The most reliable way to find funding for a Latino-owned business is to separate three searches: grants that your business can legally receive, loans sized for your cash need, and organizations that provide capital-readiness help. Start with your state and city economic-development offices, SBA resource partners, MBDA Business Centers, CDFI lenders and SBA-approved intermediaries. Then compare written loan offers by total cost and repayment risk.
Do not assume that a federal “small-business grant” is startup money. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) says its grants are limited to scientific research, community promotion of entrepreneurship and exporting, and its minority-business guidance says the federal government does not provide grants to start a business. Most Latino entrepreneurs will find usable capital through loans, local programs or technical-assistance organizations rather than a general federal grant.

What funding is actually available to a Latino-owned business?
“Latino-specific funding” can mean a program reserved for Latino applicants, a program serving minority business enterprises, or a mainstream loan found through an organization that understands the community. Those are different things. SBA and MBDA guidance do not identify a generally available grant that an owner can claim simply because the owner is Latino. Eligibility usually depends on the program’s purpose, geography, industry, business size, credit profile and use of funds.
That does not make identity irrelevant. Minority-business support organizations can help with counseling, lender introductions, procurement and financial preparation. A lender or grantmaker, however, still applies its own rules. Treat a Latino-focused announcement as a lead to verify, not as proof that you qualify or that money is currently available.

Grants, loans and support organizations serve different purposes
| Route | What it can provide | Who makes the decision | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grant | Funds that generally do not require repayment when program conditions are met | The grantmaking agency or organization | Many listings fund research, exporters, nonprofits or organizations serving businesses rather than an individual startup |
| SBA microloan | Up to $50,000 for smaller business needs | An SBA-approved nonprofit, community-based intermediary | Intermediaries set credit standards, rates, fees and collateral requirements |
| SBA 7(a) loan | Up to $5 million for broad business purposes | A participating commercial lender | SBA guarantees a portion of the lender’s loan; you apply to and repay the lender |
| CDFI or state program | Loans, investments, guarantees or technical assistance that vary by provider | The CDFI, state, territory or Tribal-government program administrator | Rules, products and availability depend on the local program |
| Business-support organization | Counseling, capital-readiness training, referrals and market help | The organization’s program staff | Support is not the same as a grant or a loan approval |
Start with the size and use of your funding need
Write down four facts before searching: the amount, the exact use, when you need it and what business result it should produce. A request for inventory is evaluated differently from a request to buy a building or refinance debt. Matching the use first prevents you from applying for a program that cannot legally fund the purchase.
Needs below $50,000: investigate SBA microloans
SBA microloans are made by nonprofit, community-based intermediaries, not directly by SBA. They can support working capital, inventory, supplies, furniture, fixtures, machinery and equipment. They cannot pay existing debts or buy real estate.
SBA’s program page, accessed October 13, 2026, lists a maximum of $50,000 and an average loan of approximately $13,000. The maximum repayment term is seven years, and SBA describes interest rates generally in the 8%–13% range. Those figures describe the program, not a guaranteed quote: the intermediary decides whether to lend and sets the applicant’s actual rate, fees, term, collateral and other conditions.

SBA 7(a) is the agency’s primary business-loan program, with a maximum loan amount of $5 million. Depending on the lender and the transaction, proceeds may cover working capital, equipment, supplies, eligible refinancing of business debt, real estate and ownership changes.
You apply to a participating lender, not to SBA. SBA states that borrowers “will always work directly with your lender and not with SBA.” The business generally must be a U.S.-based operating for-profit small business, meet SBA size standards, demonstrate creditworthiness and repayment ability, and satisfy the credit-available-elsewhere condition. Latino identity does not replace those requirements.
Fixed assets and community-based financing
SBA’s broader menu includes 504 loans for long-term, fixed-rate financing through Certified Development Companies. The suitable product depends on the asset, project structure and lender requirements.

Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) offer different small-business loan and investment products. Use the U.S. Treasury’s CDFI database or a CDFI locator to identify providers near your business, then confirm that the provider lends to businesses, serves your geography and accepts your intended use of funds.
The State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI) sends federal funding to states, territories and Tribal governments. Those governments may create loan-participation, guarantee or investment programs. Application rules and open dates are jurisdiction-specific, so the relevant state or local administrator is the authority for current details.
Where to look for grants and local programs
Federal grant searches: read the recipient definition first
SBA says it offers limited small-business grants for scientific research, community promotion of entrepreneurship and exporting. Its minority-owned-business guidance says the federal government does not provide grants to start a business. A listing on a government grants site may therefore be aimed at a university, nonprofit, public agency or business-support organization rather than an individual owner.
Before spending time on an application, identify the legal recipient. Check whether the notice names individual businesses, nonprofit organizations, higher-education institutions, consortia or government entities. Also check whether the money pays for a defined project, requires matching funds or is awarded to an organization that then provides services to businesses.
State, city and county economic-development offices
Search the economic-development agency in your state and the small-business office in your city or county. Local programs may offer grants, loan guarantees, revolving loans, fee support or technical assistance tied to a location, industry or job-creation goal. SBA’s resource hub notes that states may offer grants or loans for childcare businesses; that is an industry-specific example, not a general grant for Latino entrepreneurs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConfirm the administering organization’s current application dates, eligible geography, business-size definition, permitted expenses, matching requirement and reporting obligations. A chamber or community organization may help you find a program, but the agency running the program controls eligibility.

MBDA Business Centers and other resource partners
The Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) presents its Business Centers as “one-stop-shops for MBE success.” Centers can help minority business enterprises explore capital, markets and loan strategies. Services and locations change, so verify the nearest center and its current service list.
SBA resource partners and local business-support organizations can help with business plans, financial projections, lender preparation and referrals. Their assistance can improve an application without guaranteeing a grant or loan.
Latino-focused announcements require a date check
On August 4, 2023, the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) announced a four-year, $3 million MBDA-funded Avanzar accelerator providing capital-readiness support for Hispanic and Latino businesses. That announcement establishes a historical program, not an open application in 2026. Confirm directly with USHCC or its Educational Fund before describing enrollment as available, and ask whether the current offering has a fee, a geographic limit or a different eligibility rule.
A separate 2026 MBDA Rural Business Center opportunity illustrates the same issue. It supported organizations that provide technical assistance; applications were limited to eligible higher-education institutions or consortia, individual applications were excluded, and the listing was archived July 29, 2026. It was not direct cash for an individual Latino-owned business and should not be treated as an open opportunity.
How to use SBA Lender Match without confusing it with an application
SBA describes Lender Match as “a tool to help businesses find lenders in their communities,” not a loan application. SBA says interested lenders are returned after two business days, but a match does not guarantee contact, approval or funding.
- Define the request. Record the dollar amount, exact uses, timing and expected business benefit. Separate working capital, equipment, real estate, ownership changes and debt refinancing.
- Prepare a concise business profile. Include the business structure, ownership, location, industry, years in operation and number of employees. For a startup request, prepare a detailed business plan.
- Assemble financial evidence. Gather financial statements, tax returns, cash-flow projections, accounts-receivable and accounts-payable reports when relevant, and information about collateral. SBA notes that required documents vary by loan size and processing method, so ask each lender for its exact checklist.
- Submit the Lender Match information. Treat the returned names as prospective lenders. You still need to contact them, provide documents and complete their underwriting process.
- Ask every lender the same questions. Request the interest-rate type, all fees, repayment schedule, minimum credit score, cash-flow threshold, time-in-business requirement, collateral rules, prepayment penalty, grace period and any demand or balloon provision.
- Compare written offers. Calculate total dollars repaid over the full term, not just the advertised rate. Check whether a variable rate could raise payments and whether the proposed use is fully eligible.
How to compare a microloan, 7(a) loan or local offer
The word “SBA” does not make two offers equivalent. A microloan intermediary and a 7(a) lender can have different underwriting standards, fees and repayment structures. A CDFI or state program may be more flexible in one area and more restrictive in another.

| Comparison question | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|
| What is the total cost? | Interest plus origination, packaging, servicing, guarantee, closing and other fees determines the dollars your business actually pays. |
| Is the rate fixed or variable? | A variable rate can change the payment and cash-flow requirement during the term. |
| What uses and amount are allowed? | A program that cannot fund real estate, existing debt or your specific equipment will not solve the need. |
| What are the credit, cash-flow and time-in-business tests? | These determine whether the application can reach underwriting and what documentation is needed. |
| What collateral or owner contribution is required? | Collateral affects risk to your assets; an owner contribution affects how much cash you must put into the project. |
| How long is the decision process? | Timing matters when inventory, payroll or a purchase contract has a fixed deadline. |
| Who is the provider? | A lender makes a credit decision; a grantmaker awards project funds; an intermediary or support center may provide coaching rather than capital. |
| Is the opportunity open and direct? | Check the current deadline and whether individual businesses, rather than institutions serving businesses, may apply. |
Documents and preparation that make applications stronger
- Funding brief: amount requested, exact use, timing, and measurable business benefit.
- Business plan: especially important for startup funding; explain customers, pricing, competition, operations and how the financing will be repaid.
- Financial statements and tax returns: provide the period requested by the lender and reconcile figures across documents.
- Cash-flow forecast: show monthly inflows, outflows, debt payments and the assumptions behind sales growth.
- Ownership information: list owners, percentages, legal structure and authorization to borrow.
- Accounts-receivable and accounts-payable reports: include them when the lender requests working-capital detail.
- Collateral and contribution details: identify available assets and the cash you will invest, without assuming the lender will accept a particular asset.
Ask each provider for its current package rather than relying on a generic checklist. SBA says documentation varies by loan size and processing method.

