1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStart with 211 and your state, local, or tribal housing agency. Tell the referral specialist whether you need help with current rent, rent arrears, a security deposit, utilities, or a mortgage payment. Those offices can identify open government programs and refer households that do not qualify to community and nonprofit providers.
There is no single nationwide nonprofit grant application that guarantees a rent or mortgage payment. Eligibility, available funds, covered costs, deadlines, documents, and payment methods are set by each local program. Mortgage assistance is especially program-specific, so contact your loan servicer about foreclosure-prevention options while you look for local aid.

What “nonprofit rent or mortgage grants” usually means
Families generally are not applying for a federal grant in the way a university, city, or nonprofit organization might apply for a project grant. They are seeking emergency housing assistance administered by a state agency, county, city, tribal nation, community action organization, or nonprofit partner. The assistance may be called a grant, emergency payment, rental assistance, arrears assistance, homelessness-prevention aid, or mortgage assistance.
Federal grant listings can be useful for organizations, but they are not a directory of personal rent checks. A household with a bill due should begin with local benefits and referral systems, not assume that searching Grants.gov will produce an individual award.

USAGov notes that every state has its own eligibility rules. A program may be limited to residents of a particular county, households below an income threshold, people facing an eviction notice, or applicants with a documented hardship. Funding can open and close during the year, and a program that helped neighbors previously may no longer be accepting applications.
The fastest way to locate help
1. Call 211 and describe the exact bill
Call 211 or use your local 211 referral directory. Say where you live and specify the need: current rent, past-due rent, a security deposit, utilities, a mortgage payment, or foreclosure prevention. Ask for both public programs and nonprofit or community providers.
United Way 211 reported 9.1 million referrals for housing, homelessness, and utility-bill assistance in 2025. That figure is the network’s reported referral count, not a promise that every caller will receive funds. A referral specialist can still save time by identifying agencies that serve your city, county, state, or tribal nation.
2. Check state, county, city, and tribal housing offices
Use the housing or human-services website for your state, county, city, or tribal nation. Search for “emergency rental assistance,” “rent arrears,” “homelessness prevention,” “housing stability,” or “mortgage assistance.” CFPB recommends checking at each of these geographic levels because programs and eligibility rules differ.
Local government offices, public libraries, and cultural centers may know which agencies are currently taking applications. Ask whether an office maintains a referral list for nonprofit rent assistance even when its own program is closed.
3. Ask for referrals when you do not qualify
Not qualifying for a government program does not necessarily mean there is no help. USAGov says a state or local agency may refer an ineligible applicant to a community or nonprofit organization. Ask the intake worker, 211 specialist, or housing office to make that referral explicitly and to identify any application deadline.
4. Search using your location and the expense
Online searches work best when they include your city or county and the exact expense. Try combinations such as:

- “[city or county] emergency rental assistance”
- “[city or county] nonprofit rent assistance”
- “[state] rent arrears program”
- “[county] mortgage assistance”
- “[tribal nation] housing assistance”
Confirm that a result belongs to the administering agency or a clearly identified nonprofit partner. Local program pages should state the service area, application method, current status, and contact information.
Prepare a clear request before you call
Write down the facts an intake worker will need: your city, county, state or tribal area; the number of people in the household; the exact amount owed; the months covered by the balance; and the date payment is due. Note whether you have a lease, a pay-or-quit notice, an eviction filing, a utility shutoff notice, or a foreclosure letter. For a mortgage, keep the servicer’s name, loan number, number of missed or at-risk payments, and any stated deadline nearby.
Organize readable copies of identification, proof of address, lease or mortgage statement, notices, income records, and landlord or servicer contact information. Ask each administrator whether electronic files, photographs, or paper copies are accepted. A checklist from the actual program is more reliable than a generic list because documentation rules vary.
Rent assistance: what to ask each program
Before spending time on an application, ask the administrator the questions below. Programs can differ even within the same state.

