How to Find Deposit Return Points Near You and Check Which Containers They Accept

By TheFinanceBase Team 12 min read

Start with the official deposit-return scheme for the place where the drink was sold and where you plan to return it. Open its “find a return point” map, search by suburb, postcode or current location, and then use the same scheme’s container checker or rules before you leave. Confirm that your chosen point accepts your quantity and provides the refund method you want. A plastic bottle or aluminium can that qualifies in one jurisdiction may be excluded in another.

1. Identify the scheme that applies to your container

Deposit systems are local. Eligibility normally depends on the jurisdiction in which the beverage was sold and the rules of the place where you are trying to return it. Do not rely on the material alone or assume that a container bought across a border will be accepted.

Search the relevant government or scheme-operator website for phrases such as find a return point, collection point map, refund point or deposit return locator. Prefer the official locator over a general map or a recycling app: third-party listings can omit new sites, show closed sites or fail to describe quantity and refund restrictions.

Use the locator in this order

  1. Identify the country, state or territory whose scheme applies. If the container was purchased in another jurisdiction, check whether the return scheme accepts out-of-area packaging.
  2. Open the official locator and enter a suburb, postcode or your device’s current location.
  3. Filter for a point type that suits your load: reverse-vending machine, staffed counter, return centre or depot.
  4. Open the individual listing and check its hours, accepted return method, quantity guidance and operating status.
  5. Save the location and recheck it immediately before travelling if the network is expanding or the locator reports temporary closures.

For New South Wales, Service NSW directs users to the Return and Earn map and the NSW Environment Protection Authority container database. Return and Earn’s own “How to Return” page provides a suburb search. In Ireland, the Re-turn consumer guide explains that an online purchase receipt may contain a QR code and web address leading to the nationwide return-point map. Singapore’s official locator lets users find a Return Right reverse-vending machine and warns that locations can change during deployment.

2. Check every container against the local acceptance rules

Before putting empties in a bag, inspect each one against the scheme’s current checker or eligibility list. The decisive details can include:

  • the scheme’s deposit mark, logo or other local label;
  • a readable barcode or registration in the scheme database;
  • container material, such as plastic, aluminium, steel, glass or liquid paperboard;
  • capacity or size range;
  • the type of beverage, including whether it is alcohol, dairy, juice or a freshly prepared drink; and
  • condition: many schemes require the container to be empty, identifiable and undamaged.

Keep the original label unless the local rules explicitly say it is unnecessary. A machine may need to scan the barcode, identify the shape or read the deposit mark. In Ireland, Re-turn says reverse-vending machines scan container shape as well as barcode, so a barcode that looks valid on its own does not guarantee acceptance.

Jurisdiction and source Examples of containers covered Important exclusions or limits Condition or marking requirement
New South Wales, Australia — Service NSW guidance published 7 April 2026 Eligible examples can include glass, plastic, aluminium, steel and liquid paperboard beverage containers. Wine, spirits, cordial and plain milk containers are excluded from refund eligibility. Container must be empty, uncrushed, unbroken and retain its original label.
Singapore — Beverage Container Return Scheme (BCRS), from 1 April 2026 Prepackaged plastic and metal beverage containers from 150 ml to 3 L, including water, soft drinks, juices, dairy, juice concentrates or cordials and alcohol. Cartons, pouches, glass, containers outside 150 ml–3 L and specified freshly prepared drinks are excluded. Container must carry the BCRS Deposit Mark.
Ireland — Re-turn consumer guide Containers carrying the Re-turn logo can be returned at participating shops and supermarkets. The guide’s eligibility depends on the scheme logo and the container being within the scheme’s accepted range. Return empty and undamaged; machines check shape as well as barcode.

These examples are illustrations of local variation, not a universal rulebook. “Plastic bottle” or “aluminium can” is not enough to establish refund eligibility.

3. Pick a return point that matches your quantity and refund preference

Different points can be appropriate for a kitchen bag of empties, several hundred containers or a commercial-style load. Compare the point’s capacity, service format, refund options and convenience before setting out.

Point type How it works Best fit Refund and practical checks
Reverse-vending machine You feed containers into a self-service machine; it identifies eligible items and issues the point’s available refund. People who want a quick, self-service return and have a moderate household load. Check whether the machine is full, operating and able to provide cash, a voucher, digital credit or another local option.
Staffed counter An attendant receives and verifies the containers at a shop or service desk. Smaller loads or anyone who needs staff assistance. Check counter hours, whether containers must be sorted and which refund methods are offered.
Return or redemption centre A dedicated site handles larger volumes through machines or staffed processing. Several hundred containers or a planned bulk trip. Confirm opening hours, vehicle access and whether the site uses a voucher, electronic transfer, cash or donation.
Depot A bulk-return facility accepts large deliveries under its own handling process. Very large quantities or any amount where the local scheme specifically directs you to a depot. Check booking, unloading and identification requirements before travelling.

