The best bargain is not the item with the biggest discount label. It is the product you actually need, at a competitive total price, from a seller whose delivery, return, refund, and payment terms you accept. Set a target price first, compare identical products, calculate the delivered total, test the discount against current market prices, and check the seller before paying.
The nine tips below turn bargain hunting into a repeatable process. They are based on consumer guidance from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Prices, taxes, fees, return rights, and fraud protections vary by country and seller, so treat the process as a framework rather than a guarantee of savings.

1. Start with a need and a target price
Write down what you need before opening a shopping site. Include the minimum acceptable specifications, how soon you need it, and a price or price range that would make the purchase worthwhile. This prevents a dramatic banner or countdown timer from creating an artificial need.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDefine your “buy” line
- Need: the job the item must perform.
- Must-have specifications: model, capacity, dimensions, compatibility, condition, or warranty.
- Acceptable alternatives: features you can give up without reducing usefulness.
- Target price: the maximum total you are prepared to pay, not merely the listed item price.
- Timing: whether you can wait for a lower price or must buy immediately.
A promotion should trigger comparison, not an automatic purchase. If the offer does not meet your target after shipping, taxes, mandatory fees, and any required bundle, walk away. A deal on an unwanted item is spending, not saving.
2. Compare the exact same item
A fair comparison starts with the product identity, not a similar title or photograph. Record the manufacturer and model number, then match the details that change value.
#1 Best Overall
Build an apples-to-apples specification note
- Manufacturer, model, generation, and stock-keeping or part number.
- Size, quantity, color, material, capacity, and included accessories.
- New, used, open-box, refurbished, returned, or clearance condition.
- Warranty length, coverage, and who handles a claim.
- Regional version, plug, language, compatibility, or carrier restrictions where relevant.
A lower price may reflect a smaller size, an older generation, missing accessories, or a refurbished condition. Save the product page or write down the identifying details before comparing another seller. If you cannot confirm that two listings describe the same configuration, treat them as different offers rather than declaring a winner.
3. Compare the full delivered price
Use the amount you will actually pay at checkout as the comparison figure. Add shipping, handling, delivery surcharges, taxes, service fees, and any mandatory protection or installation charge. A product with a lower headline price can become more expensive once these items are added.

Total delivered cost = item price − unconditional discount + shipping and handling + mandatory fees + applicable tax.
Keep conditional savings separate. A coupon that requires another purchase, a membership, or a minimum basket should not reduce the product’s price in your comparison unless you would meet that condition anyway.
| Comparison point | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Product identity | Model, size, quantity, condition, included items | Prevents a cheaper but inferior configuration from appearing to win |
| Base price | Current price before conditional promotions | Shows the seller’s ordinary offer |
| Delivery | Shipping, handling, delivery date, and location limits | Reveals costs and delays hidden from the headline |
| Mandatory charges | Taxes and unavoidable service or payment fees | Produces a realistic checkout total |
| Terms | Return, refund, warranty, price-match, and adjustment rules | Measures the risk attached to the price |
For stores that reveal taxes only after you enter an address, compare the final checkout totals for the same destination. Do not assume “free shipping” means free returns or that a displayed price includes every charge.

4. Test whether the discount is genuinely meaningful
A crossed-out price, “save 70%” badge, or suggested retail price is not proof that you are saving 70%. Compare the current offer with prices for the identical item at other sellers and with the item’s recent normal price when you have that information.
Question the reference price
Reference prices can be based on a suggested price that is higher than the store’s usual selling price. The FTC warns that liquidation and going-out-of-business sales may calculate a discount from such a suggested price rather than from the price customers typically paid. The percentage can look impressive while the actual market savings are small or nonexistent.
Separate real savings from a lower starting price
- Record the current total from at least two credible sellers.
- Check whether the same model is regularly offered near the “sale” price.
- Ask whether the discount applies to the exact size and condition you want.
- Exclude a claimed saving that depends on buying unwanted items.
- Value a lower-risk seller or better return policy when prices are close.
There is no universal savings percentage that these methods guarantee. The result depends on the item, timing, location, and seller competition.
5. Read every condition before chasing a promotion
Promotions often have the most important information in eligibility rules. Read the terms before spending time collecting a code or rearranging your basket.
Look for restrictions such as
- Minimum purchase or a limit on the number of discounted units.
- Required bundles, subscriptions, memberships, or automatic renewals.
- Excluded brands, models, colors, categories, clearance items, or locations.
- One-use, account-specific, app-only, or new-customer eligibility.
- Expiration times, limited quantities, and whether codes can be combined.
- Store-credit, gift-card, or payment-method requirements.
Liquidators and closing stores generally may not honor coupons, returns, or store credits. Confirm the policy before assuming a familiar promotion works there. If the offer requires buying items you would not otherwise choose, compare the bundle’s total with buying only what you need elsewhere.

6. Use comparison sites and price alerts with judgment
Comparison tools can quickly locate sellers and show price changes, but their rankings are not automatically neutral. Some sites accept payment for placement or may display only participating merchants.
Audit how the tool works
- Read the site’s explanation of rankings, sponsored results, and merchant inclusion.
- Check whether the displayed price includes shipping, taxes, and fees or only the item price.
- Open the seller’s listing and verify the model, condition, stock, and delivery promise.
- Compare the result with at least one independent search or a known retailer.
- Set a price alert only after confirming that the alert tracks the exact configuration you want.
A price history or alert is evidence about movement, not a guarantee that today’s price is good. A temporary drop can still be expensive compared with another seller, and a low listing can disappear before you complete checkout. Treat comparison tools as search aids while making the final decision from the seller’s full terms.
7. Use coupons and shopping apps only when the math works
Search for store-specific coupons, discount codes, free-shipping offers, and rewards, but verify that the benefit applies to your exact order. Entering a code that does not qualify can waste time and may cause you to add unnecessary products.
Calculate the net benefit
Subtract the actual discount from the extra cost created by the promotion. For example, a code that saves $15 but requires $60 of products you did not plan to buy is not a $15 saving on your intended purchase. Include membership charges, shipping changes, and any loss of a better standalone offer.

