Download and verify your account archive before you deactivate or delete anything. Start by recording your username, profile URL, recovery contacts, connected-app logins, drafts, saved items, and media stored only on your phone. Request the platform’s official data export while you are still signed in, select every relevant category and the widest date range, keep the original archive unchanged, test a working copy, and store two copies in different places. Only after that should you remove posts, cancel subscriptions, disconnect social logins, or close the account.
What to save before you leave
A social-network export is not a complete personal backup unless you check what the service actually supplies. Make an inventory before requesting anything so you can identify gaps.

Record account access and identity details
- Username, display name, profile URL and any profile handle you have used.
- Recovery email address and phone number, including whether you still control them.
- Connected-app and website logins that use the social account for authentication.
- Subscriptions, paid memberships, creator tools and other services billed through the account.
Save this information in a password manager or another protected location. An export may contain account history but is not a replacement for credentials you need to sign in elsewhere.

- Draft posts, unsent messages and temporary stories.
- Saved posts, bookmarks, collections, lists and items you have marked for later.
- Photos, videos, voice recordings and edited originals that exist only in a device app or cache.
- Private messages or group material that another participant posted and that the service may restrict in your copy.
Open the photo and video libraries on every phone, tablet and computer you have used. Copy originals from those devices separately; do not assume the platform export contains the highest-resolution local file.

Preserve relationships outside the platform
A follower or connection list often identifies accounts but does not provide a usable email address or phone number. Ask important contacts for an off-platform way to reach them before you leave. This is especially important for people you know only through a username, private group or direct messages.
Request the official export while you are signed in
Use the service’s own download or data-access feature, not a browser extension or an unverified “backup” service that asks for your password. Keep your recovery email and phone available: a platform may require a security check before preparing the archive.
Facebook and Instagram through Meta Accounts Center
Meta places Facebook and Instagram information downloads in Accounts Center. A combined request can retrieve information from both accounts at the same time. Meta product-management director Robert d’Apice described this centralization in an announcement dated October 17, 2023: “Download Your Information and Access Your Information are now centralized in Accounts Center, and you can now download information from both your Facebook and Instagram accounts at the same time.”

Open Accounts Center from the account settings, choose the information-download control, select each account you want included, and choose the complete categories and broadest date range available. Include posts, comments, messages, profile information, followers or following, saved items, contacts and account history when those categories appear. Instagram also supports transferring photos and videos to another service, which can create an additional off-device copy. Menu names and available categories can change, so inspect the generated archive rather than assuming a combined request contains every item from both accounts.
X
On X, use Settings and privacy → Your X data → Request data. X prepares a ZIP archive containing HTML and JSON files. Its Help description says the archive can include profile information, posts, Direct Messages, Moments, attached images, videos and GIFs, followers, following, the address book, Lists you created, joined or follow, inferred interest and demographic information, and information about ads you have seen or engaged with on X.

Confirm the email address or phone number on the account and request the archive from the same browser in which you are signed in. X says preparation may take a few days, so do not schedule account deletion immediately after submitting the request. When the download becomes available, retrieve it promptly and keep the original ZIP untouched.
LinkedIn’s path is Settings & Privacy → Data Privacy → Download your data. Select the largest or most complete download option and add individual categories when the page allows it. The listed categories include rich-media URLs, connections, contacts, comments, member follows, messages and shares.
Some individual categories may arrive within minutes. LinkedIn says a larger download is emailed within 24 hours, and the download link remains available for 72 hours. The feature is unavailable on mobile, so use a desktop browser. The export supplies your own data; some connection email addresses may be absent because the other member has chosen privacy restrictions. Save the files before the 72-hour window closes.
TikTok
TikTok’s official support describes requesting a copy of your data from the service. The exact in-app wording, category list and delivery timing can change, so follow the current data-copy control shown in your account rather than relying on an old menu path. Users in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom may also be able to authorize certain third-party transfers. Treat that transfer option as an additional copy, not as proof that every video, message or draft has been moved.
Because the available support result does not establish stable English labels or a universal delivery time, record the request date, watch for the notification, and check the resulting files and date range manually.

The official deletion guidance does not establish a general export workflow. If you need a personal copy, save your own posts, comments, media and messages while you can still access them, using the account’s available viewing or download controls and keeping an offline record. Do not infer that deletion will produce an archive.

