The reliable process is to search, inspect the payment-method and freshness fields, contact the café, and arrive with a funded wallet plus a backup payment method.
Use a café directory, then verify the café directly
Search the area in a Bitcoin-focused map rather than relying on a general web search. Specialist directories expose payment-method and verification details that a normal business profile often omits. The most useful starting points are MappingBitcoin’s café category and BTC Map. Search your city, neighborhood, or travel destination, then narrow the results to cafés or food venues.

When a directory offers a Lightning filter, turn it on before you choose a venue. Open each surviving listing and read the payment-method field. “Bitcoin” can mean an on-chain transaction, Lightning, or both; those are different ways to pay. A listing that says only “on-chain” does not establish that the café accepts Lightning, and a Lightning label does not prove that an on-chain transaction will work.

Finally, use the café’s own current phone number, website, or social account to confirm acceptance, opening hours, and any minimum purchase or operational restriction. Directory data can lag behind a policy change. The warning from We Are Bitcoin’s 2025 guide is worth treating literally: “The reason people arrive at a café that stopped accepting bitcoin in 2022 is that they skipped the rest.”

Which directories are useful for café searches?
No directory has a complete, permanent inventory. They use different geographic coverage, data sources, and definitions of “verified.” The figures below are directory snapshots, not a guarantee that every listed business is open or still accepts Bitcoin.

The MappingBitcoin and Bitcoin Map totals should not be added together. They are separate directories with different inclusion rules, and neither count establishes that every venue supports Lightning.
Step-by-step: find a café for a specific trip
1. Define the area and the payment rail
Decide whether you need a café inside a walkable neighborhood, near an airport or station, or anywhere in the wider city. Also decide whether you will pay with Lightning, an on-chain transaction, or either. This prevents a search result that is geographically convenient but technically unusable.
2. Search MappingBitcoin or BTC Map
- Open MappingBitcoin’s café category or BTC Map.
- Enter the city, postal area, landmark, or travel route.
- Filter the results to cafés or food venues rather than viewing every merchant type.
- Open several nearby listings instead of selecting the first pin; compare their payment fields, hours, and notes.
3. Apply a Lightning or on-chain filter when available
Bitcoin Cities provides Café, Lightning, and on-chain filters. BTC Accepted exposes separate on-chain and Lightning fields. On directories without a dedicated filter, read the listing itself and look for an explicit method label. Treat an undifferentiated “Bitcoin accepted” badge as incomplete information.
4. Read the complete listing
Check the business name, address, opening hours, payment method, verification label, last check-in or update, and any owner notes. A listing marked owner-verified is stronger evidence than an imported record, while a recent community check-in can be useful local evidence. Neither replaces confirmation from the café.

5. Confirm through a current business channel
Call the number shown on the café’s own website or listing, or send a direct message through its active social account. Ask a precise question: “Can I pay with Bitcoin Lightning at the counter today?” If you intend to pay on-chain, ask that method separately. Also confirm that the location and hours match the day and time of your visit.
6. Save a fallback
Record a second nearby café and keep a conventional payment method. A closed venue, a changed policy, a weak mobile connection, or a wallet problem can make a single planned stop fail even when the listing was accurate when created.

On-chain Bitcoin and Lightning are not the same
On-chain payment
An on-chain payment is recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain. The café may display a Bitcoin address or QR code for a transaction. Depending on the café’s point-of-sale process, staff may wait for a network indication or use their own risk policy before treating the sale as complete. The directory label tells you that this rail is reported; it does not describe the café’s confirmation policy.
Lightning payment
Lightning payments use a Lightning invoice, normally presented as a QR code or an invoice string. Your wallet must support Lightning and have spendable balance on that network. A café can accept Lightning while not accepting on-chain payments at the same till, or it can support both. Look for an explicit Lightning field rather than inferring support from a generic Bitcoin logo.
Why the distinction matters at the counter
- A Lightning-only café may reject an on-chain address even though it advertises Bitcoin.
- An on-chain-only café may not know how to present or settle a Lightning invoice.
- A wallet funded only for one rail cannot reliably pay the other.
- The QR code format is not enough evidence by itself; ask which rail the code represents if the wallet does not identify it clearly.
We Are Bitcoin’s 2025 preparation guidance is to carry “A wallet with a balance you can spend, and the ability to pay both on-chain and over Lightning if possible.” That is travel preparation, not a claim that every café supports both methods.

How to judge whether a listing is still current
Use the strongest available signals first
- Owner confirmation: A record explicitly marked owner-verified is a useful starting signal.
- Recent check-in: Bitcoin Cities’ checked-in and recency filters help surface places someone has observed recently.
- Community confirmation: A recent contributor note can reveal a changed terminal, a temporary suspension, or a preferred payment rail.
- Imported data: CryptoPayMap identifies imported records; treat these as leads until the café confirms them.
- Business-channel confirmation: A current reply or phone confirmation from the café is the decisive check for your visit.
Look for contradictions
Be cautious when the address, name, hours, or payment fields disagree between directories. A café that moved may retain an old map pin. A listing can show a recent check-in while the café has since replaced its payment terminal. If one directory says Lightning and another says on-chain only, ask the café which option is working now and whether the answer applies to the specific branch.