New South Wales publishes useful capacity examples, but they are not universal limits: a machine is described as suitable for up to 500 containers, an over-the-counter point for up to 100, a return centre for 500 or more, and a depot for any amount. Return and Earn also states that more than 600 points are available and advertises a 10-cent refund per eligible container; those figures were checked on 13 October 2026 and should be verified on the live page.

Across markets, return-to-retail points, redemption centres and depots can coexist. A cross-region explanation from TOMRA describes these formats, while the exact capacities and payment rules remain local.

4. Confirm hours, status and payment before you leave

A point appearing on a map does not guarantee that it can process your load at the moment you arrive. Check the listing for:

  • opening and closing times, including public-holiday changes;
  • temporary closure notices or machine-out-of-service information;
  • maximum load or whether the point is intended for a particular quantity;
  • parking, public-transport access and any requirement to enter a store;
  • available refund methods, such as cash, voucher, electronic transfer, digital credit or donation; and
  • whether the point accepts mixed containers or asks you to separate them.

Singapore’s locator specifically cautions that locations may change while the Return Right machine network is deployed. The National Environment Agency announced a plan for more than 1,000 machines at launch, with an intended increase to 2,000 within the first year. That is a deployment plan, not a promise that every planned machine is operating when you search.

5. Prepare containers for a successful scan

  1. Empty all liquid from each container. Residual contents can make handling unpleasant and may cause a machine to reject it.
  2. Keep the container recognisable. Do not crush it if the local scheme requires its original shape or a readable barcode.
  3. Leave the original label and deposit mark intact where required. Avoid tearing or covering the barcode.
  4. Separate containers that the checker identifies as outside the scheme so they do not slow the return.
  5. Carry the load in a sturdy reusable bag or tote that you can empty easily. Such a bag is optional; you do not need to buy a special product to claim a refund.

At a machine, follow the on-screen instructions and place containers in one at a time unless the machine explicitly supports bulk feeding. Keep the receipt, voucher or digital confirmation until the refund has been credited. At a staffed point, ask how the containers should be presented and whether the attendant can process the full quantity in one transaction.

6. What to do when a machine rejects a container

Rejection is not proof that the item is unrecyclable. Deposit eligibility and ordinary household recycling are separate questions.

  1. Remove the container and inspect the label, deposit mark, barcode, size and condition.
  2. Try the official container database or eligibility checker for the jurisdiction.
  3. Confirm that the beverage category and material are included; do not infer eligibility from appearance alone.
  4. Record the barcode or take a clear photograph of the mark if the scheme’s support team asks for details.
  5. Ask the point attendant or contact the scheme’s official help channel if the database says it should qualify but the machine still rejects it.

Common causes include a missing local mark, a barcode that is not registered, a container outside the permitted size, an excluded beverage type, a crushed or broken container, or a machine that is temporarily unable to process that format. Keep rejected items separate so you can choose the correct recycling route rather than placing them back into a deposit bag without checking.

7. Jurisdiction examples: how the process differs

New South Wales, Australia

Use the Service NSW direction to the Return and Earn map and the EPA container database. Eligible examples can include glass, plastic, aluminium, steel and liquid paperboard containers, but wine, spirits, cordial and plain milk containers are excluded. Containers must be empty, uncrushed, unbroken and retain their original labels. Search the Return and Earn suburb locator, select a machine, staffed point, centre or depot, and then verify its current details. The published NSW capacity examples are up to 500 containers at a machine, up to 100 over the counter, 500 or more at a centre and any amount at a depot.

Singapore

The BCRS started on 1 April 2026. A qualifying prepackaged plastic or metal beverage container must be 150 ml to 3 L and carry the BCRS Deposit Mark. The listed beverage categories include water, soft drinks, juices, dairy, juice concentrates or cordials and alcohol. Cartons, pouches, glass and specified freshly prepared drinks are excluded. Use the official BCRS container information and Return Right locator, check that the selected machine is operating, and follow its digital-refund process. The deposit is 10 cents per eligible container.

Ireland

Look for the Re-turn logo and return empty, undamaged containers at participating shops and supermarkets. Use the scheme map on the Re-turn website; the consumer guide also describes a QR code and web address that may appear on an online purchase receipt. Because machines scan shape as well as barcode, keep containers intact and labels readable.

8. Plan the trip around your load

Count and sort containers at home when the quantity is more than a handful. A rough count helps you avoid taking a few hundred items to a point intended for small counter transactions. Keep eligible and ineligible packaging in separate bags, and group containers by type only if the local point requests sorting. Never remove labels simply to make sorting easier when the scheme uses the label or barcode for verification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider the whole journey, not just the distance on the map. A farther centre with parking may be quicker for a large load than a nearby shop counter. For a small bag, a return-to-retail point on your normal shopping route may be more convenient. Check whether the listing is inside a store, whether you need to queue at a service desk, and whether the point’s hours differ from the retailer’s general opening hours.

