Evaluate a jewellery stock as the business it actually is—not simply as a bet on gold. First identify the issuer, listing and revenue model; then read its latest annual and interim filings, test inventory and cash conversion, model commodity and currency risks, assess leverage and controls, and only then compare a normalised valuation with genuinely similar companies. A jewellery retailer, precious-metals dealer and gold miner can all appear under the same broad label while having entirely different economics.
The framework below is a due-diligence process, not a buy or sell signal. Use the latest issuer filings and market prices, and label historical results, management guidance and analyst estimates separately.

1. Establish exactly what security and business you are buying
Write down the legal issuer, ticker, exchange, listing jurisdiction, share class, reporting currency and fiscal year-end. Confirm whether you are looking at ordinary shares, depositary receipts, preferred shares or another instrument. Two tickers with similar names may represent different companies or share classes, and a foreign listing may report in a currency that makes headline comparisons misleading.

| Business model | Main revenue drivers | Useful first tests | Commonly misleading comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Branded or multi-brand retailer | Store and online unit sales, price, mix, traffic and conversion | Comparable-store sales, gross margin, inventory turns, store productivity and operating cash flow | Comparing retail gross margin directly with a miner’s margin |
| Wholesaler or manufacturer | Orders from retailers, production volume, capacity and customer concentration | Backlog, utilisation, receivables, customer concentration and cash conversion | Assuming retail traffic metrics apply |
| Direct-to-consumer brand | Digital traffic, customer acquisition, repeat purchase and average order value | Marketing efficiency, returns, fulfilment cost and contribution margin | Treating reported sales growth as evidence of profitable demand |
| Precious-metals dealer, logistics or depository | Trading spreads, transaction volume, storage and ancillary fees | Gross spread, inventory or principal risk, liquidity and counterparty exposure | Using a retailer’s inventory-turn benchmark |
| Gold or precious-metals miner | Production, realised metal prices, grades, recoveries and costs | Reserves, production guidance, sustaining capital, all-in sustaining cost and mine-life risk | Using a retailer’s P/E or working-capital cycle without adjustment |
| Mixed or vertically integrated group | A combination of retail, manufacturing, dealing and mining | Segment results, intercompany eliminations and capital allocation by segment | Valuing the entire group on one segment’s multiple |
Gold.com’s 2026 filing illustrates why this step matters: a precious-metals company can combine wholesale sales, logistics, depository services and ancillary activities. Its consolidated margins and working-capital needs cannot be interpreted like those of a store-based jeweller.
2. Read filings in an order that exposes the real risks
Use the latest annual filing, then compare interim reports and at least two prior periods. In the United States, the 10-K is the core document; elsewhere, use the equivalent audited annual report and regulatory filings.
- Business: identify products, brands, channels, stores, online operations, manufacturing sites, geographic exposure and material changes in strategy.
- Risk Factors: list significant risks in the order management presents them. Investor.gov describes research as part of an investor’s due diligence, and SEC guidance identifies this section as a primary source of disclosed threats.
- Management’s Discussion and Analysis (MD&A): read management’s explanation of trends, earnings, liquidity and cash flows. SEC guidance describes MD&A as management’s opportunity to explain what the statements show, what they do not show, and the trends and risks affecting results.
- Audited statements and notes: inspect the income statement, balance sheet, cash-flow statement, segment note, revenue recognition, inventory, leases, debt, taxes, goodwill and impairment disclosures.
- Market-risk and controls sections: review interest-rate, foreign-exchange, commodity-price and equity-price exposure, auditor comments, internal-control findings, related-party transactions and any restatement.
- Interim reports: check whether a recent quarter changes the annual story, particularly inventory, cash flow, debt, guidance and commodity exposure.
Keep a period-by-period worksheet. Mark every figure as reported, management guidance or an external estimate; do not blend those categories.
3. Separate genuine operating growth from price and mix
Build a comparable operating picture for each disclosed segment and channel. Track revenue growth, comparable-store sales or traffic, gross margin, operating margin, same-currency growth, store openings and closures, e-commerce mix, returns and promotional intensity.

