If the interest credited on your Indian fixed deposit (FD) looks wrong, begin with the bank—not the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Reconcile the fixed-deposit receipt, actual deposit and closure dates, applicable rate, calculation method, premature-withdrawal terms and tax deduction. Then submit a written complaint through the bank’s grievance channel and preserve proof of delivery. Under the RBI’s current Reserve Bank–Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, you can generally approach RBI’s Complaint Management System (CMS) after an unsatisfactory bank reply or no reply within 30 days, provided the entity and complaint qualify and you meet the filing limit.

The 2026 scheme took effect on July 1, 2026. A matter filed before that date, an appeal connected with the earlier scheme, or enforcement of an award under the earlier scheme may remain governed by the 2021 rules. The dates of your bank complaint and RBI filing therefore matter.

First decide whether there is an interest shortfall

An advertised FD rate is not enough to prove an underpayment. The amount due depends on the product terms and the exact period for which the deposit remained with the bank. Assemble the receipt, statements and terms before alleging an error.

Documents to put beside one another

  • Fixed-deposit receipt or advice showing principal, booking date, tenure, due date, interest rate and renewal instructions.
  • Account statement showing the maturity proceeds, interest credit or premature-closure payment.
  • The rate card and premature-withdrawal terms that applied when the FD was opened, not merely the bank’s current rate.
  • Any renewal, closure or payout instruction and the date the bank acted on it.
  • Tax records or certificates showing tax withheld, where applicable.
  • Earlier emails, letters, branch acknowledgements and complaint reference numbers.

Keep the original files unchanged and make a working copy for calculations. Do not send passwords, one-time passcodes, PINs or complete card credentials in a complaint.

Reconcile the key fields

Check What to compare Why it can change the amount
Principal Amount on the receipt versus amount actually debited from your account A different principal produces a different interest figure.
Tenure and dates Booking date, contractual maturity date and actual closure or payout date A few days, an early closure or a renewal can change the applicable period and rate.
Rate Rate printed on the receipt and the rate applicable to the actual period under the bank’s terms The contracted full-term rate may not apply after premature closure.
Day-count method The method disclosed by the bank and the number of days used RBI guidance refers to actual days for certain short or incomplete periods and to a 365-day year, with 366 days possible in a leap year.
Deductions Gross interest, tax withheld and any disclosed charge A net credit can be lower than gross interest without an interest-calculation error.
Overdue or renewal period What happened after maturity and what instruction the bank received The post-maturity treatment may differ from the original FD terms.

Prepare a one-page reconciliation with the principal, every relevant date, each rate, the bank’s stated method, gross interest expected, tax or charge, amount credited and the difference. Mark any figure you cannot verify as an estimate. The purpose is to identify a specific discrepancy the bank can check, rather than to demand an amount based only on a headline rate.

How RBI guidance affects the calculation

Receipt and disclosure requirements

RBI customer-service guidance says a term-deposit receipt should state the deposit date, period, due date, applicable interest rate and other relevant details. Banks should disclose their interest-calculation method to depositors and display it at branches. Use the method stated for your product and period; do not substitute a calculator’s default convention without asking the bank to explain the difference.

Actual-day calculations for short or incomplete periods

For domestic term deposits repayable in less than three months, or for an incomplete terminal quarter, the guidance cites proportionate interest for the actual number of days using a 365-day year. It also notes that a bank may use a 366-day count in a leap year and 365 days in other years. That does not mean every FD is calculated identically: the receipt, product terms and applicable directions control the particular account. Ask the bank to identify the day-count basis and the exact number of days used.

Premature closure

If you close an FD before maturity, do not assume the original full-tenure rate remains payable. RBI’s guidance says:

“While prematurely closing a deposit, interest on the deposit for the period that it has remained with the bank will be paid at the rate applicable to the period for which the deposit remained with the bank and not at the contracted rate.”

