Set your non-negotiables first, use occupation-level telework data, broaden location filters where practical, and compare every offer’s pay, duration, schedule, location rules, benefits and protections before accepting. The available evidence is U.S.-focused, and conditions vary by occupation and country.
What a slower full-time market actually means
A slower market is not the same as a hiring freeze. The Federal Reserve’s May 2026 household well-being report said labor-market indicators remained solid overall, although some workers and job seekers faced additional challenges during 2025. Its July 2026 Monetary Policy Report described growth in labor supply and demand as subdued, with key indicators broadly stable. Those findings support a selective, measured search rather than assuming that every employer has stopped hiring.

Your experience can still be much harder than the national picture. Hiring varies by occupation, industry, seniority, geography and work arrangement. A field with stable aggregate employment can have fewer openings in your city, fewer remote vacancies, or longer interview cycles for your level.
Why remote-only searches can feel especially competitive
LinkedIn Economic Graph’s March 2025 analysis found that remote-job availability declined faster than job-seeker demand in its dataset. More than one in five U.S. job seekers in that analysis applied exclusively to remote jobs. That is a platform-specific finding, not a census of all applicants or vacancies, but it explains why a remote listing can attract a large qualified pool even when the employer has only recently posted it.

Do not interpret the finding as a reason to abandon remote work automatically. Instead, treat “remote” as one filter in a broader decision system. If you can work hybrid, locally based or within a wider time-zone range, test those options alongside remote-only applications and compare the response rates.
Why contracts belong in the same search plan
A January 2026 report from LinkedIn Economic Graph and the American Staffing Association said contract postings relatively outperformed full-time and part-time postings during an overall decline in postings. “Relatively outperformed” does not mean contract work is expanding in every occupation, nor does it mean a contract is more secure. It is a reason to run a parallel pipeline, not a promise of availability.
Remote and contract describe different things
Remote describes where work is performed. Contract describes the employment arrangement. A role can therefore be remote and contract at the same time, or remote and employee-based, or on-site and contract-based.

| Question | Remote employee role | Contract assignment |
|---|---|---|
| What does the label primarily describe? | Work location and rules for working away from an office | The legal or commercial arrangement for providing work |
| Can the two labels overlap? | Yes; an employee may work remotely | Yes; a contractor may perform the assignment remotely |
| What must you verify? | Permitted country or state, time-zone coverage, office visits and equipment rules | Counterparty, classification, scope, payment terms, duration, renewal and termination provisions |
Read the actual listing and written offer rather than relying on a headline. “Remote” may mean work from one approved country, work from specified states, or occasional travel to an office. “Contract” may mean a temporary employee supplied through a staffing firm, a fixed-term employee, or an independent business-to-business engagement. Those arrangements can carry different tax, benefit and protection consequences under local law.
Set your constraints before searching
Write a one-page search brief before opening job boards. It prevents a slow market from pushing you into opportunities that cannot meet basic needs.

- Pay floor: Define the minimum salary, hourly rate or project fee you can accept after considering unpaid administrative time, taxes, expenses and payment delays.
- Location: List the countries, states or provinces where you may legally work, plus acceptable time zones and any travel limit.
- Schedule: State your available hours, required response windows and whether you can attend recurring meetings outside your normal time.
- Duration: Set a minimum contract length and decide whether a short assignment is useful for income, portfolio evidence or a bridge to another role.
- Employment status: Decide whether employee status, paid leave, insurance, retirement benefits or other protections are essential rather than merely preferred.
- Work type: Identify the deliverables, tools, customer groups and level of responsibility you can credibly demonstrate.
Separate “must have” conditions from “would like” conditions. For example, a specific time zone may be non-negotiable, while a preferred industry may be flexible. This distinction lets you broaden the search without accepting an arrangement that creates an unmanageable financial or legal risk.
Use occupation-specific evidence instead of broad remote-work claims
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics maintains telework tables by occupation, industry and class of worker, including 2025 annual averages. Use those tables to investigate your particular occupation and industry. Telework prevalence differs substantially across fields, so an economy-wide remote-work impression cannot tell you how many realistic openings exist for your skills.

