The right way to evaluate TSMC is to connect its technology lead and customer demand to the enormous, rising cost of building semiconductor capacity, then decide whether the shares’ dated valuation compensates you for geopolitical, cyclical and execution risks. TSMC’s latest reported results were exceptionally strong, but growth and management forecasts alone do not prove that the stock is attractively priced. A sound decision requires five checks: what is driving demand, whether advanced-node capacity earns adequate returns, how margins hold through a cycle, what global expansion adds and costs, and what you are paying for the earnings and cash flow.

This framework uses TSMC disclosures available through its July 16, 2026 second-quarter release, January 15, 2026 earnings-call outlook, 2026 annual report covering 2025, and fundamentals information dated September 30, 2026. Refresh each figure against newer filings before placing an order. This is an analytical framework, not individualized investment advice.

What TSMC does—and why the stock needs a different analysis

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is a pure-play semiconductor foundry. It manufactures chips designed by other companies rather than selling a broad portfolio of its own branded processors. Its customers use the company’s manufacturing services for high-performance computing (HPC), smartphones, the Internet of Things, automotive systems and digital consumer electronics.

That model makes manufacturing economics central to the investment case. Demand forecasts must become wafer starts, usable capacity and profitable shipments. New process nodes require costly equipment, complex process development and high utilization. A company can report rapid sales growth while still destroying value if the capacity needed to produce that growth earns inadequate returns.

TSMC’s scale is substantial: in 2025 it manufactured 12,682 products using 305 process technologies for 534 customers, and annual capacity exceeded 17 million 12-inch-equivalent wafers. The customer and end-market breadth can reduce dependence on any single product cycle, but it does not eliminate semiconductor cyclicality or the risk that a large customer changes its purchasing plans.

Which security are you evaluating?

Common shares trade on the Taiwan Stock Exchange under ticker 2330. American Depositary Shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange under ticker TSM. Decide which listing you can buy, and keep the listing, currency and share-unit convention consistent whenever you calculate a valuation. The available company materials do not establish an ADS conversion ratio, so verify the ratio and any trading, currency or tax costs with your broker before comparing a Taiwan price with a U.S. price.

Measure Reported value What it tells you
2025 consolidated revenue NT$3,809.05 billion Annual scale of the manufacturing business
2025 net income attributable to shareholders NT$1,717.88 billion Profit available to common shareholders for the year
2025 diluted EPS NT$66.26 Per-share earnings; the annual report says it rose 46.4% from 2024
2025 revenue growth 31.6% from 2024 Historical growth, not a forecast
Q2 2026 revenue (quarter ended June 30) NT$1,270.38 billion, up 36.0% year over year Recent demand and shipment momentum
Q2 2026 net income NT$706.56 billion, up 77.4% year over year Profit growth exceeded revenue growth in that quarter
Q2 2026 diluted EPS NT$27.25, up 77.4% year over year Quarterly per-share result
Q2 2026 gross, operating and net margins 67.7%, 60.3% and 55.6% Very strong quarter; do not assume these are cycle-normal levels
Q2 2026 wafer revenue from 7nm and more advanced technologies 77% Reported advanced-node mix, not proof of future returns
2026 projected capital expenditure US$52–56 billion Management estimate given January 15, 2026; approximately 70–80% was expected for advanced processes
Management’s 2026 revenue outlook Close to 30% growth in U.S.-dollar terms Conditional forecast from the January 2026 call, not an achieved result
Market capitalization NT$66.6 trillion (US$2.1 trillion) as of September 30, 2026 Dated company-reported value, not a current quote or valuation verdict

The July 2026 release also provided Q3 2026 guidance of US$44.6–45.8 billion in revenue, a 65–67% gross margin and a 56–58% operating margin, based on an assumed exchange rate of NT$32 per U.S. dollar. Treat that guidance as a snapshot from that release and replace it with subsequent results when making a current decision.

