AI data centers are creating a real but highly variable electricity and equipment opportunity. The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects global data-center consumption to rise from 485 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2025 to 950 TWh in 2030, while a 2026 U.S. Department of Energy/Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (DOE/LBNL) study puts data centers at 11.8% of U.S. electricity use by 2030, with scenarios from 9.5% to 15.3%. Those figures describe potential demand, not guaranteed revenue for any stock.

The investable opportunity extends beyond electric utilities. Generation owners, transmission and distribution contractors, transformer and switchgear manufacturers, cooling and power-management vendors, and backup-power suppliers can all participate. The disciplined approach is to verify how committed the data-center load is, trace that load into a company’s contracts and cash flow, identify the physical bottleneck it serves, and test what happens if projects are delayed, downsized or rejected by regulators.

What is the AI data-center power trade?

The “AI power trade” is the chain of businesses that build, connect, supply and operate the electricity infrastructure required by data centers running artificial-intelligence workloads. It is not a single industry or a guaranteed basket of winners. A project can create revenue for a regulated utility, a merchant generator, a substation contractor, a transformer maker, a switchgear supplier, a cooling company and a backup-power provider, but each earns money under different contracts and risks.

AI changes the physical economics. IEA reports that AI-server power density increased 11 times between 2020 and 2025 and could rise another fourfold by 2027. Higher rack density increases the need for medium- and high-voltage distribution, transformers, switchgear, uninterruptible power systems, cooling, generators and storage even when the number of buildings changes little.

That makes exposure a question of earnings transmission rather than a slogan. A company may mention data centers in a presentation yet have no signed customer load, no funded project and no capacity to deliver equipment. Conversely, a supplier with no “AI” branding may sell a constrained component that every new campus requires.

How large and credible is the electricity demand?

Start with ranges and dates, then determine which portion is financially committed. IEA says total data-center electricity demand grew 17% in 2025, while AI-focused centers grew 50%. Its 2026 outlook shows global consumption rising from 485 TWh in 2025 to 950 TWh in 2030. DOE/LBNL’s U.S. estimate is 11.8% of national electricity consumption in 2030, but its modeled range is 9.5% to 15.3%. The spread is a warning that load forecasts are assumptions, not orders.

Then classify each local project by evidence. A signed power contract with credit support is materially different from a hyperscaler announcement, and an energized building is different again. Keep these categories separate in your model:

  • Energized or under construction: physical work and interconnection milestones are visible.
  • Financed and permitted: capital, land, permits and equipment orders exist, but the load may still slip.
  • Interconnection or utility study: a request is being analyzed; it is not a revenue commitment.
  • Announced pipeline: a public intention without evidence of funding, permits or a customer obligation.

For utilities, look for customer deposits, minimum-take provisions, letters of credit, parent guarantees, special contracts and explicit cost-recovery treatment. For suppliers, ask whether a purchase order is cancellable, when it converts to revenue and which end customer ultimately funds it. Treat uncommitted announcements as pipeline until construction and energization are observable.

Which parts of the value chain can benefit?

Map a project from land and interconnection to operating power. Wesco’s 2025 SEC-filed presentation illustrates the sequence: land and substations, generation sets, transformers, electrical distribution and commissioning. Each stage has different pricing power, lead times, capital needs and cancellation exposure.

Segment What it sells Primary earnings link Key risk
Regulated utilities Generation, transmission, distribution and customer connection Rate-base additions and allowed returns, subject to regulatory approval Load that fails to arrive or costs shifted to other customers
Merchant generators Power, capacity and ancillary services Contracted megawatts, power-purchase agreements and market prices Fuel, power-price and capacity-market volatility
Grid contractors and distributors Substations, transmission, installation and commissioning Backlog conversion and project margins Labor, bonding, working capital and cancellations
Transformers and switchgear Voltage conversion and electrical protection Orders, pricing, lead times and factory utilization Component shortages, customer concentration and warranty claims
Power-management and cooling UPS systems, thermal management, controls and distribution Data-center orders, service revenue and product mix Technology changes, execution and concentration
Backup generation and storage Generator sets, batteries and controls Equipment sales, maintenance and replacement cycles Emissions rules, fuel access and permitting

How do you evaluate a regulated utility?

