Evaluate a quantum-computing stock as an early-stage technology business, not as a qubit-count contest. Separate products that generate recognized revenue from research programs and future roadmaps; read the latest filings for gross margin, operating losses, cash consumption, debt and dilution; then test whether the market value requires adoption and profitability that the company has not yet demonstrated. This framework is educational, not a buy or sell recommendation.
Start with the business that exists today
A quantum company can simultaneously have a functioning processor, cloud access, government work, customer pilots and substantial losses. Those facts are not contradictory. Your first task is to classify each activity by what it contributes now:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Recognized revenue: amounts recorded in the income statement under the applicable accounting rules.
- Bookings or backlog: contracted or expected work that may be delivered and recognized later.
- Pilots, demonstrations and partnerships: evidence of interest, but not necessarily paid, recurring demand.
- Development contracts: paid engineering or research work that may not scale like a repeatable software service.
- Roadmap claims: management’s plans and targets, which remain uncertain until achieved.
Rigetti’s 2025 Form 10-K says much of its revenue in the next few years was expected to come from development contracts and anticipated on-premises quantum-processing-unit or system sales. That is a forward-looking description, not proof that those sales occurred. Read the filing’s risk factors and use the company’s own wording when distinguishing plans from results: Rigetti 2025 Form 10-K.
European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) summarized the sector’s starting point in its May 13, 2026 analysis: “Notwithstanding heightened investor interest, these pure-play quantum firms remained at an early stage of commercialisation and continued to operate at significant losses.” The statement concerns the firms and period covered by that report, not every company with a quantum-related product. Read the report at ESMA’s quantum-computing analysis.

Use the same eight tests for every company
Comparability is difficult because companies may sell different hardware architectures, cloud access, professional services or development work. Apply the same questions to each issuer, but do not assume that their technologies or revenue models are interchangeable.
| Test | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Technical evidence | What system or service is available now? Which milestones were achieved, on what date and under what disclosed conditions? Is there a meaningful comparison with classical computing? |
| Commercial traction | Which customers paid, for what deliverable and when? Is the disclosure about paid use, a pilot, a partnership, a booking or nonbinding interest? |
| Revenue quality | How large is revenue relative to operating costs? What are gross margins, and how do they change with product, customer or contract mix? |
| Financial resilience | How much cash and investment is available? What are debt, operating cash use, capital spending and expected funding needs? What assumptions determine runway? |
| Shareholder economics | How have basic and diluted shares changed? Include equity issuance, options, warrants, earn-outs, stock compensation and possible debt conversion. |
| Valuation | What future adoption, revenue, margins and financing assumptions are embedded in the market value? Use share count and price from the same date, and distinguish market capitalization from enterprise value. |
| Execution and governance | Are milestones reported consistently? What customer concentration, manufacturing, supplier, control, related-party and dependency risks appear in filings? |
| Portfolio route | If considering a fund, what is its mandate, holdings, fee, concentration and liquidity? Does it own pure plays, diversified technology companies, suppliers or a mixture? |
Assess technical evidence without relying on qubit count
Qubit count alone does not establish useful performance or commercial readiness. A credible technical review records the architecture, error characteristics, connectivity, coherence or equivalent operating constraints, uptime, workload and the date and conditions of each disclosed result. Then ask what a customer can actually do with the system.
Identify the deliverable
Determine whether the company offers a cloud service, an installed system, access to a processor, software tools, professional services or a research collaboration. An installed machine and a metered cloud job produce different support obligations, capital requirements and revenue patterns. A professional-services engagement can demonstrate expertise while remaining labor-intensive and nonrecurring.

Prefer a disclosed workload, customer result or independently described comparison with a classical method over an isolated laboratory metric. Ask whether the result is reproducible, whether the baseline is competitive, and whether the company reports the full conditions rather than only a headline figure. If a milestone is still a target, label it as a target.
Separate achieved milestones from the roadmap
Create a dated ledger with three columns: promised milestone, evidence of completion and commercial consequence. A roadmap that reaches more qubits but does not improve useful workload cost, reliability or customer throughput may have limited business impact. Conversely, a smaller system can still support paid work; the filing should tell you whether that work is material.
Verify customers and the quality of revenue
Read the revenue footnotes and management discussion, not only a press-release customer list. For each material customer or program, record the contracting party, deliverable, period, payment status and recognition method where disclosed.
Classify the relationship
- Recognized sale or service: included in reported revenue for the stated period.
- Signed contract: a commitment that may be recognized over time or upon delivery.
- Booking: an order measure that is not automatically revenue.
- Pilot or proof of concept: an evaluation that may end without a larger purchase.
- Partnership or memorandum: potential cooperation, often without a guaranteed purchase.
- Government or research funding: can support development but may carry restrictions and does not prove commercial demand.
Look for customer concentration, contract duration, renewal terms, acceptance clauses and cancellation rights. A single system delivery can create a large quarter followed by a weak one; a cloud subscription may be more repeatable but can require continuing infrastructure and support spending.

