Check the official unclaimed-property program in every state where you have lived or done business, then contact the paying agency directly if you are looking for a particular refund, benefit, rebate or other payment. A multistate search can find many records, but it is not a complete search for every government-held asset. The correct route depends on who holds the money and what kind of payment it is.
Use the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) state locator to reach official state programs. What “a state agency owes me” can mean
People use that phrase for several different situations. Identifying the situation first prevents a dead-end search.

State governments hold most unclaimed money, but a state database is not a government-wide ledger. Property may be reported to a state connected to the holder, so the state where you live now is not necessarily the only state to check. If you can identify the original payer, that payer’s records are usually the fastest route for a specific missing transaction.

How much does the search cost?
Searching and starting a claim through an official state program cost nothing. You do not need a device, subscription, book or paid database. MissingMoney is also a free convenience for participating states. A private finder may offer to handle paperwork, but paying one is not necessary to search or submit a claim yourself.
Be cautious if anyone says a fee is required before a government payment can be released. An upfront charge is not part of the official state search route. Independently open the state’s .gov website or use NAUPA’s locator instead of relying on a caller’s or text message’s link.
Step 1: List every state that could be connected to you
Make a search list before opening a database. Include every state where you have lived and every state where you have done business. Former residences, a business location, an employer, a bank, an insurer or another holder can create a state connection even when you no longer live there.

A single owner can have separate properties reported in several states, and each state controls its own search and claim process. If you are checking for an estate or an inherited asset, add the states connected to the deceased person as well.
Current residence is only one clue. The state associated with the holder or the original transaction may be different from your current state, which is why a complete list of former residences and business connections matters.
Step 2: Reach the official state programs through NAUPA
Open NAUPA’s state locator and select each state on your list. The locator is a directory to the state programs that provide the authoritative search and claim instructions. Use the state’s own website for the final result, identity requirements and claim submission.
State programs can use different labels, forms and verification steps. One state may ask you to upload documents online while another may require a mailed form or notarized information. There is no single checklist or processing time that applies nationwide; the state claim page controls those details.
Check that the address is an official government site before entering identifying information. Bookmark the legitimate claim page so that later status checks do not depend on an email or message link.

Step 3: Run a multistate search, then verify it on the state site
Most states participate in MissingMoney, a free search service. Enter your name and review the states returned by the search. Treat it as a convenience and a first pass, not as a universal database: participation does not mean every state or every type of government payment is represented.
When a result appears, follow the record to the identified state’s official program. Confirm the owner name, property type and any last-known information shown there. Begin the claim only from that official state site. Search the state sites directly as well, because a direct search can cover a participating state record that you did not find through the aggregator and can identify states that are not included in the multistate search.
A blank MissingMoney result therefore does not prove that no state property exists. It may mean that a relevant state is not included, that the record is indexed differently, or that the money belongs to an asset category held in another system.

Step 4: Search all useful name variations
Run separate searches for:
- Your current legal name.
- Former names, including a name before marriage or after a legal change.
- Common spelling variations, typographical errors and abbreviated versions.
- A business or organization name if the property may belong to a business.
- A relative’s name when you may be an heir or authorized representative.
A relative’s listing is a lead, not proof that you can claim the property. The state program decides what evidence establishes heirship, personal-representative authority or another legal right to act. Do not submit a claim as the owner merely because the name is familiar.
Keep a simple log of the exact spelling used, the state searched and the date. That record prevents you from repeating the same search while you work through a long list of former names or family members.
Step 5: Understand what a match does—and does not—show
A database match means the program has a record associated with the search terms. It does not conclusively establish that you own the money. The state reviews identity, ownership and, where applicable, heirship before releasing funds.
Compare the record’s name and property description with what you know. If the details are unfamiliar, do not guess at an ownership connection or provide documents to an unofficial intermediary. Use the state program’s claim instructions or contact information to ask what relationship the claimant must prove.
A listing also does not tell you that a payment is immediately available or that the amount shown is final. The responsible program determines whether the claim is valid, what evidence is sufficient and how any approved payment is delivered.

