If you want free, in-person or volunteer-supported tax preparation, start with the IRS VITA/TCE site locator. Enter your ZIP code, choose a search distance, and filter the results for virtual service, language, appointments, weekend or evening hours. Then call the location before traveling to confirm its opening date, appointment policy, documents, and ability to handle your return.
VITA generally serves low-to-moderate-income taxpayers, people with disabilities, and taxpayers with limited English proficiency. TCE is designed especially for people age 60 and older and focuses on pension and retirement questions. Local sites decide which returns and services they can accept, so a program description is not a guarantee that every location can prepare your return.

How do I find free tax preparation near me?
The IRS VITA/TCE locator is the primary starting point. It shows participating sites by ZIP code and distance, along with details that can change during the filing season.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open the IRS VITA/TCE site locator.
- Enter your ZIP code and select a search radius that covers places you can realistically reach.
- Review the results for the service format and schedule you need. Available filters can include virtual appointments, language, appointment requirements, weekend hours, and evening hours.
- Open the listing for each promising site and note its opening date, phone number, services, and any instructions about appointments or documents.
- Contact the site before you go. Confirm that it is currently accepting taxpayers, whether an appointment is required, what tax situations it handles, and whether its listed hours still apply.
The IRS says locator records are updated regularly from February through April. A site may therefore appear in a search before it opens, change its hours, or stop accepting appointments after its schedule fills. The listing and the site itself are the authorities for current details.

Phone help when the locator is inconvenient
For VITA and general VITA/TCE site information, the IRS lists 800-906-9887. For AARP Foundation Tax-Aide site information, the IRS lists 888-227-7669. Phone assistance does not replace checking with the individual location: local appointment rules and accepted returns still vary.
VITA and TCE: what is the difference?
Both programs provide free tax assistance through trained volunteers, but they are aimed at somewhat different taxpayers. The distinction helps you choose where to begin, not whether a particular return will be accepted.
| Program | Typical audience | Particular strength | What can vary locally |
|---|---|---|---|
| VITA | Low-to-moderate-income taxpayers, people with disabilities, and people with limited English proficiency | Volunteer preparation or supported self-preparation for qualifying taxpayers | Any local income threshold, return types accepted, languages, hours, appointment rules, and volunteer expertise |
| TCE | People age 60 and older | Pension, retirement, and related tax questions | Whether a location accepts a particular return, its schedule, appointment process, and available volunteer expertise |
| IRS Free File | Taxpayers who meet the separate online eligibility rules for an available provider | Preparing and filing online yourself | Eligibility and provider terms; it is not a VITA or TCE site service |
Many TCE sites are operated by AARP Foundation Tax-Aide. The IRS directs taxpayers to its own locator and also points to the Tax-Aide locator for those sites. You can check both when you are looking for retirement-focused help.

VITA is generally intended for taxpayers with low to moderate income and also serves people with disabilities and limited English proficiency. There is no single nationwide dollar cutoff that applies to every VITA site. The IRS states:
“While the IRS does not set a program-wide income limit, individual VITA sites may establish their own.”
That means an older income figure copied from another filing season, or from one local organization, should not be treated as a universal current rule. Use the current locator listing and ask the selected site what eligibility standard it applies for the filing season you are using.
Questions to ask a VITA site
- Does this location have an income limit for the current filing season?
- Does it prepare returns for my filing status and tax situations?
- Can it serve my language, or provide an interpreter or translated materials?
- Does it support taxpayers with disabilities in the way I need?
- Does it offer volunteer preparation, supported self-preparation, or both?
Answering these questions before an appointment prevents a wasted trip. A site may be part of VITA but lack a volunteer certified in the specific tax expertise your return requires.

Is TCE right for me?
TCE particularly serves people age 60 and older and specializes in pension and retirement-related tax issues. This can make it a useful first choice if your return includes pension income, retirement distributions, or other retirement questions. The age focus does not guarantee that every TCE location accepts every retirement-related return, so describe your situation when you call.
The IRS says a majority of TCE sites are operated by AARP Foundation Tax-Aide. Search the IRS locator first, then consider the Tax-Aide locator or the IRS-listed phone number for Tax-Aide site information. Compare locations by distance, virtual availability, language, appointment requirements, and hours just as you would with VITA.
How to use the IRS site locator step by step
1. Search by ZIP code and distance
Begin with the ZIP code where you live or where you can obtain service. Set a radius large enough to include nearby communities, but not so large that the results become impractical. A result several miles away may have a different opening date or appointment policy from one closer to you.
2. Decide whether you need a physical or virtual option
If travel is difficult, apply the virtual-service filter when it is available. A virtual listing may still require document exchange, an appointment, or a particular communication method. Ask the site how the virtual process works and how you will submit identification and tax documents before scheduling.
Recommended Free Tools
3. Filter for language and schedule
Use the language filter if you want assistance in a language other than English. Also check weekend and evening filters if your work or caregiving schedule makes weekday daytime appointments impossible. Filters narrow the search; they do not replace a call to verify that the needed volunteer is available on the date you want.
4. Check appointment requirements
Some sites accept walk-ins, some require appointments, and some use different rules on different days. Read the listing for the appointment indicator, then call to confirm. Ask how early you should arrive, whether all taxpayers on a joint return must attend, and what happens if you need to reschedule.
5. Confirm opening and closing dates
Tax sites are seasonal. A listing can be present while a location is preparing to open, and a site may stop taking new returns before the end of the filing season. Confirm that the location is open on your intended date and that it is still accepting the type of appointment you need.