For a regulated utility, AI exposure is valuable only when the commission permits prudent investment to earn a return and the customer can pay. The analysis should connect load evidence to rate base, cash flow and customer allocation.

1. Verify the customer obligation

Read tariffs and special contracts for deposits, minimum bills, take-or-pay language, credit support, termination fees and responsibility for dedicated substations or transmission. A large requested load without these protections can leave ordinary ratepayers financing excess capacity.

2. Build the rate-base bridge

Estimate generation, transmission, distribution and interconnection capital separately. Identify construction work in progress, expected in-service dates, depreciation, the allowed return on equity and the lag between spending and recovery. A utility can report a large capital plan while near-term cash flow remains pressured by construction and financing.

3. Check cost allocation

Determine whether data-center customers pay incremental facilities, demand charges and upgrade costs, or whether those costs are spread across the customer base. Review commission orders and proposed tariffs, not only management commentary. Political scrutiny rises when a project’s economics depend on socializing a dedicated asset.

4. Test operating exposure

Model fuel and purchased-power costs, transmission ownership, outage penalties and the utility’s ability to serve coincident peak demand. A utility that owns generation may benefit from volume but also face fuel, emissions and reliability obligations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Examine financing capacity

Compare planned capital spending with operating cash flow, debt maturities, credit metrics and equity needs. Higher interest rates can reduce the present value of long-lived rate-base growth and make customer projects harder to finance.

How do you evaluate a merchant generator?

Merchant generators do not receive a guaranteed regulated return. Separate contracted megawatts from merchant output, and distinguish a long-term power-purchase agreement from a short-term capacity award.

  • Contract coverage: list contracted capacity by year, counterparty, price formula, credit quality and termination rights.
  • Fuel sensitivity: model gas, coal or other input costs and the effect of heat-rate performance on margins.
  • Market exposure: test power prices, congestion, ancillary-service revenue and capacity-market rules.
  • Build risk: include interconnection delays, turbine availability, construction overruns and liquidated damages.
  • Replacement economics: estimate maintenance, outage and environmental-compliance costs over the contract term.

A data-center contract can improve visibility, but it may also concentrate the company around one customer, one node or one technology. Compare the contracted return with the return available from ordinary commercial and industrial demand rather than assuming every AI megawatt is premium.

How do you evaluate equipment makers and contractors?

Equipment companies convert demand into revenue through orders, backlog and factory output. The most useful disclosures are operational, not promotional.

Backlog quality

Break backlog into firm orders, framework agreements and verbally identified opportunities. Review cancellation clauses, deposits, customer concentration, delivery dates, expected gross margin and the portion scheduled beyond the next twelve months. A large backlog with weak cancellation protection may be less valuable than a smaller backlog with deposits and firm delivery windows.

Book-to-bill and lead times

Rising orders are constructive only if manufacturing capacity, labor and components allow conversion. Track book-to-bill, lead times, factory additions, expedited freight and customer acceptance. IEA identifies transformers and other grid equipment as bottlenecks; shortages can raise prices while delaying the revenue they are supposed to create.

Pricing and margin

Determine whether price increases reflect sustainable scarcity, temporary surcharges or mix. Fixed-price contracts can turn a component shortage into a margin problem. Cost-plus arrangements transfer more inflation risk but may be less profitable if customers resist pass-through.

Service and warranty economics

Installed equipment creates recurring maintenance, software and replacement revenue. Check warranty reserves, failure rates disclosed in filings, service attachment rates and the age of the installed base. Rapid product changes can shorten replacement cycles but also increase support complexity.