Read margin by source
Total gross margin can conceal very different economics. D-Wave’s 2025 Form 10-K reported fiscal-year revenue of $24.587 million and gross profit of $20.306 million. Those are company-reported results for the year ended December 31, 2025, not forecasts. The filing describes revenue-related costs for its quantum-computing-as-a-service cloud offering, systems and professional services, and says research and development, general and administrative, and sales and marketing costs were expected to rise as it pursued its roadmap. Examine the mix rather than treating the aggregate margin as a permanent software margin: D-Wave 2025 Form 10-K.
A useful worksheet calculates, for each disclosed source, revenue, direct cost, gross profit, collection timing and whether the work is repeatable. Where the filing does not provide a split, write “not stated” rather than inferring one.
Measure losses, cash use and financing risk
Early commercialization means the income statement may remain negative even when revenue is growing. The question is how quickly cash is being consumed, what spending is discretionary, and how the company intends to finance the gap.
Start with the cash-flow statement
- Record cash and cash equivalents, short-term investments, restricted cash and debt at the same reporting date.
- Record net cash used in operating activities for the latest annual and quarterly periods.
- Separate capital expenditures and other investing needs from operating cash use.
- Compute a simple historical runway as available unrestricted cash divided by average recent quarterly operating cash use. Treat it as a scenario, not a promise: spending, receipts, financing and working capital can change abruptly.
- Read the liquidity and going-concern language for stated funding needs, covenants and planned offerings.
Rigetti’s 2025 Form 10-K reported a net loss of $216.2 million for 2025, compared with $201.0 million in 2024, and an accumulated deficit of $771.0 million at December 31, 2025. The filing warned that additional capital might be needed. These are issuer-reported fiscal-year figures and a balance-sheet snapshot, not a forecast of future losses: Rigetti’s filing.
Distinguish accounting loss from cash loss
Net loss includes noncash items such as depreciation, amortization and stock-based compensation, while cash flow includes working-capital movements and capital spending. Reconcile the two. A company can report a smaller accounting loss while consuming substantial cash, or show a large loss partly because of noncash charges.
Stress the funding plan
Model at least three cases: current spending, accelerated development and a cost-reduction case. In each case, ask when new equity, debt, customer prepayments or government support would be required. Financing risk is not limited to bankruptcy; an equity raise at a depressed price can transfer a larger portion of future economics to new investors.
Analyze dilution before you analyze per-share upside
Use the cover page and equity footnotes to build a dated capitalization table. Record basic shares outstanding, shares issuable on option and warrant exercise, restricted awards, earn-outs, convertible debt and any committed equity facility. Compare the current count with prior annual and quarterly filings.

Basic earnings per share uses basic shares; diluted earnings per share incorporates instruments only when the accounting rules make them dilutive. For an investor, instruments excluded from diluted EPS can still matter if the share price rises and they become exercisable. Stock-based compensation can conserve cash while increasing the eventual share count. Treat every potential issuance as part of the shareholder-economics analysis, with its exercise price, vesting, expiration and conditions.
When estimating market capitalization, multiply the contemporaneous share price by the appropriate dated basic or fully diluted share count. Do not combine a current price with an old filing. Enterprise value additionally reflects debt and cash, so it is not interchangeable with market capitalization.
Test what the valuation already assumes
A valuation is a set of expectations, not a verdict on technical quality. Write down the assumptions needed to justify it:
- the number and timing of commercial customers;
- revenue per customer and the portion that recurs;
- gross margin by cloud, system and services activity;
- research, sales and support spending required to deliver the roadmap;
- capital expenditure and manufacturing requirements;
- the amount and price of future financing; and
- the share count after that financing.
Then compare those assumptions with dated outcomes. A high market value can be rational only if future adoption and margins are much larger than today’s results, but the reverse is also true: a technically promising company can still be a poor investment if it repeatedly issues shares or cannot convert demonstrations into paid work.
Use scenario ranges rather than a single target price. In a downside case, delay adoption, lower utilization and add an equity raise. In a base case, use only milestones with credible evidence. In an upside case, include faster adoption but also the capital needed to build capacity. Label every market-capitalization, share-count and price input with its date.
What the available filings show—and what they do not
| Issuer or source | Dated evidence | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Rigetti Computing | Net loss of $216.2 million in 2025 and $201.0 million in 2024; accumulated deficit of $771.0 million at December 31, 2025; management said additional capital might be required. | Assess funding dependence, dilution and the gap between development-contract expectations and achieved recurring revenue. These figures come from the 2025 Form 10-K. |
| D-Wave Quantum | Fiscal-year 2025 revenue of $24.587 million and gross profit of $20.306 million. | Trace the mix among cloud, systems and professional services, then test whether rising R&D and other operating expenses can be funded. See the 2025 Form 10-K. |
| Quantum Computing Inc. | Its 2025 Form 10-K identifies QUBT as the Nasdaq trading symbol and provides the issuer’s disclosures. | Use the filing as a primary-source starting point; the existence of a filing does not by itself establish technical performance or valuation. See Quantum Computing Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-K. |
| ESMA market context | In late 2025, the combined market capitalization of four public quantum companies temporarily exceeded USD 65 billion and weekly trading volume surpassed USD 70 billion. | These are historical observations reported in May 2026, not current measures or evidence of shareholder returns. ESMA described the covered pure plays as early in commercialization and loss-making. |
Do not infer that one issuer’s figures describe the others. Accounting policies, contract mix, fiscal periods and architectures differ. Recheck newer quarterly filings before making any current decision.
Account for volatility and market attention
ESMA reported valuation surges followed by corrections among four US-listed quantum companies since late 2024. Its late-2025 market-capitalization and trading figures are explicitly historical. The report also compared approximately USD 25 billion of generative-AI startup funding in 2024 and USD 35 billion in 2025 with quantum-startup investment to show relative funding scale; those amounts are sector context, not quantum-company revenue or investor returns.

