Hindustan Zinc’s dividend yield is not a permanent number. Calculate it from a clearly dated share price and a clearly defined dividend amount, then test whether that cash payment can survive weaker zinc, lead and silver prices. The company reported ₹29 per share for FY2025 and ₹10 per share for FY2026, so using one unusually high payout to forecast every future year would be unsafe.
The latest audited period covered the year ended March 31, 2026, with approval of the exchange filing recorded on April 24, 2026. A current yield requires a market price from the same, specified date; the company reports establish dividends but do not provide a permanently current share-price denominator.

Start with a dated, transparent yield calculation
Dividend yield is a cash-return ratio, not a company characteristic that stays fixed. The basic calculation is:

Both parts of the fraction need labels. State whether the numerator is the latest completed financial-year dividend, a trailing-twelve-month total, or an annualized interim dividend. State the share-price date, exchange, and whether the price is before or after the relevant ex-dividend adjustment.
Why the date matters
A share price can move substantially between the dividend announcement, ex-dividend date, record date and payment date. Pairing a FY2025 dividend with a later price can create a yield that looks precise but mixes two different market conditions. For a historical comparison, use the closing price on a stated date and identify the convention. For an investor asking what the yield is now, retrieve the latest traded price at publication and timestamp it.
Choose the right dividend numerator
- Latest full-year yield: use the total dividend declared for the most recently completed financial year divided by the price on the chosen date.
- Trailing-twelve-month yield: add all dividends whose ex-dates fall in the preceding 12 months. This can include interim, final, special or exceptional distributions, so list each component.
- Forward yield: use an expected future dividend. It is an estimate, not a reported fact, and should be separated from historical yield.
- Annualized interim yield: multiplying one interim dividend by a number of periods assumes future payments will match it. That assumption is especially risky when payouts have changed sharply.
Do not call a yield “current” unless the price date and dividend basis are visible. The FY2025 annual report mentioned a 5.6% dividend yield, but that figure belongs to the report’s own measurement date and methodology; it should not be reused as an undated quote.

| Financial year | Reported dividend per share | Total dividend distribution | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| FY2025 | ₹29 | ₹12,253 crore | Historical full-year numerator; unusually high relative to FY2026 |
| FY2026 | ₹10 | ₹4,225 crore | Most recent completed-year numerator in the available reports |
The FY2025 figure is nearly three times the FY2026 figure. That difference is the central warning for yield analysis: a high yield calculated from ₹29 can reflect a distribution that is not representative of the next cycle. Conversely, a yield calculated from ₹10 may understate future cash returns if the board later declares an additional distribution. Treat each year’s payment as an observation, not a promise.
How to calculate the yield yourself
- Identify the dividend basis. For a backward-looking measure, start with ₹10 per share for FY2026 or ₹29 per share for FY2025, and say which one you selected. For a trailing measure, list every payment in the 12-month window.
- Record the price date. Use a closing or live price from the relevant exchange or a clearly identified market-data provider. Write the date and time zone beside the price.
- Align the dividend event. If you are measuring an ex-dividend return, use the price on or immediately before the ex-date and explain the convention. If you are comparing valuation today, use today’s price but keep the historical dividend label.
- Apply the formula. For example, the FY2026 historical yield is “₹10 divided by the share price on [date], multiplied by 100.” Do not insert a price from a different date without labeling the mismatch.
- Show the result’s limitations. Say whether the payment includes a special dividend, whether the figure is gross of taxes, and whether the price is unadjusted for corporate actions.
Because no stable current share price is established by the company’s annual-report materials, an exact current percentage should be added only after obtaining a dated market quote. A result without that denominator is incomplete, not conservative.
Why a high yield can be misleading
Yield rises when the dividend increases, but it also rises when the share price falls. A falling price may signal that investors expect weaker metal prices, lower volumes, higher costs, regulatory risk or a smaller future payout. The ratio therefore combines a cash decision by the board with a market judgment about future earnings.

For a cyclical miner, the denominator can move daily while the numerator is declared only periodically. A double-digit yield based on a previous special distribution can disappear after the ex-date or after the next annual result. Evaluate the payout’s source and repeatability before treating the percentage as income.

