For most regular taxpayers in India, filing a GST return means reporting sales in GSTR-1, reporting tax liability and eligible input tax credit (ITC) in GSTR-3B, and checking the read-only GSTR-2B statement before claiming credit. Start by confirming the GSTIN, taxpayer category, tax period and filing frequency shown on the GST Portal. Then prepare the return from reconciled books, validate every invoice and tax amount, submit it, and complete authentication with DSC or EVC as permitted.
The ordinary GSTR-1 deadline is the 11th of the succeeding month for monthly filers and the 13th after the quarter ends for quarterly filers. Government notifications can extend those dates, so the due-date tile for your selected period is the controlling reference. GSTR-3B deadlines vary by taxpayer and period and must also be checked on the portal.

What each GST form does
Choosing the right form and understanding how the forms connect prevents many filing errors. The following applies mainly to normal and casual registered taxpayers within the scope of GSTR-1; composition taxpayers and other excluded categories have different obligations.
| Form or facility | Purpose | What you must do |
|---|---|---|
| GSTR-1 | Reports outward supplies (sales), including invoice-level and summary details. | File monthly or quarterly, as applicable, even when the period has no business activity. |
| GSTR-3B | Declares tax payable and ITC used to discharge that liability. | Report figures after reconciling books, GSTR-2B and required reversals; pay any balance tax. |
| GSTR-2B | “An auto-drafted ITC statement” generated from suppliers’ filings. It is read-only and is not a return to file. | Match it with purchase records, establish eligibility, avoid duplicates and record reversals or reverse-charge tax where required. |
| GSTR-1A | Optional same-period amendment facility. | Use it once, after GSTR-1 is filed or its due date has passed (whichever is later) and before filing that period’s GSTR-3B, if the facility is available. |
GSTR-1 data gives recipients visibility of your reported invoices. GSTR-3B is the return in which your net tax and ITC position are declared. A mismatch between sales records, GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B can create notices, cash-flow surprises or recipient disputes.

Confirm your filing frequency and deadlines
Before entering data, identify whether the GSTIN files monthly or under the Quarterly Return Monthly Payment (QRMP) scheme. The portal’s Returns Dashboard displays the periods applicable to that GSTIN and the due date for the period selected. Treat the dates below as ordinary rules, not as permission to ignore a later notification.
| Filing pattern | Ordinary GSTR-1 timing | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | By the 11th of the succeeding month | Check the selected-period dashboard for any extension or special instruction. |
| Quarterly under QRMP | By the 13th after the quarter ends | Eligible taxpayers still pay tax monthly and must follow the portal’s election and payment windows. |
| IFF for QRMP taxpayers | Ordinary save/submit window closes on the 13th of the succeeding month for the first two months of a quarter | IFF is optional and covers specified B2B invoice and note tables; remaining supplies go in the quarterly GSTR-1. |
The Goods and Services Tax Portal FAQ accessed on 13 October 2026 describes QRMP eligibility as aggregate annual turnover up to ₹5 crore, subject to conditions. Eligibility and opt-in or opt-out windows can change, and different GSTINs under the same PAN can have different status. The portal’s current notice for each GSTIN controls.
How to choose monthly filing or QRMP
- Monthly filing generally suits businesses with frequent invoices, high transaction volume or customers that need early invoice visibility every month.
- QRMP reduces the number of full returns for eligible taxpayers, but requires monthly tax-payment work and disciplined quarterly reconciliation.
- IFF can provide selected B2B invoices to customers during the first two months of a QRMP quarter. Because filed IFF invoices flow into recipient statements, missing its window can affect a customer that is waiting to see an invoice for its own ITC process.
Do not choose a frequency solely to reduce return-count. Compare your turnover, transaction pattern, monthly payment workload and customers’ need for timely invoice visibility, then confirm that the GST Portal permits the election.

