Start with the IRS VITA/TCE locator. Enter your ZIP code, set a distance, and filter for an open in-person or virtual site. VITA and TCE volunteers can help determine whether you qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), but each location sets its own hours, appointment rules, languages and return types. If you would rather prepare the return yourself, IRS Free File offers no-cost online options, including Guided Tax for taxpayers whose adjusted gross income (AGI) is $89,000 or less under the current IRS overview. This guide answers the practical question, “Where can I get free tax help near me?” without assuming that every site handles every return.
Where to get free EITC tax help
The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) locator is the main search tool for free tax preparation. It can show nearby sites, virtual services, distance, languages and availability. Search by ZIP code, then contact the specific site before traveling. Listings can change during the filing season, and a site may stop accepting returns when volunteer capacity is full.

If you cannot use the locator, call the IRS VITA/TCE help line at 800-906-9887. For TCE locations operated through AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, use the AARP Tax-Aide locator or call 888-227-7669. Most TCE sites are run by AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, although other community organizations also operate TCE sites.
Free help does not automatically mean every return can be prepared. A location may offer full preparation, facilitated self-assistance, or only limited services. Ask about your return before you share personal documents. Some sites may be able to prepare a federal return but not a state return, or may accept only certain income forms and filing situations.

VITA and TCE: which program fits?
| Program | Typical audience | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| VITA | Low-to-moderate income taxpayers; many sites also focus on people with disabilities and taxpayers with limited English proficiency. | Trained volunteers prepare eligible federal returns and, where offered, state returns. Some locations provide guided self-preparation instead. |
| TCE | Taxpayers age 60 and older, especially those with retirement-related questions. | Volunteer assistance with pensions, Social Security and other age-related issues. Most TCE sites are operated by AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, although other community organizations also run TCE sites. |
VITA is generally aimed at low-to-moderate income households, but there is no single threshold that safely applies to every site and tax year. One IRS public page describes many sites as serving people who generally make about $70,244 or less, while another IRS qualifying-taxpayers page lists $69,000 or less. Those figures appear in different page contexts and should not be averaged or treated as a permanent national rule. Check the current filing-year guidance and the individual site’s limits.
A site can impose a lower income ceiling, restrict the types of returns it accepts, or refer complex situations elsewhere. The locator listing and a phone call are more reliable than an old flyer or a friend’s experience. Ask specifically whether the site can handle self-employment income, multiple jobs, unemployment compensation, retirement income, dependents, a prior-year return or any other feature that makes your return different from a simple wage-only return.
How to use the IRS VITA/TCE locator
- Open the official IRS VITA/TCE locator. Use the IRS website rather than a search advertisement or an unsolicited text message. During the filing season, the locator is updated as sites open, close or change capacity.
- Enter your ZIP code or city and state. Set a travel radius that you can realistically reach. A site farther away may be the only one offering your language or a virtual appointment.
- Review the listing details. Note whether the service is in person, virtual or a facilitated self-assistance lab; the days and hours; the languages offered; and whether an appointment is required.
- Check the filing-year and service scope. Confirm that the site is preparing the tax year you need and can handle your household, income sources, dependents and state return if applicable. Volunteer expertise differs by location.
- Call before you go. Ask what documents are required, how appointments are made, whether walk-ins are accepted, when the site stops taking new clients, and whether an interpreter or accessibility accommodation is available.
- Protect your information. Do not send your Social Security number, identity documents or bank details through an unverified email or social-media account. Use the contact method shown in the official listing and follow the site’s instructions for secure document delivery.
Questions to ask the site
- Do you prepare returns that claim the EITC?
- Is this a full preparation appointment or guided self-preparation?
- Do you prepare both federal and state returns, and are there any state-specific limits?
- Do you accept my income forms, self-employment information, rental information or other items?
- Is an appointment mandatory, and what is the earliest available time?
- Which languages and accessibility services are available?
- What is the secure process for submitting documents before the appointment?
- How will I receive a copy of the completed return, and when will I approve it for filing?
A virtual listing is still site-specific. Ask whether you will speak with a volunteer by video or telephone, upload documents through a secure system, or complete entries yourself while a volunteer guides you. Confirm how identity verification and signatures work before sending anything. If a listing has no current hours or the telephone number does not work, return to the IRS locator rather than relying on an unofficial directory.