High turnover can increase execution risk. A rapidly changing price may reflect options activity, momentum or a changing estimate of future technology rather than a new quarterly result. Keep a dated investment memo so that a later price move does not rewrite what was known at the time.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare an individual stock with a fund carefully
A thematic fund can reduce single-company exposure, but it does not eliminate technology or valuation risk. ESMA noted that thematic products can mix pure-play quantum companies with large technology companies and suppliers, while public-market vehicles in the markets it analyzed remained relatively scarce.

Before using a fund, inspect its current prospectus and holdings for:
- mandate and definition of “quantum” exposure;
- top-ten concentration and geographic allocation;
- management fee, trading spread and other expenses;
- rebalancing schedule and index methodology;
- daily liquidity and assets under management; and
- whether exposure is direct, through diversified technology companies or through suppliers.
ESMA cited USD 0.6 billion in assets under management at the end of March 2026 for three EU-domiciled quantum-focused ETFs, plus US products with USD 3.3 billion and USD 0.03 billion in assets at the time covered. Those figures age quickly; verify current fund documents rather than using them as a recommendation.
A repeatable due-diligence process
- Set the date. Save the latest annual and quarterly filings, the share price and the share count as of one analysis date.
- Map the products. List each hardware, cloud, software and services offering, its availability and the customer problem it addresses.
- Build a milestone ledger. For every technical claim, record the announcement date, measurement conditions, independent validation if disclosed and whether the milestone affects a paid product.
- Reconcile customers to revenue. Classify each named relationship as revenue, contract, booking, pilot, partnership or research funding. Trace material changes in deferred revenue, accounts receivable and contract liabilities.
- Calculate operating economics. Extract revenue, cost of revenue, gross profit, R&D, sales and marketing, general and administrative expense, operating loss and cash from operations.
- Estimate runway in scenarios. Use recent cash use, planned capital spending and management’s stated funding needs. Show when financing becomes necessary under each case.
- Build the diluted share count. Include options, warrants, convertibles, earn-outs and stock compensation, with dates and exercise conditions.
- Reverse-engineer valuation. State the adoption, margin, spending and financing assumptions required by the market value. Compare them with achieved results, not slogans.
- Check governance and controls. Read risk factors, auditor language, internal-control disclosures, related-party transactions, customer concentration and supplier dependencies.
- Write a disconfirming checklist. Define the evidence that would make you reduce or abandon the thesis, such as missed milestones, falling cash, repeated dilutive offerings or weak conversion of pilots into revenue.
- Schedule updates. Revisit the model after each filing, financing, material contract, technical milestone or major price move. Historical numbers should never be presented as current without a date.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Treating a roadmap as revenue
Use future-tense language for targets and plans. Only recognized revenue belongs in the current operating case.
Using qubits as a standalone score
Ask whether the disclosed system improves a relevant workload, reliability, throughput or customer cost. A larger count without useful performance is not a business result.

D-Wave’s 2025 gross profit does not imply net income; operating expenses can exceed gross profit while a company invests in development and sales.

Ignoring dilution because the stock is rising
A rising price can make options, warrants and convertibles more likely to become shares. Model the post-financing count, not only today’s basic count.
Annualizing a single quarter
System deliveries and development contracts can be lumpy. Examine several periods, contract timing and customer concentration before calling a trend recurring.
Using stale market data
ESMA’s USD 65 billion market-capitalization and USD 70 billion weekly-volume observations were temporary late-2025 figures. Replace them with current, dated data for any live valuation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAssuming a fund is automatically diversified
Read current holdings and concentration. A fund can own a few correlated pure plays and still carry substantial thematic risk.
When the evidence is not enough
It is reasonable to conclude that a stock is not yet investable for your process. “Not stated” is a valid result when a filing does not disclose customer-level revenue, margin by product, a complete diluted count or a reliable delivery date. Do not fill the gap with a press-release estimate or an industry forecast. Wait for a filing, audited result or clearly defined milestone that answers the specific question.
Finally, keep technology potential and shareholder economics separate. A company may contribute to important research and still require years of capital, dilution and execution before generating durable returns. Your decision should follow the evidence that is available at the date of analysis, the assumptions your valuation requires and the losses you can withstand—not the excitement surrounding a future milestone.
