How to Find and Reduce the Biggest Expenses in Your Monthly Budget

The biggest expenses in your budget are the categories that consume the most dollars in your own records—not necessarily the categories that are largest for an average household. To find them, collect a complete month of income and spending, group transactions into consistent categories, rank those categories by dollars, and then test reductions where you have enough control to make a realistic change.

National data can help you decide where to look first. U.S. consumer units spent the largest shares on housing and transportation in 2024, but your ranking may be different because of rent, mortgage terms, commuting distance, health needs, family size, debt, childcare, or irregular income. Use averages as context, never as a required spending formula.

What counts as a “big” monthly expense?

A big expense is any category that takes a substantial amount of your available income or dominates your discretionary cash flow. Rank categories by actual dollars before judging whether they are excessive. A $900 recurring bill may deserve more attention than several $20 subscriptions, even if the smaller charges feel easier to cancel.

Include both bills and variable purchases. Housing might include rent or a mortgage payment, property taxes, insurance, utilities, and required fees. Transportation can include a car payment, fuel, insurance, maintenance, parking, public transit, and rides. Food includes groceries and meals purchased away from home. Also include debt payments, childcare, healthcare, insurance, savings contributions, taxes, and annual bills converted into monthly planning amounts.

Separate spending that is required or difficult to change from spending you can adjust quickly. A large category is a priority for investigation, not proof that you should cut it. Any change has to fit your housing, work, caregiving, health, safety, and location constraints.

What U.S. spending averages suggest—and what they do not

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) published Consumer Expenditure Survey results in 2026 covering 2024 spending by “consumer units.” That term includes financially independent families and individuals, including people who share major expenses. These are population averages, not recommended targets or predictions for your household.

Category Share of total spending Average annual amount Average monthly amount where reported
Housing 33.4% $26,266 $2,189
Transportation 17.0% $13,318 $1,110
Food 12.9% $10,169 $847
Personal insurance and pensions 12.5% $9,797 Not stated
Healthcare 7.9% $6,197 Not stated

Housing and transportation together represented more than half of average U.S. spending in the cited 2024 data. Food averaged $10,169 annually, including $6,224 for food at home and $3,945 for food away from home, such as restaurant, delivery, and takeout meals. The average consumer unit spent $78,535 during 2024; dividing that annual figure by 12 gives approximately $6,545 per month as a mathematical average, not a budget recommendation.

The BLS summary identified housing as the only major expenditure component with a statistically significant increase from 2023 to 2024. That finding does not mean every category rose at the same rate or that your expenses followed the national pattern.

Step 1: Gather records for a complete picture

Start with evidence rather than memory. A budget built from remembered purchases usually misses irregular bills, cash spending, annual renewals, and automatic payments.

  • Pay stubs, benefit statements, and records of other income.
  • Rent or mortgage statements, utility bills, insurance invoices, loan statements, and subscription renewals.
  • Bank and credit-card statements covering at least the most recent full month; several months is better for expenses that fluctuate.
  • Receipts, cash-withdrawal notes, digital-wallet history, and transaction records from payment apps.
  • Annual or irregular costs such as property taxes, vehicle registration, gifts, school expenses, repairs, and travel.

Mark refunds, reimbursements, transfers between your own accounts, and credit-card payments so they are not counted as spending twice. If a transaction is unclear, investigate it before assigning a category.

Convert irregular costs into a monthly planning amount

For an annual bill, divide the expected yearly amount by 12 and set that amount aside each month. For example, a $1,200 annual insurance premium becomes a $100 monthly planning amount. This is a budgeting convention that smooths cash flow; it is not an official rule that the bill is actually charged monthly. If the amount is uncertain, record the estimate and update it when you receive the bill.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Calculate monthly income realistically

List take-home pay and other income you can reasonably expect to use for expenses. Do not count borrowed money as income. For income that arrives weekly, every two weeks, seasonally, or irregularly, Consumer.gov advises totaling the prior year’s income and dividing by 12 to estimate a monthly amount. Label that number as an estimate and use a conservative figure when income varies sharply.

Compare monthly income with total planned outgo before deciding what to cut. If planned expenses exceed income, you need a sequence of decisions: reduce or delay adjustable costs, renegotiate or replace large commitments where feasible, increase reliable income, or use savings only with a clear plan. If income exceeds expenses, assign the remainder deliberately; Consumer.gov says savings can be included as a budget expense rather than treated as whatever happens to be left.