Directory totals, individual acceptance, opening hours, and verification states are volatile. Reopen the record on the day of travel, then contact the café immediately before you leave if the visit is important. The directory information available for this guide was checked on October 19, 2026; counts and statuses should be treated as time-sensitive rather than permanent.
Prepare your wallet before you leave
- Install and update the wallet: Complete setup and any required backup before arriving at the café, not while a queue is waiting.
- Fund the correct rail: Keep spendable Lightning balance if the venue is Lightning-only. Keep on-chain funds if that is the stated method. If your wallet separates balances, verify both screens.
- Test the receive and send flow: Know where the scan button is, how to paste an invoice, and how to approve a payment. A small test with a trusted person can expose account or network issues before the trip.
- Keep the recovery information safe: Do not show a seed phrase or private key to café staff, a directory operator, or anyone offering “payment help.”
- Plan for connectivity: A Lightning payment normally requires the wallet to communicate with its service or node. Have mobile data or dependable Wi-Fi and enough battery to display a QR code.
- Bring a fallback: Carry another payment method and enough funds for the purchase if the café’s terminal or your wallet is unavailable.
Do not send funds to an address or invoice supplied through an unsolicited message claiming to represent the café. Ask staff to generate the invoice on the café’s own point-of-sale device or official wallet.
What to do at the café
- Tell the cashier which method you intend to use: Lightning or on-chain.
- Confirm the amount and currency before scanning. If the displayed amount is unexpected, stop and ask staff to regenerate it.
- For Lightning, scan the invoice with your Lightning-enabled wallet and check the destination and amount shown by the wallet before approving.
- For on-chain, scan or enter the café’s address, verify the amount, and follow the café’s instructions about when the order is considered paid.
- Show the successful-payment screen only after the wallet reports completion. Do not assume that a QR scan alone sent money.
- Keep the receipt or transaction reference until the order is complete and any refund question is settled.
If the café says payment has not arrived, do not immediately pay a second time. First check your wallet’s transaction status and ask staff to compare the invoice or address. A duplicated payment can be harder to reverse than a delayed one.
Troubleshooting common failures
The listing says Lightning, but staff do not recognize it
Show the listing’s payment note, but do not argue that it proves current acceptance. Ask whether the branch changed its policy or whether another register supports Lightning. If staff cannot confirm, use the backup venue or payment method.

The invoice expired
Ask the cashier to create a new invoice. Do not reuse an old screenshot or manually alter an invoice string. Confirm the amount again before approving.
Your wallet shows no spendable balance
Stop before ordering. A balance on another network, an unconfirmed transfer, or funds locked in a channel may not be immediately spendable. Use the backup method rather than improvising a transfer under pressure.
The QR code will not scan
Increase screen brightness, ask for a larger code, or request the invoice as text if the café can provide it. Ensure your wallet is in Lightning mode when scanning a Lightning invoice. If the code is an on-chain address, switch to the wallet’s on-chain send screen.
The map pin is wrong or the business is closed
Report the discrepancy through the directory’s available contribution tools if you can do so safely, but solve your immediate travel problem with the saved alternative. A correction benefits later travelers; it does not make the current listing reliable.

Start with BTC Map or MappingBitcoin, compare several nearby listings, and prioritize a venue with a recent check-in or owner-verification label. Call if the payment method is essential to the outing.

Use MappingBitcoin’s country and city coverage to build a shortlist, then verify each branch through its own channel. The directory reported 1,504 verified cafés across 79 countries in a 2026 crawl, but that scale does not remove the need for a local confirmation.
Lightning-only traveler
Use Bitcoin Cities’ Lightning filter or a directory with a distinct Lightning field, such as BTC Accepted. Exclude records that mention only on-chain Bitcoin, and ask the café to confirm Lightning specifically.
Researching several cities
Keep a simple list with the city, address, rail accepted, verification or recency signal, date of your confirmation, and a backup venue. This avoids confusing a confirmed café in one city with an unverified pin in another.
How much confidence should you place in directory counts?
Counts describe the directory’s own database at a particular time. MappingBitcoin reported 1,504 verified cafés in 79 countries in a 2026 crawl. Bitcoin Map reported 157 Bitcoin-accepting businesses in 36 countries and 139 cities in a separate 2026 crawl. The different totals reflect different inclusion rules, coverage, and labels; they are not a market-size estimate and cannot be combined.
BTC Map states that it uses OpenStreetMap tags and that its apps and underlying data are free and open-source. That makes it useful as an underlying map, but open data can still be stale. BTC Accepted explicitly warns that its data may not be up to date. Read those qualifications alongside every map result.
Privacy and payment-safety checks
- Use only the café’s official contact details, not a number posted in an unverified comment.
- Verify the merchant name and amount in your wallet before approving.
- Never disclose a seed phrase, private key, password, or wallet recovery code to obtain a discount or “activate” a payment.
- Keep screenshots and transaction references private; they can reveal balances or identifying information.
- If a stranger redirects you to a different address or invoice, stop and ask the cashier to generate a new one.
A practical pre-visit checklist
- Venue appears in a café or food-venue category.
- Lightning, on-chain, or both are stated explicitly.
- Address and opening hours match the café’s own current information.
- Verification, check-in, or recency information has been reviewed.
- The café has confirmed the intended payment rail if the visit matters.
- Your wallet is updated, funded on the correct rail, and usable offline only to the extent your setup permits.
- Your phone is charged and connected, and you have a backup payment method.
- A second nearby venue is saved in case the first listing is stale.
Bottom line for finding a working Bitcoin café
Use MappingBitcoin or BTC Map to discover candidates, use filters and payment fields to separate Lightning from on-chain Bitcoin, and use recency or verification signals to rank the results. Then confirm with the café itself on the day and arrive with a funded wallet that matches the stated rail. That extra call is what turns a map pin into a realistic plan.
