Then book when the live fare fits your budget and the available evidence suggests waiting is more likely to hurt than help.
Google’s 2024 analysis found that nonstop flights averaged 25% more than flights with stops. Its 2026 historical analysis found international fares reached a low range roughly 50 to 133 days before departure, with the lowest point around 89 days out. Those are averages across analyzed markets, not promises for your itinerary.

What actually lowers an expensive airfare
Airlines sell seats in changing fare buckets. The cheapest bucket may disappear as seats sell, while a different bucket can appear when demand, inventory or competition changes. You cannot control those variables, but you can control how many combinations you check.
The biggest repeatable levers are:
- Travel dates: shifting departure or return by even one day can expose a different fare bucket.
- Airports: adding nearby departure or arrival airports can reveal cheaper routes.
- Stops: accepting one connection often costs less than insisting on a nonstop flight.
- Trip structure: an open-jaw itinerary, separate tickets or a different route may reduce the ticket price, but can add risk.
- Timing: historical ranges can inform your decision, but no universal booking-day rule guarantees a lower fare.
- Total cost: baggage, seats, ground transfers, overnight stays and booking fees can erase a headline saving.
The goal is not to find the lowest number displayed in a search result. It is to find the lowest usable trip cost under constraints you can realistically accept.

Step 1: Define the constraints that matter
Before searching, separate firm requirements from preferences. This prevents a nominally cheap itinerary from becoming unusable.
Mark non-negotiables
- Latest acceptable arrival time and earliest acceptable departure time
- Maximum number of stops and maximum total travel time
- Whether a checked bag, carry-on or seat assignment is required
- Airports you cannot reasonably reach by ground transport
- Whether separate tickets are acceptable
- Whether the ticket must be changeable or refundable
- Any visa, transit or overnight-airport limitations
Every preference you relax expands the set of fares you can see. For example, allowing a Tuesday departure instead of only Friday, or accepting one stop instead of requiring a nonstop, may produce more savings than waiting for a particular day of the week to book.
Set a real budget
Use a ceiling for the complete trip segment you are pricing, not just the base fare. Decide in advance how much extra travel time, ground transport or inconvenience is worth a saving. A $40 ticket reduction is not a saving if it requires a $65 airport transfer or an overnight hotel.

Step 2: Search a date range before choosing a flight
Start with a broad calendar search rather than entering one departure date and one return date.
Use the date grid and price graph
- Enter your origin and destination in Google Flights.
- Open the Dates or date-grid view to compare nearby departure and return combinations.
- Open the Price graph to see how fares move across a wider span.
- Check several trip lengths if your schedule allows it; a one-day change in the return can materially alter the total.
- Record the cheapest acceptable combinations and then inspect their conditions.
Do not treat the calendar’s lowest cell as automatically best. Check whether it involves a long layover, a different airport, an overnight arrival or a fare that excludes the bag you need.
Use Explore when the destination is flexible
If you are choosing among destinations, use the Explore map with a date range or flexible duration. This can show whether a nearby city or an alternate region fits your budget better. Price the onward train, bus or rental-car trip before deciding that the map result is cheaper.

Track “Any dates” when dates are flexible
Google Flights can track a route for specific dates or track Any dates when your schedule is open. An alert is useful for noticing a meaningful change, but it is not a guarantee that the next notification will be the lowest price available.
Step 3: Add nearby airports and alternative routes
Airport choice can change the fare more than the booking day. Search the main airport plus realistic alternatives on both ends of the trip.
Calculate the airport switch correctly
For each alternative, add:
- Train, bus, rideshare, parking or fuel costs
- Travel time and the value of that time
- Possible hotel costs for an early departure or late arrival
- Extra baggage or seat fees on the alternate itinerary
- A safety margin for traffic, security and airport transfer delays
An airport 90 minutes away may be worthwhile for a large fare difference, but not for a small saving that creates a fragile connection to your departure.
Compare nonstop, one-stop and longer-stop itineraries
Google’s 2024 analysis found nonstop flights averaged 25% more than flights with stops. That does not mean every connection is worth accepting. Compare the fare reduction with the added hours, missed-connection exposure, meal costs and the likelihood that you will need a hotel.

Allow a generous buffer when moving between airports or tickets. A self-transfer is not equivalent to a protected connection merely because the search page displays the segments together.
Step 4: Use price signals without treating them as promises
Google Flights may display messages such as “prices are unlikely to drop,” “prices are less than usual,” or “prices are likely to increase.” These messages are based on historical patterns and prediction models. Google also states that predictions can be wrong.

