Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWhen Texas hiring cools, the most reliable approach is a broader, local search: use WorkInTexas, verify openings on employer career sites, get free help from a Workforce Solutions office, and compare each posting with Texas wage and projection data. The numbers show a mixed market—not a statewide shutdown—and none of the statewide measures identifies entry-level technology vacancies by itself.
What slower hiring looks like in Texas
“Slower” does not mean that every technology employer has stopped recruiting. It means employers may open fewer positions, take longer to decide, or screen more strictly for evidence of job-ready skills. Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) data shows why a targeted search matters.

| Measure | Period and value | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Texas nonfarm employment | 14,469,300 jobs; August 2026 dashboard value | Describes total statewide employment, not technology vacancies. |
| Seasonally adjusted unemployment | 4.4%; August 2026 dashboard value | Indicates the overall labor market, not the odds for a particular entry-level role. |
| Recent job change | 1,600 jobs added in July 2026; 165,600 added over the year through July | Shows continued growth across the state, with different results by industry. |
| Information industry | 10,900 fewer jobs, down 4.9% year over year through July 2026 | A caution for information-sector searches; it is not a count of tech postings. |
| Professional and Business Services | 67,000 more jobs, up 3.2% year over year through July 2026 | Points to a broader group of employers that may hire technical and support staff. |
| Statewide openings | 575,000 in June 2025, compared with a 1,096,000 peak in April 2022 | A lagging, all-industry indicator of a cooler market. |
| Openings rate | 3.9% in June 2025, versus 7.6% at the April 2022 peak | Helps put current selectivity in context; it does not isolate technology. |
The June 2025 Texas Workforce Report also recorded 40,000 more openings than hires, with openings exceeding hires every month since September 2024. That suggests opportunities still existed, but it does not tell you how many were junior IT, software, or support jobs, nor whether they were in your metro area. Treat the figures as context, then let current postings determine your plan.

Searching only for “entry-level tech” hides relevant employers that use different titles. Start with two or three role families, then test the requirements in live advertisements. TWC’s 2025 Report on Texas Growth Occupations provides useful long-range context for two families, but its figures are occupation-wide and industry-specific rather than entry-level promises.

| Software developers | 45,657 | 75,319 | 29,662 jobs; 65.0% | $127,598 | Whether a current opening accepts new graduates or requires prior professional experience. |
| Computer user support specialists | 20,701 | 30,726 | 10,025 jobs; 48.4% | $57,270 | Whether a particular help-desk or support posting is entry level, on-site, or shift-based. |
Computer user support and help desk
Search titles such as computer user support specialist, help-desk technician, service-desk analyst, desktop support, technical support representative, and junior systems support. Read the ad for ticketing systems, operating-system troubleshooting, account administration, hardware setup, customer communication, and schedule requirements. A support role can be a practical first technology job, but the employer may still require experience, a certification, or evening and weekend availability.
Software development
Try junior software developer, associate developer, application developer, web developer, QA automation, test engineer, and implementation developer. Look for the languages, frameworks, databases, version-control tools, testing practices, and degree requirements that recur in your local ads. A projection of long-term growth is not proof that every developer posting is junior or open today.
Other technology-adjacent entry points
Include business systems support, implementation, technical customer support, data operations, network operations, cybersecurity support, and quality assurance when the duties match your skills. Employers may place these jobs in finance, health care, government, education, logistics, manufacturing, or professional services rather than in an “information” industry category.

“While this report shows the most in-demand occupations in Texas for the 2022 through 2032 period, it is important to remember that each employer needs a unique combination of technical skills, education, work experience, and even soft skills for each of these jobs at each of their workplaces.”