Company disclosures that illustrate the process

Eaton reported 7% rolling order acceleration in Electrical Americas and 18% electrical-sector backlog growth in 2025, attributing momentum partly to data centers. Vertiv reported 35% year-over-year sales growth, approximately 15% organic order growth and an $8.5 billion backlog in the second quarter of 2025, citing robust data-center demand. GE Vernova reported a backlog above $150 billion, including more than $35 billion in Electrification equipment backlog, in its 2025 annual report. These figures demonstrate exposure; they do not prove that future margins, conversion rates or share returns will match them.

Contractors and distributors need an additional check: labor availability, bonding capacity, inventory ownership, working-capital requirements and cancellation provisions. A project can be economically attractive yet unprofitable if a contractor must buy scarce equipment before receiving payment.

How can you tell whether a data-center project is real?

Use a milestone checklist and assign a confidence level to every project in a company’s exposure.

  1. Customer identity: name the anchor customer or classify it as undisclosed; record credit support and contract duration.
  2. Site control: confirm land acquisition or a binding lease rather than a broad regional announcement.
  3. Permits: verify zoning, environmental and building approvals, including water and emissions permits where relevant.
  4. Interconnection: identify the utility study stage, queue position, required upgrades and target energization date.
  5. Financing: distinguish an announced investment from financial close, debt commitments or an approved capital budget.
  6. Equipment: look for transformer, turbine, switchgear, cooling and generator orders with delivery schedules.
  7. Construction: track site work, foundations, substations, buildings and commissioning evidence.
  8. Power consumption: confirm when the facility becomes operational and whether the contracted load ramps in stages.

Assign no revenue to an announcement that has not passed the relevant milestone. If the company does not disclose a milestone, use a conservative probability rather than silently treating the project as firm.

What common comparison framework works across companies?

Score every candidate on the same seven axes so a regulated utility is not compared with an equipment maker on an inappropriate metric.

Axis Questions to answer
Demand certainty How much load is signed, financed, permitted, under construction or merely announced?
Bottleneck position Does the company supply constrained generation, transmission, transformers, switchgear, cooling or backup power?
Contract economics Is revenue earned through regulated rate base, fixed price, cost-plus, a power-purchase agreement or merchant sales?
Backlog quality What are cancellation rights, customer concentration, delivery timing and expected margin?
Capital and financing How much capex, inventory, working capital and debt are required before cash arrives?
Regulatory and social risk Who pays for upgrades, and what are the permitting, emissions, water and local-opposition risks?
Valuation What price is the market already charging for AI-linked growth relative to base-business cash flow?

Use a written scorecard with evidence beside every score. A high-demand-certainty utility with heavy financing needs may be less attractive than a supplier with lower headline growth but firm orders, short conversion cycles and recurring service revenue.

How should you model upside and downside cases?

Build at least three cases and change operating assumptions, not just the valuation multiple.

Base case

Use the company’s disclosed committed projects, realistic energization dates, contracted margins and current capital plan. Keep uncommitted pipeline outside revenue and add it only when milestones are achieved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Upside case

Allow faster load ramps, better equipment pricing, higher utilization or additional signed projects, but state the milestone that would justify each change. Do not convert an industry forecast directly into company sales.

Downside case

Stress slower AI adoption, efficiency gains that reduce electricity per task, project cancellations, interconnection delays, transformer and turbine shortages, higher interest rates, cost overruns and regulators rejecting or reallocating data-center infrastructure costs. IEA says buildout is sensitive to market sentiment and financing conditions; it also notes that bottlenecks reduce the likelihood of aggressive near-term scenarios.

For utilities, calculate earnings-per-share and credit effects if load arrives two years late. For generators, test lower power prices and uncontracted megawatts. For equipment suppliers, delay backlog conversion, compress gross margin and increase working capital. For contractors, assume change orders are disputed and retention payments arrive later.