The bank may also impose a premature-withdrawal penalty if its terms permit one. The applicable penalty should be made known along with the deposit rate. Compare the actual closure date, the rate for the shorter period and the disclosed penalty. Ask the bank to show each item separately instead of presenting one unexplained net amount.

Tax withholding is a separate line item

Interest can be calculated correctly while the amount credited to your account is lower because tax was withheld. Request the gross-interest figure, the tax amount and the basis for the deduction. Reconcile the tax entry with your tax certificate or account statement before treating the net credit as an FD-rate dispute.

Step 1: Build a written case file

A clear record makes both the bank review and any later RBI filing easier. Create a chronology with the date, event and evidence for each step.

  1. Record when the FD was booked, the principal, receipt number, tenure, rate and maturity date.
  2. Record every renewal instruction, maturity instruction, withdrawal request and the date it was received.
  3. Record the actual interest credit, closure proceeds, tax withholding and any charge.
  4. Calculate the amount you believe is due using the receipt and terms. Show the formula, day count and rates used; label assumptions.
  5. List the precise remedy: a recalculation, correction of the account, refund of an incorrectly deducted amount, and a written calculation sheet.

Use a neutral description such as “The receipt shows [rate], but the statement credits [amount]. Please provide the applicable rate, day-count basis, dates used and any penalty or tax calculation.” Do not accuse an employee of misconduct unless you have evidence; the objective is an auditable response.

Step 2: Complain to the bank first

Submit the complaint through the bank’s stated grievance channel or branch process. If you visit a branch, hand over a dated letter and request an acknowledgement. If you use an online form or email, save the confirmation page, sent message, attachments and any reference number. For postal delivery, retain the receipt and tracking result.

What your complaint should contain

  • Your name and contact details registered with the bank.
  • Branch, account and FD identifiers, showing only the minimum information needed for identification.
  • Deposit date, maturity or closure date, principal and receipt number.
  • Expected-versus-credited calculation in a small table or numbered list.
  • Copies of the receipt, statement, applicable terms and tax record, with sensitive credentials removed.
  • The date and channel of any earlier request.
  • The remedy requested and a request for a written explanation.

Ask the bank to provide its calculation sheet, the rate used for the actual period, the day-count convention, the dates counted, any premature-closure penalty and any tax deduction. Request correction if the bank confirms an error. Keep the full submission and proof of delivery; a telephone conversation alone is difficult to establish later.

Suggested complaint wording

“I dispute the interest credited to FD receipt [identifier]. The receipt records principal [amount], booking date [date], maturity date [date] and rate [rate]. The statement shows [amount] credited on [date], while my calculation, using [method], is [amount]. Please provide the dates, rate, day-count basis, gross interest, tax and penalty used; correct any error; and send a written decision. Please acknowledge this complaint with a reference number.”

Step 3: Know when RBI escalation is available

RBI’s current FAQ for the Reserve Bank–Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026 describes escalation when the regulated entity has not replied within 30 days or when its reply is unsatisfactory. If the bank replies earlier and you are dissatisfied, the FAQ says you may proceed without waiting for the full 30 days. Confirm that your bank or other entity is covered before filing.

Bank response What to do
No response Wait until the 30-day response threshold described in the current FAQ, then consider CMS if the entity is covered and the complaint is otherwise maintainable.
Response received but unsatisfactory Review the calculation and explanation. You may approach CMS without waiting for 30 days, according to the current FAQ.
Response resolves the issue Verify the corrected credit and retain the closure message and statement.
Entity not covered or issue outside the scheme CMS may not be the correct route. Check the current FAQ and the bank’s other grievance or legal channels.

The ombudsman process is a cost-free alternate grievance mechanism for complaints about deficiency in service by covered regulated entities. It is not a guaranteed award and does not remove the need to establish the facts, satisfy maintainability rules or comply with limitation periods.

