Start with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Retirement Savings Lost and Found Database. It can show private-sector and union retirement plans associated with your Social Security number, but a match is only a lead—not proof that money is still owed. The plan administrator must confirm your balance, vesting, prior payments or rollovers, and the exact claim or pension-election process.
What the Lost and Found Database can—and cannot—find
The Department of Labor (DOL) database is the best first search for retirement benefits tied to jobs you left behind. It searches records reported by private-sector employers and unions for defined-contribution plans, such as 401(k) plans, and defined-benefit pensions. Results can provide a plan name and contact information for the administrator responsible for answering your questions.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The database is informational. The DOL does not decide whether you are eligible, process your claim, calculate your benefit, or pay you. A result means records show that you participated, or may have participated, in a plan at some point. The account could already have been distributed, rolled into another plan, converted to an annuity, or transferred when the employer changed administrators. Contact the administrator named in the result to learn whether anything remains payable.
Recommended Free Tools
The search has important boundaries:
- It does not search individual retirement accounts (IRAs), including an IRA that received a rollover from an old workplace plan.
- It does not cover government retirement plans, Social Security benefits, or certain plans sponsored by religious organizations.
- Historical records may contain old addresses, former company names, or outdated administrator contact information.
- It does not guarantee that a benefit is vested, unpaid, or valuable enough to claim.
If you previously rolled a workplace account into an IRA, search the IRA custodian’s records and the unclaimed-property programs in the states where you lived or worked. That account is outside the DOL database.

Prepare your information before searching
A careful list of former employers makes matching a result much easier and helps an administrator verify your identity. Include employers, staffing companies, and unions for every job where you might have been eligible for retirement benefits.
Build an employer and plan timeline
- Legal and familiar names of each employer, including earlier names after a merger or acquisition.
- Work locations and the states where you were employed.
- Approximate employment start and end dates.
- Union names and local numbers, if a union sponsored the plan.
- Plan names or numbers shown on statements, enrollment forms, or benefit notices.
- Names and addresses of companies that administered the plan.
Look through old pay records, annual benefit statements, tax forms, emails, address books, and storage files. A former employer may have used a different corporate name than the name on your paychecks. Keep copies of every document you find; do not send your only original to an administrator.
Gather identity and contact documents
You will need your Social Security number to use the database. Have a current mailing address, former addresses, legal name changes, and a state-issued identification document available. Administrators may request additional proof, such as a birth certificate, marriage or divorce records, a beneficiary’s death certificate, or a signed benefit application. The exact requirements depend on the plan and your circumstances.

- Open the DOL tool. Go to lostandfound.dol.gov. Use the official address rather than a paid “recovery” service. The DOL says it does not charge a fee to recover funds and warns against anyone claiming to recover money on its behalf.
- Create or use a Login.gov account. The site requires Login.gov identity verification. Follow the prompts to verify your identity with a state-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, and any other information requested by Login.gov.
- Enter your Social Security number. The database uses it to match reported plans. Enter the number directly into the government site and do not send it to an unsolicited caller or intermediary.
- Review every result. Record the plan name, employer or union, administrator, mailing address, telephone number, website if listed, and any plan or case identifier. Compare the result with your employment timeline; similar company names can refer to unrelated plans.
- Confirm the contact information. Because records can be historical, verify that the administrator still handles the plan. If a telephone number is disconnected, search your own statements for a newer administrator name and use the abandoned-plan process described below.
Save or print the results for your records. The database is a starting point, not an application portal. Your next step is to contact each administrator separately.
What to ask the plan administrator
Use the contact information from the result and identify yourself as a former participant. Ask for the department that handles participant claims or pension benefits. Keep a dated log of calls, letters, emails, names, and reference numbers.
Questions that establish whether a benefit remains
- Does your record show that I participated in the plan, and for which dates of employment?
- Was my benefit vested under the plan’s rules?
- Has the account or pension already been paid, rolled over, transferred, or converted to an annuity?
- If money remains, what is the current account value or the monthly pension amount and commencement date?
- Are there former-administrator, merger, or plan-termination records that affect my benefit?
- Who is the current claims contact, and where should I send forms?
Request the governing documents
Request the current Summary Plan Description (SPD), the plan’s claim and appeal procedures, and any benefit statement or calculation available for your record. The SPD explains eligibility, vesting, distribution forms, and pension commencement rules. The administrator should tell you which version applies to your period of employment if the plan has since changed.