|---|---|
| Where must the household live? | Some funds serve one city, county, state, or tribal area only. |
| What costs are covered? | A program may pay current rent, arrears, a deposit, utilities, or only one of those expenses. |
| What income or hardship rules apply? | Each state and local program sets its own eligibility standards and may require proof of income or a qualifying crisis. |
| Is the application window open? | Funding can be exhausted or paused even when an agency’s general information page remains online. |
| How long can processing take? | CFPB warns that applications can take time; a pending application is not the same as an approved payment. |
| Which documents are required? | Knowing the list in advance reduces delays and lets you obtain missing records quickly. |
| Must the landlord participate? | Some programs pay the landlord directly or require a landlord form; others may use a different payment process. |
| Who receives the money? | Payment may go to the household, landlord, utility provider, or another designated payee. |
Documents commonly requested
Each administrator sets its own list, so do not assume that producing these items guarantees eligibility. Ask what applies to your case and whether copies or electronic files are accepted.
- Identification and proof of address
- A current lease or other evidence of the rental arrangement
- Landlord contact and payment information
- Records showing the amount and period of rent owed
- Income information for household members, if required
- An eviction notice, late notice, utility shutoff notice, or other evidence of urgency, if required
- Bank or payment information if the program pays the household rather than the landlord
Mortgage help requires a different track
Contact the loan servicer immediately
If you are behind on a mortgage or expect to miss a payment, call the company listed on your mortgage statement. Ask specifically about current foreclosure-prevention and loss-mitigation options, the documents needed, and the deadline for submitting them. United Way 211 advises homeowners struggling with payments to contact the lender or servicer directly.
A nonprofit referral may exist, but the sources do not establish broad, universally available nonprofit mortgage grants. Treat any mortgage payment program as narrowly defined until the administrator confirms its eligibility rules, funding, and payment process.

Use a HUD-approved housing counselor
A HUD-approved housing counselor can help you understand available housing options and prepare questions for the servicer. Ask 211, a local housing office, or a referral service for a counselor serving your area. Counseling does not itself guarantee a grant or a change to your loan.

A limited example: HOPWA
HUD’s Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS (HOPWA) program lists short-term rent, mortgage, and utility payments among activities that may be available to eligible people living with HIV/AIDS and their families. This is a specific program category with its own eligibility and local administration. It is not evidence that every family can obtain mortgage aid through a nonprofit.
Apply quickly, but verify before submitting
- Write down the deadline. Record the date of an eviction hearing, pay-or-quit notice, utility shutoff, or upcoming mortgage payment. Tell every referral source how soon the risk occurs.
- Confirm the program is open. Ask whether funds remain, whether applications are being accepted, and whether a waitlist is active.
- Request the complete checklist. Get the required income, lease, arrears, identity, landlord, or servicer documents from the administrator.
- Ask how payment is made. Confirm whether money goes to you, the landlord, utility company, or loan servicer, and whether that party must complete a form.
- Submit as soon as a plausible program is identified. CFPB says processing can take time. Keep a copy of everything and note the date, method, and confirmation number.
- Follow up using the official contact method. Ask whether the file is complete and whether anything else is needed. Do not assume silence means approval.
- Keep pursuing urgent referrals. If an eviction is imminent, contact 211, a HUD-approved counselor, or local legal aid while the application is pending.
What happened to COVID-era Emergency Rental Assistance?
The U.S. Department of the Treasury reports that the Emergency Rental Assistance programs collectively provided more than $46 billion to communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. That is a historical total, not a statement that the same funds are available now.
Treasury says the ERA2 period of performance has ended and grantees may no longer use ERA2 funds to assist renters. If a search result still advertises ERA2, check Treasury’s current information and ask the local administrator what replacement resources, if any, are open. Do not delay an urgent request while relying on an expired COVID-era program.
A national nonprofit example—verify current availability
Hope+Door describes emergency rent relief for families with school-age children facing unexpected hardship and provides state-specific application access. It is an example of a nonprofit with a defined target group, not a universal national benefit. Before applying, verify that your state is served, that the application window is open, that your household meets the current rules, and what costs the program will pay.
If the first program is closed or cannot pay the full amount
Ask the administrator for the next referral rather than ending the search. A closed city program may still know of a county, state, tribal, community, or nonprofit provider. Tell each new contact the amount already covered, the remaining balance, and the date of the next deadline. If one agency cannot pay the entire balance, ask whether it coordinates with another provider or can refer you for the remainder.
Keep a simple log with the agency name, phone number or website, staff contact, date of the call, eligibility answer, documents requested, and follow-up date. This prevents repeated calls from losing important deadlines and helps you explain your situation consistently.

Urgent eviction or foreclosure situations
If eviction is pending
Tell 211 and every agency you contact that an eviction is imminent or already filed. Ask for emergency rent assistance, homelessness-prevention funds, shelter or relocation referrals, and legal aid. CFPB notes that free legal aid may be available based on income. A legal-aid office can explain the deadlines and notices that apply in your jurisdiction; do not wait for a grant decision before asking about your legal rights.
If foreclosure is a risk
Contact the servicer before the account reaches a later stage of foreclosure. Ask for the loss-mitigation department, the documents required, and the date by which they must be received. At the same time, request a HUD-approved housing counselor through a local referral source. Keep written records of calls and submissions.