Step 4: File through RBI’s Complaint Management System

When the escalation point is met, use the RBI CMS portal identified in the current 2026 FAQ. Enter the information in date order and make the calculation dispute easy to follow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the regulated entity, branch or service involved and the FD or account reference.
  2. State when you first complained to the bank, how you submitted it and the bank’s reference number.
  3. State whether the bank replied, the reply date and why the response does not resolve the calculation.
  4. Explain the principal, dates, rates, day-count method, gross interest, tax or penalty and amount in dispute.
  5. State the remedy sought, such as a recalculation and correction supported by the applicable terms.
  6. Attach the receipt, statement, terms, complaint proof, bank reply and relevant tax records. Name files clearly and redact passwords, PINs and unnecessary credentials.
  7. Submit the complaint and save the CMS acknowledgement, complaint number and every subsequent message.

Write only verifiable facts. If a rate or date is uncertain, say which document is missing and ask RBI to obtain the bank’s calculation. Do not inflate the claim by treating an estimated amount as established.

Step 5: Track the filing limit and appeal timing

The current RBI FAQ describes different complaint limits depending on whether the regulated entity replied:

Situation Limit described in the 2026 FAQ
The bank sent a reply File within one year after receiving the reply.
No reply to your representation File within one year and 30 days after the date you made the representation.

Keep evidence of the date you received a reply and the date you submitted the original representation. Do not wait for informal promises if the limitation date is approaching. A complaint made before July 1, 2026 may be subject to the transition rules for the 2021 scheme rather than the 2026 scheme.

Appealing an award

The current FAQ describes a 30-day period to appeal an award, with a possible extension of up to a further 30 days for sufficient cause. Appeal availability depends on the type of outcome. Read the decision notice and the current FAQ carefully before assuming an appeal is available, and preserve the date on which the decision was received.

How the 2021-to-2026 transition changes the analysis

The Reserve Bank–Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026 became effective on July 1, 2026 and replaced the 2021 scheme for new matters. The 2021 scheme continues to govern complaints received before that date, related appeals under the earlier scheme and execution of awards under it. Determine both dates: when you complained to the bank and when the RBI matter was received. Do not apply the 2026 deadlines automatically to an older case.

Common reasons an FD credit looks lower

Premature closure

The shorter actual holding period may attract a different rate and a disclosed penalty. Compare the closure date and applicable shorter-tenure rate with the receipt.

Day-count convention

A short period or incomplete quarter may be calculated by actual days. Leap-year treatment can use 366 days where the bank’s disclosed method provides for it. Ask for the exact day count rather than assuming a monthly convention.

Tax deduction

The statement may show net interest after withholding. Obtain the gross figure and tax record separately.

Renewal or maturity instructions

An FD renewed for a new period is not necessarily governed by the original rate. Check the instruction and the rate applicable on the renewal date.

Overdue period

Money left after maturity may be treated under the product’s overdue or post-maturity terms. Ask the bank which terms it applied and for which dates.

Data or posting error

A wrong principal, date, rate or posting entry can produce a genuine shortfall. This is why the receipt, statement and bank calculation should be compared field by field.

What RBI escalation can and cannot deliver

  • It can: provide a cost-free alternate channel for a qualifying deficiency-in-service complaint against a covered regulated entity, after the bank-first condition and filing requirements are met.
  • It cannot be presented as: an automatic interest award, a replacement for checking the receipt and terms, or a route that bypasses limitation, coverage and maintainability rules.
  • Your strongest submission is: a dated chronology, a document-backed calculation, the bank’s response or proof of silence, and a precise remedy.

When to consider another route

If the entity is outside the RBI scheme, the issue is not a deficiency in service covered by it, or the limitation period has expired, CMS may not resolve the dispute. Follow the bank’s designated escalation process and obtain independent legal advice where the amount, facts or contractual interpretation warrants it. Do not abandon a potential court or statutory remedy merely because you submitted a bank complaint; check how any other route affects deadlines.
