How to Find the Cheapest Time to Book Festive-Season Flights in 2026

For U.S. Thanksgiving travel in 2026, the lowest average airfare in Google’s historical analysis appeared about 34 days before departure, while Christmas travel reached its average low about 56 days before departure. Those are monitoring targets, not guaranteed deadlines. The broad low-price ranges were 21–57 days before Thanksgiving departures and 33–67 days before Christmas departures. If your dates, airport, or preferred flight are fixed, booking earlier is safer than waiting for a statistical trough.

The most reliable way to save is to search your exact route, scan nearby travel dates, track the fare, and compare the value of a cheaper connection with the time and inconvenience it adds. The weekday on which you purchase matters far less than the days on which you fly.

The 2026 booking windows at a glance

Google’s October 2026 holiday analysis used five years of aggregated Google Flights data for departures from the United States. It estimates when average fares were lowest, but it does not predict the price of any particular flight. Count the days backward from your actual outbound departure date, not automatically from Thanksgiving or Christmas Day.

Trip type Average low point Broader low-price range Practical interpretation
Thanksgiving 2026 34 days before departure 21–57 days before departure Begin watching well before the window; fares in much of this range were historically competitive.
Christmas 2026 56 days before departure 33–67 days before departure Start comparing by roughly two months out, while protecting fixed itineraries earlier.
Domestic flights overall 39 days before departure 22–57 days before departure A general domestic benchmark, not a holiday-specific rule.
International flights overall 89 days before departure 50–133 days before departure Google found the average change across this wider range insignificant and recommends booking as soon as possible when plans are set.

For example, if your Thanksgiving outbound flight leaves on November 22, 2026, 34 days earlier is October 19. The 21–57-day range would run approximately from November 1 back to September 26. If your Christmas outbound leaves December 20, the 56-day point is October 25, and the 33–67-day range is approximately October 14 through November 17. These calendar examples illustrate the counting method; your route may follow a different price pattern.

What the numbers do—and do not—tell you

They are averages across many U.S. markets

The Thanksgiving and Christmas figures are historical averages, not promises that every route will be cheapest on day 34 or day 56. The analysis covers U.S. departures and aggregates many origin-and-destination markets. A flight from a small regional airport, a popular nonstop between major cities, and an international itinerary can behave differently even when they leave on the same date.

The underlying methodology has a defined scope

Google’s detailed 2025 methodology examined average round-trip fares observed from January 1, 2021, through August 1, 2025, for trips lasting four to 16 days and departing from the 4,000 largest U.S. markets. Holiday trips departed before the holiday and returned afterward. The 2026 article describes five years of aggregated Google Flights data but does not turn that historical sample into a route-specific forecast.

The annual trough moves

In Google’s 2025 analysis, the lowest average Thanksgiving fare appeared 35 days before departure, with a 24–59-day low-price range. Christmas reached its average low 51 days out, with a 32–73-day range. The 2026 estimates moved to 34 and 56 days, respectively. That year-to-year movement is why a range is more useful than a single “perfect” booking day.

A step-by-step method for finding a reasonable fare

1. Define the trip you actually need

Write down the departure airport, destination airport, outbound date, return date, number of travelers, and whether a connection is acceptable. Include nearby airports only if you can realistically reach them. A low headline fare is not a saving if ground transportation, parking, an extra hotel night, or an impractical arrival time erases the difference.

Decide how much schedule flexibility you have. A traveler who can leave one day earlier and return one day later has more ways to reduce the fare than someone who must attend an event at a precise time. Mark any non-negotiables—such as a nonstop flight, an arrival before a family gathering, or no overnight connection—before looking at prices so a tempting but unusable itinerary does not become your benchmark.

2. Search the exact dates first

Run the search for the itinerary you would buy today. This gives you a real price and a schedule baseline. Google’s “cheapest time to book” insight compares current prices with prior years and may indicate whether fares are more likely to rise or fall before departure, but it is an aid to judgment rather than a fare guarantee.

