A high distribution yield does not tell you whether a midstream master limited partnership (MLP) can keep paying it. Evaluate an MLP by rebuilding its distributable-cash-flow (DCF) calculation, testing distribution coverage and retained cash, mapping debt and liquidity, and reading the contracts behind “fee-based” revenue. Then examine customer and sponsor concentration, capital requirements, and downside scenarios. This process produces an evidence-based view of cash-flow durability without treating any single ratio as a universal buy-or-sell rule.
What you are actually trying to establish
An MLP distribution is sustainable only when recurring cash generation, balance-sheet capacity, and contract economics can support it through ordinary weak periods as well as strong ones. Four questions organize the analysis:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- How much cash did the assets generate after the issuer’s stated cash costs and maintenance spending?
- How much of that cash was required for distributions, and how much remained for debt reduction, growth projects, buybacks or reserves?
- Can the partnership meet interest payments and maturities while still funding necessary capital?
- How durable are the contracts, volumes, customers and counterparties that produce the cash?
Use the latest quarterly and annual filings, but keep the periods consistent. A quarterly DCF number should be compared with distributions for that same quarter or trailing period, not with a full-year payment total. Date every figure: operating conditions, debt balances and ownership can change quickly.
Step 1: Rebuild distributable cash flow from the filing
Find the issuer’s definition first
DCF is a non-GAAP measure. There is no industry-wide formula, so begin with the partnership’s own definition and its reconciliation to GAAP net income or cash flow. Western Midstream Partners’ Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, for example, defines DCF from adjusted EBITDA after specified billing differences, cash interest, maintenance capital, taxes and applicable noncontrolling interests. Another issuer may classify an item differently or exclude it entirely.

Western Midstream’s filing cautions: “Our non-GAAP financial measures (i) should not be considered as alternatives to the comparable GAAP measures or any other measure of financial performance presented in accordance with GAAP, (ii) have important limitations as analytical tools because they exclude some, but not all, items that affect the comparable GAAP measures, (iii) should not be considered in isolation or as a substitute for analysis of our results as reported under GAAP, and (iv) may not be comparable to similarly titled measures of other companies in our industry, thereby diminishing their utility as comparative measures.” Treat that warning as an analytical instruction, not boilerplate.
Build the bridge line by line
Transcribe every adjustment into a worksheet. A typical bridge may look like this, but use the issuer’s exact labels and amounts:
| Bridge item | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Adjusted EBITDA | Which earnings are included or excluded, and are the adjustments recurring? |
| Billing, timing or working-capital adjustments | Is cash merely shifted between periods, or is an amount unlikely to be collected? |
| Cash interest | Does the figure include capitalized interest, swaps or interest from unconsolidated ventures? |
| Maintenance capital expenditures | Which projects preserve existing capacity, and could the issuer be classifying replacement work as growth capital? |
| Cash taxes | Are taxes paid by the partnership, a subsidiary or an owner, and are payments unusually low this period? |
| Equity-method distributions | Did the partnership actually receive cash from joint ventures, or is the amount merely accounting income? |
| Noncontrolling interests and other adjustments | What portion of cash belongs to other owners or is unavailable to common unitholders? |
Reconcile the final DCF total to GAAP cash-flow statements. A bridge that cannot be reproduced from the filing is a warning that the ratio may not be comparable from one issuer to another.
Step 2: Measure coverage and cash retained
Calculate coverage using matching periods
The basic calculation is distribution coverage = DCF ÷ cash distributions. Confirm what the denominator includes. Some partnerships include preferred distributions, general-partner interests or noncontrolling interests; others present coverage available only to common unitholders. Record the definition beside the ratio.
Calculate coverage for at least eight quarters when data are available, then inspect the weakest operating period rather than relying on the latest quarter. A single quarter can benefit from favorable billing timing, unusually low maintenance spending or a one-time customer payment.
Separate accounting coverage from retained cash
Coverage does not show how much cash the partnership kept after all discretionary uses. Prepare a second bridge:
- Start with cash generated or DCF under the issuer’s definition.
- Subtract cash distributions, including every class that ranks ahead of common units.
- Subtract growth capital actually paid, acquisitions, buybacks, debt repayments and material working-capital increases.
- Identify the cash balance and revolver capacity left at the period end.
Western Midstream states that its free cash flow is available in aggregate for distributions, debt repayments and other partnership purposes. That wording does not mean every dollar of free cash flow is earmarked for distributions. Retained cash may be deliberately used to finance projects or reduce leverage.

