How to Find a Lost Certificate of Deposit Through Bank Records and State Unclaimed-Property Databases

To find a lost certificate of deposit (CD), first identify the issuing bank and determine whether it is still open, merged into another institution, or failed. Contact the current bank or successor for an old-CD records search. If the bank failed, search the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) closed-bank unclaimed-funds database. Also search the official unclaimed-property programs for every state where the owner lived or did business, using MissingMoney.com as a free multi-state starting point. You will generally need to prove your identity; an heir must also prove entitlement to the money.

Losing the paper certificate does not by itself mean the deposit is gone or still open. The account may have matured, renewed, been withdrawn, transferred after a merger, or been reported as unclaimed property. Treat every search result as a lead until the responsible institution or state confirms the claim.

What a “lost CD” actually means

A certificate of deposit is a deposit account, while the certificate is a record of that account. The document may show the original principal, interest rate, maturity date, account number and renewal terms, but possession of the paper is not what determines whether money is payable. A bank’s records, a successor institution, the FDIC or a state unclaimed-property office may now hold the relevant information or proceeds.

An old CD can therefore fall into several different paths:

  • The original bank is open and can search its deposit or archived-records systems.
  • The bank merged, changed its name or sold deposits, so a successor institution now holds the records.
  • The bank failed, and records or unpaid deposits moved through the FDIC process.
  • The account became dormant and was reported to a state as unclaimed property.
  • The CD was closed, withdrawn or redeemed years ago, leaving no recoverable balance.

The goal is to identify the current custodian of the deposit or the proceeds, not merely to locate a piece of paper.

Start by collecting every clue

Before contacting an institution, make a record of the information you have. Small details matter because names, addresses and bank identities may have changed.

  • Certificate or account number, even if only partially legible.
  • Bank name as printed on the certificate, statement or canceled check.
  • Branch city and state.
  • Issue date, maturity date and any renewal date.
  • Original principal or an approximate amount.
  • Renewal notices, annual statements, tax forms and interest statements.
  • Canceled checks, deposit slips or other documents showing the bank.
  • Every address where the owner lived or conducted business.
  • Exact name spellings, initials, former surnames and common misspellings.
  • For a deceased owner, the death certificate and estate or probate papers already available.

Photograph or scan documents before sending anything. Keep a log of the institution contacted, the date, the department, the representative’s name and any case or reference number.

Identify the bank’s current status

The first record request depends on what happened to the issuing institution. FDIC Bank Find can be used to trace an FDIC-insured bank’s history and identify a successor or failure. The route changes as follows:

Bank status Likely record custodian First action
Still open The same bank Ask its deposit, dormant-account or records department to search for the CD.
Merged or renamed The successor institution Use the bank’s historical name, branch and dates when requesting a legacy-record search.
Failed The FDIC process and, in some cases, a state unclaimed-property office Search the FDIC closed-bank unclaimed-funds database and follow its claim instructions.

When a bank has failed, FDIC records policy states that unclaimed deposit records are transferred from assuming institutions to the FDIC after 18 months following the institution’s failure. That timing is a records-policy figure, not a guarantee that every account will appear immediately or that a balance remains.

How to contact an open or successor bank

  1. Call or write the bank’s deposit-operations, dormant-account or records department rather than a general branch desk.
  2. State that you are requesting a historical CD search and provide the owner’s full name, former names, addresses, branch, approximate dates and any certificate number.
  3. Ask whether the bank requires a notarized affidavit, identification, a signature card, estate documents or other proof before releasing information.
  4. Ask whether the account was renewed automatically, redeemed, transferred during a merger or reported to a state.
  5. Request written confirmation of the search result, including the date range searched and the reason if no record was found.

A bank may retain records under a different account number after a merger. Give the successor every historical identifier instead of assuming that a failed search under the old number ends the inquiry.

Search state unclaimed-property programs

State unclaimed-property offices administer dormant deposits and other financial property under state law. Search the official program for every state where the owner lived or did business. The state associated with the property is not always the state where the bank branch was located, so limiting the search to one branch state can miss a claim.

Use the right search terms

Search under more than “certificate of deposit.” State databases may classify the same money as:

  • Certificate of deposit.
  • CD.
  • Matured time deposit.
  • Time deposit.
  • Savings or deposit account.
  • Other financial-institution property.

Run searches for the owner’s current and former surnames, initials, alternate spellings and business names. If the database permits an address or city filter, try prior addresses one at a time. Official state searches are free.

Use MissingMoney.com as a broad first pass

Most states participate in MissingMoney.com, a free multi-state search managed by the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA). Enter the owner’s name, review possible matches and then open the official state result. The state’s own website controls the claim requirements, deadlines and acceptable documents; MissingMoney.com is a discovery tool, not the final claims authority.

Search even when the bank says it has no record

A bank’s current systems may not include an account that was already remitted to a state. Conversely, a state result can reflect an old account name or address that the bank no longer uses. Run both searches and compare the bank name, owner name, address and reported amount before filing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the FDIC when the bank failed

The FDIC closed-bank unclaimed-funds database accepts a name or check number. You can narrow results by failed institution, city and state. A certificate number may not be the searchable field, so try the owner’s name and any check number associated with the deposit or payout.

  1. Search the owner’s legal name, then try former surnames and spelling variations.
  2. Filter by the failed bank, city or state when you have that information.
  3. Open each plausible match and compare the address, institution and other identifying details.
  4. Save the FDIC reference number displayed with the match.
  5. Follow the FDIC mailing and documentation instructions for the claim.