Decompose the growth
- Volume: more pieces, customers, transactions or production units.
- Price: higher ticket prices, including increases that merely reflect more expensive gold or diamonds.
- Mix: a shift toward higher- or lower-margin products, brands, channels or geographies.
- Acquisitions and footprint: newly acquired revenue or additional stores rather than improvement in established operations.
- Currency: reported growth created by translating a foreign operation at favourable exchange rates.
Ask whether margins expanded because of better productivity, or because price increases temporarily outpaced material costs. Check traffic, conversion, average transaction value and unit counts where disclosed. A sales increase caused mainly by higher metal prices is not equivalent to more units sold or stronger customer loyalty.
4. Make inventory and cash conversion central retail tests
Inventory is often the largest operating asset for a jewellery retailer and can hide deteriorating demand until markdowns or write-downs occur. Calculate inventory turnover using the SEC financial-statement guide’s formula: Inventory Turnover Ratio = Cost of Sales / Average Inventory for the Period. Use average beginning and ending inventory when available, and keep the accounting basis consistent.
Tests to perform
- Compare inventory growth with sales growth and gross-margin movement over several periods.
- Read notes on aged, slow-moving, defective or shrunk stock; reserves; net realisable value; consignment; memo inventory; and physical-count procedures.
- Look for repeated or unusually large markdowns, rising promotional activity and declining turns.
- Check whether operating cash flow follows reported profit. A profitable retailer that repeatedly consumes cash may be building stock or extending credit to customers.
- Review receivables, supplier-finance arrangements and payment terms for signs that working capital is being shifted away from the balance sheet.
Signet’s filing explains that commodity-heavy inventory can affect valuation, cash requirements and margins, while reserves depend on demand, targeted turns and market conditions. Its disclosure also warns that fluctuations in polished-diamond and gold pricing and availability can adversely affect earnings, inventory valuations and cash availability.
Working-capital calculations
| Measure | Formula or approach | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory turnover | Cost of sales ÷ average inventory |
Higher is not automatically better; extremely high turns may indicate a different product mix or insufficient stock. |
| Days inventory outstanding | 365 ÷ inventory turnover |
Rising days can signal slower demand, assortment problems or deliberate stock investment. |
| Working capital | Current assets − current liabilities |
Shows the short-term funds tied up in operations; interpret alongside seasonality and supplier terms. |
| Operating cash conversion | Cash from operations ÷ net income |
Persistent weak conversion warrants investigation of inventory, receivables, capitalised costs and one-off items. |
5. Test leverage, liquidity and the quality of cash flow
Review the current ratio, debt-to-equity, interest coverage, lease obligations, debt maturities, revolver availability and covenant headroom. Jewellery retailers may have substantial lease commitments even when conventional borrowings look modest.

Reconcile net income to operating cash flow and free cash flow. Investigate capitalised costs, acquisition adjustments, stock-based compensation, supplier-finance arrangements and charges described as “one-off” that recur each year. Compare free cash flow after maintenance capital expenditure, not only cash before investment.
Stress the balance sheet under weaker sales, a working-capital build and higher interest rates. Identify the date of the next material maturity and whether cash, committed facilities and expected operating cash can cover it without an equity raise or asset sale.
6. Model gold, diamond, currency and demand sensitivities
Jewellery companies can be exposed to gold, diamonds, silver and other materials through both cost and inventory valuation. Signet states that price and availability fluctuations can affect merchandise margins, earnings, inventory valuations and cash availability; supply-chain, geopolitical and regulatory factors also influence diamond and gold sourcing.

- Material costs: model higher and lower gold, diamond and silver costs.
- Pass-through: estimate how quickly price increases can be passed to customers before traffic or conversion suffers.
- Margin: calculate gross-margin compression if costs rise faster than selling prices.
- Inventory: assess possible markdowns or writedowns if demand weakens or prices reverse.
- Foreign exchange: model translation effects and transaction exposure for non-domestic sourcing and sales.
- Interest rates: test interest expense, customer financing demand and valuation multiples.
- Discretionary demand: examine the effect of lower traffic, fewer transactions and a shift to cheaper products.
Read the issuer’s market-risk disclosures for hedges and their limits. A hedge may reduce a short-term input-price risk but can introduce counterparty, liquidity, timing and basis risk. Do not assume that a higher gold price helps every jeweller: it may raise replacement cost, require more cash to fund inventory and deter price-sensitive customers.