Interpret the trend, not a magic number
No reviewed source establishes a cross-industry “safe” coverage ratio or yield. A falling ratio, recurring deficits after maintenance capital, or distributions funded by new borrowing deserves more scrutiny than a high one-period ratio. Conversely, a modest ratio can be intentional when management is retaining cash to lower debt or complete a project with a documented return.
Step 3: Put leverage, interest and liquidity in context
Collect the complete debt picture
From the balance sheet, debt footnotes and earnings release, record:
- Gross debt and cash, with the resulting net debt.
- Debt-to-EBITDA as defined by the issuer and by its lenders, if different.
- Cash interest expense and the portion exposed to floating rates.
- Each maturity, required amortization and refinancing date.
- Revolver commitments, letters of credit, cash on hand and undrawn availability.
- Financial covenants, testing periods and the headroom to each limit.
Track the direction over several quarters. Leverage can rise even when EBITDA is stable if an acquisition is debt-funded; it can fall because of asset sales or unusually strong commodity-linked earnings rather than structural improvement.
Use stress cases instead of a universal ceiling
Model at least three cases: base EBITDA, a moderate decline in throughput or margin, and a more severe decline combined with higher interest expense. Recalculate interest coverage, debt maturities that must be refinanced, cash available after distributions and revolver capacity. If the partnership would breach a covenant or need to borrow to fund maintenance work in the downside case, the distribution has less margin than its headline coverage suggests.
MPLX reported a 3.7× leverage ratio and specified available liquidity at June 30, 2026. This is a dated MPLX disclosure, not a sector benchmark or a promise that a similar ratio is safe for another issuer. Different definitions of EBITDA, permitted debt and netting of cash can produce different ratios.
Examine the maturity ladder
A partnership with ample total liquidity can still face concentrated refinancing risk. List maturities by year and compare them with expected retained cash, committed revolver capacity and access to bond markets. Consider interest-rate exposure on floating-rate debt and the effect of refinancing at a higher coupon. A distribution policy that leaves little cash retained increases dependence on external financing when markets tighten.
Step 4: Determine what “fee-based” revenue really means
Classify each contract type
Read segment disclosures and material contracts rather than accepting the label “fee-based.” Place revenue into the economic categories below:

| Contract or margin type | What supports cash flow | What can still go wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed demand or reservation charge | Payment for committed capacity, often independent of daily throughput. | Customer credit, contract renewal, force-majeure provisions and stranded capacity. |
| Per-unit fee | Revenue rises with transported, processed or stored volumes. | Lower production, competing infrastructure or a customer shifting volumes. |
| Minimum-volume commitment | Customer pays for an agreed minimum even when actual volumes are lower. | Deficiency payments may be deferred, contested or offset in later periods. |
| Ship-or-pay or take-or-pay | Contractual payment for reserved transportation or purchased capacity. | Counterparty default, contract expiration and exceptions in the agreement. |
| Commodity-linked margin or keep-whole arrangement | Margin between commodity inputs and outputs. | Direct exposure to prices, basis differentials and volume changes. |
| Unhedged commodity activity | Potential upside when prices or spreads improve. | Cash flow can fall sharply when prices, spreads or production decline. |
Check duration, renewal and volume protection
For each major contract, record the remaining term, renewal date, escalation mechanism, minimum volumes, deficiency-payment rules and termination rights. A five-year agreement that expires next year is not equivalent to a five-year agreement with four years remaining. Compare contracted capacity with actual throughput and with the basin’s production outlook. Excess capacity may provide growth optionality, but it can also signal weak demand.

