Finding a regulated financial adviser safely is a process, not a directory search. Define the decision you need help with, create a shortlist, check each firm’s FCA authorisation and permissions, verify its contact details, compare scope, expertise and written charges, then choose only when you understand the recommendation and feel no pressure.
What “regulated financial adviser” means in the UK
A regulated adviser works through a firm authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) for particular regulated activities. That status gives you important protections and a formal route for complaints, but it is not a guarantee that an investment will perform well, that every recommendation will suit you, or that fraud is impossible.

Authorisation is activity-specific. A firm may be permitted to advise on investments but not pensions, mortgages, equity release or insurance. Check the permission for the service you actually need rather than treating “financial adviser” as a universal qualification.

Its consumer guidance puts the distinction plainly: “Using an authorised firm, rather than an approved individual, increases the likelihood that you’ll be protected if something goes wrong.” That increases likelihood; it does not remove risk. Check the record at the time you choose an adviser because permissions, trading names, contact details and regulatory histories can change.

Step 1: Define the decision you need help with
Write down the decision, timescale and outcome you want before searching. A precise brief makes it easier to find relevant expertise and compare like-for-like proposals.
Common advice needs
- Retirement planning: building an income plan, using pensions efficiently or deciding when to take benefits.
- Pension transfer or consolidation: a specialist area where the value of guarantees, charges and the risks of giving up benefits must be assessed carefully.
- Investing: choosing an investment strategy, reviewing an existing portfolio or planning withdrawals.
- Inheritance and later-life planning: estate planning, care-cost considerations or decisions involving powers of attorney and family finances. Later-life specialists may be more appropriate than a general planner.
- Mortgage, protection or insurance: these have different regulatory permissions and specialist advice processes. Equity release, in particular, requires an adviser with relevant later-life and equity-release expertise.
- Comprehensive planning: coordinating cash flow, tax, pensions, investments, protection and estate objectives over time.
Separate a one-off question from a continuing relationship. Someone who needs a pension transfer assessment may not need an ongoing investment-management service. Conversely, a complex retirement plan may require implementation and regular reviews. State the scope you want when you contact firms and ask what they would exclude.
Step 2: Build a shortlist without treating a directory as approval
Use several routes to find names, then verify every candidate independently. MoneyHelper identifies online searches such as VouchedFor and Unbiased, the Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA) for later-life needs, and the Personal Finance Society’s search. Recommendations from people you trust, or an arrangement offered through an employer, trade union or similar organisation, can also produce leads.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
These services help you discover candidates. A directory profile, review, qualification or recommendation is not FCA authorisation and does not prove that the firm has permission for your particular need.
Shortlist at least three where practical
MoneyHelper suggests contacting at least three advisers so you can compare service and cost. Three is a practical minimum, not a rule: a highly specialised need may leave you with fewer genuine candidates, while a broad planning requirement may justify more. Record the same information for each firm so the comparison is fair:
- Legal firm name and trading name.
- FCA reference or register details once verified.
- Services and client types served.
- Independent or restricted status and the precise restriction.
- Relevant specialist experience and qualifications.
- Initial, implementation and ongoing charges.
- Whether meetings are in person, remote or both.
- What happens after the initial recommendation.
Step 3: Check FCA authorisation and the exact permission
Use the FCA Firm Checker first
Open the FCA website directly and use the Firm Checker. Search the firm’s name, then select the product or service that matches your need. Confirm that the result says the firm is authorised and that the permission covers the activity you are considering. A firm’s appearance in a search is not enough if the listed permissions do not match the proposed work.