Prepare records before opening the return
Use a period-close checklist before uploading or typing figures. Preparation outside the portal makes validation faster and leaves an audit trail.
- Confirm the correct GSTIN, legal name, financial year, month or quarter and whether the GSTIN is monthly or QRMP.
- Close the sales register and purchase register for the exact tax period. Separate registered-customer invoices, consumer supplies, exports, deemed exports, advances, credit notes, debit notes, amendments, and nil-rated, exempt or non-GST supplies.
- For every registered recipient, verify the GSTIN and confirm that it was active on the invoice date. An inactive or invalid GSTIN for that date can cause rejection or misreporting.
- Check invoice dates, invoice numbers, place-of-supply treatment, taxable value, rate and tax amount. Enter monetary values to two decimal places, as required by portal guidance.
- Prepare HSN/SAC summaries and reconcile totals to the general ledger and tax invoices.
- Collect source documents for purchases and compare them with GSTR-2B before deciding what ITC is eligible for GSTR-3B.
- Keep access to the registered mobile number and email, and ensure the authorised signatory can complete DSC or EVC authentication.
How to file GSTR-1 on the GST Portal
- Open the correct return period. Sign in to the GST Portal and go to Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard. Select the financial year, quarter and month, then search for the period. Recheck the GSTIN and period before loading data.
- Read the due-date tile and notices. The dashboard shows the applicable due date for that period. Use it together with any current government extension or portal notice; an ordinary calendar date is only a baseline.
- Select a preparation method. Enter records online, or prepare them with the GST Portal’s offline tool and upload the generated data. The official FAQ also recognises third-party application-service-provider software connected through GST Suvidha Providers as a preparation route. Regardless of method, you remain responsible for the submitted figures.
- Enter registered-recipient supplies. Report invoice-level details for B2B supplies and other tables that apply to your transactions. Match each GSTIN, invoice number, date, taxable value, rate and tax amount to the sales register.
- Report special and summary supplies. Include applicable inter-state supplies to unregistered consumers, exports, deemed exports, advances, credit and debit notes, amendments, and nil-rated, exempt and non-GST supplies. Complete the HSN/SAC summary for the period.
- Run validations and resolve errors. Generate the portal summary and inspect upload or validation messages. Correct table placement, duplicate invoice numbers, invalid recipient GSTINs, date errors, tax-rate inconsistencies and rounding differences in the source file, then upload or save again. The portal’s two-decimal rule applies to invoice value, taxable value and tax amounts.
- Preview, submit and authenticate. Preview the complete return, compare its totals with your books, submit it, and finish filing with DSC or EVC as the portal allows for the authorised signatory. Download or save the filed return and confirm that the period status says Filed, not merely saved or submitted.
Checks that deserve a second review
- Compare the total taxable value and tax by rate with the sales ledger and tax-control accounts.
- Trace every credit or debit note to the original invoice and verify whether it is an amendment or a new document for the period.
- Check that exports and deemed exports are in the applicable tables and that consumer supplies are classified by place of supply.
- Confirm that exempt, nil-rated and non-GST turnover is not accidentally included in taxable turnover.
- Review the generated summary after all uploads; a technically successful upload can still contain a business classification error.
Prepare GSTR-3B and claim ITC from GSTR-2B safely
GSTR-2B is a read-only statement, not an approval to claim every displayed amount. It is generated from supplier data and must be reconciled to your books and source documents.
- Download or view GSTR-2B for the same period. Identify invoices, debit notes and credit notes shown by suppliers.
- Match each item to your purchase register. Investigate invoices missing from GSTR-2B, items present in the statement but absent from your books, duplicate documents and supplier or GSTIN errors.
- Test eligibility. Exclude credit that is blocked, unsupported, attributable to non-business use or otherwise disallowed under the applicable rules. Record the evidence for your decision.
- Calculate reversals and reverse-charge tax. Make all temporary or permanent reversals required by the rules, and separately account for reverse-charge liability and the related credit treatment.
- Review the auto-populated GSTR-3B summary. Portal values can be edited. The system flags edited fields, so inspect every highlighted change against your reconciliation rather than accepting a prefilled number automatically.
- Complete the return and payment. Enter outward tax, eligible ITC, reversals and other required figures, verify the net liability, pay any amount due and file using the portal’s permitted authentication method.
Do not duplicate an invoice merely because it appears in more than one internal report, and do not claim credit solely because a supplier document appears in GSTR-2B. The books, tax invoice, eligibility rules and reconciliation together support the amount reported.

Can you file a nil GST return?
Nil GSTR-1
Yes. A registered taxpayer within GSTR-1’s scope must file a nil GSTR-1 for a period with no reportable outward activity. “No sales” is not a reason to leave the return pending. Open the correct period, use the portal’s nil option or zero-entry workflow, submit and authenticate, then verify the Filed status.
Nil GSTR-3B
A nil GSTR-3B is narrower. The portal’s checks require no outward supply, no inward supply and no tax liability, along with no auto-populated data, no manual entries, no interest and no late-fee liability. If any of those conditions is not met, the return may need figures rather than a nil declaration. Review the portal prompts for the selected period before choosing the nil route.
Correcting an error after GSTR-1
Use GSTR-1A when the window is open
GSTR-1A is an optional same-period amendment facility. It becomes available after GSTR-1 is filed or after its due date, whichever is later, and remains open until that period’s GSTR-3B is filed. It can be filed only once for the period. Changes flow into GSTR-3B, so reconcile the revised figures before filing that return.
Rank #4
First identify the error—wrong GSTIN, invoice value, tax rate, omitted invoice, credit note or table classification—then check whether GSTR-1A is visible for the period. If it is available, amend only the affected records, regenerate the summary, verify the downstream GSTR-3B effect and file the amendment. If the window is closed, follow the correction mechanism available for the relevant return period and current portal instructions instead of attempting to overwrite a filed return.
Previous-financial-year corrections
The portal FAQ describes a 30 November cut-off in the following financial year for GSTR-1 corrections relating to the prior financial year. Statutory provisions and notifications can change, so confirm the cut-off and any exception for the year involved before relying on it.