Which bottlenecks and policies determine who captures value?

Demand alone cannot produce earnings without a connection and a permitted project. IEA identifies constrained grid connections, transformers, gas turbines, planning approvals and capital as bottlenecks. It estimates that $170 billion of new generation investment is needed by 2030 for data-center demand. Each constraint can shift value toward scarce suppliers, but it can also postpone revenue and raise cancellation risk.

Generation choices add policy exposure. Gas turbines can be dispatched quickly but face fuel-price, emissions and permitting questions. Batteries and other storage can support reliability but depend on interconnection rules, duration economics and supply chains. Water availability and cooling technology matter in regions where data centers compete with households, agriculture or industry.

Regulators and lawmakers are also questioning whether some requested loads are financially committed or speculative and whether ratepayers could fund unnecessary infrastructure, as reported by The Associated Press in 2025. Read commission proceedings, proposed tariffs and legislative changes alongside corporate filings. A favorable load forecast is not enough if cost recovery is denied or delayed.

How do valuation and portfolio construction change the decision?

Separate the value of the existing business from the value of AI exposure. For a utility, compare the implied return on incremental rate base with financing costs and allowed returns. For a manufacturer, compare the market value attributed to data-center growth with backlog conversion, margins and service cash flow. For a generator, value contracted cash flows separately from merchant optionality.

Avoid treating every exposed company as the same trade. A diversified supplier may have AI-related growth while still earning most revenue from industrial, commercial or residential customers. A narrowly exposed company may grow faster but carry greater customer, technology and project concentration. Position sizing should reflect the downside case, not only the headline total addressable market.

Review results each quarter against the milestones in your original model: orders, backlog conversion, factory output, interconnection dates, customer deposits, capex and regulatory decisions. Replace assumptions with disclosed evidence as projects advance, and remove projects that lose financing, permits or customer support.

What is a practical research workflow for an individual investor?

  1. Create the universe: list utilities, generators, grid contractors, electrical-equipment makers, cooling and power-management vendors, and backup-power suppliers.
  2. Collect primary disclosures: read annual reports, quarterly filings, investor presentations, tariff filings and commission orders.
  3. Tag exposure: mark each revenue item as regulated, contracted, fixed-price, cost-plus or merchant.
  4. Grade project evidence: record customer, deposit, permit, interconnection, financing, equipment and construction milestones.
  5. Map bottlenecks: identify whether the company owns or supplies the scarce link and how long capacity takes to add.
  6. Build scenarios: model base, upside and downside cases with explicit dates and probabilities.
  7. Check valuation: compare the price with base-business cash flow and the incremental AI-linked earnings you can defend.
  8. Set review triggers: define what would make you add, hold, reduce or exit before the next earnings release.

This process prevents a forecast for global electricity use from being mistaken for a forecast of one company’s profit. It also makes uncertainty visible, which is essential when the industry’s own estimates span a wide range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do data-center customers usually pay for the grid upgrades they require?

The answer depends on the utility’s tariff and commission-approved contract. Some arrangements require deposits, dedicated-facility payments, minimum bills or credit support; others allocate part of an upgrade across the broader customer base. Read the filed tariff and commission order rather than assuming the customer bears all costs.

What does a transformer shortage mean for an investor?

It can support pricing and extend supplier backlogs, but it can also delay the projects that generate revenue. Check whether a company has secured components, expanded production and contract clauses that pass through cost or schedule changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How is a power-purchase agreement different from merchant exposure?

A power-purchase agreement specifies a buyer, term and pricing formula, creating more predictable cash flow if the counterparty performs. Merchant output is sold into prevailing markets, so earnings move with power prices, fuel costs, congestion and capacity rules.

Why can a utility’s stock fall even when data-center demand is rising?

The utility may need to spend heavily before load arrives, finance construction at higher rates or face a regulator that denies cost recovery. Investors can also have priced in more growth than the company’s contracts and permits support.