- Identify the recipient. Is the applicant an individual business, a nonprofit, a college, a consortium or a government entity?
- Read the purpose clause. Confirm that ordinary startup costs, inventory, equipment or payroll are allowed if those are your needs.
- Confirm geography and industry. Many local awards require a particular state, county, neighborhood or industry.
- Check dates and status. An archived notice or a 2023 announcement is not evidence of an open 2026 application.
- Look for match and reporting rules. A grant may require your own funds, invoices, job reports or periodic performance reports.
- Verify the administrator and cost. Confirm the official organization, current contact details and whether any application or training fee is legitimate.
Be cautious of a third party promising a guaranteed award or asking for payment before identifying a real, open program. No legitimate intermediary can guarantee that a lender will approve your application.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming Latino status creates automatic eligibility
Correct the assumption by checking the program’s actual criteria. Minority-business support may improve access to counseling or referrals, while a loan still requires creditworthiness, repayment ability and eligible use of proceeds.
Applying for a grant that funds organizations, not businesses
Read the recipient section before drafting a proposal. The archived MBDA Rural Business Center listing shows why: it excluded individual applicants even though the resulting services could benefit businesses.
Choosing a lender by rate alone
Ask for a written estimate of every fee, the payment schedule, total repayment, prepayment terms and rate-adjustment rules. A lower starting rate can cost more if fees or future adjustments are higher.
Using a microloan for an ineligible purpose
Microloans cannot pay existing debts or buy real estate. If those are your needs, ask a 7(a) lender, a 504 provider or a local program whether another structure fits.

Treating a referral as an approval
Lender Match, an MBDA center or a chamber can open a conversation. Only the lender or grantmaking agency can decide the application.
A practical search plan for the next 30 days
- Days 1–3: Write the amount, use, timing and desired business result. Pull recent financial statements and tax returns.
- Days 4–7: Check your state and city economic-development offices, the nearest MBDA Business Center, SBA resource partners and CDFI directories.
- Week 2: Contact local SBA microloan intermediaries if the need is under $50,000. Ask about owner contribution, fees, collateral, training and documents.
- Week 2: Submit an SBA Lender Match profile or contact several participating 7(a) lenders if the need is larger or has multiple eligible uses.
- Week 3: Review grant listings for recipient type, purpose, geography, deadline, match and direct-business eligibility. Remove listings that fail any check.
- Week 4: Compare written financing proposals by total cost, payment risk, eligible uses, collateral and timing. Choose only after confirming that the funds solve the original need without creating an unmanageable payment.
What the available figures do—and do not—prove
SBA reports a microloan maximum of $50,000 and an average of approximately $13,000. Its program description gives a maximum term of seven years and generally stated rates of 8%–13%. These are program-level figures, not a promise for any owner.
SBA reports a 7(a) maximum of $5 million. The amount a lender approves depends on eligibility, repayment capacity, credit analysis, collateral and the transaction’s eligible use.
Recommended Free Tools
MBDA’s homepage reports $1.5 billion in capital facilitated in fiscal year 2023. That is an agency-reported performance metric, not a grant pool available to individual business owners.
The USHCC Avanzar announcement described $3 million over four years for an accelerator and capital-readiness support. It is a 2023 historical announcement; current enrollment and participant funding must be confirmed with USHCC or its Educational Fund.
Bottom line for Latino entrepreneurs seeking capital
Begin with the business need, not the label on a funding advertisement. For less than $50,000, compare local SBA microloan intermediaries; for larger or multi-purpose needs, speak with several 7(a) lenders; for fixed assets or community-based options, investigate 504 providers, CDFIs and state programs. Use MBDA Business Centers, SBA resource partners and local economic-development offices for navigation and preparation. Treat every grant or Latino-focused announcement as date-sensitive, verify who may apply, and compare complete written offers before borrowing.
