There is no single cheapest grocery-delivery service for every household. The lowest-cost choice is the provider that serves your postcode and produces the smallest delivered total for your usual basket after item prices, delivery and service fees, order minimums, tips, taxes, bags or bottle charges, discounts, and any membership cost are included. A service with a free-delivery label can still cost more because its groceries or service fee are higher.
Use one representative basket, price it at each locally available provider, and apply the same delivery window and household assumptions. The method below helps you compare Walmart+, Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market delivery, Instacart storefronts, and local alternatives without mistaking a headline fee for the actual cost of feeding your household.

The cheapest service is the one with the lowest delivered total for your address, basket, order pattern, and preferred delivery speed. Because availability, item prices, promotions, and fees vary by postcode and checkout, a national winner cannot be established from a membership price or delivery fee alone.
Official fee pages illustrate why. One service may waive a delivery charge above a threshold, another may charge a service fee on every order, and a third may have lower item prices but fewer coupons online. The result can change when you order weekly instead of monthly, choose a slower slot, or already have a qualifying membership.

Use a like-for-like comparison
Compare only services that can deliver your planned basket to your address. Match product sizes, brands, quantities, substitutions, and delivery windows as closely as possible. Record the amount shown immediately before payment, not an advertised starting fee.
Why a free-delivery claim is not the answer
Free delivery normally refers to one fee under stated eligibility rules. Service fees, small-order charges, rush premiums, tips, taxes, and higher online item prices can remain. Membership dues also become part of your grocery cost if you would not buy the membership for another reason.
How do I calculate the true cost of a grocery-delivery order?
Start with the complete checkout amount for one normal order, then extend it over the number of orders your household expects to place. A practical annual model is:
annual delivered cost = annual grocery basket cost + annual membership cost + delivery, service and speed fees + tips + other checkout charges − discounts actually available to your household
This is a comparison method, not a published industry statistic. Use the same assumptions for every provider and separate a membership you would buy anyway from one purchased solely for grocery delivery.
Line items to capture
| Cost component | What to record |
|---|---|
| Items | Prices for the same brands, sizes, quantities, and acceptable substitutes. |
| Delivery | The fee for the selected slot, including any express or one-hour premium. |
| Service | Any platform or retailer service fee that remains after a delivery waiver. |
| Order minimums | Minimum basket requirements and below-minimum charges. |
| Tips | The amount you actually plan to leave; keep the assumption consistent. |
| Other checkout charges | Bag fees, bottle deposits, long-distance or priority fees, and taxes where applicable. |
| Discounts | Only coupons, promotions, or credits that your household can actually use through that storefront. |
| Membership allocation | Annual or monthly dues divided across the grocery orders you expect to place. |
Calculate both per-order and annual totals
If a service charges $8 in combined delivery and service fees and you place four orders a month, those fees represent $384 over a year before tips or other charges. A $98 annual membership would add $98 to the household total, or $2.04 per order at 48 orders. The same membership allocated across 12 orders would add $8.17 per order, so order frequency can reverse the ranking.
If a membership is already paid for because you use its non-grocery benefits, show two figures: the household’s total annual cost including the membership, and the incremental grocery cost if the membership would exist anyway. Do not call the incremental figure the service’s full cost; it answers a different decision.

How do I build a basket that makes the comparison fair?
A representative basket is more useful than a deliberately tiny order designed to trigger a fee waiver. Use items your household buys repeatedly, include at least one item from each major category, and keep quantities fixed.
- Write a baseline list. Include the products in a typical week or month, such as milk, eggs, produce, pantry staples, meat or alternatives, and household essentials if you normally buy them together.
- Set exact specifications. Note package size, count, brand preference, dietary requirements, and an acceptable substitute. A 12-ounce package is not a like-for-like match for a 16-ounce package.
- Choose one delivery pattern. Use the same scheduled day and a comparable time window. If a provider has no equivalent slot, record the closest option and explain the difference.
- Enter the same quantities. Do not reduce the basket merely to qualify for a lower threshold. Record whether the cart is above or below each provider’s minimum.
- Apply realistic promotions. Use digital coupons only when you can access them through that provider. Treat uncertain substitutions as a possible cost change rather than assuming the cheapest replacement.
- Save the pre-payment total. Capture item subtotal, every fee, tip, tax, and discount before placing the order. Repeat at another time if prices or slots are unusually promotional.
Account for substitutions and unavailable promotions
A lower displayed item price is not useful if the service routinely substitutes a larger or more expensive package that you would reject. Sprouts explains that some in-store promotions and digital coupons are not available through its Instacart storefront, and that online promotions and service fees have conditions. Read the retailer’s disclosure and compare the discounts visible in the actual cart at Sprouts’ pricing page.
How should I include membership costs?
Allocate a membership to the orders that benefit from it, then test whether the savings exceed the dues. A membership that waives delivery fees may still leave service fees, minimums, or speed charges, so compare the complete checkout total with and without membership where the site allows it.
Membership you are buying only for groceries
Put the full annual or monthly dues into the grocery calculation. Divide that amount by your expected orders, not by an optimistic order count. If you expect 24 orders a year, a $98 annual fee adds $4.08 per order before considering any waived fees.
Membership you already have
Keep the membership in the household budget, but identify its incremental grocery effect separately. If you would retain it for other benefits, the decision to use its grocery delivery is based on checkout savings versus alternatives; if grocery use is the reason you would renew, include the renewal cost in the comparison.
Thresholds and eligibility can limit the value
A waiver may apply only to eligible orders above a minimum, from selected stores, or during selected delivery windows. Check whether your usual basket qualifies every time. One below-minimum order or rush delivery can erase the apparent savings from several waived fees.
What does Walmart+ cost for grocery delivery?
For U.S. shoppers, Walmart lists Walmart+ at $98 per year or $12.95 per month, plus applicable tax, on its membership page. Its delivery information says members do not pay the listed $7.95–$9.95 store-delivery fee when the order and slot qualify, and identifies a $35 minimum for free scheduled delivery. The official benefit details are at Walmart’s delivery-benefits page and Walmart’s membership page.