What should I bring to a VITA or TCE appointment?
Use the IRS What to bring instructions and Publication 3676-B before you leave home. The exact list depends on your circumstances, and the selected site may request additional items. Ask the site what it wants you to bring because services and procedures differ by location.

- Identification and the information the site requires to verify each taxpayer on the return.
- Income documents for the year being filed, including documents for wages, pensions, retirement distributions, and other income you received.
- Records supporting deductions, credits, payments, or expenses you plan to claim.
- Prior-year return information and tax-account details if the site asks for them to prepare or electronically file the return.
- Bank information needed for direct deposit or payment instructions, if applicable.
- Any notices or correspondence from a tax authority that affects the return.
This list is a planning framework, not a promise that every site will accept every document format or prepare every tax situation. The local volunteer coordinator can tell you which records are essential for that location’s process.
Ask about missing documents before the appointment
If a wage statement, retirement form, identity document, or prior-year detail is missing, call before booking or traveling. A volunteer may be unable to complete the return without it. Find out whether the site can begin a return and let you return later, or whether it requires a complete packet at the first appointment.
Will a local site prepare my return?
Do not assume that a VITA or TCE label means every return is in scope. Services depend on the volunteers available and on whether those volunteers are certified in the tax expertise needed for your situation. The IRS’s service information explains that some locations offer preparation while others support self-preparation with an IRS-certified volunteer.
Volunteer preparation
At a preparation site, a certified volunteer works through your information and prepares the return under the program’s procedures. Ask whether the location handles your filing status, income sources, dependents, credits, and retirement issues before you arrive. If the answer is uncertain, provide a concise description of the return when you call rather than waiting until check-in.
Supported self-preparation
Some listings identify a Self-Prep service. In that format, you prepare and file the return yourself while an IRS-certified volunteer is available to provide support. Confirm what software or equipment the location supplies, whether an appointment is needed, and which parts of the process the volunteer can review.
When a site may not be a fit
A site may decline a return because it lacks the required certification, cannot support the filing status or tax issue, has no appointment capacity, or is limited to a particular taxpayer group. That is a local service limitation, not a finding that you are ineligible for all free assistance. Ask the coordinator whether another nearby VITA or TCE site is better suited.

How to choose between nearby sites
When several results appear, rank them by the factors that affect whether your return can actually be completed.
- Tax expertise: Choose a site that confirms it can handle your income, filing status, credits, and retirement issues.
- Service format: Decide whether you want a volunteer to prepare the return or prefer Self-Prep with volunteer support.
- Age and program fit: Taxpayers age 60 and older with retirement questions may prefer to begin with TCE; other taxpayers may begin with VITA.
- Communication: Check language availability and whether the site can accommodate disability-related needs.
- Access: Compare distance, virtual service, appointment requirements, weekend availability, and evening hours.
- Seasonal capacity: Confirm that the location is open and still accepting appointments when you need it.
The closest listing is not always the best choice. A location farther away that confirms the relevant tax expertise may save you a second appointment and a second trip.
What happens before and during the visit?
Before you travel
- Call the selected location and confirm the appointment time or walk-in process.
- Describe unusual or retirement-related tax issues so the site can check volunteer coverage.
- Verify the document list, identification requirements, and how to provide missing information.
- Ask whether every taxpayer who must sign the return needs to attend.
- Confirm the site’s current address, entrance instructions, and accessibility arrangements.
At the site
Follow the location’s check-in and document-review process. If the site uses Self-Prep, clarify how to access the supported preparation system and when a certified volunteer will review your work. If a volunteer prepares the return, answer questions completely and point out any notices or prior-year issues that could affect the filing.
Before you leave
Ask what remains to be done, whether the return was submitted or still needs your signature, and how you will receive a copy. If the site cannot finish because a document or certification is missing, get a precise list of next steps and a method for confirming that the return can be completed later.
What if I cannot find an open or suitable site?
Search again with a different radius or format
Expand the ZIP-code search distance, check nearby ZIP codes, and apply or remove virtual, language, weekend, and evening filters one at a time. A narrow combination of filters can hide locations that would work if you can adjust one requirement.
Check both VITA and TCE options
If you are 60 or older, search TCE locations as well as VITA. A TCE site may have retirement expertise that a nearby VITA site does not, while a VITA site may offer a schedule or language that better fits your needs.
Call for the next opening
Listings change as volunteers complete training and as appointments fill. Ask whether the site maintains a cancellation list, has later-season dates, or knows of another participating location. The IRS site-information number can help you identify additional listings.

Consider IRS Free File separately
If you want to prepare and file online yourself, review IRS Free File as a separate option. Its eligibility rules and provider terms are different from VITA and TCE site eligibility. Qualifying for, or being unable to use, one option does not automatically determine access to the others.
Common mistakes that delay free tax help
Using an old income cutoff
Do not rely on a dollar threshold copied from an earlier tax year or another site’s page. The IRS does not set one program-wide VITA income limit, and individual sites may establish their own.
Arriving without confirming an appointment
A locator result does not prove that a walk-in is available. Call the site, especially when the listing says appointments are required or does not clearly state the policy.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Assuming every location handles retirement or complex issues
TCE’s retirement focus and VITA’s general audience are program descriptions. Local volunteer certifications determine which returns a site can prepare. Explain your tax situation before you travel.
Ignoring seasonal updates
Hours and availability can change between February and April. Recheck the listing and call shortly before the visit rather than relying on an earlier search.
Confusing Self-Prep with full preparation
A Self-Prep site supports you while you prepare the return; it is not necessarily a service where a volunteer completes every entry for you. Ask exactly what assistance is provided.
Quick Recap
A practical decision guide

| Evening or weekend access | Applying the schedule filters | That the hours are current and that appointments are still available |