How to use the tables
- Choose the occupation that most closely matches the work you actually perform, not only your preferred job title.
- Check the industry breakdown if your target sector is known; the same occupation can have different telework patterns across industries.
- Compare the class-of-worker information with the arrangement you want, such as employee work versus independent contracting.
- Use the result to adjust your search mix. A low telework share may justify more local or hybrid applications, while a higher share may support a larger remote pipeline without proving that any particular employer is hiring.
The BLS figures are U.S. data and historical annual averages. They are context for choosing search channels, not a forecast of your interview probability.
Build two search pipelines, not one oversized query
Pipeline A: remote employee roles
Search for the responsibilities and outcomes you can deliver, then apply the remote and geography filters that match your constraints. Review employer career pages, reputable job boards and professional networks. Confirm that the posting is current, identifies the employer, states the permitted worker location and explains whether travel or office attendance is required.
Tailor your resume to the exact responsibilities in each posting. Put remote-relevant evidence in ordinary business terms: the process you owned, the customers or stakeholders served, the tools used, the volume or complexity handled and the result. If the listing asks for a portfolio, provide the work sample that most closely resembles the stated deliverable rather than a general collection.

Pipeline B: contract assignments
Search staffing firms, contract marketplaces, professional networks and employer pages separately from permanent roles. Search by deliverable and duration as well as title: implementation, migration, audit, content production, project support, customer operations or other concrete work can reveal assignments that a broad “contractor” search misses.

The legal counterparty may be the end client, a staffing firm or another intermediary. Ask which entity signs the agreement, pays invoices or wages, handles equipment and approves timesheets. A recognizable end-client name does not by itself establish who employs or pays you.
Broaden location filters deliberately
If your circumstances allow it, run a third test alongside remote-only searches: hybrid roles and jobs based in your local labor market. Do not silently accept a different arrangement; label each pipeline so you can compare response rates. The LinkedIn analysis indicates that remote-only competition is substantial in its U.S. sample, but it does not imply that every reader should give up remote work.
Use multiple sourcing routes and verify each listing
No single site captures every contract or remote opening. Combine:
- Employer career pages, where the hiring entity and official application process are easiest to verify.
- Reputable job boards, while checking the posting date, location rules and application destination.
- Professional networks, where referrals can clarify the team, manager and work arrangement.
- Staffing firms, after confirming the firm’s identity, fee practices and employment model.
- Contract marketplaces, after reading payment timing, dispute rules, service fees and intellectual-property provisions.
Drop a listing from your active funnel when the employer is not identifiable, the location is contradictory, the duties are vague, or the payment arrangement is missing. A high number of low-quality applications is not progress if the openings cannot be verified.

Make your proof match the opening
Every application should answer the employer’s immediate question: can this person deliver the work described? Build a small evidence set for each target role.
- Resume: Lead with the skills and outcomes named in the posting, using the employer’s terminology where it accurately describes your experience.
- Portfolio: Select examples that resemble the requested deliverable, audience, constraints or tools.
- Work sample: If a sample is requested, follow the brief exactly and state assumptions, time spent and what you would do next.
- Interview stories: Prepare examples showing independent planning, communication across distance, handling ambiguity and meeting a deadline.
- Contract evidence: Be ready to describe scope, milestones, handoffs, revision limits and how you report progress.
Do not claim results you cannot substantiate. A concise explanation of your exact contribution is more useful than a vague list of tools or inflated metrics.
Track the funnel and adjust after a meaningful batch
Use a spreadsheet or notes system with one row per opportunity. Record:
- Role title and arrangement: remote employee, hybrid employee, temporary employee, independent contractor or fixed-term contract.
- Source and employer or intermediary.
- Date found and date applied.
- Required location, time zone, schedule and travel.
- Pay structure, stated range and any payment timing.
- Key requirements and the evidence you submitted.
- Status, follow-up date and response.
After a meaningful batch, look for the point at which qualified conversations stop. If applications are viewed but not answered, change the evidence or targeting. If you receive conversations but fail at location or schedule checks, tighten the filters. If contract leads are plentiful but terms are unclear, improve your verification questions rather than accepting more low-quality leads.
Compare an opportunity before you accept it
Use the same questions for employee and contract roles. A higher headline rate may not be better once unpaid time, expenses, gaps between assignments and missing benefits are included.