Step 6: File through the official state claim process
- Open the claim instructions on the state program’s official website from the NAUPA locator or from the state’s own government site.
- Read the required-document list for the particular property and claimant type. Requirements vary by state and may differ for an individual, business, estate, heir or authorized representative.
- Enter the claimant information exactly as requested. Use the name variation that matches the record and explain any legal name change where the form asks for it.
- Upload or mail only the documents requested by that state. Follow file-format, notarization, mailing and identification instructions precisely.
- Save the confirmation number, a copy of the submission and the date sent. Use the state program’s status channel for follow-up.
Searching and filing through an official state program are free. The general guidance available across states does not establish one universal review period, payment method or deadline, so rely on the instructions for the state holding the record.
If the state requests more information, send it through the same official channel and retain a copy. Do not assume that a document accepted by one state will satisfy another state’s requirements.
When you expected a particular payment
If you know which agency owed you money, do not rely only on an unclaimed-property search. Contact that agency’s payment, finance or customer-service office and describe the transaction clearly.

Prepare the facts the agency needs
- What the payment was for, such as a refund, benefit, reimbursement or settlement.
- The date you expected it and any date shown on a notice.
- Whether it was supposed to arrive by paper check, electronic transfer or another method.
- Your name as it appeared on the application or account, including a former name if relevant.
- Any case, account, claim or payment reference number you have.
Ask whether the agency issued the payment, whether it was returned or cancelled, where it was sent and whether the agency can request a reissue. Explain that you are checking a specific missing payment rather than asking a general unclaimed-property question. The agency may have a record even when the payment has not yet been reported to a state program.
If the agency says the payment was transferred to a state, ask which state and under what owner name it was reported. That information can make the state search more precise, but still verify the result on the official state site.
Returned Treasury-issued payments
Federal agencies keep separate payment records. When a Treasury-issued payment is returned, it is sent back to the responsible agency. Contact that agency to locate the payment or learn whether a replacement can be issued; a state unclaimed-property search will not substitute for that federal record check.
Use the database that matches the asset
The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service warns: “There is no government-wide, centralized information service or database on how unclaimed government assets may be obtained.” The type of asset determines the right search.

These examples are not interchangeable. If you know the asset category, start with the program designed for it instead of assuming a state listing will contain the record.

How to decide which route to use first
- You have no specific payment in mind: search every relevant state through NAUPA, then use MissingMoney as a multistate convenience and search state sites directly.
- You have a named state agency and an expected date: contact that agency first with the payment type, date and delivery method, then search state unclaimed-property records if the agency says the payment was returned or transferred.
- You suspect a federal asset: identify the federal program for that asset type and contact the responsible agency; do not treat a state search as complete.
- You are checking for someone who died: search the person’s former states and names, but file only under the state’s heirship or representative rules.
Scam warnings and safe-search habits
The Federal Trade Commission warns about unexpected calls and texts that promise unclaimed money, create urgency, request personal information or demand a processing fee. Those characteristics are warning signs, not evidence that a claim exists.
- Do not click a link in an unexpected message about a refund or unclaimed property.
- Do not pay an upfront fee to search or to release a supposed government payment.
- Do not provide a Social Security number, bank login or identity document to a caller whose identity you have not independently verified.
- Navigate to the state government site yourself or use NAUPA’s locator, then use the contact details published there.
- For a known payment, call the agency using a number from its official site or a notice you already trust.
Official state searches and claims do not require a paid finder. A private service may offer to submit paperwork, but it is not necessary to perform the search or start an official claim.
If your first search finds nothing
Broaden the state list
Recheck every state where you lived or did business, and consider states connected to a holder such as a financial institution or employer. Property can be reported in a state other than your current residence.

Repeat the search under former names, spelling variants and business names. If you are an heir, search the deceased person’s names rather than assuming your own name will appear.
Switch to the payer
If you expected one identifiable payment, stop treating it as a general database problem. Ask the paying agency whether it issued, returned, cancelled or reissued the payment.
Choose the asset-specific program
For federal securities or payments, HUD/FHA mortgage-insurance refunds, credit-union shares or bankruptcy-court funds, use the relevant federal or court process. A blank state result cannot rule out those assets.
Keep a claim file
Save the state name, search terms, property identification number, claim confirmation, documents sent and every agency response. Record the date of each contact and the next action requested. This is especially important when an estate or an authorized representative is involved, because the state may ask for proof of authority that is different from ordinary identity verification.

Use only the status instructions supplied by the official program. If the state asks for additional information, respond through the same official channel and retain a copy. Do not send sensitive documents in response to an unsolicited text or call.

What you should expect at the end
A successful search produces a possible record, not an automatic payment. The state or agency must confirm that the claimant is the owner, heir or authorized representative. The responsible program determines the documents, review method, payment method and timing. Once you identify the holder and follow its instructions, you have taken the route that can actually resolve the claim.
