The fastest way to find a mission-driven small-business lender is to search the U.S. Treasury’s certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) list and awards database, then check the Small Business Administration’s authorized Microloan intermediary directory. Filter every result by your business’s state, county or city, confirm that it offers the amount and purpose you need, and compare written terms before applying. SBA Lender Match can provide additional leads, but it is not a loan application and does not guarantee a match or approval.

What a CDFI or nonprofit lender is—and is not
A Community Development Financial Institution is a mission-focused financial institution certified by the Treasury Department’s CDFI Fund. Certified CDFIs can be banks, credit unions, loan funds or venture-capital funds. They may provide commercial loans, technical assistance, financial education or other services, depending on the institution.

The CDFI Fund supplies financing and other support to CDFIs; it does not underwrite your individual borrowing request. The Fund’s FAQ states: “The CDFI Fund does not make loans directly to individuals—nor does it directly finance specific projects.” You apply to the CDFI or nonprofit intermediary that serves your area, and that institution sets its own eligibility rules, underwriting process and loan terms.

Two official Treasury ways to find a CDFI
Search the certified-CDFI list
The CDFI Fund maintains a list of currently certified CDFIs that can be sorted by organization name, location and institution type. Start with your state, then inspect each organization’s profile. A listing establishes certification, not that the institution has an open business-loan product for your company.
- Open the Treasury CDFI Fund’s certified-CDFI list.
- Sort or filter by your state and, where available, by institution type.
- Read the organization profile for the communities it serves and the financial products it describes.
- Ask whether it lends in your county or city, not merely whether it has an office somewhere in the state.
- Confirm the smallest and largest loan amounts, permitted uses, current application intake and expected decision timeline.
Use the CDFI awards database
The CDFI Fund’s searchable awards database lets you select a state and filter awards to the CDFI Program. Awardee profiles can reveal an organization’s location, mission, loan focus and contact information. If no awardee appears in your immediate area, the Fund recommends checking nearby communities. A nearby award recipient may serve a wider rural, metropolitan or multi-county area than its street address suggests.
- Choose your state in the awards search.
- Filter the program field to the CDFI Program.
- Open profiles for organizations whose stated mission and geography fit your business.
- Contact the organization to verify that it currently offers small-business financing and accepts applications from your location.
Businesses owned by Native American, Alaska Native or Native Hawaiian entrepreneurs can also check organizations that received NACA Program awards, while still confirming the lender’s current products and geographic coverage.
Find an SBA Microloan intermediary near you
The SBA Microloan program works through nonprofit, community-based intermediaries with lending, management and technical-assistance experience. The intermediary—not the SBA—makes the credit decision, approves or declines the request and sets the loan’s terms. SBA’s authorized intermediary directory can be filtered by state or U.S. territory and provides service-area and contact information.

- Filter it to your state or territory.
- Check each intermediary’s stated service area; some cover selected counties, tribal areas or neighboring states rather than an entire state.
- Call or email to confirm that it is accepting applications, has funds available and lends for your proposed use.
- Ask for its current application checklist, underwriting standards and technical-assistance options.
Contacting an intermediary is the correct route for an SBA Microloan. You do not submit a Microloan application to the Treasury CDFI Fund.
What an SBA Microloan can cover
SBA describes Microloans as loans of up to $50,000 for eligible small businesses and certain not-for-profit childcare centers to start or expand. The figures below are SBA program information accessed in 2026, not a quote from any particular intermediary.
| Program item | SBA information | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum loan | $50,000 | A program ceiling; an intermediary may offer less. |
| Average loan | About $13,000 | An SBA-reported average, not an amount you should expect to receive. |
| General interest-rate range | 8%–13% | A general range on SBA’s page; the intermediary sets the actual rate and calculation method. |
| Maximum repayment term | Seven years | The longest possible term; your amount, use, lender rules and circumstances determine the actual term. |
Eligible uses for a small business
SBA lists operating, for-profit U.S. businesses that meet SBA size standards and are not in an ineligible category. Permitted uses include working capital, inventory, supplies, furniture, fixtures, machinery and equipment. Microloan proceeds cannot be used to repay existing debts or purchase real estate.
Because intermediaries apply their own underwriting and documentation requirements, ask whether your specific expense qualifies before you prepare a full application. A lender may require an itemized budget, vendor estimates or evidence that the purchase supports the stated business purpose.
Use SBA Lender Match as a second search route
SBA Lender Match is a lead-finding service for businesses seeking participating SBA lenders. SBA says interested-lender summaries are prepared two business days after a request and that more than 800 lenders participate across all 50 states and U.S. territories. Those figures are statements on SBA’s current Lender Match page; verify the current numbers when you use the service.