Step 1: Test the demand thesis instead of assuming an AI boom

Separate visible demand from a narrative about artificial intelligence or HPC. TSMC’s advanced technologies supplied 77% of Q2 2026 wafer revenue, and the company’s management expected strong 2026 growth. Those facts establish current mix and guidance; they do not establish how long demand will last or whether every new fab will earn an attractive return.

Build an end-market demand check

  • HPC: Look for reported revenue, capacity commitments and customer orders that support the investment plan. Ask whether demand is broad across customers or concentrated in a few programs.
  • Smartphones: Check whether unit demand and flagship-node adoption can absorb capacity if the handset cycle weakens.
  • Automotive and IoT: Examine whether these markets provide steady utilization or remain exposed to inventory corrections and price pressure.
  • Consumer electronics: Treat this segment as particularly sensitive to tariffs, component prices and household demand, all of which management flagged in its January 2026 outlook.

Track quarterly revenue, wafer shipments, utilization and customer commentary together. A strong headline quarter with falling utilization or delayed customer ramps would be a warning that the demand thesis is less durable than the income statement suggests.

Use a slowdown test

Write down what happens if AI-related spending grows more slowly than expected. Estimate which planned projects could be delayed, which nodes would remain fully utilized, and how much operating leverage would work in reverse. Then test a second case in which non-AI markets weaken at the same time. Diversification helps only if those markets do not decline together.

Step 2: Judge technology leadership by economics, not node labels

Leading process nodes can support pricing power and customer relevance, but a smaller geometry is not automatically a better investment. Evaluate whether the node is shipping in volume, achieving acceptable yields, attracting multiple customers and generating returns after depreciation and operating costs.

Read the technology mix correctly

In Q2 2026, 2nm represented 3% of wafer revenue, 3nm 30%, 5nm 33% and 7nm 11%; technologies at 7nm and more advanced accounted for 77%. This mix shows that newer nodes were already commercially meaningful. It does not tell you the margin of each node, the customer concentration behind it or whether future capacity will be utilized at comparable rates.

Questions to ask about each major node

  • Is volume production established, or is the process still in a costly ramp?
  • Are several customers qualified, or does one design dominate the economics?
  • What equipment and packaging constraints could limit shipments even when wafer demand is strong?
  • Does the selling price cover the higher depreciation and process complexity?
  • How quickly could a competing process or customer redesign reduce demand?

Use later earnings releases to compare the reported mix with utilization, gross margin and capital spending. A rising advanced-node percentage is encouraging only when it converts into cash earnings and returns on invested capital.

Step 3: Compare growth with the capital required to produce it

TSMC is capital intensive. Management projected US$52–56 billion of 2026 capital expenditure and indicated that approximately 70–80% would go to advanced process technologies. Management also said spending would be significantly higher over the following three years than in the preceding three, while the cost per unit of N2 capacity is substantially greater than for N3.

Turn capex into a return question

  1. Map the spending: Separate advanced-node, mature-node, packaging and facility investment when the company discloses the categories.
  2. Estimate productive capacity: Identify when each project is expected to enter volume production, rather than treating announced capacity as current revenue.
  3. Check utilization: Compare actual wafer output and utilization with the capacity added.
  4. Check profitability: Observe whether incremental revenue maintains margins after depreciation, start-up costs, labor and energy.
  5. Check cash conversion: Compare operating cash flow and free cash flow with net income over several periods; heavy construction can make accounting earnings look stronger than cash available to shareholders.
  6. Recalculate returns: Use your own assumptions for useful lives, utilization and pricing. A project that works only at peak utilization deserves a lower confidence rating.

Do not treat the announced investment program as costless growth. If demand arrives late, a fab can carry depreciation and operating expenses before it reaches efficient utilization. Conversely, disciplined capacity additions that meet firm customer demand can reinforce TSMC’s technology position. The decision turns on the return, not the size of the announcement.

Step 4: Evaluate margins through the cycle

Q2 2026 margins were unusually high: gross margin was 67.7%, operating margin 60.3% and net margin 55.6%. Management said a through-cycle gross margin of 56% or higher was achievable. These are different concepts: the quarter is an observed result; the through-cycle figure is a management objective.