| Axis | Questions to answer in writing |
|---|---|
| Work arrangement | Is it an employee role, temporary employment, independent contracting or a fixed-term contract? Who is the legal counterparty? |
| Location | Which countries, states or time zones may you work from? Is travel or occasional office attendance required? |
| Compensation | Is payment salary, hourly rate, project fee or commission? How much unpaid time, expense or payment delay is involved? |
| Duration and stability | Is the term fixed? What are the renewal, cancellation and notice terms? |
| Benefits and protections | What benefits, leave, insurance, equipment or worker protections apply under the written offer and local rules? |
| Work conditions | What hours, response windows, supervision, deliverables and workload are expected? |
| Search-channel quality | Is the listing current, attributable to a real employer and specific about duties and terms? |
Clarify contract terms before doing work
Ask for a written agreement that identifies the scope and deliverables, payment amount and timing, start and end dates, renewal process, termination rights, expense rules, ownership of work product, confidentiality obligations, classification and tax handling. Also confirm who supplies equipment, who can change the scope and how additional work is approved.
Do not assume that a label determines your legal rights. Classification, tax treatment, leave, insurance and other protections depend on the jurisdiction and the facts of the relationship. If the arrangement is important to your finances, obtain advice appropriate to your location before signing.
Should you take a contract while continuing to seek full-time work?
A contract can be a sensible bridge when its terms fit your constraints and it does not prevent a sustainable search. Decide by testing the assignment against four questions:
- Can you meet the obligations? Check hours, response windows, exclusivity, conflicts of interest and any restrictions on outside work.
- Does the net value work? Compare the actual payment schedule with unpaid administration, equipment, expenses, taxes and gaps between assignments.
- Does the timing support your plan? A fixed end date, clear notice terms and realistic workload make it easier to continue interviewing than an open-ended assignment with unpredictable demands.
- Is the counterparty credible? Verify the payer, written agreement, contact details and hiring process before sharing sensitive information or starting work.
Tell prospective employers when you can interview and when the assignment ends if that information affects availability. Do not promise immediate full-time availability while accepting a contract that requires full-time exclusivity. A short, clearly bounded assignment may provide income and relevant evidence; an unclear engagement can consume the time and cash needed for a better search.
Protect yourself from job and contract scams
Stop and verify before paying or sharing sensitive information. Warning signs include:
- A demand for an upfront fee to obtain the job, training or access to assignments.
- A check that you must deposit and then use to forward money or purchase gift cards.
- Instructions to buy equipment from a designated “vendor” with funds supplied by the supposed employer.
- Requests for identity documents, banking details or tax information before you have verified the employer and hiring process.
- A rushed offer with no interview, no written scope or no identifiable payer.
Verify the employer through an independently located official channel, not only through contact details in an unsolicited message. Confirm the domain, role, manager or staffing contact, payment method and written terms. If the request remains inconsistent, stop the process and do not send money.
A practical weekly routine
A repeatable routine keeps a slow market from turning into random activity.
- Review your constraints and remove roles that fail a non-negotiable condition.
- Check fresh employer, board, network, staffing and marketplace listings in separate searches.
- Select a small number of openings where your evidence matches the stated deliverable.
- Submit tailored applications and record every required field in your tracker.
- Contact a relevant professional or recruiter with a specific question or referral request, not a generic appeal for any job.
- Follow up on active conversations at the interval the employer or intermediary gave you.
- Review outcomes at the end of the week and change one variable—occupation keywords, geography, arrangement or proof—based on evidence from your funnel.
This routine does not guarantee interviews. Its purpose is to keep your search diversified, verifiable and aligned with the kinds of work you can actually accept.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways for a U.S.-focused search
- The Federal Reserve’s 2026 reports describe subdued growth and added difficulty for some workers, not a universal halt in hiring.
- LinkedIn Economic Graph’s 2025 analysis shows why remote-only applications can be crowded: availability fell faster than demand in its dataset, and more than one in five analyzed U.S. job seekers applied only to remote roles.
- The January 2026 LinkedIn Economic Graph and American Staffing Association report supports adding contracts to your search, while offering no guarantee of security or growth in your occupation.
- BLS telework tables are the appropriate starting point for judging remote prospects in a specific occupation and industry.
- Every offer deserves a direct comparison of arrangement, location, compensation, duration, work conditions, benefits and protections.