Ask for written confirmation when the administrator says no benefit is payable. The explanation should state whether the plan shows a prior distribution, a rollover, a lack of vesting, a data mismatch, or another reason. A written response gives you the information needed to correct an error or use the plan’s appeal process.
File a claim and track the deadline
Most claims require forms supplied by the administrator. Complete every field, attach the requested identity and employment documents, and keep a copy of the entire submission. Send it using the method specified in the plan procedure—such as an online portal, regular mail, certified mail, or a secure upload. The plan’s procedure controls; do not assume that an email or telephone request is a formal claim.
Under the DOL’s general guidance, a plan may take up to 90 days to decide a claim. It may take up to 180 days when it notifies you of an extension. The decision should explain the result and identify the applicable plan provisions.
If the claim is denied
A denial must be in writing and include the reasons, the plan provisions relied on, and the steps and deadline for appeal. The participant generally has 60 days to request review, although the exact deadline in the plan procedure controls. Submit a focused appeal that addresses each reason for denial and includes documents the administrator did not previously consider.
Keep proof of delivery and a calendar reminder for every deadline. If the administrator does not follow the written procedure, or you cannot obtain plan records, contact an Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) Benefits Advisor for assistance.

When the employer has disappeared or the plan was abandoned
A closed business does not necessarily mean the retirement benefit vanished. A plan may have been terminated, merged into another plan, or placed with a qualified termination administrator (QTA).

Use the Abandoned Plan Search
Search EBSA’s Abandoned Plan Search by the employer or plan name. The search can identify a plan that is being terminated or has already been terminated and name the QTA responsible for winding it up. Contact that QTA and provide your identifying information, employment dates, and any old statements.
Ask EBSA for help when no contact can be found
If the employer and plan cannot be located, call an EBSA Benefits Advisor at 1-866-444-3272. Explain the employer’s names, work locations, approximate dates, and any plan documents you have. EBSA can help you understand which agency or administrator may hold the records; it does not replace the administrator’s claim decision.
EBSA’s abandoned-plan program allows a custodian QTA to close an abandoned individual-account plan and distribute benefits. The QTA may need to search for participants before distributing assets, so keep your address and beneficiary information current with the QTA and respond promptly to requests.
Understand the limits of participant searches
The IRS no longer offers letter-forwarding to locate retirement-plan participants. For terminated defined-contribution plans, DOL guidance identifies minimum fiduciary search steps that can include certified mail, checking employer or related-plan records, asking the designated beneficiary, and using free electronic search tools. If you are contacted during such a search, verify the caller through the plan or QTA’s published contact information before providing sensitive data.
Know what happens after a match by plan type
Your choices depend on whether the benefit is in a defined-contribution account, a traditional defined-benefit pension, or a cash-balance plan. The administrator and the plan documents determine the actual options.
| Plan type | What the benefit usually looks like | Possible next action | Key caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Defined-contribution plan, such as a 401(k) | An individual account with contributions and investment results | Claim the account and review a lump-sum distribution, a direct rollover to an accepting employer plan, or a rollover to an IRA | Taxes and a possible early-distribution penalty can apply to a cash payment; follow the plan’s rollover instructions |
| Traditional defined-benefit pension | A promised benefit calculated under a formula, often payable monthly | Confirm vesting, benefit amount, and the earliest commencement date; elect a payment form when eligible | The benefit generally stays in the plan until eligibility; do not assume a lump sum is available |
| Cash-balance plan | A defined-benefit promise expressed as a stated account balance with credited amounts | Review the plan’s pension commencement and any transfer or rollover provisions | Transfer choices and timing depend on the specific plan terms |
| Terminated or abandoned individual-account plan | Assets held while the plan is being wound up | Contact the named QTA and complete its distribution paperwork | Use the QTA’s procedure and verify identity before accepting a payment |
Defined-contribution accounts
A 401(k) or similar account may offer a lump sum, a direct rollover to a new employer’s plan that accepts rollovers, or a rollover to an IRA. Some plans automatically distribute small balances under the plan’s rules. Read the distribution notice carefully: a check payable to you can create withholding and tax consequences, while a properly completed direct rollover generally keeps the money in a tax-advantaged retirement arrangement.