SBA describes the tool this way: “Lender Match isn’t a loan application — it’s a tool to help businesses find lenders in their communities.” A response can produce no match, and a match does not establish eligibility, approval, loan size, rate or availability. After receiving a lender summary, contact each lender and complete its separate application.

- Business location and legal structure.
- Amount requested and a specific use-of-funds plan.
- Whether the business is a startup or operating company.
- Time in business and relevant industry experience.
- Personal and business credit history.
- Recent revenue, cash-flow information and financial projections.
- Available collateral and willingness to provide a personal guarantee, if required.
- A business plan, particularly for startup funding.
A practical search workflow
1. Define the financing need
Write down the amount, exact use, desired funding date, business location and stage of the company. Separate one-time purchases from recurring working capital. Then draft a repayment plan based on realistic cash flow rather than your best month. This information allows a lender to tell you quickly whether its product fits.
2. Build a location-aware shortlist
Use the Treasury certified-CDFI list and awards database first. Record each organization’s service geography, contact details, stated loan products and whether it appears to serve businesses like yours. Add SBA Microloan intermediaries that cover your state or territory. Keep organizations that are physically nearby even if their address is outside your county; service area matters more than office distance.
3. Confirm the product before applying
Ask each candidate four screening questions:
- Do you lend to businesses in my city or county?
- Do you offer the amount I need for this exact use?
- Are you accepting applications and funding this product now?
- What minimum credit, revenue, time-in-business, collateral or owner requirements apply?
These calls prevent a common mistake: assuming that a CDFI award, certification or directory entry means a lender currently has the right loan available.
4. Submit only the documents the lender requests
Typical requests can include an identification document, business formation records, ownership information, tax returns, bank statements, a debt schedule, a business plan, financial projections, collateral details and vendor quotes. Requirements differ, so ask for the current checklist rather than sending sensitive records to an unverified contact.

5. Compare written offers
Do not choose solely on the advertised interest rate. Request a written term sheet or equivalent disclosure and compare the same fields for every lender.
| Comparison field | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Service area | Is my actual business location eligible? Are there county, city, rural, urban or territory limits? |
| Loan purpose | Is my proposed use permitted? Are debt repayment, real estate or other uses excluded? |
| Amount and disbursement | What is the approved amount, and will funds arrive all at once or in stages? |
| Interest or APR | Is the rate fixed or variable? How is interest calculated, and what is the equivalent annual cost? |
| Fees | Are there origination, application, servicing, late-payment, documentation or required-deposit charges? |
| Credit and cash flow | What minimum score, revenue, cash-flow coverage or other qualifying factors apply? |
| Collateral and guarantees | What business assets, personal assets or personal guarantees are required? |
| Repayment | What is the payment amount, frequency and first due date? Is there a grace period? |
| Prepayment | Can I repay early without a penalty or additional charge? |
| Default and acceleration | Under what circumstances can the lender demand full repayment? |
| Support | Does the lender provide advising, financial education or technical assistance, and is it free or separately priced? |
SBA specifically suggests asking about interest rates, minimum credit score, cash-flow requirements, other qualifying factors, prepayment penalties, grace periods and when full repayment can be demanded. Add fees, collateral, payment schedule and total repayment to that list so you can compare the actual cost and risk.
How to calculate the real cost before accepting
Ask the lender for the total amount you will repay over the full scheduled term, including mandatory fees. A lower nominal rate can still cost more if it carries a large origination fee, frequent payments or a short term that increases each payment. A longer term may reduce the payment while increasing total interest.
Request an amortization schedule showing principal and interest by payment date. Confirm whether payments are weekly, biweekly or monthly, because two loans with the same annual rate can create very different cash-flow pressure. If the lender quotes an APR, ask which fees are included and which are outside the APR calculation.
Questions that expose unfavorable terms
Variable rates and payment changes
Ask what index or formula controls a variable rate, how often it can change and whether the contract caps increases. Request an example of the payment if the rate rises.