Record the total displayed price, departure and arrival times, number of stops, connection airports, and any conditions that affect value. Take a screenshot or note the date of the search; holiday fares can change quickly, and remembering only a rounded number makes later comparisons unreliable.

3. Scan nearby travel dates

Use the date grid, calendar, or price graph in Google Flights to compare adjacent departure and return dates. Check at least one or two days on either side when your plans permit. Google’s 2026 analysis found that departing Monday and returning Tuesday or Wednesday was associated with about 14% savings compared with weekend travel. That is a broad pattern from its data, not a guaranteed discount on your route.

Compare complete itineraries rather than looking only at the outbound leg. A cheaper outbound paired with an expensive return may cost more overall. Also check whether shifting the return changes the number of vacation days, lodging costs, or time away from work; the cheapest air ticket is not necessarily the cheapest trip.

4. Turn on price tracking

When you can wait, activate fare tracking for the exact dates and route. Google Flights can notify you about substantial price changes. Track a second version with flexible dates if your schedule allows it, but keep the fixed-date alert active so a good itinerary is not missed while you experiment.

Price tracking works best when you set a personal decision rule in advance. For example, you might buy when the fare falls within your planned budget and the schedule meets your requirements, rather than waiting indefinitely for an unachievable historical low. Alerts are signals to review the itinerary; they are not an instruction to purchase every time a fare moves.

5. Compare the historical window with your real deadline

Place your departure date on a calendar and mark the relevant range. For a U.S. domestic Thanksgiving trip, begin active monitoring before the 21–57-day range and pay particular attention around 34 days out. For Christmas, watch the 33–67-day range and the 56-day average low point. Starting early gives you time to learn the route’s normal prices without forcing a last-minute decision.

If you are already inside the range and see an acceptable fare, there is no benefit in waiting merely to reach the exact average day. The historical low is calculated across many observations; it is not a countdown clock for your booking.

6. Compare the itinerary’s total value

Google found that nonstop tickets cost 20% more on average than connecting tickets in its 2026 analysis. A connection can therefore reduce the fare, but the percentage is an average and the trade-off depends on the route. Compare the saving with extra travel time, airport transfers, risk of a missed connection, and the practical cost of arriving later.

Use a simple calculation: start with the displayed fare, add unavoidable seat, baggage, ground-transportation, or overnight costs shown during booking, and then assign a value to the additional hours if a connection is required. You do not need a precise dollar value for your time; you do need to recognize when a small fare reduction buys a substantially worse journey.

7. Recheck before committing

Before payment, verify the dates, airports, passenger names, connection duration, baggage rules, and change or cancellation conditions. Holiday schedules can be crowded, so a low fare on a flight with an extremely short connection may not be worth the apparent saving. Confirm that every traveler can meet the departure time and that the arrival still works with lodging and ground transportation.

Should you book now or keep watching?

Your situation Better default Reason
Dates are fixed and a specific flight time matters Book when the fare is acceptable Waiting for the statistical low can cost the schedule or seats you need.
You can move travel by one or more days Monitor while scanning nearby dates Date flexibility can produce more savings than choosing a particular purchase weekday.
Domestic Thanksgiving trip Watch before and through 21–57 days out; use 34 days as a reference The range captures more historical low fares than a single date.
Domestic Christmas trip Watch before and through 33–67 days out; use 56 days as a reference Christmas’s estimated average low occurred later than Thanksgiving’s.
International trip Book as soon as the itinerary and fare fit your plan Google’s 89-day average low is less actionable because price differences across 50–133 days were insignificant.
A nonstop is essential Set a higher acceptable-fare ceiling and book earlier if needed Nonstops averaged 20% more than connections, and the cheapest connecting option may not meet your requirement.

Google Group Product Manager James Byers summarized the fixed-date decision this way: “When your dates are already set, booking early is the safest bet to protect your itinerary.” That advice addresses the risk the averages cannot measure: losing the flight time, airport, or nonstop service you actually need.