Step 3: Use consistent categories and rank them

Choose categories that are detailed enough to reveal decisions but not so detailed that tracking becomes impossible. A practical starting set is housing, utilities, transportation, food at home, food away from home, healthcare, insurance, debt payments, childcare, personal care, household goods, entertainment, and savings.

  1. Add every transaction to one primary category. If a receipt combines groceries and household supplies, split it only if that distinction will affect a decision; otherwise use a consistent combined category.
  2. Add fixed bills, variable purchases, and monthly portions of annual costs within each category.
  3. Calculate each category’s total for the month.
  4. Sort categories from highest dollar amount to lowest.
  5. Calculate each category as a share of take-home income if that percentage helps you understand pressure on cash flow. Treat the result as a description of your situation, not a universal target.

Your ranked list is the answer to “What are my biggest monthly expenses?” It may show housing first, but it could instead show childcare, medical costs, debt, or transportation. The Federal Reserve’s 2024 household survey illustrates why averages can miss important realities: just over half of parents who used paid childcare spent at least 50% as much on childcare as on housing.

Step 4: Separate costs you can change from costs you cannot quickly change

For each of your top categories, write down the portion that is constrained and the portion that is adjustable. A mortgage contract, required medication, or childcare needed to keep a job may have little short-term flexibility. Within the same category, however, some components may be more responsive: an insurance renewal, optional service tier, meal purchased away from home, parking choice, or timing of a nonessential purchase.

Decision question What to examine Why it matters
Potential dollar impact How many dollars the category actually consumed in your records A modest percentage change in a large category can matter more than eliminating a tiny charge.
Control and feasibility Whether the cost is contractual, required, flexible, or dependent on work, health, caregiving, or location A theoretical reduction is not useful if you cannot safely or realistically implement it.
Upfront cost and time Fees, moving costs, replacement purchases, research time, or setup work Compare net effects rather than quoting a gross reduction that requires expensive preparation.
Reliability Whether the reduction is a known bill change or an uncertain future estimate Build the next month’s plan around dependable changes and label estimates clearly.

Where to investigate the largest categories

Housing

Housing was the largest average U.S. expenditure category in the BLS 2024 data, at $26,266 annually or $2,189 monthly. For your household, inspect the full housing cost rather than rent or mortgage alone: utilities, insurance, taxes, association charges, maintenance, parking, and required repairs can materially change the ranking.

Possible investigations include comparing renewal terms, checking whether a different plan or provider is available for utilities, evaluating transportation and moving costs before changing location, and deciding whether unused space or optional services can be changed. A move can involve deposits, closing costs, higher commuting expenses, or disruption, so calculate the total first. Do not assume a cheaper advertised rent produces a lower monthly cost without including these related expenses.

Transportation

Transportation averaged $13,318 annually or $1,110 monthly in the cited BLS data. Add the costs that are easy to overlook: loan or lease payments, fuel, insurance, maintenance, registration, parking, tolls, public transit, and occasional repairs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review whether the largest component is a fixed commitment or a flexible choice. Changing a vehicle, refinancing, altering insurance coverage, combining trips, using transit, or changing parking may have different upfront costs and reliability. Avoid dropping required insurance or maintenance without understanding legal, safety, and financial consequences.

Food

Average food spending was $10,169 annually or $847 monthly, split between $6,224 for food at home and $3,945 for food away from home. Your records should distinguish groceries from restaurant, delivery, and takeout spending because the decisions are different.

Look for patterns rather than blaming individual purchases: frequent delivery fees, convenience meals during workdays, unused groceries, or shopping trips made without a plan. A realistic change might involve planning a limited number of meals, using ingredients before they spoil, changing delivery frequency, or setting a weekly amount for meals away from home. The right option depends on time, health, household size, and access to stores.

Insurance, pensions, and healthcare

Personal insurance and pensions represented 12.5% of average spending, or $9,797 annually, while healthcare represented 7.9%, or $6,197. These categories often combine essential protection with choices that vary by employer, plan, age, health, and eligibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At renewal, compare premiums, deductibles, out-of-pocket limits, and exclusions rather than choosing on premium alone. For healthcare, review bills for errors, use benefits you are already paying for, and ask providers about available payment arrangements when appropriate. Do not skip prescribed care or essential coverage as a short-term budgeting tactic.