Common mistakes and how to prevent them
| Mistake | Why it causes trouble | Prevention or recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Using the wrong period or frequency | Invoices can be reported in the wrong return, and an expected filing may appear missing. | At the start of every session, verify GSTIN, financial year, month or quarter and QRMP status on the Returns Dashboard. |
| Assuming no activity means no filing | Required nil returns remain overdue and can create compliance restrictions. | File nil GSTR-1 when applicable; use nil GSTR-3B only when the portal’s stricter conditions are satisfied. |
| Typing an invalid recipient GSTIN | The recipient may not receive usable invoice data, and the portal can reject a GSTIN that was inactive on the invoice date. | Validate the GSTIN and its status for the actual invoice date before upload. |
| Omitting adjustments | Credit/debit notes, advances, exports, amendments or exempt supplies can make return totals differ from the ledger. | Reconcile each adjustment category to source documents and the correct table before generating the summary. |
| Rounding or transcribing inconsistently | Small differences can trigger validation errors or leave tax-control accounts unreconciled. | Use two decimal digits for invoice, taxable and tax values and compare the generated summary with the books. |
| Treating GSTR-2B as a return or unquestionable approval | It can lead to duplicate, ineligible or unsupported ITC claims. | Match every item to books and documents, apply eligibility rules, and record reversals and reverse-charge entries. |
| Accepting auto-populated GSTR-3B figures without review | Prefilled data can be incomplete or unsuitable for your books; edits are flagged by the portal. | Compare the system summary with your reconciliation and investigate every highlighted edit. |
| Waiting until after the correction window | GSTR-1A is one-time and closes before same-period GSTR-3B filing. | Review the filed GSTR-1 promptly and use GSTR-1A while it is available. |
| Filing out of sequence | Unfiled prior-period returns can block later GSTR-1 or GSTR-3B filings under portal rules. | Clear pending periods first and read the portal’s specific restriction or notice for the GSTIN. |
When a later return is blocked
If the portal will not open a current GSTR-1 or GSTR-3B, check the return history for earlier unfiled periods, unpaid liabilities, failed authentication or a compliance notice. File or otherwise resolve the oldest pending return first, then refresh the dashboard. Do not assume that a later period can be filed independently merely because its statutory date has arrived; portal dependencies can control the sequence.

Records to retain after filing
- Keep the filed return, ARN or acknowledgement, downloaded summaries and payment challans with the period’s sales and purchase registers.
- Retain invoice copies, credit and debit notes, export or deemed-export evidence, reconciliation workpapers and explanations for ITC reversals.
- Record who reviewed the return, who authenticated it and when corrections were considered.
- Protect portal credentials, DSC tokens and EVC access. Restrict them to authorised personnel and avoid sharing sign-in details through unsecured channels.
These records make it possible to explain a mismatch, support an ITC position and reconstruct the figures if a supplier later changes its filing.
Practical filing checklist
- GSTIN, taxpayer category, financial year, period and filing frequency confirmed.
- Dashboard due date and current notices checked.
- Sales, purchase and tax ledgers closed for the same period.
- Recipient GSTINs checked for validity on invoice dates.
- Invoices, exports, advances, notes, amendments and exempt or non-GST supplies mapped to the correct tables.
- Amounts entered to two decimal places and totals reconciled.
- GSTR-2B matched to books; duplicate, ineligible and reversal items removed.
- Auto-populated GSTR-3B values reviewed and any edits explained.
- Return previewed, submitted, authenticated and downloaded.
- Filed status verified and correction windows noted for the next review.
The Bottom Line
File the return for the correct GSTIN and period, report every applicable outward-supply category in GSTR-1, reconcile GSTR-2B before entering ITC in GSTR-3B, and verify the portal’s due date and filing status. Nil periods still require the appropriate filing, while GSTR-1A offers only a limited, one-time same-period correction window.