For example, a firm authorised for investment advice may not be authorised for mortgage advice or equity release. Ask the adviser to explain which regulated activity covers your case, then check that activity yourself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the Financial Services Register for the fuller record
The Financial Services Register provides more detail, including current and previous regulatory records, firm and individual information, and disciplinary or other regulatory action where applicable. Review:
- the exact legal name and any trading names;
- current status rather than relying on an old search result;
- the listed permissions and any restrictions;
- the firm’s official phone number, email, website and address;
- any relevant past status, warnings or enforcement information; and
- whether the person you are dealing with is connected to the firm in the way they claim.
An individual adviser does not always need to appear as a separately authorised entry. The firm and its permissions are the primary check. If the adviser is presented as an appointed representative, verify that relationship as well: an appointed representative acts for a principal firm, and the permitted activity depends on that arrangement.
Step 4: Verify that the person contacting you is genuine
Clone firms impersonate real authorised businesses by copying a genuine name, registration information and branding while supplying a different phone number, email address or website. The safest approach is to obtain contact details from the FCA Firm Checker or Register and use those details yourself.
- Navigate to the FCA site directly rather than using a link in an unsolicited message.
- Find the firm and copy the phone number, email address and website shown on the official record.
- End the original call or message and contact the firm using those verified details.
- Ask whether the person, proposal and appointment are genuine.
- Do not send identity documents, bank details, pension statements or money until the firm confirms the contact.
Be especially cautious if someone says the FCA record is out of date, asks you to use a number they provide instead, or pressures you to act before you can check. An unexpected approach promising fast or unusually high returns is a scam warning. Never move pension or investment money because of a cold call, email or text.

| Advice description | What it generally means | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Independent | The adviser can consider products across the whole relevant market, subject to the scope of the service. | “Which parts of the market and which product types will you consider for my situation?” |
| Restricted | The adviser works within a defined provider range, product area or other stated limitation. | “Exactly which providers, products or situations are excluded, and could that affect my options?” |
Either type can provide tailored advice. The label alone does not establish quality or suitability. A restriction may be reasonable for a narrow service, but it should be disclosed clearly and match your needs. Ask whether the restriction applies to the whole firm or only to a particular service.
Step 6: Check relevant expertise, qualifications and firm structure
Ask about experience with the issue you wrote down, not just a general “financial planning” credential. A pension-transfer case, later-life planning, equity release and insurance each require different knowledge and permissions.
Questions about expertise
- How often do you handle cases like mine?
- Which regulated permissions cover this work?
- What information will you need before deciding whether to advise?
- Who will do the technical work and who will sign off the recommendation?
- Do you provide implementation and ongoing reviews, or only a written recommendation?
For retail investment advice, the FCA requires advisers to meet qualification and professional-standing requirements. The adviser must hold an annual Statement of Professional Standing (SPS) from an accredited body. The FCA names the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI), the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) and Walbrook Institute London among the accredited bodies.
An SPS is evidence of meeting the relevant professional-standing requirement; it is not proof that a particular recommendation is suitable. Ask what qualification is relevant to your specific need and how recently the adviser has handled comparable cases.
Understand an appointed representative
An appointed representative operates under a principal firm. Ask for the principal’s legal name, confirm the relationship on the FCA record and check that the proposed activity is within the arrangement’s permission. Do not assume that an appointed representative has the same authority as an independently authorised firm for every service.
Step 7: Compare the service you will actually receive
Two advisers can use the same broad label while offering very different work. Ask each shortlisted firm to describe its process in writing.

Before a recommendation
- What fact-find will you complete, and which documents will you need?
- Will you analyse existing pensions, investments, debts, tax position and cash-flow needs where relevant?
- Will you explain alternatives, risks, assumptions and the reasons for rejecting other options?
- How long should the initial advice take, and who will be my main contact?
At recommendation and implementation
- Will I receive a written report explaining the recommendation and its reasons?
- Will you arrange applications, transfers or policy changes, or will I do that myself?
- Are product, platform, dealing or adviser charges separate from your advice fee?
- What happens if an application is declined or a transfer cannot proceed?
After implementation
- Are reviews included, optional or charged separately?
- How often are reviews offered, and what will each review cover?
- Can I cancel ongoing advice, and what notice or final charge applies?
- Will you monitor investments or simply review them when I contact you?
Location can matter for accessibility, but remote advice can be suitable if you are comfortable with the technology and document process. Treat convenience as one comparison factor, not a substitute for authorisation, scope and clear fees.