Traditional pensions
A traditional defined-benefit pension generally remains with the plan until you reach the age or service milestone specified in the SPD. Ask for a written benefit estimate at each available commencement date and compare the payment forms offered, such as a single-life annuity or a joint-and-survivor annuity, if listed in the plan. Do not assume that a pension can be cashed out merely because you changed jobs.

Cash-balance plans are legally defined-benefit plans even though statements show a balance. The plan may describe a lump-sum transfer option or only annuity payments. Request the SPD and distribution estimate before choosing a form of payment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Review tax and penalty consequences before taking cash
A lump-sum payment from a workplace plan may be taxable as ordinary income and may also be subject to an additional penalty, depending on your age, the type of distribution, and an exception that may apply. A direct transfer to another eligible retirement plan or IRA generally preserves tax advantages, but the receiving plan must accept the transaction and the rollover must follow its instructions.
Ask the administrator:
- Whether the payment is eligible for direct rollover.
- Which portion, if any, is taxable or subject to mandatory withholding.
- Whether the plan has special rules for after-tax contributions or employer stock.
- What deadlines apply to your election.
Ask the receiving plan or IRA custodian for its acceptance and account-registration instructions before requesting a distribution. The administrator can explain plan mechanics, but it cannot provide individualized tax advice. For a decision involving a large balance, unusual contributions, or a potential penalty, consult a qualified tax professional and use the current tax guidance that applies to your situation.
Separate an old workplace plan from a later IRA rollover
It is common to have two different trails: the original employer plan and a later IRA that received the money. The DOL database may identify the original plan, but it will not identify the IRA custodian. Search old rollover confirmations, brokerage statements, tax forms, and bank records for the destination account. Contact the custodian’s account-recovery department and update your address and beneficiary information.
If the custodian no longer exists or you cannot identify it, check the unclaimed-property programs in the states where you lived or worked. Use the name and tax identification information shown on old statements to distinguish a rollover IRA from an unrelated account.

Troubleshoot common search and claim problems
No database result appears
- Recheck former employer names, including predecessor companies and spelling variations.
- Look for union-sponsored plans that may be listed under the local or trust’s legal name.
- Search your paper and electronic records for a plan number or administrator.
- Remember that government plans, certain religious-organization plans, IRAs, and Social Security are outside the tool’s scope.
- Contact EBSA if you have evidence of a private-sector plan but cannot identify its administrator.
The result shows an administrator that cannot be reached
Compare the result with your latest statement and any merger notice. Search EBSA’s Abandoned Plan Search by both the employer’s current and former names. If the plan is listed, contact the QTA. If it is not listed and the employer is gone, call EBSA at 1-866-444-3272 with all identifying details.
The administrator says you were never a participant
Ask for the determination in writing and provide payroll records, enrollment forms, statements, or union records that show eligibility or contributions. Request the SPD that applied during your employment. If the response is a formal denial, follow the written appeal procedure and its deadline rather than relying on an informal telephone dispute.
The administrator says the benefit was already paid
Request the distribution date, payment method, destination account or address, and any confirmation or tax form associated with the payment. Compare that information with your bank, rollover, and tax records. A prior payment may explain why a database record exists even though no current balance remains.
You receive an unexpected recovery offer
Do not pay a person or company that claims to recover the funds on the DOL’s behalf. Contact the administrator, QTA, or EBSA directly using contact information you independently verify. Protect your Social Security number and identity documents until you know who is requesting them and why.
A practical record-keeping checklist
Create one folder—paper or encrypted digital—for the entire search. Keep:
- Your employer and union timeline, including former company names and addresses.
- Database result pages and the date you searched.
- Statements, plan notices, tax forms, and rollover confirmations.
- Copies of every claim, appeal, identity document, and beneficiary record submitted.
- A call and correspondence log with dates, names, reference numbers, and promised follow-up.
- The SPD, claim procedure, appeal deadline, benefit estimate, and final determination.
Update the plan administrator or QTA whenever your address, legal name, or beneficiary information changes. Retirement records can remain open for decades, and accurate contact information reduces the chance that a future notice is missed.
Your next move
Make the DOL database search your first step, then treat each result as a contact to verify rather than as proof of available cash. The administrator’s records and plan documents determine whether you have a vested unpaid benefit, whether a pension is payable now or later, and whether a rollover or cash distribution is available. If the employer or plan has disappeared, use EBSA’s abandoned-plan resources and call a Benefits Advisor. Keep the paperwork, observe the claim and appeal deadlines, and review tax consequences before electing any payment.