Consider the information tradeoff
Shopping apps may offer alerts, codes, discounts, or rewards while requesting personal information or access to device data. Read the app’s privacy information and permissions. Decide whether the expected saving justifies the data requested, and decline permissions that are not needed for the feature you intend to use.
Rank #4
Check whether rewards arrive immediately, expire, require a later purchase, or are issued as store credit. A reward that cannot be used under your normal buying pattern has less value than an immediate reduction in the checkout total.
8. Check the seller and investigate reviews
Seller reliability is part of the bargain. A very low price on an expensive brand-name product can signal a counterfeit, stolen product, misrepresented condition, or an unreliable fulfillment chain. Search the company or product name with terms such as “complaint” or “scam” before paying.
Read reviews as evidence, not a score
- Check where the reviews appear and whether the seller controls or moderates them.
- Read recent negative and positive reviews for specific details about the exact model.
- Look for patterns involving counterfeit goods, late delivery, missing parts, or refused refunds.
- Consider the reviewer’s history and whether comments appear copied, generic, or unrelated.
- Separate reviews of the product from reviews of the marketplace or third-party seller.
Ratings can be fake or misleading. A high average does not resolve a repeated complaint about the condition or return process, and a single angry review is not proof by itself. Give more weight to consistent, detailed experiences that match the listing you are considering.

9. Check exit terms and keep proof of the offer
Before you submit payment, read delivery, return, refund, price-match, and post-purchase price-adjustment policies. These terms determine what happens if the item arrives late, differs from the description, is damaged, or becomes cheaper shortly after you buy.
Confirm the practical details
- Latest promised delivery date and whether the seller can ship to your address.
- Return window, exclusions, restocking charges, return shipping responsibility, and condition requirements.
- Refund method and expected timing, including whether shipping is refundable.
- Warranty provider and the procedure for defective or counterfeit goods.
- Price-match or post-purchase adjustment deadline, eligible competitors, and exclusions.
Preserve evidence
Keep the receipt, order confirmation, product description, promotion terms, and correspondence. For an in-store advertised offer, photograph the shelf tag or sign when practical. If the checkout price differs from the displayed price, pause and ask the seller to correct it before paying; if you proceed, save evidence of both amounts and report the discrepancy promptly.

How to rank competing offers
When two offers are close, use a consistent decision rule rather than chasing the lowest headline number. Score each offer on the factors below, giving extra weight to the factors that matter for your purchase.
| Factor | Questions to ask | Typical decision signal |
|---|---|---|
| Exact product | Is the model, size, condition, and included equipment identical? | Reject a lower price for a different configuration |
| Total cost | What will the same destination and payment method cost at checkout? | Prefer the lower unconditional delivered total |
| Restrictions | Are there bundles, minimums, exclusions, or account requirements? | Discounts that force unwanted spending lose value |
| Seller credibility | Can you verify the seller, reviews, inventory, and contact path? | Paying slightly more may reduce fraud and fulfillment risk |
| After-sale terms | Can you return, repair, or obtain a refund if something goes wrong? | Prefer clear, workable terms over ambiguous promises |
| Privacy cost | Does an app or rewards program require data you do not want to share? | Skip a small saving that requires an unacceptable data tradeoff |
A 10-minute pre-purchase checklist
- State the need, must-have specifications, and target total price.
- Copy the exact model, size, condition, and included accessories into your notes.
- Check at least two offers for that same configuration.
- Add shipping, handling, taxes, and mandatory fees for your destination.
- Compare the current totals rather than trusting a crossed-out reference price.
- Read promotion exclusions, minimums, bundles, expiration, and payment requirements.
- Review the seller’s reputation and detailed complaints or reviews.
- Read delivery, return, refund, warranty, and price-adjustment terms.
- Decide whether any coupon, app, reward, or privacy tradeoff improves the net deal.
- Save the listing, terms, receipt, and any advertised price before completing the purchase.
What to do when a deal goes wrong
The checkout total is higher
Stop before payment if possible. Recheck whether shipping, tax, a service fee, or a conditional coupon changed the amount. Capture the advertised and checkout totals, then ask the seller to explain or correct the discrepancy.
The item is different or defective
Photograph the packaging and product, retain all paperwork, and contact the seller through the documented channel within the stated return or complaint period. Refer to the saved listing and the seller’s written policy rather than relying on a verbal promise.
The seller will not honor the stated terms
Escalate using the seller’s formal complaint process and keep a timeline of contacts. If the matter involves suspected fraud or a counterfeit product, report it to the appropriate consumer-protection or law-enforcement authority in your jurisdiction and notify your payment provider promptly.
Where bargain hunting stops being a bargain
Decline the purchase when the item is outside your need, the “saving” depends on unwanted spending, the seller cannot be verified, the final total is unclear, or the return and refund path is unusable. A transparent offer at a fair total price is usually safer than a spectacular discount with hidden conditions.
The FTC’s practical summary is simple: “Comparison shopping is your best bet.” Apply that comparison to the exact product, the complete delivered cost, the seller, the terms, and—when an app is involved—the information you exchange for the reward.
