Use Character.AI’s built-in data export, then keep two protected copies of the downloaded archive. On the website, go to Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export Data. In the mobile app, go to Profile → Settings → Legal & Privacy → Export Data. Character.AI says processing can take 3–4 weeks; when the email arrives, its download link remains valid for 7 days.
Because the link expires and the export may include sensitive conversations and account information, download it promptly, preserve the original file unchanged, and create a second encrypted copy on separate storage. The export is useful for archiving and data portability, but Character.AI does not promise a one-click way to recreate your characters or import the conversations into another chatbot.

What Character.AI’s export does
The export is an account-data request rather than a live-chat sharing feature. Character.AI’s Help Center says the service sends an email with a download link after processing your request. The company’s privacy policy, updated October 29, 2025, describes rights that may apply by region, including access to personal data and the ability to “port your data to another provider.” That makes the download useful as an archive and portability record.
The published instructions do not promise a universal conversation format, a one-click import into another chatbot, or a copy of the interactive character experience. Treat the archive as your source record. If you later need readable excerpts, make those from a working copy rather than altering the original download.

Official export paths
From a web browser
- Sign in to Character.AI.
- Open Profile.
- Choose Profile Settings.
- Open Account.
- Select Manage Account & Data.
- Choose Export Data and submit the request.
These labels are from Character.AI’s current Help Center instructions. If the layout changes, look for the account-data or privacy area rather than assuming a chat’s overflow menu creates a full-account export.
From the mobile app
- Open the Character.AI app and sign in.
- Tap Profile.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Legal & Privacy.
- Tap Export Data and submit the request.
The web and app requests serve the same basic purpose. Choose whichever account you can access reliably and where you can monitor the email address associated with the account.
How long the request takes
Character.AI’s Help Center article “How do I download my data?”, updated October 8, 2026, states: “Your export may take 3-4 weeks to complete.” That is a processing estimate, not an instant-download promise. Plan as though you will wait the full period if you need the archive for an account change, device replacement, or other deadline.

The link is valid for 7 days after the email is sent. Check the inbox for the account, plus spam, junk, promotions, or quarantine folders used by your email provider. Add a calendar reminder to review the account during the waiting period, and another reminder to download immediately when the message arrives.
Download and preserve the archive
1. Confirm the message before downloading
Use the account email you recognize and inspect the destination before opening an attachment or link. If your provider displays the full destination, verify that it leads to Character.AI’s official download flow. Do not forward the link casually: anyone who possesses a still-valid link may be able to retrieve the archive.

2. Download before the seven-day deadline
Save the archive to a device you control as soon as the email arrives. Do not leave the only copy behind the expiring link. If the download is interrupted, start it again while the link is still valid. Keep the original filename and extension.
3. Keep an untouched original
Create a folder such as CharacterAI-export-original-2026-10 and place the downloaded file inside without editing, renaming its contents, or converting it. The date in the folder name is an organizational convention, not a Character.AI requirement. A preserved original gives you a stable reference if a converted copy becomes corrupted or loses metadata.

Duplicate the original before opening or converting it. Use the duplicate for searching, printing, copying selected conversations, or making a text or HTML reading version if the archive’s format permits it. Keep notes about any conversion so you can distinguish an edited presentation copy from the original account export.
Build a two-copy backup that does not depend on one device
A download on one laptop is not a backup strategy; it is one point of failure. A practical, low-cost arrangement is:
- Primary copy: the untouched archive on your computer or phone, in a folder that is included in your normal device backup.
- Separate copy: the same archive on a USB flash drive or external SSD, or in a reputable cloud-storage account.
- Readable copy: an optional text, HTML, or PDF selection created from the duplicate, kept with a note identifying the export date.
A 128GB USB flash drive is more than enough for many conversation archives and is a straightforward accessory for this purpose; the exact space required depends on what Character.AI includes in your account export. The drive is ordinary storage, not an official Character.AI accessory. If you use removable storage, eject it properly and keep it somewhere separate from the computer. A second physical location protects against theft, loss, or a failed device.

Cloud storage can provide geographic separation, but it introduces an account and security dependency. Review the provider’s privacy, recovery, and encryption controls before uploading a personal archive. You do not need a paid plan merely because an export exists; choose storage based on the archive’s actual size and the copies you can maintain.