Why the weekday you buy is a weak lever

Travelers often wait for a particular purchase day, especially Tuesday or Wednesday. Google’s 2026 analysis found the difference was negligible: Wednesday purchases were about 1.4% cheaper than Sunday purchases on average. A small historical difference can disappear through normal fare movement, a changed inventory level, or a different route mix.

Use the day-of-travel findings instead. The analysis associated Monday departures paired with Tuesday or Wednesday returns with about 14% savings over weekend flights. Changing when you fly can matter more than delaying the purchase until a favored weekday. However, those figures describe broad averages; a school calendar, a major event, or limited service can override the pattern on your itinerary.

Domestic and international trips require different caution

Domestic holiday flights

The domestic benchmark of 39 days before departure, with a 22–57-day low range, provides context for Thanksgiving and Christmas shopping. Holiday-specific estimates are more relevant when your trip matches the holiday sample, but neither benchmark should replace the live fare for your route. Start monitoring early, examine flexible dates, and buy once the price and schedule meet your requirements.

International holiday flights

Google’s overall international estimate places the average low 89 days before departure. It also reports that the average price change through the broader 50–133-day low range was insignificant and recommends booking as soon as possible. International itineraries often involve fewer suitable flight combinations, so protecting a workable schedule can be more valuable than chasing a theoretical trough.

Do not apply the Thanksgiving or Christmas domestic windows mechanically to an international itinerary. Use them only as a reminder to monitor early, then let the exact origin, destination, airlines, connection points, and travel dates determine your decision.

Common mistakes and how to recover

Mistake: treating day 34 or day 56 as a deadline

Recovery: Convert the point estimate into a range and compare the current fare with your budget and schedule. If the fare is acceptable before the average low, booking can be rational. If it is high inside the range, continue tracking only if you can tolerate losing the itinerary.

Mistake: counting from the holiday instead of the flight

Recovery: Count backward from the outbound departure date. Holiday samples generally departed before Thanksgiving or Christmas and returned afterward, so the relevant date is the flight date, not the holiday on the calendar.

Mistake: focusing on the purchase weekday

Recovery: Compare nearby travel dates and complete round trips. The observed 1.4% Wednesday-versus-Sunday difference is too small to justify postponing a suitable fare solely for a preferred buying day.

Mistake: comparing fare only

Recovery: Put nonstop and connecting options side by side, including travel time and any unavoidable extra costs. The average 20% nonstop premium may be worthwhile when a connection creates a long layover or an inconvenient arrival.

Mistake: waiting after your flexibility disappears

Recovery: Reassess your risk. If work, lodging, or family commitments make the dates fixed, stop optimizing for an average and protect the itinerary at a price you can afford. Monitoring is useful only while you can genuinely accept alternatives.

Mistake: trusting one search result

Recovery: Recheck the same route with the calendar and date grid, then set an alert. A single fare is a snapshot; a short record of prices across dates shows whether the apparent bargain is real for your plans.

A practical decision checklist

  • Have you searched the exact origin, destination, outbound date, and return date?
  • Have you checked nearby dates and realistic alternate airports?
  • Have you marked the 21–57-day Thanksgiving range or 33–67-day Christmas range when applicable?
  • Have you counted backward from the actual departure date?
  • Have you enabled a fare alert if you can wait?
  • Have you compared the full round-trip price, not just one leg?
  • Have you priced the time and inconvenience of a connection against the average 20% nonstop premium?
  • Are your dates fixed enough that waiting could cost the schedule you need?
  • Have you checked connection duration, airports, baggage, change rules, and arrival logistics before paying?

The best booking moment is therefore a decision window, not a magic date. Use the 2026 averages to know when to watch closely, use flexible-date tools to expose cheaper combinations, and book when the fare provides acceptable value without putting an essential itinerary at risk.