How to compare offers without losing time
When several agencies respond, compare them on the points below rather than choosing only by the word “grant.”
| Comparison point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Service area | City, county, state, or tribal boundaries and any residency date requirement |
| Eligible household | Income limits, household composition, hardship, eviction status, disability, or other program-specific criteria |
| Covered expense | Current rent, arrears, deposit, utilities, mortgage, or a combination |
| Funding status | Open intake, waitlist, paused intake, or funds exhausted |
| Processing | Expected review steps and whether an urgent case can be flagged |
| Required documents | Income, identity, lease, notices, landlord or servicer forms, and any special records |
| Payment destination | Household, landlord, utility provider, or loan servicer |
| Other obligations | Any follow-up, recertification, landlord cooperation, or use restrictions |
Record the answers and the staff member’s contact information. If one program cannot cover your full balance, ask whether it can coordinate with another provider or refer you for the remaining amount.
Common mistakes that delay assistance
- Searching only for “free grants.” Local agencies may call the benefit emergency assistance or homelessness prevention instead.
- Assuming one national rule applies. Eligibility and covered costs vary by state and local administrator.
- Waiting for a perfect program. CFPB advises starting local applications promptly because processing can take time.
- Ignoring landlord or servicer participation. A payment may require a form or confirmation from the party owed.
- Treating an old webpage as proof of funding. ERA2 has ended, and other local programs can close or change.
- Applying for mortgage aid without calling the servicer. A nonprofit referral does not replace the servicer’s foreclosure-prevention process.
- Confusing organization grants with household aid. Grants.gov listings generally concern eligible organizations or defined programs, not direct personal rent checks.
A practical call script
Use a short, specific description so the referral worker can route you correctly:
“I live in [city, county, state or tribal area]. I need help with [current rent, rent arrears, a deposit, utilities, or a mortgage payment]. The amount is due on [date], and I have [an eviction notice, late notice, or no notice]. What programs are open, what documents do they require, and do you have nonprofit or legal-aid referrals if I do not qualify?”

What you can realistically expect
The most reliable expectation is a referral and an eligibility review, not an automatic award. A local program may cover only certain months or costs, require landlord or servicer cooperation, or have no funds when you call. Starting with 211 and local housing offices gives you the best chance of finding the programs that actually serve your address, while contacting the mortgage servicer protects the separate foreclosure-prevention path.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are nonprofit rent grants available everywhere in the United States?
There is no single nationwide program with guaranteed household awards. Availability depends on the state, county, city, or tribal area, the household’s circumstances, current funding, and the costs the administrator covers. Call 211 and the relevant local housing office for active options.
Should I search Grants.gov for money to pay my rent?
Grants.gov primarily lists grants for eligible organizations and defined projects. It is not a directory of personal rent checks. Use 211, local housing agencies, and community referral networks instead.
Can 211 pay my mortgage or rent directly?
211 is generally a referral network. It can identify agencies and programs serving your location, while the actual administrator decides eligibility and payment. For mortgage trouble, contact your loan servicer directly about foreclosure-prevention and loss-mitigation options.
What if an application page still advertises ERA2 assistance?
Treasury says the ERA2 period of performance has ended and grantees may no longer use ERA2 funds to assist renters. Check the administering agency’s current status and ask 211 or the housing office about replacement resources.
Does HOPWA cover mortgage payments for any family?
HUD lists short-term rent, mortgage, and utility payments as possible HOPWA activities for eligible people living with HIV/AIDS and their families. Local administration and eligibility rules apply, so it is not a general mortgage grant for every household.
How quickly should I apply?
Apply as soon as you identify a plausible open program. CFPB warns that processing can take time. Ask about deadlines, whether a waitlist exists, and whether an eviction, utility shutoff, or foreclosure deadline can be flagged.
What happens if I do not qualify for the first program?
Ask the intake worker, 211 specialist, or housing office for nonprofit and community referrals. USAGov notes that a state or local agency may refer an applicant who does not qualify for its own program.
Who receives an approved payment?
The payment destination depends on the program. It may go to the household, landlord, utility provider, or mortgage servicer, and the party owed may need to complete a form. Confirm this before submitting an application.
The Bottom Line
Call 211, check your state, county, city, or tribal housing office, and ask for nonprofit referrals. Describe the exact expense and deadline, verify that funds and intake are open, and prepare the required documents. If a mortgage is at risk, contact the servicer and a HUD-approved housing counselor at the same time; local assistance is program-specific and never guaranteed.