Walmart fee conditions to test in your cart
- Order minimum: Scheduled free delivery requires at least $35 and a time slot marked with a $0 delivery fee.
- Below minimum: Walmart lists a $6.99 minimum-order fee when the order does not meet the threshold.
- Express: Faster delivery may carry additional charges, even for members.
- Availability: Eligibility depends on your address, the items, inventory, and open time slots.
A $35 basket that fits a $0 scheduled slot can be attractive for a household that orders often enough to use the membership. A smaller basket, an express slot, or an unavailable $0 slot requires a fresh checkout comparison. Membership benefits and fees can change, so verify the terms displayed for your account before renewing.
How do Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods delivery fees work?
Amazon’s official U.S. fee schedule separates Amazon Fresh from Whole Foods Market delivery. For Prime members using Amazon Fresh two-hour delivery, the page lists orders over $100 as free, $50–$100 orders at $6.95, and orders under $50 at $9.95. Non-Prime charges vary with basket size, and rush or one-hour delivery can add fees. The schedule is published at Amazon’s grocery-fee help page.
Amazon Fresh thresholds
Do not assume that a Prime membership makes every Fresh order free. A household whose normal basket is $60 would still face the listed $6.95 two-hour fee under that schedule. If the basket regularly exceeds $100 and the household already uses Prime, the fee structure may compare favorably, but item prices, tips, taxes, and any rush charge still belong in the total.
Whole Foods delivery
The same help page states that every Whole Foods delivery order carries a $9.95 service fee, with possible additional rush fees. This is a service fee, not a guarantee that delivery is the only extra charge. Compare the Whole Foods cart’s item prices and final checkout total with the Fresh cart rather than transferring Fresh’s thresholds to Whole Foods.

Other Amazon grocery options
Amazon also describes same-day grocery delivery and local grocery partners, each with its own thresholds and availability. The overview is at Amazon’s grocery-ordering explainer. Select the option shown for your postcode and use that option’s checkout fees; do not combine one service’s schedule with another service’s basket.
How do Instacart fees and retailer storefronts affect the total?
Instacart says delivery fees vary by retailer, delivery window, and order total. Instacart+ members receive $0 delivery fees on eligible orders of $10 or more per retailer, but variable service fees remain and tips are separate. Long-distance or priority fees may also apply. The platform’s fee guidance is available at Instacart’s fee information page.
Compare the retailer cart, not the membership badge
Open the exact retailer storefront you would use, enter the matched basket, and read every fee at checkout. A $0 delivery line can coexist with a service fee, higher online item prices, or a promotion that is unavailable through the storefront. If you place orders from several retailers in one month, check whether the $10 eligibility test applies separately to each retailer.

When a retailer’s own channel may differ
Retailers can set different online prices, promotions, and service-fee rules for a marketplace storefront. Sprouts’ disclosure specifically warns that some in-store promotions and digital coupons are unavailable on Instacart. Record the promotion actually applied to your cart, not the discount advertised in a weekly circular or in-store signage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich local and timing factors change the result?
Availability is a cost factor. Amazon lists service by eligible postcode, while Walmart says delivery depends on address, items, inventory, and time-slot availability. If a provider cannot deliver your complete basket, its low advertised fee has no value for your household.
Check these before comparing prices
- Enter the complete delivery address or postcode, not only a city name.
- Confirm that the store serves your neighborhood and that your usual items are in stock.
- Look for a scheduled slot with a lower fee before selecting express or priority delivery.
- Check whether a rural, long-distance, apartment, or remote-address surcharge appears.
- Review substitution controls and whether unavailable items are refunded or replaced.
Scheduled versus rapid delivery
A slower scheduled window can reduce or eliminate a speed premium. Compare the same type of window across services, then run a second scenario for the speed your household actually needs. Do not choose a scheduled price that is unusable for your work, childcare, or food-safety requirements just to make one provider look cheaper.
How can I compare providers over a full year?
Turn one basket into a realistic annual scenario. Estimate the number of weekly, biweekly, or monthly orders; multiply the item subtotal and recurring fees; add membership dues once; and subtract only discounts you can repeatedly obtain.
Build three useful scenarios
- Normal shopping: Your usual basket and scheduled delivery window.
- Small top-up: A below-threshold order for urgent items, including any minimum-order fee.
- Speed-required: The rush or one-hour option you would use when a scheduled slot is unavailable.
One service can win the normal scenario while another is cheaper for emergency top-ups. If your household can consolidate two small orders into one qualifying basket without waste, include that behavioral change as a separate scenario rather than quietly changing the baseline.