What to bring to a free tax-preparation appointment
Use the IRS “What to bring” checklist and Publication 3676-B as the controlling list. The documents depend on your household and income, so a generic checklist can leave out something important. The site may ask you to bring originals, copies or documents uploaded through a secure portal.
Identity and filing information
- A valid photo identification for you and, when required, your spouse.
- Social Security cards or IRS-approved documentation for everyone listed on the return, including children. Bring Individual Taxpayer Identification Number information when it applies.
- Dates of birth, current addresses and prior-year federal and state returns, if available.
- Bank routing and account numbers if you want direct deposit of a refund.
- Any IRS correspondence, identity-verification letter or notice that affects the filing.
Income and deduction records
- W-2 forms, 1099 forms and other statements for every job, benefit, contract, interest, dividend or retirement payment.
- Records of unemployment compensation and any other taxable income received during the year.
- Receipts or statements for deductions and credits that apply to your circumstances, such as education, childcare, health savings or retirement contributions.
- Information about payments already made, estimated tax, or an IRS notice that affects the return.
- Records for each source of earned income, including documentation needed to reconcile forms or explain amounts that differ from your own records.
Household and EITC details
- Information for each qualifying child or other dependent, including relationship, dates of birth and months lived with you when relevant.
- Childcare provider name, address and tax identification number if you paid for care and may claim a related credit.
- Any custody, residency or support documents the preparer asks for to establish a dependent’s eligibility.
- Marital-status information and the dates that affect filing status, if applicable.
Organize documents by person and by income type before the appointment. Keep a separate list of missing forms and questions. Do not guess at missing numbers. Tell the volunteer what is missing and ask whether a replacement wage statement or transcript is needed. A preparer may postpone filing until the information is verified.
Bring documents for everyone on the return, not only the person who made the appointment. If a spouse must approve or sign the return, ask the site whether both people need to attend or whether a permitted electronic or paper signature process is available. Never leave original documents unattended; take them home after the site confirms it has what it needs.

IRS Free File: a no-cost self-preparation alternative
If you are comfortable entering your own information online, IRS Free File provides two different approaches. Start from the IRS Free File page and review the provider’s current eligibility and state-return terms before creating an account.
| Option | Best for | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Free File Guided Tax | Taxpayers who want interview-style software to guide them through a federal return. | The current IRS overview states an AGI limit of $89,000 or less. Provider offers can impose additional eligibility rules, and state-return availability depends on the selected offer. |
| Free File Fillable Forms | People who understand tax forms and want to enter figures directly into electronic federal forms. | It is self-preparation, not volunteer assistance. You are responsible for choosing forms, checking calculations and meeting filing requirements. Confirm whether a state return is available separately. |
Free File is not the same as a free appointment. No volunteer reviews your documents unless you arrange separate assistance. Read the offer’s terms before entering data; the IRS describes the program as free for eligible users and prohibits participating providers from upselling or adding hidden fees for the covered federal service. A provider may still charge for an optional product or for a state service when its offer does not include that state return.
Use the IRS Free File eligibility and provider pages as your starting point, not a general web search. Open the provider through the IRS page so you are viewing the current offer. Check whether the offer covers only federal filing, whether a state return costs extra, and whether you are being asked to select an optional paid service. Save a copy of the filed return, confirmation and any payment or refund information.
When self-preparation is a poor fit
- You are unsure which people qualify as dependents or whether a child meets the EITC relationship and residency rules.
- You received several types of income and do not know which forms or schedules are required.
- You have an IRS notice, identity-theft concern, prior-year filing problem or unresolved filing-status issue.
- You need an interpreter, disability accommodation or someone to explain the entries as you work.
- You are not comfortable checking that names, Social Security numbers, bank details and credit amounts are correct before submitting.
In those situations, a VITA or TCE conversation can reduce the risk of omitting a form, although the site can still decline a return outside its scope. A facilitated self-assistance site may be a middle option: you enter information yourself while trained volunteers help you use the software, subject to that site’s availability and limits.
How the EITC fits into filing your return
You must file a federal income-tax return to claim the EITC, even if your income is low enough that you otherwise would not owe federal income tax. Use Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR. When you claim the credit with a qualifying child, attach Schedule EIC and provide the requested child information.

EITC rules, income limits and credit amounts are tied to the specific tax year. They change as legislation and inflation adjustments change, so do not rely on a prior-year chart or a social-media post. Use the IRS EITC eligibility materials or the EITC Assistant for the year you are filing, and ask the preparer to confirm the rules that apply to your filing status, earned income, investment income and household.

A VITA or TCE volunteer can help determine whether the information on your return supports an EITC claim. That is assistance with applying the law, not a guarantee that the IRS will allow the credit after processing. Keep the records used to establish income, identity, filing status and qualifying children. If the IRS later asks for documentation, respond using the instructions in its notice and keep copies of what you send.
The credit is claimed on the federal return; a state may have a separate credit or filing requirement. Ask the site whether it prepares your state return and whether state rules differ. Do not assume that a volunteer’s ability to prepare the federal return means the same site can complete every state form.
The IRS cannot issue EITC refunds before mid-February. The exact release date changes by filing season, and the hold applies to the entire refund when the EITC is claimed. Direct deposit and accurate identity information can affect how quickly the refund arrives after the legal release date. A delayed refund is not, by itself, proof that the credit was denied.