Protect conversations and account information
Character.AI’s privacy policy says it collects data generated through interactions and may process that information to operate, improve, secure, and support the service. An export can therefore contain material you would not want exposed, including private conversations, identifying details, or account-related data.
- Use full-device encryption where your operating system provides it.
- For a removable drive, use an encrypted folder or password-protected container supported by your operating system.
- Choose a long, unique password and store it in a password manager rather than beside the drive.
- Do not place the archive in a publicly shared folder or an unprotected team drive.
- When sending a selected conversation to someone, remove names, email addresses, tokens, and other identifying details first.
- Keep the untouched archive and any working copies under separate access controls when other people use the computer.
Encryption does not make a lost password recoverable. Record the recovery information in a secure place before you need the archive.
Manual saves while the official export is pending
The official export is the broadest option, but its 3–4 week estimate makes it unsuitable for an urgent, selected conversation. For a chat you need today, create a separate manual record from the conversation view:
- Open the conversation and scroll far enough to load the messages you need.
- Copy the visible text into a local document, or use your operating system’s print function to create a PDF when that preserves the text you need.
- Add the character name, conversation title, date saved, and the account you used. These labels are your own records; they are not a guarantee that every character setting or hidden metadata was captured.
- Store the document using the same two-copy and encryption practice as the official archive.
Manual saving is immediate and useful for a few priority chats, but it is not a substitute for a whole-account export. It can omit older messages, images, settings, timestamps, or other data that a platform export may contain. Use it as a stopgap or a readable selection, not as proof that you have preserved every account record.

The table’s recommendations are backup practice, not additional Character.AI promises. Only Character.AI’s menu paths, email delivery, 3–4 week estimate, and seven-day link period are official timing or interface statements.
What the export cannot guarantee
No universal import into another chatbot
Although the privacy policy discusses data portability rights in some regions, the cited Character.AI pages do not promise that another chatbot can ingest the archive and reproduce the same characters, memories, safety settings, or conversational behavior. Before deleting an account or changing services, open a few files from your working copy and identify the text you actually need. Preserve character descriptions and other context separately if they matter to your future use.
No guarantee that a manual copy is complete
A browser selection or PDF captures what you load and save. It does not establish that you obtained every account record. Use the official export for completeness, and manual copies for speed or convenience.

Character.AI’s September 24, 2024 retirement notice described a separate migration process for older beta chats. It said recent chats would be available on the new site or mobile app, while chats older than six months could be manually moved from chat history using “Migrate chats.” The notice also said chats would be preserved and migrated after the transition.

Interface availability can differ because the notice dates from 2024.

Troubleshooting the export workflow
The Export Data option is missing
- Confirm that you are signed into the intended account, not a different login method.
- On the website, follow the complete path through Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data.
- In the app, check Settings → Legal & Privacy.
- Update the app or try the web path if one interface does not show the control.
- Do not assume that a chat-level menu is equivalent to an account export.
If the control remains unavailable, record the date, account email, app or browser version, and the exact screen you reached before contacting Character.AI support. Those details make an access problem easier to diagnose.
No email arrives after the request
- Search all folders for Character.AI and for terms such as “export” or “download.”
- Check that the account email can receive new messages and is not over quota.
- Allow the stated 3–4 week processing period; the Help Center does not describe the request as immediate.
- Keep a record of when you submitted the request and contact support if the published period has passed without delivery.
The link has expired
The official link period is seven days after the email is sent. If you missed it, submit a new export request or ask Character.AI support for the correct recovery procedure. Do not rely on an old forwarded link.
The archive will not open
- Download it again while the link is valid if the first transfer was interrupted.
- Compare the file size and extension with the downloaded item rather than renaming it randomly.
- Try the operating system’s built-in archive tools or a reputable, up-to-date utility.
- Keep the original untouched and troubleshoot only a duplicate.
A maintenance routine for long-term access
After the first successful download, set a simple review schedule. Once a year, confirm that both copies still exist, that the storage device can be read, and that you still know the encryption password. If you create new manual copies, add the date and conversation title so they do not become indistinguishable files. Replace a removable drive before it becomes unreliable, and migrate the archive to new media if your computer no longer supports the old connection.
If you are preparing to close an account, change email addresses, or hand a device to someone else, request the official export first and wait for the archive to arrive. The 3–4 week processing estimate means this should be planned rather than left to the final day. Download it within the seven-day link window, verify that the file is present, and only then make account or device changes.