| Question | Record for every provider |
|---|---|
| Can it deliver here? | Eligible postcode, store, inventory, and available slot. |
| What does the basket cost? | Matched item subtotal after usable promotions. |
| What fees appear? | Delivery, service, minimum-order, rush, priority, bag, bottle, and tax charges. |
| What will I tip? | Your planned tip for the same service level. |
| How often will I order? | Expected orders per month and year. |
| Does membership pay? | Allocated dues versus fees avoided, with existing-membership status noted. |
What hidden charges should I check before placing an order?
Read the final cost screen every time, especially when an order is close to a threshold. Fees can change with basket value, time slot, retailer, distance, and speed.
- Below-minimum fees: A cart just under the required amount may incur a fixed charge; compare adding a needed item with paying the fee, without buying unwanted goods.
- Service fees: A delivery waiver does not necessarily remove the platform or retailer service fee.
- Rush and priority fees: Faster windows can add charges even when standard delivery is covered.
- Tips: Keep tip assumptions consistent and treat them as part of the delivered cost.
- Bags and deposits: Bag fees, bottle deposits, and similar local charges can appear only at checkout.
- Taxes: Include taxes where they are applied to goods or services in your jurisdiction.
- Substitution differences: A replacement can change both quantity and price; set “refund” or approval preferences deliberately.
How often should I recheck the cheapest option?
Recheck when your basket, address, membership, or delivery needs change, and periodically even when nothing obvious changes. Providers alter fees, slot availability, promotions, and inventory. A service that was cheapest during a promotion may not remain cheapest at ordinary prices.

Keep a simple record of the date, basket, slot, item subtotal, fees, tip, and final total. Comparing two or three ordinary orders is more reliable than basing a yearly decision on one unusually discounted checkout. Before renewal, rerun the annual calculation using the membership price currently displayed for your account.
How do I choose when two services are nearly tied?
Use non-price factors only after calculating delivered totals. If the difference is small, choose the service with the more dependable slots, better substitution controls, fewer damaged or missing items, or a basket that requires less time to correct.

- Confirm both totals use the same basket and delivery speed.
- Check whether either total depends on a promotion that may expire.
- Estimate the cost of one likely small or rush order.
- Prefer the option whose normal price remains acceptable when a coupon, slot, or item disappears.
This approach avoids chasing a nominally cheaper service that creates waste, extra trips, or frequent replacement orders. The best household choice is the lowest dependable annual cost for the way you actually shop.
What is the final checklist before I decide?
Run this checklist at the payment screen and again when a membership renews:
- The provider serves my exact postcode and can supply my normal basket.
- Product sizes, brands, quantities, and substitutions are matched.
- I selected comparable scheduled or rapid delivery windows.
- Delivery, service, minimum-order, rush, priority, bag, deposit, and tax charges are included.
- The tip is included and uses the same assumption across providers.
- Only promotions available in this online cart are counted.
- Membership dues are allocated across realistic orders and labeled as existing or new.
- I tested a small top-up and a speed-required order if either is common for my household.
- I saved the final delivered total and the date so I can spot changes later.
After those checks, select the service with the lowest realistic total, not the lowest headline fee. For U.S. shoppers, the official Walmart, Amazon, Instacart, and retailer pages linked above provide the current rules to verify at checkout; shoppers elsewhere should confirm the equivalent local providers, taxes, and consumer rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can grocery pickup be cheaper than delivery for the same store?
Often it can be, because pickup may avoid delivery and some service fees, but the store can apply different minimums or prices. Price the same basket in pickup and delivery carts and include your travel cost, time, and any parking or transit expense before deciding.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I place one large grocery order instead of several small orders?
Consolidating orders can help you meet a free-delivery threshold and reduce repeated service fees. It is worthwhile only if the larger basket will be used before food spoils and does not force purchases you would otherwise skip.
How should roommates split a grocery-delivery membership?
Agree on an allocation method before ordering, such as dividing dues by the number of participating orders or by each person’s share of eligible baskets. Keep shared tips, fees, refunds, and substitutions visible so a membership does not appear cheaper simply because one roommate absorbs the charges.
What if the cheapest cart keeps substituting items I do not want?
Set item-level substitution preferences, choose refunds for sensitive products, and price the basket using acceptable replacements. If repeated substitutions cause extra trips or waste, compare the dependable cost of another provider rather than the original low subtotal.
