more than one petitioner name or tax identification number.
- Filter by fiscal year to see whether activity is recent. Record the fiscal years in which the employer appears rather than relying on a single total.
- Use the available NAICS, state, city or ZIP filters to narrow results to the business activity and geography relevant to your target.
- Export or manually record the employer name, fiscal year, initial approvals, continuing approvals and location fields for your shortlist.
USCIS describes the hub as reporting adjudicated first decisions. Pending cases are excluded, as are later appeal or revocation decisions. A low count can therefore reflect timing or case-status limits rather than an absence of hiring.
Separate initial and continuing approvals
Do not combine every approval into one “sponsorship” number. USCIS uses initial approvals for new employment relationships and continuing approvals for matters such as continuing employment, changes of employer and amended petitions. A company with many continuing approvals may have a substantial existing H-1B workforce while filing fewer new petitions for external candidates.
Record the two categories in separate columns. For a candidate outside the United States, recent initial approvals may be more informative. For a candidate already in H-1B status, continuing approvals and employer-change activity may be the more relevant signal.

Understand the data’s limitations
The hub is built from employer-reported Form I-129 fields and USCIS adjudicative decisions. USCIS warns that data-entry or petitioner errors can affect the employer name, tax identification number, state, city or ZIP. The state and city are mailing-address fields and may not be the beneficiary’s actual work location.
That means a record can identify a legitimate petitioner without proving that the company sponsors your occupation, team, office or remote arrangement. Treat the hub as a screening database, not as a job board or an approval forecast.
Validate the employer with DOL LCA records
Before an employer can file an H-1B petition for a specialty-occupation worker, it generally needs a certified LCA from the DOL. Employers submit Form ETA-9035 or ETA-9035E electronically through the DOL’s FLAG system.
Check the occupation, worksite and wage
Compare the employer’s LCA information with the vacancy you are considering:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- SOC or occupation: A software-developer LCA is stronger evidence for a software-developer opening than for an unrelated marketing or support role.
- Worksite: Compare the listed city and state with the advertised office. If the position is remote or hybrid, ask where the employer will treat your place of work for the filing.
- Wage: The employer must attest to paying at least the higher of the actual wage for similarly qualified workers or the prevailing wage for the occupation and area of intended employment.
- Filing date: A recent LCA may better reflect current compensation and location practices than an old filing.
- Employment terms: Check whether the posting is permanent, full-time, part-time or tied to a third-party worksite. The LCA evidence should fit the actual arrangement.
The DOL’s required-wage rule is explicit: the actual wage is what the employer pays similarly experienced and qualified workers performing the same job, while the prevailing wage is the wage predominantly paid for that occupation in the area at the time of filing. An LCA does not tell you that an opening exists; it shows that an employer made the required attestations for a particular filing.
Use the public-access-file trail
DOL says an H-1B employer must make specified materials available to workers and the public within one working day of filing. The public-access file can include the LCA, the wage rate, an explanation of the actual-wage system, the source of the prevailing wage, notice documentation and a summary of benefits.
When an employer will not answer basic questions about worksite, wage level or filing responsibility, ask whether the relevant public-access-file materials are available through its compliance or human-resources contact. You may not receive every document during recruiting, but the request can reveal whether the company has an organized immigration process.

Verify the exact vacancy before applying
Government records show past activity. The vacancy determines whether sponsorship is available now.
- Read the entire posting. Search for “visa sponsorship,” “immigration sponsorship,” “work authorization,” “H-1B transfer,” “future sponsorship” and “not able to sponsor.” Check both the qualifications section and the legal or location notes.
- Check the employer’s careers site. A recruiting-board summary can omit restrictions that appear in the original posting.
- Ask a written question. Use a direct formulation: “Will the company sponsor an H-1B petition, including a transfer or change of employer if applicable, for this exact role, worksite and expected start date?”
- Record the answer. Save the recruiter’s name, response, date and any conditions. “We sponsor” is incomplete unless it applies to your role and situation.
- Confirm timing. Ask when immigration counsel would review your case, who pays filing costs, and whether the company will proceed before your current work authorization expires.
A historical petition or LCA cannot establish that the current opening is eligible, that the hiring team has budget for sponsorship, or that a petition will be approved. Written confirmation is the final screening step.
What recent LCA data shows about technology hiring
The DOL’s FY2026 first-quarter selected statistics, with data as of December 31, 2025, describe LCA activity across employers and occupations. They are not counts of job openings, visa approvals or guaranteed future sponsorship.
| Measure | Reported figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Applications received | 76,164 | DOL FY2026 Q1 selected statistics; data as of December 31, 2025 |
| Applications processed | 83,116 | DOL FY2026 Q1 selected statistics; processing can include applications received earlier |
| Applications certified | 75,488 | DOL FY2026 Q1 selected statistics |
| Positions certified | 163,306 | DOL FY2026 Q1 selected statistics; positions are not equivalent to job openings |
| Software developer positions | 55,517 (34.0%) | Share of certified positions reported by DOL for the period |
| California | 53,940 (33.0%) | Certified positions by state |
| Texas | 20,628 (12.6%) | Certified positions by state |
| Washington | 12,759 (7.8%) | Certified positions by state |
The same DOL employer table lists these counts by unique federal employer identification number (FEIN):
| Employer | Certified positions | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Qualcomm Technologies | 25,555 | Positions associated with unique FEIN records in the DOL table |
| Amazon.com Services | 10,616 | Positions associated with unique FEIN records in the DOL table |
| 3,812 | Positions associated with unique FEIN records in the DOL table | |
| Amazon Web Services | 2,899 | Positions associated with unique FEIN records in the DOL table |
| Cisco | 2,868 | Positions associated with unique FEIN records in the DOL table |
| NVIDIA | 2,491 | Positions associated with unique FEIN records in the DOL table |
| Infosys | 2,272 | Positions associated with unique FEIN records in the DOL table |
The DOL table warns that calculations use unique FEINs, so the same employer name can appear across multiple FEINs. These figures indicate filing capacity during the measured period, not a probability that any particular applicant will receive sponsorship.