A Texas-first search process
1. Build a title and keyword map
Write three columns before searching:
- Role names: combine the families above with terms such as junior, associate, trainee, specialist, analyst, support, implementation, or technician.
- Skill terms: include the tools you can demonstrate, such as a specific operating system, scripting language, database, cloud platform, ticketing workflow, testing tool, or networking concept.
- Geography: list your practical commute, nearby workforce areas, and whether you can accept on-site, hybrid, or remote work. Remote jobs can be restricted by the employer’s payroll state or time-zone needs.
Run several combinations rather than assuming one search represents the market. Save useful titles from real ads and add them to the next search.
2. Start with WorkInTexas
WorkInTexas.com is TWC’s online job-matching and workforce-services system. Its public tools include job postings, résumé functions, state applications, and education and training discovery.
- Create or update your profile with a location, work authorization information, education, skills, and realistic availability.
- Search each title family separately. Try both occupation names and employer language from your keyword map.
- Filter by a commute you can sustain. Add a wider radius only after reviewing the number and quality of nearby results.
- Save postings and note closing dates, required documents, schedule, pay information, and the exact skills repeated across ads.
- Return to the site regularly. A single search is a snapshot, not the whole Texas market.
3. Verify the employer’s own career page
Use a public posting to discover an employer, then confirm that the requisition is still open on the employer’s official careers site. Check the closing date, work location, application questions, and whether the requisition number matches. For a state agency or university, follow that organization’s instructions exactly. TWC specifically notes that a résumé does not replace a required State of Texas Application.

4. Get no-cost local assistance
Texas has 28 locally managed workforce development boards that coordinate with TWC and operate Workforce Solutions offices. Job seekers can receive help with finding work and training at no cost. Use the state’s Jobs resources and American Job Center directory to identify the office serving your county or workforce area.
Ask the office what services you qualify for, including résumé review, career assessment, job-search workshops, interviewing practice, supportive services, and training referrals. Eligibility and available programs can vary by location, so ask for the current rules instead of assuming every service is universal.
5. Test demand in your metro area
TWC’s Labor Market and Career Information services include Texas LMI, Texas Labor Analysis, Texas Wages, employment projections, regional profiles, online postings, and Monthly Help Wanted Online. Texas Career Check supports career exploration. Use these tools to compare your county or metro area with the statewide picture and to check whether the occupations you are considering have active local demand.
A statewide projection cannot substitute for counting current postings in your workforce area. Record the date you checked, because postings and wage displays change.

6. Select training only for a demonstrated gap
Start with the requirements that recur in the jobs you actually want. TWC’s State Training Inventory collects Texas provider and program information, with enrollment and graduation data where available. MyTXCareer can connect an occupation to your background and let you request information about local training.
Compare a program against your gap using this checklist:
- Does the curriculum teach the tools named in your target postings?
- What is the total cost, schedule, delivery format, and expected completion time?
- Are you eligible for public funding or other assistance through your local Workforce Solutions office?
- Does the provider publish instructors, course hours, assessments, completion data, and employer connections?
- Can you produce a work sample or credential that an employer can verify?
The public sources establish ways to discover and compare training; they do not establish that any particular paid credential is required. Do not enroll simply because a course promises a job. First identify the missing skill, then price the least expensive credible way to demonstrate it.
7. Track applications and adjust deliberately
Keep a simple spreadsheet or notebook with the role title, employer, location, date found, closing date, required skills, application status, response, and next action. This is an organizational tool, not a guarantee of better hiring results. After several weeks, use the record to see whether your problem is too few local openings, a recurring missing skill, an unsuitable schedule, or weak application evidence.