Separate Hindustan Zinc’s three main metal exposures
Hindustan Zinc is an integrated producer of zinc, lead and silver. A zinc-only analysis misses important drivers of profit and cash flow.
Zinc: the core base-metal exposure
Zinc revenue depends on realized prices, refined and mined volumes, grades, recoveries and the spread between selling prices and treatment, refining, energy, labour and mining costs. Currency also matters because sales and many costs may be denominated differently. In FY2026, the company reported zinc cost of production excluding royalty of US$959 per tonne. A lower unit cost gives the business more room when zinc prices weaken, but it does not eliminate price risk.
Lead: a separate price and volume factor
Lead is an important additional metal rather than a footnote to zinc. The FY2026 KPI commentary specifically identified lower lead prices as an offset to margin improvement. A company-level model should therefore change lead assumptions independently instead of applying one base-metal price to all production.
Silver: a major earnings driver
Silver can materially change Hindustan Zinc’s earnings mix. The FY2026 CFO statement attributed approximately 45% of net profit to silver, and the KPI material reported a silver portfolio of 627 tonnes. Silver-price and silver-volume cases belong in any dividend assessment. A fall in silver can pressure profit even when zinc is stable; a strong silver market can support cash generation without a matching move in zinc.

- Realized price: start with the price Hindustan Zinc actually receives, not only an international reference price. Product premiums, discounts, timing and contract terms can create a difference.
- Volume: check mined metal, refined metal, silver output and by-product volumes. Lower volume can offset a higher price.
- Grades and recovery: ore quality and metallurgical recovery determine how much payable metal emerges from each tonne processed.
- Operating costs: include energy, labour, maintenance, treatment and refining charges, and mining costs. A price increase is less valuable when costs rise faster.
- Currency: rupee-dollar movements can change reported revenue, costs and margins even if dollar metal prices are unchanged.
- Royalties and taxes: government-linked charges affect the cash available after accounting profit.
- Hedges: add or subtract the economic and accounting effect of contracts that fix or cap part of the selling price.
- Cash conversion: follow the effect into EBITDA, net profit, operating cash flow, free cash flow and net cash. Dividend capacity is determined by cash and capital needs, not by revenue alone.
Hindustan Zinc’s FY2026 KPI commentary illustrates the interaction: the approximately 54% EBITDA margin, up from 51% in FY2025, benefited from better zinc and silver prices, favorable exchange rates and lower production costs. Those gains were partly offset by strategic-hedging losses, lower lead prices and lower silver volume. The example shows why a simple zinc sensitivity is incomplete.
Include hedging in both upside and downside cases
Hedging changes the price Hindustan Zinc effectively realizes. It can make revenue, EBITDA and cash flow more predictable when markets fall, but it can also limit participation in a rally or create a loss relative to later spot prices.
For FY2026, the company reported hedges covering 71 kilotonnes of zinc at an average price of US$3,133 per tonne and 59 tonnes of silver at an average price of US$60 per troy ounce. These are coverage amounts and average prices for that reporting period, not a permanent hedge ratio. The KPI page separately cited strategic-hedging losses as an offset to margin improvement.

Never assume that a hedge protects every tonne or every future year.
Four tests for dividend sustainability
1. Cash coverage
Compare the dividend with cash flow after the spending required to keep the existing operation productive. FY2026 free cash flow before growth capex and renewable-power investment was ₹13,337 crore, while the reported dividend payout was ₹4,225 crore.
| FY2026 measure | Amount | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Free cash flow before growth capex and renewable-power investment | ₹13,337 crore | Strong stated cash generation, but excludes the specified investment categories |
| Dividend payout | ₹4,225 crore | Cash distributed for the reported ₹10 per-share dividend |
| Simple stated-figure coverage | Approximately 3.2 times | ₹13,337 crore divided by ₹4,225 crore; not a fully adjusted maintenance-capex measure |
The approximately 3.2-times comparison is useful only with the company’s definition attached. Because the free-cash-flow figure is before growth capex and renewable-power investment, it cannot by itself prove that the same payout is available after every obligation.

2. Cycle coverage
Build a downside case with lower zinc, lead and silver prices, weaker volumes, higher energy costs and an unfavorable exchange rate. Then reduce cash flow for royalties, taxes, working capital and hedging outcomes. The question is whether a dividend remains affordable without borrowing or selling assets, not whether one profitable quarter covers it.