Use a scorecard so that one impressive number does not decide your shortlist. Rate each employer on the following dimensions:
| Factor | Questions to answer | Strong evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Recency | Are filings from recent fiscal years? | Recent activity that matches your hiring cycle |
| Petition type | Are approvals initial, continuing or both? | The category fits your status and need |
| Occupation match | Does the SOC align with your role? | LCAs for the same or closely related occupation |
| Location | Does the listed worksite match the job? | Same city, state and workable remote arrangement |
| Wage alignment | Can the employer meet the required wage? | Compensation that can satisfy the higher-of-actual-or-prevailing rule |
| Vacancy language | Does the posting address sponsorship? | Explicit sponsorship or transfer wording for the role |
| Process | Does recruiting explain next steps? | Named immigration contact, timeline and written answer |
| Long-term support | Does the employer explain transfer, amendment or permanent-residence processes? | A documented policy rather than a general promise |
Employer size and filing volume are useful context, but they should never outweigh a mismatch in occupation, worksite or current job language. A smaller company with one recent, occupation-matched filing and clear recruiter confirmation may be a better target than a large company whose records concern unrelated positions.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mistake: Treating a large approval count as a guarantee
Why it fails: Counts include different occupations, offices, subsidiaries and filing types. They also reflect adjudicated decisions rather than pending cases.
Correction: Separate initial and continuing approvals, then match the record to your occupation, worksite and status.
Recommended Free Tools
Mistake: Assuming an LCA is an approved visa
Why it fails: An LCA is a DOL labor-attestation step. USCIS still reviews the H-1B petition, and the data does not establish that a worker was selected, approved or hired.
Correction: Use the LCA to test occupation, wage and location alignment, then verify the vacancy and petition plan with recruiting.
Mistake: Ignoring mailing-address fields
Why it fails: USCIS says the city and state in the hub are mailing-address fields and may not be the beneficiary’s work location.
Correction: Confirm the actual worksite and remote-work arrangement in the posting and in writing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Why it fails: Immigration review, internal approvals and filing deadlines may not fit your status expiration or start date.
Correction: State your current authorization and timing early enough for recruiting to give a useful answer, while still presenting your qualifications first.

Mistake: Assuming all tech roles qualify equally
Why it fails: Specialty-occupation analysis depends on the actual duties and degree requirements, not merely the word “technology” in a job title.
Correction: Compare the job’s duties and required degree with the occupation shown in the employer’s LCA history and ask counsel to assess unusual roles.
H-1B caps and other specialty-occupation programs
The cited annual H-1B limits are 65,000 regular numbers plus 20,000 exemptions for workers with qualifying U.S. advanced degrees. Selection and eligibility rules can change, so check the current USCIS instructions before relying on a cap figure or filing timeline.
DOL FLAG materials list H-1B, H-1B1 and E-3 specialty-occupation programs. H-1B1 and E-3 eligibility is limited by nationality and other statutory requirements, so an employer that cannot sponsor an H-1B may still have a different route for a qualifying candidate, while an employer’s H-1B history does not establish eligibility for those categories.
A practical application record
Keep a spreadsheet or document for every employer. Include:
- Legal petitioner name and any related names found in government records
- USCIS fiscal years searched and initial versus continuing approval notes
- DOL LCA occupation, worksite, wage information and filing date
- Original job-posting URL and the exact sponsorship language
- Recruiter’s name, contact date and written answer
- Your status, expiration date and required start date
- Whether the employer discusses transfer, amendment or permanent-residence support
- Next action and a date to follow up
Keep several alternatives active. Filing patterns vary by team, role, location and hiring cycle, and a company’s policy can change before an offer is made.
Final decision checklist
- Does the employer appear in USCIS H-1B records for a recent, relevant period?
- Are initial or continuing approvals appropriate for your immigration situation?
- Does DOL evidence match your occupation, worksite and likely wage?
- Does the employer maintain the required LCA public-access materials?
- Does the exact vacancy contain sponsorship or transfer language?
- Has recruiting confirmed sponsorship in writing for this role, location and start date?
- Can the employer’s process meet your status and timing constraints?
- Do you have alternatives if this team declines to sponsor?
If any answer is “no” or “unknown,” keep the employer in an unverified-lead column rather than treating it as a confirmed sponsor.
