The practical answer: evaluate a quantum-computing stock on five separate questions: What has actually been demonstrated? Who is paying, and are customers returning? How much of revenue is meaningful and repeatable? Can the company fund years of development without destructive dilution? Finally, what growth and profitability does the current share price already assume?
A qubit-count headline, a customer list or a large cash balance cannot answer all five. Focused quantum companies can offer greater upside exposure but usually carry concentrated technical, commercial and financing risk. A diversified technology company may have serious quantum capabilities while quantum remains too small to move consolidated earnings. The framework below is designed to keep those facts separate.

Start by identifying the kind of quantum exposure you are buying
Public-market exposure generally falls into two broad categories. A quantum-focused issuer derives most of its identity from quantum hardware, software, cloud access or related services. A diversified technology company develops quantum systems inside a much larger portfolio that may include infrastructure, software, consulting, artificial intelligence and research.

IBM’s 2025 annual report places quantum computing within a business spanning software, consulting, infrastructure, hybrid cloud, artificial intelligence and research. It also says more than 80% of IBM revenue came from clients transacting across software, consulting and infrastructure, not from a separately reported quantum segment. That scale can support long-term research, but it also means a quantum breakthrough should not automatically be treated as a material change to IBM’s stock outlook. Use a five-part evaluation checklist
1. Test technical evidence, not just the roadmap
A roadmap is a plan. IBM’s Quantum 2026 roadmap describes intended system, error-correction and performance milestones, but a stated future target is not independent proof that the target has been delivered. Record the publication date, the exact milestone and the evidence the company later supplies.
For every claimed advance, capture these details:
- Architecture: Identify the approach being used and what engineering trade-offs it entails.
- System tested: Note the device, processor generation or full system, rather than accepting a generic “platform” label.
- Task or benchmark: Ask what workload was run and whether it resembles a useful customer problem.
- Error performance: Look for error rates, fidelity, coherence or other relevant measures, with test conditions.
- Error correction status: Distinguish physical-qubit demonstrations from logical-qubit results and from a fault-tolerant system.
- Repeatability: Check whether the result was reproduced across runs, devices or independent teams.
- Validation: Separate an internally reported result from one independently verified or published with sufficient methods for scrutiny.
A single qubit-count headline cannot establish commercially useful performance. Two systems with different architectures, workloads and error rates are not directly comparable merely because one advertises more qubits. Keep a dated log of promised and delivered milestones; a delayed or redefined target is execution information, not a footnote.
2. Separate commercial interest from paying demand
Quantum companies often describe collaborations, research networks, pilots, development contracts, cloud access, professional services and system sales together. Those activities have different economic value.

- Paid production use: A customer pays for recurring access or a deployed system that supports an ongoing workflow.
- Repeat purchases or renewals: The customer spends again after an initial project, showing more than curiosity.
- Paid pilot or development contract: There is revenue, but the work may end without production adoption.
- Professional services: Consulting or integration can generate cash while revealing that customers still need substantial assistance.
- Unpaid collaboration or announced partnership: It may validate interest, but it is not evidence of recognized recurring revenue.
For each customer announcement, ask who pays, how much is contractually committed, when revenue is recognized, whether the work is repeatable and whether one customer represents a significant concentration. D-Wave describes cloud access, systems and professional services as distinct channels; a growing customer or user count therefore should not be read as a recurring-sales figure by itself. 3. Examine revenue quality rather than total growth alone
Revenue growth can be driven by a one-time system delivery, a services engagement or a recurring cloud business. Those streams have different margins, cash-collection patterns and repeatability.
Build a revenue bridge for each reporting period:
- System sales and hardware deliveries
- Cloud or quantum-computing-as-a-service usage
- Professional services and implementation
- Licensing, software or other recurring arrangements
- Gross margin and cash collected, not only booked revenue
Then ask whether growth requires a new system sale every period or can compound through subscriptions and usage. A company can report strong top-line growth while its recurring channel shrinks or while gross losses remain wide.
4. Measure funding capacity and dilution
Quantum development may require years of research, fabrication, software work and customer support before scale. Review the latest balance sheet and cash-flow statement for:

- Quarterly operating cash use and expected commitments
- Debt, maturities, covenants and interest expense
- Share-based compensation
- Warrants, convertibles and other instruments that can increase the share count
- Acquisition costs and restructuring charges
- Recent or planned equity issuance
A large cash balance extends options; it does not prove that technical or commercial goals will be met. Estimate a range of cash runway using recent operating burn, then adjust for contractual commitments, capital expenditure and likely changes in working capital. Treat any runway estimate as a scenario, not a promise.