7. Check sourcing, controls and governance
Review conflict-mineral and country-of-origin disclosures, supplier concentration, sanctions exposure, product traceability, labour and environmental claims, cybersecurity, related-party transactions, auditor comments, restatements and material weaknesses.
Signet describes country-of-origin inquiries and due diligence for gold, tin, tantalum and tungsten. Such procedures show why sourcing compliance can affect reputation, merchandise availability and operating cost. Ask whether the company can verify the origin of materials, respond to a regulatory change and replace a concentrated supplier.
Control questions
- Were any material weaknesses or significant deficiencies disclosed?
- Did the auditor modify its opinion or highlight going-concern uncertainty?
- Have inventory counts, shrinkage controls or valuation methods changed?
- Are related-party transactions clearly explained and independently approved?
- Do executive incentives reward revenue growth without equivalent cash-flow or return targets?
8. Analyse mining exposure on its own terms
For a miner or vertically integrated group, inspect reserves and resources, ore grade, production guidance, recovery rates, sustaining and growth capital, jurisdiction, royalties, reclamation obligations and mine-life assumptions. Model free cash flow at several gold-price assumptions rather than relying on one spot price.
Track realised prices against the reference metal price, and compare actual production and costs with guidance. DRDGOLD’s filing notes that World Gold Council cash-cost and all-in sustaining-cost measures can vary significantly among miners and should not alone provide a comparison basis. Treat these measures as supplementary; reconcile them to IFRS or GAAP results and understand exactly what each company includes.

9. Value the shares only after normalising the business
Potential valuation measures include P/E, EV/EBIT, EV/EBITDA, price-to-free-cash-flow, dividend yield and, where appropriate, price-to-book or net-asset value. Select the measure that fits the model: cash-flow and asset measures may be more informative for a miner, while inventory economics and lease-adjusted operating performance matter greatly for a retailer.
Normalise before applying a multiple
- Remove or separately analyse commodity-price peaks and troughs.
- Adjust for restructuring, acquisitions, impairments and unusual tax outcomes.
- Review share-count changes from buybacks, issuance and stock compensation.
- Use lease and debt obligations consistently when comparing enterprise values.
- Compare with companies sharing similar geography, growth, leverage, business mix and inventory economics.
A low multiple is not automatically a bargain. It may price in deteriorating demand, excess stock, weak controls, expensive debt, regulatory exposure or structurally poor returns. Conversely, a premium multiple requires durable growth, strong cash conversion and a balance sheet capable of funding that growth.
10. Compare two jewellery stocks with a disciplined scorecard
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Business model | Are both companies retailers, brands, wholesalers, dealers, miners or mixed groups? |
| Growth quality | Did growth come from units and volume, price, acquisitions, new stores or gold-price inflation? |
| Margins and cash | Which has the stronger gross and operating margin, operating cash flow and free cash flow after maintenance investment? |
| Inventory economics | How do turns, markdowns, reserves, shrinkage and working-capital intensity compare? |
| Balance-sheet risk | What are net debt, lease commitments, maturities, covenants and available liquidity? |
| Commodity and currency sensitivity | Can each company pass through costs, hedge exposures and fund inventory through a price shock? |
| Governance and sourcing | How complete are controls, sourcing, supplier-concentration and compliance disclosures? |
| Valuation | Are the earnings and cash flows normalised, and are the peers genuinely comparable? |
Record the evidence for each row and note what is not disclosed. If a key figure is unavailable, write “not stated” with the relevant filing and period rather than filling the gap with an industry average.

11. A practical pre-investment checklist
- Confirm the issuer, ticker, exchange, share class, currency and fiscal year-end.
- Map revenue and capital allocation by segment.
- Read the annual filing in the order of Business, Risk Factors, MD&A, statements, notes and market-risk disclosures.
- Compare at least two prior periods and the latest interim report.
- Separate volume, price, mix, acquisition and currency effects on growth.
- Calculate inventory turnover and examine reserves, markdowns, shrinkage and physical-count controls.
- Reconcile profit to operating cash flow and free cash flow.
- Stress material costs, pass-through, demand, foreign exchange and interest rates.
- Review debt, leases, maturities, covenants and liquidity.
- Check sourcing, supplier concentration, internal controls, auditor comments and related parties.
- If mining is involved, analyse reserves, production, sustaining capital and cost definitions separately.
- Apply a normalised valuation only against genuinely comparable businesses.
The result should be an evidence-backed view of how the company earns money, converts sales into cash and withstands a commodity or consumer shock. It should not be a checklist that mechanically produces a buy or sell recommendation.