DT Midstream’s 2025 Form 10-K describes firm-service contracts that typically use long-term fixed demand charges or minimum-volume commitments. That structure can support revenue independently of actual throughput, but it is an issuer-described example rather than a guarantee for every MLP. Read the actual contract mix for the partnership you are evaluating.
Step 5: Identify customers, sponsors and cash you cannot freely access
Measure concentration
List the largest customers and their share of revenue, margin or throughput. A nominally fee-based partnership can still be exposed to one producer, refiner or utility if that customer represents a large portion of commitments. Review credit ratings where disclosed, payment history, bankruptcy remedies and collateral.
Analyze the sponsor relationship
Many MLPs depend on a sponsor for assets, contracts, governance and financing decisions. Examine related-party agreements, management fees, dropdown transactions, minimum-volume commitments and any conflicts provisions. Ask whether the sponsor has an incentive and financial ability to support the partnership during stress.
MPLX’s 2025 Form 10-K reports that Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC) accounted for 48% of MPLX’s total revenues and other income in 2025. The filing also reports that MPC owned MPLX’s general partner and approximately 64% of outstanding common units as of December 31, 2025. These are MPLX-specific, dated figures illustrating sponsor concentration; they are not sector-wide statistics.

Separate consolidated cash from joint-venture cash
Income from an equity-method investment is not the same as cash available to the parent. Compare the partnership’s share of joint-venture earnings with distributions actually received. Check for debt at the venture, restricted cash, distribution tests and funding obligations. A project can be profitable on paper while retaining cash for its own expansion or debt service.
Step 6: Account for maintenance, growth and asset integrity
Challenge the capital classification
Maintenance capital preserves existing service; growth capital expands capacity or adds new assets. Definitions vary, and some replacement or integrity work can be classified as growth. Compare the stated maintenance budget with historical spending, asset age, leak detection, compressor replacements, pipeline integrity programs and regulatory requirements.

