The reliable way to retrieve an old online order is to sign in to the retailer account used at checkout, open Orders, Purchases, or Purchase History, select the transaction, and use its receipt, invoice, order-summary, print, or download option. If it is missing, search the confirmation email and check other accounts or guest checkout. The exact document and menu names vary by retailer, purchase type, and country.
What you may be able to download
Retailers do not use receipt, proof of purchase, order summary, and tax invoice as interchangeable terms. An order page may provide one of these documents, several of them, or only a screen that can be printed.

Receipt or proof of purchase
A receipt normally confirms that a transaction was placed and shows details such as the order number, items, prices, delivery charges, discounts, payment method, and order date. It is often sufficient for a return, warranty conversation, or personal record, but whether it meets an employer’s or tax authority’s documentation rules depends on the situation.
Order summary
An order summary is a record of what was ordered and the amount charged. It may be available even when a formal invoice is not. Amazon’s UK help instructions, for example, cover printing or downloading an invoice or an order summary; the choice shown can depend on the order and seller.

Invoice and tax invoice
An invoice is a more formal billing document. A tax invoice may need specific seller, buyer, tax-registration, rate, or jurisdiction information. Do not assume that an ordinary receipt or order summary qualifies. Etsy states that invoice availability and the steps to view one vary by location and by whether the purchase is physical or digital. In some cases, Etsy directs buyers to contact the seller for a tax invoice.
General method: retrieve an individual order
- Identify the account used at checkout. Start with the email address, phone number, or login that placed the order. A different account can make a genuine purchase appear absent.
- Sign in to the retailer’s website or app. Use the retailer where you actually bought the item, not a payment service or delivery app unless that service was the seller of record.
- Open the order-history area. Common labels are Orders, Purchases, Purchase History, and My Orders. The wording and location can change between a website and an app.
- Locate the transaction. Use any available search box, date filter, order-status filter, or year selector. If no filter exists, work through the order list using the purchase date, item name, seller, or amount shown in your payment record.
- Open the order itself. Documentation controls are usually on the individual order page rather than on the list of orders.
- Choose the available document action. Look for Receipt, Invoice, Order summary, View details, Print, or Download. A print command can create a PDF: select the browser or device’s “Save as PDF” destination instead of a physical printer.
- Check the saved file. Confirm that the PDF or printout includes the order number, transaction date, seller, items, totals, and any information your return, reimbursement, warranty, bookkeeping, or tax process requires.
- Store it with a useful filename. A pattern such as
2024-11-03_Retailer_Order-123456_Invoice.pdfmakes later retrieval easier. Keep the original email as well when it contains information absent from the order page.
Retailer interfaces change, so these labels are examples rather than a universal path. If the order page offers only a view or print control, save that page as a PDF and retain the original transaction email.
When an order is missing
An absent order usually reflects an account or checkout mismatch rather than a deleted purchase. Work through these checks before requesting support.

- Sign out and try other email addresses you use for shopping.
- Check whether you used a social-login account, a phone-number login, or a separate marketplace account.
- Look for an account switcher in the retailer’s app or website.
- Consider whether another household member placed the order.
Etsy specifically identifies a different signed-in account and guest checkout as reasons an order may not appear in the account’s purchase page.
Search confirmation email
Search mail for the retailer name, “order confirmation,” “receipt,” “invoice,” the item name, or the order number. Check spam, junk, archive, and trash folders. Also search other email accounts. Etsy advises finding the order-confirmation email and opening the order from that message; the email can provide a recovery route even when the account page does not.
Consider guest checkout
Guest orders may not be attached to the account you normally use. Open the confirmation message and follow its order link. If the message is gone, support may be able to locate the transaction using identifying details, but the retailer will decide what information it can disclose after verifying you.

Match the transaction to your payment record
Use your card, bank, or payment-service statement to confirm the approximate date, amount, and merchant descriptor. A pending authorization, a split shipment, a marketplace seller charge, or a refund can make the statement differ from the order total. These details help support distinguish the correct transaction.

Contact support with identifying information
Provide the likely email address, approximate order date, item or seller, delivery address, order number if available, and the charged amount. Do not send a full card number or account password. Use the retailer’s official support channel and follow its identity-verification process.
Retailer-specific paths and limitations
The following examples show how the general method is applied. They are not a promise that every country, app version, or order type uses the same screens.
Walmart
For Walmart online pickup, delivery, and shipping orders, the official help path is Account → Purchase History. Select the purchase, open its details, and use the view-details or print control. That process is for online orders.
Walmart also describes a receipt-lookup process for certain in-store card purchases. It asks for the store location, purchase date, card type and last four digits, and receipt total. Do not treat that in-store lookup as a general method for retrieving an online invoice; use the online order’s Purchase History page instead.