Step 8: Compare written charges in cash terms
Ask for the charging structure and likely total before advice starts. FCA rules allow hourly, fixed-fee, percentage-based or combined structures. The firm must disclose how it charges in writing upfront, then agree and disclose the total charges once the amount is known.
| Charge element | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Initial advice | Is it hourly, fixed, percentage-based or a combination? What work is included? |
| Implementation | Is arranging a pension transfer, investment, insurance or other transaction included or billed separately? |
| Ongoing advice | What percentage or fixed amount applies, how often is it collected, and what review service does it buy? |
| Product and platform costs | Which charges come from the investment, pension, platform or provider rather than the adviser? |
| Stopping the service | Are there exit, cancellation or minimum-term charges? |
MoneyHelper gives illustrative examples on its consumer guidance page of hourly charges of £100–£350, an initial percentage of 1–3% and ongoing percentage charges of 0.5–1%. These are examples from that guide, not a current UK average, price recommendation or quotation for your circumstances. Obtain your own written figures and convert percentages into pounds using the amount you expect to invest or transfer.
For each firm, write down both the one-off amount and the expected annual cost. A lower percentage may still cost more if the service is broader or the invested sum is larger. Compare what each charge covers rather than choosing the smallest number in isolation.
Step 9: Use the first meeting to test clarity and suitability
A proper advice process normally begins with a fact-find. The adviser should understand your objectives, finances, time horizon, capacity for loss, existing arrangements and relevant constraints before recommending anything.
Good signs
- The adviser explains the firm’s authorisation, advice scope and restrictions without evasion.
- Questions are specific to your circumstances rather than a generic sales script.
- Costs, conflicts and implementation steps are explained before you commit.
- You receive a written recommendation that sets out reasons, risks and alternatives.
- You are given time to read the report and ask questions.
Stop or pause when
- You are rushed to sign, transfer money or disclose security information.
- The recommendation is presented as guaranteed or unusually high-return.
- The adviser cannot explain the restriction, permission or total cost.
- You are discouraged from checking the FCA record or obtaining another quote.
- No written report or clear explanation is offered.
Ask the adviser to restate anything you do not understand. You can decline, pause or seek another opinion. A regulated firm should be able to explain why a recommendation fits your objectives and risks without relying on jargon or urgency.

A practical comparison checklist
Keep one record for every shortlisted firm and complete it before choosing:
| Check | Evidence to record |
|---|---|
| Authorisation | Firm name, FCA status and permission for the exact service. |
| Contact authenticity | Phone, email, website and address matched to the official FCA record. |
| Advice scope | Independent or restricted, with the restriction described. |
| Specialist fit | Experience and qualifications relevant to your decision. |
| Firm structure | Directly authorised firm or appointed representative, including the principal where relevant. |
| Service | Fact-find, written report, implementation, reviews and cancellation terms. |
| Cost | Initial, implementation, ongoing and product/platform charges in pounds where possible. |
| Decision quality | Clear reasons, risks, alternatives and enough time to decide. |
What recent consumers considered when shopping around
FCA research published in 2024 found that 35% of recently advised adults whose adviser relationship was around two to three years old or less had shopped around before choosing. The report’s 2024 base was 300, so this is a survey result, not a claim about all UK consumers.
Among the relevant shoppers, 59% considered fees or charges and 53% considered whether the adviser or firm appeared on the FCA Financial Services Register. Seventeen per cent said comparing advisers was difficult; that comparison-ease question used a 2024 base of 118. These figures show why fees and register status belong in a comparison, but they do not prove that shopping around causes better advice or outcomes.
If something goes wrong
First complain to the firm, using its written complaints procedure. Explain what happened, include the documents you have and state the outcome you are seeking. Keep copies and note dates, names and promises.
If the firm’s response does not resolve the issue, or it does not respond within the applicable timeframe, consider the Financial Ombudsman Service. MoneyHelper explains the complaint route and relevant deadlines. The availability of compensation or other protection depends on the circumstances, the firm’s status and the service involved, so do not treat authorisation as a guarantee of recovery.
For suspected impersonation or an investment scam, stop communicating through the unverified contact route, do not send further money and report the concern through the appropriate official channels. Contact your bank promptly if you have already transferred funds.
Bottom line
The safest way to find a regulated financial adviser in the UK is to verify the firm, not merely the person or directory listing. Match FCA permission to your exact need, confirm the contact details from the official record, understand independent or restricted scope, test specialist competence, compare written charges and insist on a clear recommendation without pressure. Recheck the regulatory record immediately before you proceed.