Assess growth spending and project execution
For each major project, record committed cost, spending to date, expected in-service date, contracted revenue, return assumptions and completion risk. Delays can defer cash while interest and construction costs continue. Cost overruns or customer cancellations can turn a projected growth contribution into a funding requirement.
Review physical and regulatory risks
Fee-based contracts reduce some commodity-price exposure but do not eliminate operating risk. Read risk factors for:
- Asset aging, corrosion, leaks, outages and unplanned maintenance.
- Production or throughput decline in the connected basin.
- Competing pipelines, storage, processing or export capacity.
- Tariff approvals, environmental rules, permitting and litigation.
- Extreme weather, wildfire, cyber events and force-majeure interruptions.
- Environmental liabilities and obligations to fund joint ventures.
MPLX identifies risks involving debt, customer nonperformance, aging assets, sponsor relationships, regulation, project execution and operating disruption. Those categories apply as questions to other partnerships, not as proof that every MLP faces identical exposure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare two or more MLPs without misleading yourself
Use the same reporting period and accounting boundary for every issuer. Reconcile each non-GAAP measure before presenting a side-by-side ratio; apparent differences can reflect definitions rather than economics.
| Comparison axis | Evidence to place side by side | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| DCF quality | Bridge to GAAP, billing adjustments, cash interest, maintenance capital, taxes and noncontrolling interests. | Shows whether “DCF” represents recurring cash after necessary costs. |
| Distribution policy | Coverage by quarter, retained cash, preferred and general-partner distributions, and uses of surplus. | Distinguishes a self-funded payout from one supported by borrowing or asset sales. |
| Leverage and liquidity | Net debt, issuer and lender leverage, interest burden, maturities, covenants and revolver availability. | Shows resilience when EBITDA falls or refinancing costs rise. |
| Contract protection | Fixed charges, minimum volumes, ship-or-pay terms, duration, escalators and renewal exposure. | Indicates how much revenue depends on actual volumes and renegotiation. |
| Customer and sponsor concentration | Largest-customer percentages, sponsor revenue share, ownership and related-party terms. | Identifies dependence on a small number of decision makers or counterparties. |
| Asset and capital outlook | Basin trends, competing capacity, integrity spending, growth pipeline and project returns. | Tests whether current cash flow can persist without outsized future spending. |
Do not rank partnerships by yield alone. A lower-yielding MLP with stronger retained cash, later maturities and diversified contracts may have more distribution resilience than a higher-yielding, highly leveraged peer.
A practical worksheet and review sequence
- Define the period. Choose the latest quarter, trailing twelve months and at least two prior comparable periods.
- Copy the DCF reconciliation. Preserve the issuer’s labels, footnotes and noncontrolling-interest treatment.
- Recalculate coverage. Match DCF and distributions and document every item in the denominator.
- Build the retained-cash bridge. Include growth capital, acquisitions, buybacks, debt repayment and working-capital changes.
- Map debt. List gross and net debt, rates, maturities, covenants and liquidity.
- Run downside cases. Reduce EBITDA or throughput, increase interest expense and test refinancing needs.
- Inventory contracts. Classify revenue by fixed charge, minimum volume, per-unit fee and commodity exposure; note expiry dates.
- Concentrate on counterparties. Quantify top customers, sponsor share, joint-venture distributions and credit risks.
- Audit capital needs. Compare maintenance definitions with asset age, integrity obligations and historical spending.
- Write the conclusion in probabilities, not certainties. State what supports the distribution, what could weaken it and which disclosure would change your view.
Common analytical mistakes and how to correct them
Using yield as a safety score
Yield is the distribution divided by the unit price. A falling price can make the yield look attractive while signaling that investors expect weaker cash flow or greater risk. Start with cash generation and contracts; use yield only to describe the market price relative to the current payout.

Treating fee-based revenue as fixed and risk-free
Fixed demand charges can be interrupted by customer default, force majeure, contract expiration or infrastructure competition. Minimum-volume commitments may be deferred or renegotiated. Trace the payment obligation to the contract and the customer’s ability to pay.
Ignoring maintenance capital
A distribution covered before integrity and replacement spending is not covered on an economic basis. Reconcile the issuer’s maintenance-capital definition with actual projects and asset condition.
Assuming sponsor support
Sponsor ownership can align incentives, but it can also create concentration and conflicts. Read related-party terms, governance rights and the sponsor’s own leverage rather than assuming a parent will provide cash.
Recommended Free Tools
Confusing joint-venture earnings with accessible cash
Use distributions received, not merely equity-method income, when assessing cash available for the partnership’s distribution.
Tax and account-level considerations
MLP investors commonly receive partnership tax reporting rather than a simple dividend form. The timing and character of income, deductions, state filings and basis adjustments depend on the specific partnership, ownership structure and account. Tax documents can arrive after ordinary brokerage statements and may require partnership-specific reporting. Consult a qualified tax professional for your circumstances; this framework is not individualized tax advice.
What a defensible conclusion looks like
After completing the worksheet, state the evidence in three parts: the recurring cash sources, the financial capacity to withstand stress, and the contractual or operational risks that could reduce either. For example, you might conclude that coverage is supported by long-term demand charges and substantial liquidity, but that a large sponsor share of revenue and a near-term maturity wall require monitoring. Or you might find that reported DCF exceeds distributions while maintenance spending and joint-venture cash restrictions leave little retained cash.
There is no verified cross-industry threshold for a safe leverage ratio, coverage ratio or distribution yield in the reviewed filings. The useful output is therefore a transparent, repeatable analysis that another reader can reproduce from the same issuer disclosures and update when contracts, debt or capital plans change.