Build a normalized-margin view

  • Use several years of gross, operating and net margins rather than annualizing one strong quarter.
  • Identify how much margin comes from mix, pricing, foreign exchange, utilization and one-time items.
  • Compare actual results with the 56% or higher through-cycle objective, while recognizing that the objective is not a guarantee.
  • Model a weaker utilization case and a higher-cost case caused by overseas manufacturing, inflation or process complexity.

Margins should be read alongside capital intensity. A high gross margin can still produce mediocre shareholder returns if the asset base required to earn it expands faster than profits.

Step 5: Assess overseas expansion on both sides of the ledger

TSMC’s 2025 annual report says its Arizona facility began 4nm volume production in the fourth quarter of 2024 and describes further planned manufacturing expansion. A broader footprint may improve geographic flexibility and help customers meet regional supply requirements. It also introduces construction, labor, supply-chain, regulatory and operating complexity.

What to monitor in each expansion disclosure

  • Construction and equipment timelines versus the original schedule
  • Planned and actual capacity by process node
  • Ramp costs, yields and utilization after volume production begins
  • Government incentives and the conditions attached to them
  • Any difference between overseas and Taiwan cost structures
  • Whether global capacity changes customer commitments or pricing

Management cited global manufacturing expansion and inflationary costs as pressures on investment and profitability. Review the return profile of each location rather than assuming that geographic diversification automatically creates value.

Step 6: Make valuation explicit and date every input

Business quality is not a valuation. A superb company can be a poor purchase at an excessive price, while a cyclical setback can create opportunity if the balance sheet and long-term economics remain intact.

Use a like-for-like share price

The company-reported market capitalization was NT$66.6 trillion (US$2.1 trillion) on September 30, 2026, with 25,932 million common shares outstanding in the cited company materials. Because that market cap is dated, obtain the actual price on the day of your analysis and specify whether it is for Taiwan-listed shares or NYSE ADSs. Do not call the stock cheap or expensive from the market-cap figure alone.

Calculate several multiples

  1. Price-to-earnings: Divide the dated share price by trailing or forward EPS, and label which one you used. Compare the multiple with expected growth and the risk of a cyclical earnings peak.
  2. Price-to-sales: Use revenue when earnings are distorted by a temporary margin peak or trough, but remember that sales do not show the cost of the required capacity.
  3. Enterprise value to operating cash flow or free cash flow: Include debt and cash consistently, then examine whether heavy investment is depressing free cash flow.
  4. Return on invested capital: Compare operating profit after tax with the capital employed in fabs and equipment. This is especially important when capex is rising.
  5. Scenario valuation: Apply conservative, base and optimistic earnings and cash-flow cases. Vary utilization, node mix, margin and capex rather than changing only the terminal multiple.

The supplied materials do not establish a synchronized peer dataset or a current share price. Therefore, any peer multiple or “fair value” number you calculate must be your own dated analysis, with the peer definitions and currency shown clearly.

Step 7: Price the risks that could break the thesis

Geopolitical and trade exposure

TSMC identifies geopolitical tension, economic fragmentation, export controls, tariffs, conflicts and fragmented regulation as threats that can disrupt supply chains, restrict market access, raise costs and create investment uncertainty. The company describes alternative sourcing, strategic inventories, scenario planning, global expansion and compliance controls as mitigations. Those measures reduce exposure; they do not remove it.

Run at least one scenario in which export controls limit a customer or process, tariffs raise delivered costs, or a conflict interrupts logistics. Consider both the direct financial effect and the valuation multiple investors might assign during a period of uncertainty.

Capital-spending and execution risk

Rising tool prices and greater process complexity increase the amount of capital needed for each unit of leading-edge capacity. Delays, yield problems or weaker demand can leave expensive assets underutilized. Check project milestones and cash spending against the plan instead of assuming every announced wafer starts will arrive on schedule.