How to judge whether a posting is genuinely entry level
“Junior” in a title does not define the hiring bar. Read the duties and minimum qualifications before spending time on an application.
| Check | Questions to answer from the ad | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Experience | Does it require years of professional experience, or will internships, projects, labs, volunteer work, or customer-service experience count? | Apply when your evidence addresses the stated requirement; do not assume a “preferred” item is mandatory. |
| Education and certifications | Is a degree required, preferred, or absent? Is a named certification a condition of hire? | Separate true minimums from preferences and verify any license or background-check condition. |
| Tools and duties | Which technologies appear in the first responsibilities and minimum-qualification sections? | Prioritize postings where you can show a concrete example for most core duties. |
| Schedule | Are there rotating shifts, nights, weekends, on-call coverage, or overtime? | Decide before applying whether the schedule fits your circumstances. |
| Location | Is the job fully on-site, hybrid, remote within Texas, or restricted to a particular city? | Confirm the actual worksite and commute; “remote” may still require residency or occasional travel. |
| Pay information | Is a range stated, and are bonuses or differentials separate? | Compare the stated range with local wage data, remembering that occupation-wide medians are not entry-level offers. |
Compare role paths with the same decision framework
Do not choose software development solely because its projected median wage is higher, or support solely because it appears easier to enter. Compare the path you can realistically pursue in your location and time frame.
| Comparison factor | How to measure it |
|---|---|
| Local opportunity | Count current postings in your metro or workforce area and note how recently they were posted. |
| Entry requirements | Record recurring experience, education, background-check, schedule, and location requirements. |
| Skill overlap | List tools that recur across several employers rather than preparing for one ad only. |
| Training burden | Estimate time, tuition, materials, and the opportunity cost of studying instead of applying. |
| Work arrangement | Compare on-site, hybrid, remote, shift, travel, and on-call expectations with your constraints. |
| Local wages | Use TWC wage tools and posted ranges; interpret occupation-wide medians as context, not promises. |
| Evidence you can show | Identify a project, lab, ticket example, script, portfolio item, or customer outcome that demonstrates the work. |
For a training route, add provider transparency, eligibility, curriculum fit, and verifiable outcomes. TWC’s tools can supply data points, but they do not rank the best path for every person.
Make an application credible without paid credentials
Translate experience into technical evidence
On your résumé, lead with the role family you are targeting and the tools you can use. Describe what you did, the environment, and the result. A retail worker can document point-of-sale troubleshooting, device setup, customer explanations, or process improvements. A recent graduate can describe a deployed class project, a tested script, a database schema, or a documented lab. Label school, volunteer, freelance, and personal work honestly; do not present practice as paid employment.
Tailor each application to the minimum qualifications
Mirror the employer’s terminology when it accurately describes your experience. Put the most relevant project or job first, explain gaps briefly, and remove skills you cannot discuss. For government applications, complete every required field in the State of Texas Application rather than attaching a résumé and assuming it substitutes for the form.
Prepare for practical interviews
Expect questions that test troubleshooting, prioritization, communication, and willingness to learn. Practice explaining how you would reproduce a problem, gather information, protect user data, document the fix, and escalate when necessary. For development roles, be ready to walk through your code, tests, trade-offs, and a defect you corrected. Use a few concise examples from work, school, or projects instead of memorized claims.
When the search stalls, diagnose the bottleneck
| Symptom | Likely issue to test | Adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Very few results | Your title, radius, or industry filter is too narrow. | Add adjacent titles, nearby workforce areas, and employers in non-technology industries; then review each duty. |
| Many applications, no screens | Your résumé may not show the recurring tools or minimum qualifications. | Rewrite the top section for one role family, add concrete evidence, and remove unsupported claims. |
| Interviews but no offers | Examples may not demonstrate troubleshooting, communication, or technical depth. | Practice structured answers and ask interviewers which skill the role emphasizes. |
| Jobs require experience you lack | You may be targeting postings above your current level. | Add trainee, support, implementation, QA, contract, internship, and apprenticeship searches; build one relevant work sample. |
| Training costs seem high | You may be assuming a paid program is the only route. | Ask Workforce Solutions about eligibility, compare State Training Inventory options, and first use free labs or projects to test your interest. |
| Commute or schedule is impossible | The role family may be concentrated in a different local market or shift. | Change geography, target employers with compatible schedules, or choose a related role with a feasible arrangement. |
A practical 30-day plan
- Days 1–3: Choose two role families, write your title and skill map, and gather three examples of work you can explain.
- Days 4–7: Create or update WorkInTexas, run separate searches, save 15–20 relevant postings, and mark recurring requirements.
- Week 2: Verify promising requisitions on employer career pages, complete any required state or university application, and contact your local Workforce Solutions office.
- Week 3: Use Texas LMI, Texas Labor Analysis, Texas Wages, regional profiles, and Texas Career Check to compare your target occupations with local conditions. Identify one specific skill gap.
- Week 4: Decide whether that gap needs a course, a public training referral, or a demonstrable project. Submit tailored applications, record outcomes, and revise your title or geography choices based on the evidence in your tracker.
Refresh the plan each month. TWC’s August 2026 dashboard and July 2026 employment release describe a particular point in time, while the statewide openings figures end in June 2025 and the occupation projections cover 2022–2032. Current local postings should decide where you spend your next hour.