An FDIC match is evidence that a record may exist, not proof that the claimant is entitled to the money. The FDIC will determine what documentation is sufficient.

Understand CD dormancy and transfer timing

There is no single national CD dormancy period. NAUPA’s current state table shows that many listed states use three or five years, while others use six, seven or ten years or refer directly to state law. The period may depend on the property type, maturity, owner contact and state rules.

State example CD dormancy period shown in NAUPA’s table
Alabama Three years
Colorado Five years
Hawaii Seven years
North Carolina Ten years

These examples illustrate the variation; they do not replace the current law or reporting instructions for the state involved. A CD’s maturity date, renewal activity and owner contact can affect when a state considers it dormant. Check the live official state guidance before relying on a period.

Prepare proof of ownership or heirship

Identity verification is a normal part of the process. FDIC Consumer News published in December 2020 explains that a claimant may need to prove identity and that an heir may need to prove heirship. The specific office handling the claim will identify acceptable documents.

If you are the original owner

  • Government-issued photo identification.
  • Documents connecting your current name to the name on the CD, including former-name records when applicable.
  • Proof of current or former address if the institution requests it.
  • The certificate, statement, tax form or other account clue.
  • A completed claim form, affidavit or notarized statement if required.

If the owner is deceased

  1. Confirm that the database record matches the deceased owner’s name and address history.
  2. Obtain the death certificate and determine who is legally authorized to claim the property.
  3. Gather probate, executor, administrator, trust or small-estate documents applicable to the estate.
  4. Provide documents linking the claimant to the estate or showing heirship, as the state or FDIC requests.
  5. Submit only copies or certified copies in the format required, and keep a complete submission record.

Being a relative does not automatically establish a right to the funds. The agency may require formal estate authority even when the family relationship is obvious.

What to do when no search produces a match

A blank result is not conclusive. Work through the possible explanations rather than repeating the same search unchanged.

  • Name variation: Search initials, former surnames, punctuation changes and likely misspellings.
  • Wrong property label: Try savings, matured time deposit, time deposit and other financial-institution categories.
  • Wrong geography: Search every state of residence or business activity, not only the branch state.
  • Successor mismatch: Ask the current bank to search merger and legacy systems using the old institution’s name.
  • Timing: If the account has not reached the applicable dormancy period, it may remain with the bank rather than the state.
  • Closed account: The CD may have been redeemed, withdrawn or closed before it became unclaimed property.
  • Failed-bank route: Search the FDIC database separately; a state database will not necessarily show every failed-bank record.

Ask each institution what date range and systems it searched. “No record found” is more useful when you know whether the search covered the original bank, successor records, dormant accounts and archived documents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision path

  1. Organize clues: names, addresses, bank names, dates, amounts and certificate or check numbers.
  2. Trace the institution: use FDIC Bank Find to determine whether it is open, merged or failed.
  3. Request bank records: contact the current institution or successor with all historical identifiers.
  4. Search all relevant states: use each state’s official database and MissingMoney.com.
  5. Search FDIC records: do this when the bank failed, using name, check number and filters.
  6. Verify timing: check the applicable state’s current dormancy and reporting rules.
  7. Assemble proof: provide identity documents, address history and estate or heirship evidence when required.
  8. Track the claim: save reference numbers, copies, mailing receipts and written responses.

Avoid unnecessary fees and scams

Official state searches are free. FDIC Consumer News states: “However, you do not need anyone’s help to search the state for your unclaimed property, and you do not need a service to help you make a claim; anyone who tells you otherwise may be trying to take advantage of you.” Be cautious of anyone demanding an upfront payment, asking for banking credentials or claiming a guaranteed recovery.

Use the official state or FDIC instructions, verify the mailing address independently and send only the documents requested. Never share online-banking passwords, one-time codes or unrelated account information to pursue an old CD.

What a successful recovery usually requires

A claim is strongest when three facts line up: the claimant’s identity, the owner or account record and the legal right to receive the proceeds. For an owner, that generally means identity and name continuity. For an heir, it means identity plus documents establishing authority or heirship. A database match without those documents can still be useful, but it does not complete the claim.

Also distinguish the principal from the original certificate terms. An institution or state may calculate the payable amount under its records and applicable rules, rather than simply paying the number printed on an old paper certificate. Ask the custodian how it determined the amount and what date controls the claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to stop searching

Stop treating the certificate as an active asset only after the responsible institutions have addressed the plausible paths: the current or successor bank, the FDIC if applicable and every relevant state unclaimed-property office. If all confirm that the CD was closed or redeemed and no unclaimed property exists, the physical certificate is historical evidence rather than proof of a recoverable balance.

Keep the written responses with the estate or financial records. If a later statement, tax form or bank correspondence appears, restart the search with that new identifier instead of assuming the earlier result was final.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I find a CD using only the certificate number?

Sometimes, but not always. State and FDIC searches may rely on the owner’s name or a check number, and a successor bank may have changed account numbers. Search by name, former names, addresses and bank history as well as the certificate number.

Does a bank’s failure mean the FDIC will automatically pay the CD?

No. The FDIC database may identify an unclaimed-funds record, but payment still requires an eligible claimant and the identity or heirship documents specified in the FDIC instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should I check a state database for an old CD?

Check after gathering new name, address or bank information and whenever the applicable state updates its records. Dormancy and reporting rules vary, so a missing result today does not prove that no record will appear later.
