Use three official routes together: search the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) when you have a bench and case number, search the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) public-announcement listing by corporate-debtor name, and use eCourts when you have a party name or another case identifier. These systems expose different records, so a single “no result” is not proof that no insolvency proceeding exists.
Which official source should you use?
The quickest route depends on the identifier you already have and the kind of evidence you need. NCLT is the direct tribunal-tracking route for a known case. IBBI is useful for public notices connected with corporate insolvency resolution or voluntary liquidation. eCourts provides additional case-status search modes, including party-name searches.

| Source | Useful for | What to search or inspect | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| NCLT case-number search and Case History | Tribunal case tracking, hearings, interim orders, judgments and associated applications | Bench, case type, CP number and year; then Case History | The search interface uses a CAPTCHA, and the public page does not say it is a universal company-name index. |
| IBBI public announcements | Public notices for Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) and voluntary liquidation | Corporate-debtor name; announcement type and date; applicant, insolvency professional and linked notice | A notice records the announcement it carries; it is not necessarily the latest event in the tribunal case. |
| eCourts case status | An additional case-search path when party or case identifiers are known | Party name, case number, filing number, advocate, FIR number, act type or case type, depending on the search screen | State, district or court selections may apply; CAPTCHA is required, and a general party-name search should not be assumed to cover every NCLT record. |
Think of the portals as complementary records rather than competing answers. A tribunal history, a public announcement and a later order are different pieces of evidence. For a decision involving money, a contract or a claim, preserve the underlying order or notice and compare dates before describing the company’s status.

- Exact corporate-debtor name: copy the spelling used in the filing or public announcement. Include punctuation and suffixes such as “Private Limited” when shown.
- NCLT case details: record the bench, case type, CP number and year. A known case number is more reliable than a partial name.
- Other case identifiers: retain a filing number, registration year, party name, advocate name or case type if those are all you have.
- Documents: save the actual order, public notice or announcement PDF and note its date. A search result without the linked document can be easy to misread.
Use the legal entity’s registered name, not only a trading name or brand. If the company has subsidiaries, former names or similarly named affiliates, keep each possibility in a separate note so that you can test identity rather than treating every matching result as the same debtor.
How to check an NCLT case when you know the case number
NCLT’s case-number page is the most direct starting point for a known tribunal matter. It asks for four case fields and a CAPTCHA.
- Open the NCLT case-number search page. Select the relevant bench.
- Choose the case type. Use the type shown on the filing or order rather than guessing from the company’s business activity.
- Enter the CP number. Keep the number exactly as it appears, including leading digits if the record shows them.
- Enter the year. Use the year attached to that case number, not the year of a later hearing or announcement.
- Complete the CAPTCHA and submit. If the result opens, check the parties, case number, bench and dates before treating it as the company’s matter.
Use Case History when the ordinary status search is difficult
The NCLT page identifies Case History as an alternative path for tracking status and viewing documents. Its wording says: “Please check “Case History”, an alternative option to Track case status, View List of Hearings, Interim Orders, Judgement, Associated Applications etc., if facing any problem while using case status or judgement search.”
Open the history associated with the matching matter and review the chronology, not just the latest label. Look for hearing entries, interim orders, judgments and associated applications. Record the date of each material event and download or retain the order whenever the portal provides it.

What an NCLT result can and cannot establish
A matching NCLT record establishes that the tribunal system contains that case entry. It does not, by itself, tell you that a particular public announcement is the latest event, that every related application is resolved, or that a company-wide search has found all matters involving the entity. Verify the legal name and bench, then read the relevant order or history entry.
How to search IBBI public announcements by company name
IBBI’s public-announcement listing is the most useful official route when you know the corporate debtor’s name but do not have an NCLT case number. The listing includes announcements for Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process and voluntary liquidation.
- Search the corporate debtor’s exact name. Start with the spelling used in the notice, then try a shorter distinctive portion if the exact search returns nothing.
- Filter or inspect the announcement category. Distinguish a CIRP announcement from a voluntary-liquidation announcement; they are different notice types.
- Read the date and parties. Note the announcement date, applicant and named insolvency professional shown in the listing.
- Open the linked notice. Preserve the notice and check the legal entity name, address, dates and any case reference inside it.
- Move to NCLT records for later events. Use any case number or bench found in the notice to inspect the tribunal history and subsequent orders.
Why an announcement is not a complete case status
An IBBI entry documents the announcement that was published. It may be the first public notice you find, while the tribunal record may contain later hearings, interim directions, a judgment or related applications. Do not describe the announcement date as the current status date unless the underlying records support that conclusion.