VITA and TCE volunteers receive tax-law training, and every return prepared at a participating site receives a quality review. Those controls are valuable, but they do not mean every site can handle every return. The IRS expressly says services vary by location because volunteer expertise, staffing and local resources differ.
Review the completed return before signing. Check names, Social Security numbers, filing status, dependents, bank details, income amounts and credit entries. Ask the preparer to explain anything you do not understand. You remain responsible for the information submitted under your name, even when a volunteer entered it.
Ask for a complete copy of the federal and state returns, schedules and any filing confirmation. Keep the copy with your tax records. If you notice an error before filing, tell the site immediately. If you discover a problem after filing, ask what correction process applies; a routine preparation site may not handle an amended return or a dispute.

Use only official IRS locator information to identify a site. A legitimate volunteer service should explain its process and should not pressure you to buy unrelated products, pay a surprise preparation fee or surrender account credentials. If a site cannot securely receive documents, ask whether an in-person alternative is available. Avoid sending tax documents through an unverified link, social-media message or personal email address that is not listed by the site.
When you need representation instead of return preparation
VITA and TCE are designed for preparing current returns, not for representing you in a dispute. If you have an examination, collection action, identity-theft case, amended-return problem or another controversy, look at the IRS Low Income Taxpayer Clinic program. Clinics may provide representation or advice to eligible taxpayers, but they are a different service from ordinary free tax preparation and have their own income and case criteria.
A clinic may help explain a notice or communicate with the IRS, while a VITA or TCE site may simply tell you that it cannot prepare the return involved. Contact the clinic through current IRS information and ask whether your issue and income meet its criteria.
A practical choice between the free options
| Your situation | Most sensible first step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want a person to review documents and explain the EITC. | Search VITA, or TCE if you are 60 or older. | Volunteers can discuss eligibility and prepare the return when the site accepts your situation. |
| You are 60 or older and have retirement-related questions. | Check TCE listings, including AARP Foundation Tax-Aide locations. | TCE’s focus is older taxpayers and retirement issues. |
| You can confidently complete federal forms online and your AGI is within the current Guided Tax limit. | Compare IRS Free File Guided Tax offers. | Interview-style software may be faster than finding an appointment. |
| You understand tax forms and want direct control over data entry. | Consider Free File Fillable Forms. | It is a federal self-filing route, but it does not provide a volunteer review. |
| Your return involves a dispute, prior-year problem or representation need. | Contact an IRS Low Income Taxpayer Clinic. | Clinics address tax problems rather than routine preparation. |
| No nearby site has the right language, hours or service scope. | Expand the locator radius and check virtual listings. | A virtual or more distant site may meet your needs, but confirm its process first. |
Whichever route you choose, verify the current tax year, eligibility rules, service scope and security process before submitting personal information. That short check is the best way to turn a “free tax help near me” search into an appointment or filing method that can actually support an EITC claim.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can VITA help me claim the Earned Income Tax Credit?
Yes. Trained VITA and TCE volunteers can help apply the EITC rules and prepare an eligible return, but the site must accept your filing situation and the applicable tax year. Ask the location specifically about EITC returns, qualifying-child information and any income forms you have.

What should I bring to a free tax preparation appointment?
Use the IRS “What to bring” checklist and Publication 3676-B. Generally gather identification, Social Security or ITIN information, prior returns, bank details for direct deposit, every W-2 and 1099, other income records, deduction and credit documents, and information about dependents and qualifying children. Follow the site’s instructions about originals, copies or secure uploads.
Can I file my taxes for free if I qualify for EITC?
You must file a federal return to claim EITC. You may use a VITA or TCE site if it accepts your return, or IRS Free File if you are comfortable preparing it yourself. Guided Tax is listed for AGI of $89,000 or less in the current IRS overview; provider and state-return terms still apply.
Is Free File the same as a free tax appointment?
No. Free File is self-preparation software or electronic forms. It does not provide a volunteer who reviews your documents. VITA and TCE provide volunteer-supported preparation or, at selected sites, guided self-preparation.
Recommended Free Tools
Do I need an appointment at a VITA or TCE site?
It depends on the location. The listing may show appointment requirements, walk-in availability and operating hours. Call before traveling, because sites can change schedules or stop accepting new returns when capacity is full.
What if my return is too complicated for a VITA site?
Ask the site before sharing documents. Services vary, and a location may limit self-employment, rental, prior-year or other returns. If you need representation for an examination, collection matter, identity-theft case or another dispute, look at an IRS Low Income Taxpayer Clinic instead.
When will an EITC refund arrive?
The IRS cannot issue a refund before mid-February when EITC is claimed. The exact release date changes by filing season, and the hold applies to the entire refund. Accurate information and direct deposit can help after the legal release date.
The Bottom Line
For a person to help with an EITC return, start with the official IRS VITA/TCE locator and confirm the site’s tax-year, income, language, appointment and document requirements. For self-preparation, compare current IRS Free File offers and state terms. EITC rules change by tax year, so verify the current IRS guidance and protect your personal information at every step.