Read the payment instructions before you start. Some locations issue a printed voucher, while others provide cash, electronic transfer, digital credit or donation. If a voucher is produced, check where it can be redeemed and keep it dry and legible. For a digital refund, make sure the phone number, account or app details required by that scheme are ready before scanning containers.

9. Handle unusual or borderline containers carefully

Borderline items deserve a database check rather than a guess. A beverage container can look identical to an eligible one yet fail because it lacks the local deposit mark, falls outside the permitted volume or contains an excluded drink. Imported packaging, promotional multipacks and containers bought before a scheme change are especially worth checking individually. If the checker cannot find the barcode, save a photograph and ask the scheme’s help channel instead of repeatedly feeding the item into a machine.

Do not confuse a retailer’s willingness to take back packaging with a refund entitlement. A shop may collect ordinary recycling or offer a separate take-back service even when the item is outside the deposit scheme. Likewise, a container can be recyclable through household collection while earning no deposit. Use the disposal instructions for the correct stream after confirming its refund status.

10. Avoid the mistakes that waste a trip

  • Searching only a general map: use the scheme’s own locator for current point types and status.
  • Assuming material decides eligibility: check the local mark, barcode, size, drink category and condition.
  • Crushing containers to save space: do this only if the local rules permit it; NSW guidance requires containers to be uncrushed.
  • Taking a bulk load to a small counter: match your quantity to the point’s published guidance.
  • Ignoring the refund method: a point may issue a voucher or digital credit rather than cash.
  • Relying on an old address or opening time: confirm the listing shortly before departure, especially during a network rollout.
  • Confusing recycling with a deposit refund: an excluded container can still belong in a household or local recycling stream even though it earns no deposit.
  • Treating a policy announcement as a live locator: use an operating scheme map for an actual return; a government statement about future policy does not confirm that a nearby point is open.

11. A quick checklist for your next return

  • Identify the applicable country, state or territory scheme.
  • Open its official return-point map and search your suburb, postcode or current location.
  • Check each container in the official eligibility tool or rules.
  • Confirm label or deposit mark, barcode, material, size, beverage type and condition.
  • Count the load and choose a machine, counter, centre or depot that fits your quantity.
  • Verify hours, operating status, access and refund method.
  • Carry containers empty and in the condition the scheme requires.
  • Keep the receipt, voucher or digital confirmation until payment is complete.

Bottom line

The reliable route is always local: official scheme locator first, official container checker second, point-specific status third. Check the mark, barcode, size, beverage and condition for every container, then choose a return format that can handle your quantity and pays the refund in a way you can use. Rules, point types and payment options change by jurisdiction, so never treat another country’s or state’s acceptance list as your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I return bottles near me?

Use the official deposit-return scheme or government website for the jurisdiction where the drink was sold. Search its map by suburb, postcode or current location, then open the individual listing to confirm hours, point type, quantity guidance and refund method. General map apps may be incomplete or outdated.

How do I know whether a bottle or can qualifies?

Check the scheme’s current container database or checker. Look for the required deposit mark or logo, a registered barcode, the permitted material and size, the beverage category and the required condition. Material alone—such as plastic or aluminium—does not establish eligibility.

Can I return a container bought in another state or country?

Do not assume it will qualify. Deposit marks, barcode registrations, beverage categories and refund rules are local. Check the scheme that applies where the container was sold and the scheme operating at the intended return point before travelling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if a reverse-vending machine rejects an eligible-looking container?

Inspect the mark, barcode, size, beverage type and condition, then check the official eligibility database. If the database says the item qualifies, record the barcode or photograph the label and ask the attendant or scheme support channel. A rejection can also reflect a temporary machine problem.

Should I crush bottles before returning them?

Only if the local rules permit it. Some machines need the original shape or an intact barcode. New South Wales guidance, for example, requires eligible containers to be uncrushed and unbroken. When unsure, leave containers intact.

Which return point is best for a large number of containers?

Compare the point’s published capacity and handling process. In New South Wales, the scheme describes machines for up to 500 containers, over-the-counter points for up to 100, centres for 500 or more and depots for any amount. Those are NSW examples, not universal limits, so check your local listing.

Do all return points pay cash?

No. Depending on the jurisdiction and point, the refund may be cash, a voucher, electronic transfer, digital credit or a donation. Confirm the payment method on the listing before you leave, and keep any receipt or voucher until the refund is completed.

Is an excluded container still recyclable?

Possibly. Deposit eligibility and ordinary recycling are separate questions. If the official checker excludes the item, follow your local household-recycling or waste-service instructions rather than assuming it belongs in the deposit return stream.