How to use eCourts when the NCLT number is missing
eCourts offers several search modes. Depending on the page and selections, you can search by petitioner or respondent, case number, filing number, advocate, FIR number, act type or case type. This makes it a useful second route when the only clue is a party name or an alternative identifier.
Party-name search
- Choose the relevant state, district and court selections where the page asks for them. These choices limit which records are searched.
- Enter at least three characters of the party name. Use the legal company name or the distinctive portion shown in the document.
- Enter the registration year. The party-name search requires a year; use the year attached to the case registration.
- Select the status scope. If you do not know whether the matter is pending or disposed, choose “Both.” The official instruction states: “If you don’t know the exact status of the Case, then click on the Both option button.”
- Complete the CAPTCHA and submit. Open a result’s “View” or “Case History” and compare the parties, case number and dates with your documents.
Search by another identifier
If you have a case number or filing number, use that field rather than relying on a broad name search. Advocate, FIR, act-type and case-type searches can provide additional paths when the record was filed under a party name that differs slightly from the company’s trading name.
Interpreting an eCourts result
eCourts is a court-service case-status interface. A result is evidence of the entry returned by the selected court and search criteria. Check the “View/Case History” information and the underlying order where available. Do not assume that a party-name result exhaustively lists all NCLT proceedings involving the company.

How to reconcile NCLT, IBBI and eCourts records
When the portals show different dates or labels, use a repeatable identity-and-date check rather than choosing the most convenient result.

- Confirm the entity. Match the complete legal name and, where shown, address or other identifying details. Separate similarly named companies and group entities.
- Match the case. Compare the NCLT bench, case type, CP number and year with the number or reference in the IBBI notice or eCourts history.
- Build a chronology. Put the announcement date, hearing dates, interim orders and judgments in date order. Keep the date tied to the event it describes.
- Read the operative document. A linked notice or order can contain qualifications that are not visible in a search-result row.
- State only what the records establish. For example, you can report that an IBBI CIRP announcement dated a particular day was found and that an NCLT history shows a later listed event. Avoid converting those facts into a broader conclusion unless the later order supports it.
This approach matters because “insolvency,” “CIRP,” “liquidation,” “pending” and “disposed” describe different record contexts. A public announcement, tribunal case entry and court-service status are not interchangeable labels.

Try the other official route
A no-result response is inconclusive. NCLT’s case-number search is not described as a universal company-name index; IBBI lists public announcements; and eCourts depends on the selected search mode and year. Run the name through IBBI, test the available case identifiers in NCLT and use eCourts with the party-name or filing-number route.
Check spelling and legal-name variations
Remove accidental spaces, test the full legal name and then a distinctive three-character-or-more fragment for eCourts. Check former names, abbreviations and suffixes against the source document. Do not merge two similarly named entities merely because both return results.

Recheck the year and number
A correct CP number paired with the wrong year can produce no result. The same applies to eCourts party-name searches, which require a registration year. Verify whether the year in your document is the registration year, filing year or announcement year.

Allow for CAPTCHA and portal behavior
All three routes can involve CAPTCHA or required fields. A failed submission may reflect an incomplete field or an expired CAPTCHA rather than an absent case. Reload the official page, complete every required selection and submit again without changing the identifiers.
Escalate an important uncertainty
If the result affects a payment, transaction, employment decision or legal claim, preserve screenshots or downloaded documents with access dates and ask a qualified Indian insolvency professional or lawyer to interpret the order. The portals provide records; they do not replace advice on what a particular order means for your rights.
Practical search examples
You have only the company name
Start with the IBBI announcement listing using the exact corporate-debtor name. If you find a CIRP or voluntary-liquidation notice, record its date, applicant and insolvency professional and open the linked notice. Use any bench or case reference in that notice for an NCLT search. Then check eCourts with at least three characters, the registration year and “Both” if the status is unknown.
You have an NCLT case number
Begin with NCLT: select the bench and case type, enter the CP number and year, complete the CAPTCHA and open the result. Use Case History to inspect hearings, interim orders, judgments and associated applications. Search the company name in IBBI afterward to see whether a related public announcement is listed, but keep the announcement and tribunal chronology distinct.
You have a notice but no usable case number
Search the exact corporate-debtor name in IBBI and read the linked notice for a case reference, bench or insolvency-professional details. If the number remains unavailable, use eCourts with the party name and registration year, then test any filing number or other identifier printed on the notice. A missing match should lead to further cross-checking, not a conclusion that no case exists.
How to report a company’s status responsibly
When you communicate your finding to a lender, customer, supplier or colleague, identify the record and its date. A careful note should say which portal was searched, which identifier matched, what document was opened and the date of the event. Distinguish “an IBBI public announcement was found” from “the latest NCLT order says…” because those statements rely on different evidence.
- Name the entity precisely: use the corporate debtor’s legal name as shown in the source.
- Name the record: identify the NCLT case history, IBBI announcement or eCourts entry.
- Give the event date: separate announcement, hearing and order dates.
- Keep the document: retain the linked notice or order used for the conclusion.
- Describe uncertainty: if one portal returned nothing or records conflict, say that further verification is required.
A portal’s live data can change, and the official pages checked on 13 October 2026 may have different labels or layouts later. Reopen the current official page and inspect the date and underlying record before calling a status current.