Personal guarantees and collateral
A personal guarantee can make you personally responsible if the business does not repay. Collateral may include equipment, accounts receivable or other assets. Ask exactly what is pledged, how lien filings work and when liens are released.
Grace periods and early repayment
“No payment for a period” may mean interest continues to accrue. Ask whether a grace period postpones principal, interest or both. Confirm that early repayment will not trigger a penalty, minimum-interest charge or fee.
Default and acceleration
Ask which missed payments, covenant violations or other events let the lender accelerate the balance. Find out whether there is a cure period, how late charges are calculated and who to contact before a payment is missed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCommon search mistakes and how to avoid them
- Searching only by office address: A lender across a county line may serve you, while a nearby office may not. Verify the stated service area.
- Treating certification as an offer: CDFI certification and a Treasury award do not prove that a particular business loan is open, affordable or available to you.
- Assuming SBA sets your Microloan terms: The intermediary makes the decision and sets the rate, fees, collateral requirements and schedule within program rules.
- Using the $50,000 maximum as a target: The maximum is a ceiling, and SBA reports an average of about $13,000. Request only what your budget and repayment plan support.
- Confusing a Lender Match result with approval: A lender summary is an introduction, not a commitment. Complete the lender’s application and underwriting.
- Comparing rates without fees: Collect total repayment, all mandatory charges and payment frequency in writing.
- Applying before defining the use: Vague requests can be screened out and may conflict with use restrictions. Prepare an itemized spending plan.
- Ignoring technical assistance: Advising or financial education can be valuable, especially for a startup, but ask whether it is included, optional or separately charged.
A simple worksheet for your lender calls
Keep one row per organization and fill it in during the initial call:
| Field | Your note |
|---|---|
| Organization and contact | Name, representative, phone or email, date contacted |
| Eligible location | City, county, state or territory confirmed |
| Product | CDFI loan, SBA Microloan or another business product |
| Amount and use | Minimum, maximum and whether your proposed use qualifies |
| Eligibility | Time in business, size, credit, cash flow, collateral and owner rules |
| Cost | Rate or APR method, fees and estimated total repayment |
| Payments | Amount, frequency, term, first due date and grace period |
| Flexibility | Prepayment policy, default terms and acceleration triggers |
| Support | Advising, education or technical assistance |
| Next step | Documents required and application deadline |
Which route should you use?
| Your situation | Best first route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want a mission-driven lender and are unsure what exists locally. | Treasury certified-CDFI list and awards database | They identify certified institutions and awardees that you can screen by location and product. |
| You need a relatively small startup or expansion loan and your use fits SBA rules. | SBA Microloan intermediary directory | It identifies authorized nonprofit intermediaries by state or territory. |
| You want additional lender leads or are unsure which SBA lender type fits. | SBA Lender Match | It can send interested-lender summaries, but you still apply directly and approval is not guaranteed. |
| You need more than a small loan, real-estate financing or debt refinancing. | Ask CDFIs and other lenders about separate products | SBA Microloan proceeds cannot repay existing debt or buy real estate, and product limits vary by institution. |
What to do if no lender appears nearby
Expand the search from your city to your county, neighboring counties and the rest of your state. Check whether an organization serves rural or metropolitan areas remotely. Ask the Treasury-listed organization whether it refers applicants to a partner CDFI or intermediary. For Native American, Alaska Native or Native Hawaiian businesses, include NACA Program awardees in the search.
If the issue is product fit rather than geography, explain the need to the organization and ask whether it offers a different loan size, working-capital product or technical-assistance program. Do not assume that a directory result means funding is available; ask about current capacity and application status.
Bottom line for finding a nonprofit small-business lender
Start with the Treasury CDFI directories to identify certified, mission-driven institutions, then use the SBA intermediary list when an SBA Microloan fits your amount and use. Treat Lender Match as an additional introduction, not a promise of financing. The lender that is closest or advertises the lowest rate is not automatically the least expensive choice: service area, eligible use, underwriting, fees, collateral, payment schedule, total repayment and default terms determine whether the loan is workable for your business.