Etsy
Open Purchases and reviews and select the order. If it is not listed, Etsy recommends checking the confirmation email, spam and trash folders, other email accounts, another Etsy account, and whether the order was placed as a guest.

Invoice options depend on the purchase type and location. Etsy’s instructions describe different steps for physical and digital purchases, including print options for buyers in the UK or European Union and official invoice viewing in other locations. A tax invoice may require contacting the seller. Check the instructions that apply to your current country rather than assuming that an invoice option shown for one region is available everywhere.
Amazon UK
Amazon UK’s help guidance covers printing or downloading an invoice or order summary from the order record. Marketplace purchases can have a separate seller route: if the available document is not sufficient, the instructions provide a way to request an invoice from the Marketplace seller. The UK workflow should not be assumed to match another Amazon marketplace.
eBay
The reviewed eBay help information says that purchase history contains orders from the past seven years. That is a statement about the named eBay help page, not a universal retention period for every retailer. Open the relevant purchase-history entry and use the document or print controls shown for that order. For older transactions, search the original email and contact eBay support if the purchase is no longer visible.

Receipt versus tax invoice: choosing the right record
Use the document that matches the purpose of your request rather than automatically downloading the first available file.
Returns and warranties
A receipt, order confirmation, or order-details printout commonly helps establish where and when the purchase was made. Check the retailer or manufacturer’s current return or warranty requirements, because some processes also require the item serial number, seller identity, delivery record, or proof that payment was completed.
Employer reimbursement
Ask what your employer accepts. Some policies require an itemized receipt, while others require a tax invoice or a document showing the payment method and business name. Save the document in the format requested by the expense system and keep the confirmation email if it contains the order number.

Bookkeeping
For bookkeeping, retain enough information to connect the expense to the business purpose, date, supplier, amount, tax, and payment record. If the retailer supplies only an order summary, ask whether that is acceptable for your records and whether the seller can issue a formal invoice.
Tax documentation
Tax-document rules differ by country, tax type, and whether the purchase is personal or business-related. A retailer’s page may call a file an invoice without making it a tax invoice for your jurisdiction. Follow the retailer’s location-specific instructions and, when directed, contact the seller. If the document is for a tax filing, confirm the requirements with the relevant tax authority or a qualified adviser.

- Open the individual order and expand all details that need to appear.
- Choose the retailer’s Print control, or use the browser’s print command.
- In the printer destination, select Save as PDF or the equivalent option on your device.
- Review the preview for missing pages, clipped totals, or collapsed item details.
- Save the file in a private folder and use a descriptive filename.
Some pages hide sensitive information until you select “view details.” Avoid printing unnecessary payment data, and redact account or card information before sharing a copy when the recipient does not need it.
Keeping a usable order archive
Retrieving one receipt is easy; finding dozens later is harder without a system.
Use consistent filenames and folders
Organize by year or purpose, then use the retailer, date, order number, and document type in the filename. Keep invoices and related confirmation emails together.
Preserve the original files
Do not rely only on a screenshot. Save the downloaded PDF or print-to-PDF file, and retain the email that contains the order link or seller information. If you edit a copy to redact personal data, keep the unedited original in a secure location.

Protect personal information
Order documents can reveal your name, address, purchases, and partial payment details. Use access controls on cloud storage, avoid posting receipts publicly, and share only the pages needed for a return or reimbursement.
Do not assume permanent availability
Order-history retention and interface labels can change. Download important records when the transaction is available instead of assuming the retailer will maintain an unlimited archive. The eBay example of seven years illustrates that a stated retention period belongs to that retailer’s help information, not to online shopping generally.
Can you download a complete order history at once?
Do not assume that a retailer offers a bulk export. The documented instructions support opening and retrieving individual orders; they do not establish a common, cross-retailer download-all function. Check the specific retailer’s account settings or privacy tools if you need many records. If no export exists, retrieve the orders individually and keep a simple index containing date, retailer, order number, amount, and filename.

The order is visible but there is no invoice button
Open the full order-details view and look for a receipt, summary, print, or download control. If only a print option exists, save it as a PDF. For a formal tax invoice, follow the retailer’s country-specific guidance or contact the seller.
The amount on the receipt differs from the card statement
Check for split shipments, separate Marketplace sellers, delivery fees, discounts, gift-card payments, authorization holds, refunds, or currency conversion. Compare the final charged amount with the order’s payment breakdown before contacting support.
The confirmation email link no longer works
Sign in to the account that likely placed the order and search its history. If the purchase was a guest order, contact support with the confirmation details, approximate date, amount, and delivery information.
The retailer says the order is too old
Search archived email and payment records, then ask whether the retailer can provide an order copy or seller invoice. Retention periods are retailer-specific; do not infer one company’s period from another’s.

Do not relabel an order summary as a tax invoice. Check the applicable country and purchase-type instructions and contact the seller when the retailer directs buyers to do so.