When a service offers category checkboxes, choose everything relevant rather than only photos. A narrow date range can silently omit older material that you later remember needing.
- Content: posts, shares, comments, replies, stories, live recordings and captions.
- Media: photos, videos, GIFs, audio and any attached files. Check whether the export contains actual files or only URLs.
- Relationships: followers, following, friends, connections, member follows, groups and lists.
- Communication: direct messages, group messages, contact lists and address-book data.
- Account records: profile data, login and security history, settings, ads or inferred-interest information, and account activity.
- Personal organization: saved posts, bookmarks, collections, drafts and playlists where the platform exposes them.
Some services deliver rich-media links instead of files. A link is not a permanent backup: it can require you to remain signed in, expire, or stop working after account closure. Open representative links before leaving and download the underlying files when the archive does not include them.
Download, test and preserve the archive
- Keep the original. Download the ZIP or other package into a clearly named folder and make it read-only or otherwise avoid editing it. The original is useful if extraction fails.
- Extract a working copy. Work from a duplicate so that renaming, conversion or sorting cannot damage the source archive.
- Check the structure. Open several HTML pages, JSON files and folders. Confirm that the files are readable and that dates cover the period you requested.
- Test media. Open photos, videos, GIFs and audio from different years and devices. Play long and short videos, and check that filenames, timestamps and captions are present where expected.
- Compare against your inventory. Look for posts, messages, saved items, follower or connection lists, contacts and profile data you specifically selected. If a category is missing, request it again or save the material manually before deleting the account.
- Record delivery limits. Note when the archive was prepared and when its download link expires. LinkedIn’s larger-download link remains available for 72 hours; X may take a few days to prepare an archive.
Do not delete the account merely because a download button appeared. The decisive point is a successful test of the files in your possession.
Keep two independent copies
Store one verified copy on your computer and a second on a portable external SSD or reputable cloud storage. Keep the copies in different physical or service locations so a failed drive, lost device or locked account does not destroy both. Encrypt an external drive or use encrypted storage when the archive contains private messages, contact details or identity information.

Do not erase the only copy after opening a few files. Retain the untouched original ZIP, the extracted working copy and any manually saved media until you have confirmed that the archive meets your needs. A platform transfer, such as Instagram’s photo and video transfer to another service, can be useful as a third copy but should not replace a local backup you control.

Remove public material before deleting an account
Reddit’s deletion warning
Reddit states that deleting an account does not delete posts or comments you have made. If you need those contributions removed, delete or edit them first while you still have access. Reddit says the deletion or anonymization process commences within 90 days, and account deletion cannot be reactivated. That process does not make the content-removal decision for you: review your posts and comments before submitting the irreversible account deletion.
Other services
Do not assume that closing Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn or TikTok removes copies quoted, reshared or downloaded by other people. Review public posts, tagged material, comments, profile details and media that you want to take down, then use each service’s current deletion controls. Keep your verified archive first; deleting content can make it impossible to recover a missing item.

- Download and validate every requested archive.
- Copy device-only photos, videos, drafts and recordings.
- Ask priority contacts for email addresses or phone numbers outside the network.
- Delete posts, comments or messages that must not remain public, with Reddit requiring particular attention because account deletion does not remove them automatically.
- Cancel subscriptions and paid services.
- Replace social-login credentials on websites and apps that depend on the account.
- Remove connected applications and revoke their access.
- Sign out of shared or old devices and remove saved passwords where appropriate.
- Only then deactivate or permanently delete the social account.
Deactivation is usually a reversible pause, while deletion can remove access to account data. LinkedIn explicitly warns that closing the account removes access to account data. If you are undecided, keep the account deactivated until your two copies have been tested and your dependencies have been moved.

The download never arrives
Check the account’s recovery inbox, spam folder and notification center, then confirm that you requested the archive from a trusted, signed-in session. X may require several days. LinkedIn’s larger package can take up to 24 hours. If the platform allows a new request, submit it only after checking whether the first request is still processing; multiple overlapping requests can make it harder to identify the complete package.

The archive opens but media is missing
Look for a separate media folder, HTML links, or JSON records that point to files. Test a link while still signed in. If only links are supplied, download the media individually and preserve the original filenames and dates. Recheck that you selected the full date range and every media category.
Contacts or followers are not useful
A list of usernames is not equivalent to a contact list. Use direct messages or group announcements to ask important people for an off-platform address before you close the account. LinkedIn may omit connection email addresses when the other member has restricted sharing.
You cannot request LinkedIn data on a phone
Use a desktop browser; LinkedIn’s download feature is unavailable on mobile. After the email arrives, download the package before the 72-hour link window expires.

TikTok’s labels and availability can vary by region, and the cited support material does not establish a universal English path or delivery time. Save the request confirmation and verify the files rather than treating submission as completion.