How to act on an alert
- Confirm that the fare covers the dates, airports, bags and connection standard you actually need.
- Compare the current fare with your predefined budget and with the best acceptable alternatives in the date grid.
- If the tool says prices are unlikely to drop and the fare is acceptable, book rather than waiting for a perfect low.
- If the fare is high and your dates are flexible, set a tracking alert and continue checking alternate dates and airports.
- Reassess when your departure date enters the historical low range, but do not wait solely because a calendar rule says you should.
Waiting is a risk decision. You are trading the possibility of a lower fare against the possibility that the current fare bucket disappears.
Step 5: Understand the timing evidence
International booking range
Google’s 2026 historical analysis placed the international low-price range around 50 to 133 days before departure, with a low point near 89 days. The analysis aggregates markets and does not predict the price of a specific route, season, airline or event. A holiday week, limited-service route or sudden capacity change can behave differently.
Use the range as a monitoring window, not as an instruction to buy exactly on day 89. If a satisfactory fare appears earlier, the value of certainty may outweigh a speculative wait. If the fare is unacceptable, continue monitoring while preserving flexibility.
Booking weekday folklore
The same 2026 analysis found Wednesday fares were only about 1.4% cheaper than Sunday fares. That difference is small enough that date-of-travel flexibility usually matters more than choosing a particular day to click “buy.” A cheap Tuesday flight booked on Sunday is generally more useful than an expensive Friday flight booked on a supposed bargain weekday.
What has not been established
There is no reliable evidence here that incognito mode, deleting cookies or repeatedly searching the same route lowers the fare. Do not delay a good itinerary because of those tactics, and do not assume a private browser creates a discount.
Step 6: Inspect the Cheapest tab instead of trusting the headline
Google Flights’ Cheapest tab can surface options that are not equivalent to the standard results. It may include longer layovers, self-transfers, separate tickets or third-party booking sites.

Check these items before selecting a result
- Whether all segments are on one ticket or split into separate bookings
- Whether you must change airports during the connection
- Whether checked bags must be collected and rechecked
- Whether the seller, rather than the operating airline, handles changes and refunds
- Whether the layover requires an overnight stay
- Whether the fare includes a carry-on, checked bag or seat assignment
- Whether the itinerary leaves enough time for immigration, security and boarding
A third-party seller may show the lower price, but support can be slower or less direct when a schedule changes. The airline displayed as the seller may not operate the flight, so identify both the seller and the operating carrier.

Open the same itinerary on the operating airline’s website when possible and compare the final payment screen, not the initial search result.

For flights advertised in the United States, the Department of Transportation requires the advertised airfare to include applicable government taxes, fees and mandatory carrier-imposed surcharges. Optional items such as bags and seats may still be added later, so compare the complete checkout total and conditions.

Separate tickets can be cheaper, but they transfer connection risk to you. Consider one only when all of the following are true:
- The saving remains substantial after bags, airport transfers, meals and possible lodging.
- You can tolerate buying a replacement ticket if the first flight is delayed.
- You have enough time to collect bags, clear formalities and check in again.
- The destination airport and terminal arrangement are practical.
- The booking terms and cancellation exposure are clear.
A same-ticket connection normally gives the ticketing airline a defined obligation to handle a disruption under its applicable rules. A self-transfer does not create the same protection merely because both flights appeared in one search.

U.S. booking protections to know
The Department of Transportation explains that airlines must either hold a reservation for 24 hours without payment or provide a refund when a ticket is purchased at least seven days before departure, subject to the rule’s conditions. The requirement applies to qualifying bookings and does not mean every third-party arrangement has identical cancellation handling. Read the seller’s terms and confirm which entity took payment.

The 24-hour rule is not a substitute for checking the fare before purchase. It generally does not turn a restrictive ticket into a freely changeable ticket after the applicable window, and separate seller policies can affect how you request a refund.
Decision framework: book now, keep watching or change the trip
Book now when
- The total cost fits your budget after bags, seats and ground transport.
- The route satisfies your non-negotiable timing and connection limits.
- The fare is marked as less than usual or unlikely to drop, and you would be comfortable paying it if it rose tomorrow.
- The itinerary is for a high-demand period, limited route or event where inventory may disappear quickly.
Keep watching when
- Your dates and airports are flexible and the current fare is materially above your ceiling.
- You are outside the broad historical monitoring range and have time to observe changes.
- An alert is active and you can accept the risk of a higher fare later.
Change the trip design when
- A nearby airport or one-stop route produces a meaningful saving after all extras.
- A flexible destination delivers better value than forcing one expensive city.
- The only low fare requires a self-transfer or overnight stay that violates your practical limits.
Common expensive mistakes
Optimizing only the displayed fare
The cheapest search result may become more expensive after baggage, seats, transfers and overnight costs. Always compare the door-to-door total.
Waiting for a mythical best booking day
The 1.4% Wednesday-versus-Sunday difference in Google’s 2026 analysis is too small to outweigh a favorable travel date or a disappearing fare bucket.

A long layover, airport change or separate ticket can turn a small saving into a missed flight or a replacement-ticket bill.
Assuming a price prediction is certain
Google’s messages are probability signals, not guarantees. Use them with your budget, route flexibility and tolerance for risk.
Choosing a seller without checking support
Confirm who issues the ticket, who handles changes and whether the operating airline can see the reservation. Save the confirmation number and fare rules immediately after purchase.
A practical checklist before payment
- Confirm the exact dates, airports and passenger names.
- Compare at least one nearby-airport and one connecting alternative when practical.
- Calculate bags, seats, transfers, lodging and payment fees.
- Check whether the itinerary is one ticket, a self-transfer or separate tickets.
- Read change, cancellation and refund terms.
- Identify the seller and operating airline.
- Verify the final total at checkout.
- Save the receipt, fare conditions, ticket number and alert details.
Bottom line
Cheap flights during expensive periods are found by widening the search and pricing the whole journey. Start with flexible dates, nearby airports and connecting routes; use alerts and historical timing as guidance; scrutinize the Cheapest tab; and book when the complete itinerary is acceptable. There is no dependable incognito trick or universal best booking weekday that replaces a sound comparison.