5. Compare valuation with the expectations embedded in the price
Technology potential is not the same as shareholder return. A technically promising company can be unattractive if the share price already assumes rapid revenue growth, durable margins and limited dilution.
Before comparing two stocks, obtain a current quote and reconcile basic shares with options, warrants, restricted stock and convertibles to create a fully diluted share count. Then examine:
- Market capitalization and enterprise value
- Price-to-sales or enterprise-value-to-sales using a clearly identified period
- Implied revenue growth needed to support the valuation
- Margin assumptions and the time required to reach them
- How much new capital may be needed before profitability
- Downside if a technical milestone slips or adoption takes longer
Current valuation is not established by the historical figures cited below. It requires a fresh market price, a current fully diluted share count and explicit scenario assumptions.

Management attributed the revenue increase principally to system sales and professional services, partly offset by lower quantum-computing-as-a-service revenue. That mix matters: a delivered system can lift one period’s sales without demonstrating recurring cloud economics. The approximately $884.5 million in cash and marketable securities at year-end is substantial liquidity, but it is not a stated runway because burn, commitments, investment returns and later financing can change the calculation.
D-Wave’s own cautionary language is relevant when using historical numbers: “Our historical results are not necessarily indicative of the results that may be expected for any period in the future.” Treat the filing as evidence of what happened in the reported period, not as a forecast or a fair-value conclusion.

IBM announced on June 2, 2026 that it planned more than $10 billion of quantum investment over five years. The same announcement reported more than $1.1 billion in quantum-program contracts since 2017 and a network of more than 340 organizations. These are company-reported program measures, not a disclosure of annual quantum revenue and not proof that every organization is a paying production customer. IBM’s chief executive Arvind Krishna said, “The quantum era is no longer ahead of us, it has started.” That is a company-announcement statement, not independent sector evidence. The appropriate investor question is narrower: how might quantum affect IBM’s consolidated growth, margins and capital allocation relative to its much larger businesses? Without separately reported quantum revenue, a quantum milestone may be strategically important while remaining financially immaterial to the stock in the near term.

Compare quantum-related stocks on the same axes
When comparing at least two issuers, use identical questions and dates. The following template prevents a compelling announcement from dominating the analysis.

Track roadmaps and announcements over time
One announcement is a starting point. A disciplined investor creates an evidence trail that can be checked at each filing or milestone update.
- Archive the original claim. Save the date, exact wording, target metric, expected delivery date and whether the statement is explicitly forward-looking.
- Define the pass condition. Specify what would count as delivery: a particular system available to customers, a published error result, a paid deployment or a recognized revenue line.
- Check the next primary document. Use the next annual report, quarterly filing, technical release or customer disclosure rather than relying on a headline recap.
- Record changes. Mark a milestone as met, delayed, redefined, withdrawn or not independently verifiable. Do not silently replace an old target with a new one.
- Connect the milestone to economics. Ask whether the result changed bookings, revenue, margins, cash use or the expected dilution profile.
IonQ’s 2025 Form 10-K provides a useful reminder about development-stage economics. It states: “We expect to continue to incur significant losses for the foreseeable future as we prioritize reaching the technical milestones necessary to achieve an increasingly higher number of physical and logical qubits and higher levels of qubit performance than presently exists—prerequisites for quantum computing to reach broad quantum advantage.” The statement links technical ambition to continued losses; it should not be mistaken for a timetable for profitability. Common hype signals and the corrective question

Build a one-page decision memo before buying
Write the investment case in a format that forces independent answers:
- Technical proof: The latest demonstrated result, its conditions and what remains unproven.
- Commercial proof: Paid customers, repeat activity, contract structure and concentration.
- Economic proof: Revenue mix, gross margin, collections and operating cash use.
- Funding proof: Cash, securities, debt, burn and potential dilution under a realistic scenario.
- Valuation proof: The current fully diluted value and the growth and margin assumptions required to justify it.
- Failure conditions: The specific technical delay, customer loss, financing event or valuation change that would invalidate the thesis.
Keep historical facts separate from forecasts. Label every figure with its reporting period and source. Revisit the memo after each filing rather than allowing a new announcement to reset the entire thesis.
What this framework can—and cannot—tell you
This process can reveal whether a company’s technical claims, customer evidence, financial resources and valuation assumptions line up. It cannot determine which stock is attractive at a particular price without current market data. A live quote, current market capitalization, fully diluted share count and explicit comparable-company assumptions are necessary for that judgment.
It also cannot turn a roadmap into a delivered product or a partnership into recurring revenue. The strongest conclusion available from the cited disclosures is narrower: quantum investing requires separating demonstrated capability from planned capability, interest from payment, revenue growth from durable economics, liquidity from runway and strategic commitment from material impact on consolidated earnings.