Childcare and other household-specific priorities

Childcare can outrank national averages for families who use it. The Federal Reserve reported that just over half of parents using paid childcare spent at least half as much on childcare as on housing. That statistic describes surveyed parents in 2024; it is not a benchmark for what childcare should cost.

Include childcare, school expenses, eldercare, disability-related costs, and support for relatives in your own ranking. Feasible changes may involve scheduling, employer benefits, tax treatment, or shared arrangements, but each option has quality, safety, legal, and work-availability constraints.

Step 5: Choose one manageable change and calculate its real effect

Do not attempt to redesign every category at once. Select a change using four tests:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Material: It affects a category large enough to change your monthly cash flow.
  • Controllable: You can implement it without violating a contract, risking health or safety, or removing a necessary work or caregiving arrangement.
  • Measurable: You can identify the bill, transaction type, or amount that will show whether it worked.
  • Sustainable: The time, effort, and inconvenience are acceptable for more than one week.

Write the expected change in dollars, its start date, any one-time cost, and the condition that would make you reverse it. For example, if changing a service plan costs a $40 fee and lowers the bill by $15 per month, the first month’s net reduction is negative $25; the change reaches break-even after the fee has been recovered. This calculation prevents a gross monthly figure from hiding upfront costs.

Step 6: Track the next month and compare actual results

Consumer.gov describes a budget as a plan written down to decide how money will be spent each month. Put the plan in writing before the month begins, then record spending as it happens. A notebook can organize income, bills, and daily spending, but the notebook itself does not reduce expenses; the decisions based on the records do.

  1. Enter planned amounts for each category at the beginning of the month.
  2. Record transactions promptly, including cash and irregular bills.
  3. Keep a short note when spending differs from the plan: emergency, forgotten annual bill, social event, convenience, or price change.
  4. At month-end, compare planned, actual, and variance amounts for every major category.
  5. Carry the information into the following month. Adjust the plan for known changes and choose the next single experiment.

Do not treat one unusually high or low month as a permanent pattern. Compare several months when a category is seasonal, such as heating, school costs, travel, or vehicle repairs.

How current price pressure should influence your review

The Federal Reserve’s 2024 Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking found that 79% of adults said they had adjusted their behavior in response to higher prices during the prior year, most commonly by changing spending. The same report found that 51% said they spent less than their income in the month before the survey, up from 48% in 2023.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These findings show that many households are already adapting; they do not identify a particular cut that will work for you. When prices change, update the dollar amounts in your records instead of assuming last year’s plan still fits. Distinguish a price increase from a change in quantity or frequency so you know whether to renegotiate, substitute, or reduce use.

Common mistakes that make expense-cutting plans fail

  • Using national percentages as quotas: A household can legitimately spend more or less than an average because its circumstances differ.
  • Ignoring irregular expenses: Annual bills then appear as emergencies and disrupt the following month.
  • Counting transfers as spending: Moving money between your own accounts or paying a credit-card balance can duplicate outgo.
  • Targeting only small, visible purchases: Several minor cancellations may not offset a large fixed commitment.
  • Ignoring trade-offs: A cheaper option may require fees, extra travel, time, lower reliability, or a health and safety compromise.
  • Making an unrealistic plan: A budget that leaves no room for necessary or enjoyable spending is difficult to maintain.
  • Failing to review: A plan is useful only when actual results feed the next month’s decisions.

A repeatable monthly audit

Use this short checklist at the end of each month:

  • Did I include every account, card, cash purchase, and annual bill?
  • Did I use the same category definitions as last month?
  • What are my five largest categories by dollars?
  • Which part of each category is fixed, required, or constrained?
  • Which part is adjustable without unacceptable cost or risk?
  • What upfront cost, time requirement, or uncertainty accompanies the proposed change?
  • What amount will I plan for next month, and how will I measure it?
  • Will any remaining money go toward savings or another clearly assigned purpose?

Repeat the audit monthly until your categories and transaction records are stable, then continue reviewing whenever income, housing, transportation, health, family, or prices change.