Hindustan Zinc ended FY2026 with ₹5,594 crore of net cash. That is a meaningful buffer against a downturn, but cash on the balance sheet can have competing uses. A strong balance sheet does not guarantee that all available cash will be distributed.
4. Payout consistency
Compare several years of regular, interim and special distributions. The move from ₹29 per share in FY2025 to ₹10 in FY2026 demonstrates that payout volatility is material. No standalone long-run dividend target or guaranteed payout policy is established in the cited company materials, so a normalized dividend must be treated as an investor estimate rather than a disclosed commitment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Account for growth investment before calling the payout secure
Hindustan Zinc approved phase-one projects of approximately ₹17,000 crore aimed at doubling refined-metal capacity to 2.0 million tonnes per annum and developing critical-mineral capacity. These commitments can compete with dividends even when current operations generate surplus cash. A sustainability review should map the timing of project spending, expected funding sources, maintenance capital expenditure and the board’s capital-allocation priorities.
For an income-focused investor, the relevant sequence is: sustain existing mines and smelters, fund legally required and safety-related spending, preserve liquidity, finance approved growth, and then determine distributable cash. The order can change with market conditions, but omitting growth commitments creates an overly generous coverage ratio.
Is Hindustan Zinc a zinc stock or a silver stock?
It is neither a pure zinc proxy nor a pure silver producer. Zinc remains the core base-metal exposure, lead adds another price stream, and silver’s reported contribution of approximately 45% of FY2026 net profit makes it a major earnings driver. The answer depends on the period: a change in silver prices, silver output or by-product economics can alter the profit mix even if zinc production is unchanged.

When analyzing the shares, maintain separate assumptions for zinc, lead and silver. Combine them only after modeling volumes, costs, exchange rates, royalties, taxes and hedging. This approach also makes it easier to explain why the dividend can change when the headline zinc price appears stable.
How to compare Hindustan Zinc with another metal producer
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Yield quality | Is the dividend covered by normalized free cash flow after maintenance capital expenditure, or by a one-off distribution? |
| Payout volatility | How much comes from regular payments versus special or unusually high distributions? |
| Commodity mix | What proportion of earnings comes from zinc, lead, silver and other by-products? |
| Cost position | What are unit costs, energy requirements, ore grades, recoveries and currency exposures? |
| Hedging policy | What percentage is hedged, for how long, at what prices, and with what realized gains or losses? |
| Balance sheet | Is the company in net cash or net debt, and how much liquidity is reserved for downturns? |
| Reinvestment burden | How much capital maintains current output, and how much funds expansion or new projects? |
| Capital-allocation policy | Does management state a formula or target, or does the board decide distributions case by case? |
A competitor with a lower headline yield may offer more dependable cash if its payout is covered after maintenance spending and its commodity mix is less volatile. A higher-yielding producer may be attractive only when the investor accepts the possibility of a sharp reduction during the next downcycle.
A practical review checklist
- Write the dividend amount, financial year and whether it includes interim, final or special payments.
- Write the exact share-price date, exchange and price type.
- Recalculate the yield using the same date convention for every company or year compared.
- Check realized zinc, lead and silver prices rather than relying on one benchmark.
- Review mined, refined and silver volumes, grades and recoveries.
- Track zinc cost of production, energy costs, royalties, taxes and rupee-dollar effects.
- Read the hedge coverage, average hedge prices, tenor and reported gains or losses.
- Compare dividends with operating cash flow and free cash flow after maintenance needs.
- Subtract or separately fund approved growth projects, including the approximately ₹17,000 crore phase-one program.
- Test a downside case in which all three metals weaken and costs rise.
- Check the latest quarterly release before describing the yield or commodity outlook as current.
What to update before publication or purchase
The investor overview lists FY2027 quarterly materials, so refresh revenue, margins, volumes, hedges, capital spending and cash before making a current assessment. Retrieve a dated exchange price for the denominator and identify whether the latest dividend is a declared payment or an expectation. If a market-data source uses adjusted prices or a different ex-date convention, disclose that choice.
Do not present an exact current yield from the annual reports alone. Their dividend disclosures establish the numerator, while the market supplies the changing denominator. Keeping those two inputs separate prevents a historical payout from being mistaken for a forward promise.
Bottom line
Hindustan Zinc’s FY2026 numbers show substantial resilience: ₹13,337 crore of free cash flow before specified growth investments, ₹5,594 crore of net cash, FY2026 revenue of ₹40,844 crore, EBITDA of ₹22,162 crore and net profit of ₹13,832 crore. They do not make the ₹10 dividend permanent. The FY2025-to-FY2026 change from ₹29 to ₹10 per share, the company’s exposure to lead and silver as well as zinc, strategic-hedging effects and large expansion commitments all argue for a cycle-based analysis. Calculate a dated yield first, then decide whether the cash payment remains affordable after prices, costs, hedges and investment needs are changed together.