Customer concentration and demand cycles

A large customer base does not guarantee balanced revenue. A small number of high-volume designs can drive a node’s economics, while smartphone, consumer and automotive corrections can spread through the supply chain. Look for evidence that demand is broadening across customers and end markets.

Forecast risk

Management’s close-to-30% 2026 U.S.-dollar revenue-growth expectation and the Q3 guidance were conditional forecasts made on specific dates. Compare subsequent reported revenue, margins, capex and utilization with those statements. A forecast that is met once does not prove that the underlying growth rate is permanent.

How to read management’s planning claim

On January 15, 2026, Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei said: “We employ a disciplined capacity planning system to assess the market demand, from both a top-down and bottom-up approaches.” This explains management’s stated process, not independent verification of its forecasting accuracy.

Use the statement as a testable proposition. Compare capacity decisions with later customer demand, utilization, project timing and returns. If the company repeatedly adds capacity ahead of demand, your confidence in the process should fall; if additions track signed demand and produce acceptable returns, confidence can rise.

A practical TSMC investment worksheet

Before buying, write a one-page thesis with measurable checkpoints. This prevents a strong quarterly headline from replacing a complete analysis.

Question Your evidence What would invalidate the thesis?
Is demand broad enough? Revenue and customer indicators by HPC, smartphone, IoT, automotive and consumer markets Growth concentrated in one program or simultaneous weakness outside AI/HPC
Are advanced nodes earning returns? Node mix, utilization, pricing, margins and cash generation Higher mix but falling returns or persistent ramp losses
Can capex be funded? Operating cash flow, free cash flow and balance-sheet capacity Spending rises while cash conversion and utilization deteriorate
Is overseas expansion value creating? Ramp timing, yields, costs and customer commitments by site Repeated delays, structurally higher costs or weak utilization
Does the price compensate for risk? Dated P/E, cash-flow and invested-capital returns under several scenarios Valuation requires peak margins and uninterrupted growth
What is the exit rule? Specific operating or valuation thresholds Thesis changes but you continue holding because of the original story

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying the headline: One quarter of rapid EPS growth can reflect a favorable mix and utilization peak.
  • Confusing advanced technology with automatic profitability: Leading nodes can require disproportionate capital and carry ramp risk.
  • Using an undated price: Multiples change daily, while the cited market capitalization is specifically from September 30, 2026.
  • Comparing unlike securities: Do not mix a Taiwan share price with a U.S. ADS price without confirming the share-unit relationship and currency.
  • Treating guidance as fact: Label every forecast by date and replace it with the latest actual result.
  • Ignoring non-AI markets: Smartphone, automotive, IoT and consumer demand can determine utilization when HPC spending slows.
  • Assuming diversification removes geopolitical risk: More locations can improve flexibility while increasing execution and cost complexity.
  • Relying on a single multiple: Combine earnings, cash flow, invested-capital returns and scenario analysis.

When to revisit the analysis

Update the worksheet after each earnings release and whenever TSMC changes its capital-spending plan, node timetable or geographic expansion. At minimum, refresh revenue by end market, advanced-node mix, utilization, gross and operating margins, operating cash flow, free cash flow, capex and management guidance. Also refresh the share price and currency on the same date you calculate valuation.

For a long-term holder, the most important signal is not whether every forecast is met. It is whether demand, technology execution and capital discipline continue to produce returns that justify the price paid for the shares.

Bottom line: a quality business still needs a sensible entry price

TSMC combines enormous manufacturing scale, a broad customer base and a large share of revenue from advanced technologies. Its 2025 results and Q2 2026 performance demonstrate strong current profitability. The counterweight is equally important: leading-edge capacity requires escalating investment, overseas expansion adds cost and execution risk, semiconductor demand remains cyclical, and geopolitical and trade conditions can change quickly.

Invest only after you can explain, with dated numbers, how incremental capacity will earn returns, how margins would behave in a downturn, what overseas facilities contribute, which risks would invalidate your thesis and why the current price compensates you for them. If you cannot make those links, strong reported growth is a reason to investigate further—not a valuation conclusion.
