The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) is not one business: Entertainment, Sports, and Experiences have different revenue drivers, margins, capital requirements, and sensitivities. A strong quarter in one segment can therefore conceal weakness in another, while improving operations do not automatically mean the shares are cheap.

How do I evaluate Disney stock before investing?
Use a repeatable process rather than a single headline number. Start with the company’s filings, identify how each segment earns money, compare several years of financial statements, separate GAAP from Disney’s non-GAAP measures, examine cash flow and investment requirements, build a risk register, and then value the shares using assumptions you can stress-test.
Recommended Free Tools
- Map the business. Understand what drives Entertainment, Sports, and Experiences and which costs are variable, contractual, or project-based.
- Establish a comparable financial history. Review revenue, segment operating income, margins, net income, diluted EPS, operating cash flow, capital expenditures, debt, and share count across multiple fiscal years and trailing periods.
- Reconcile reported and adjusted results. Read the footnotes and reconciliations before using adjusted EPS, total segment operating income, or free cash flow.
- Test cash and reinvestment. Determine how much cash remains after content, sports rights, parks, cruise ships, hotels, technology, debt service, dividends, and repurchases.
- Model risks and scenarios. Build downside, base, and upside cases for demand, pricing, costs, content performance, currency, and capital projects.
- Value the stock at today’s price. Compare the market price with normalized earnings and cash flow, then ask how much of your expected improvement is already reflected in the valuation.
- Review capital allocation and ownership context. Check buybacks, dividends, debt maturities, acquisitions, major commitments, and management’s stated plans.
Disney’s Q3 FY2026 shareholder letter and FY2025 Annual Financial Report are the primary documents for this work. The company’s Quarterly Results page is where to check for newer filings.

How does Disney make money?
Disney reports three operating segments. Each should be evaluated separately before you combine them into a consolidated view.
Entertainment
Entertainment includes filmed and television content and subscription streaming operations. Important questions include whether subscription additions and retention support revenue, how much advertising contributes, whether programming and marketing costs are timed unusually in a quarter, and whether content spending produces durable engagement or only short-lived hits. Examine licensing, distribution, and streaming economics rather than treating subscriber growth as equivalent to profit growth.
Sports
Sports economics depend on rights fees, advertising, affiliate and distribution relationships, audience demand, and the cost and timing of programming. Rights contracts can lock in substantial costs while advertising and viewership fluctuate. A sports segment can grow revenue while margins fall if rights or production costs rise faster than monetization.
Experiences
Experiences includes parks, resorts, cruises, consumer-facing experiences, and related products. Attendance, occupancy, per-capita spending, ticket and hotel pricing, capacity, weather, travel conditions, labor, and major construction projects all matter. This segment can generate attractive cash returns, but its assets require large, long-lived investments and can be affected by tourism disruptions or a weak consumer.
Use segment descriptions, segment notes, and risk factors in the annual report rather than relying on Disney’s brand recognition. For every segment, ask which drivers are recurring, which are cyclical, and which depend on a single title, sporting event, attraction opening, or regional economy.
What did Disney report in Q3 FY2026?
Disney reported Q3 FY2026 revenue of $25.248 billion, up 7% from $23.650 billion in Q3 FY2025. Income before income taxes was $3.645 billion versus $3.211 billion, a 14% increase. Total segment operating income was $5.555 billion versus $4.575 billion, up 21%; Disney identifies this as a non-GAAP measure. Diluted GAAP EPS was $1.51, down from $2.92, while Disney’s adjusted diluted EPS was $2.06, up from $1.61. The quarter therefore illustrates why an investor must read the reconciliation instead of substituting adjusted EPS for GAAP EPS. These figures and the company’s explanations appear in the August 5, 2026 shareholder letter.
| Q3 FY2026 measure | Q3 FY2026 | Prior-year quarter | Reported change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $25.248 billion | $23.650 billion | Up 7% |
| Income before income taxes | $3.645 billion | $3.211 billion | Up 14% |
| Total segment operating income (non-GAAP) | $5.555 billion | $4.575 billion | Up 21% |
| Diluted GAAP EPS | $1.51 | $2.92 | Down 48% |
| Adjusted diluted EPS (non-GAAP) | $2.06 | $1.61 | Up 28% |
| Cash provided by operations | $4.866 billion | ||
| Disney-defined free cash flow (non-GAAP) | $3.072 billion |
The gap between GAAP and adjusted EPS is not a minor presentation detail. Locate every excluded item in Disney’s reconciliation, decide whether it is genuinely unusual, and consider whether similar charges or gains may recur. Do not compare an adjusted figure in one period with a GAAP figure in another.

Nine-month perspective
For the nine months ended June 27, 2026, revenue was $76.397 billion, total segment operating income was $14.758 billion, diluted EPS was $4.12, and adjusted diluted EPS was $5.25. Cash provided by operations was $12.515 billion and Disney-defined free cash flow was $5.735 billion. Compared with the first nine months of FY2025, revenue rose 6%, segment operating income 5%, and adjusted EPS 9%; diluted EPS fell 33%, operating cash flow fell 8%, and free cash flow fell 24%. That divergence calls for an examination of working capital, capital expenditure, content investment, and the non-GAAP reconciliation before extrapolating the quarter.
Which Disney segments are driving results?
Q3 segment performance was uneven. The following figures are company-reported for the quarter ended June 27, 2026; segment operating income is Disney’s non-GAAP measure.
| Segment | Q3 FY2026 revenue | Q3 FY2026 segment operating income | Year-over-year change in segment operating income |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entertainment | $11.345 billion | $1.680 billion | Up 64% |
| Sports | $4.500 billion | $0.858 billion | Down 17% |
| Experiences | $9.968 billion | $3.017 billion | Up 20% |
For the first nine months of FY2026, segment revenue was $34.669 billion for Entertainment, $14.018 billion for Sports, and $29.461 billion for Experiences. Segment operating income was $4.116 billion, $1.701 billion, and $8.941 billion, respectively. Compare several periods, calculate margins consistently, and read the allocation and elimination items in Disney’s segment tables before drawing conclusions from a single quarter.
Entertainment streaming signals
Disney reported Q3 FY2026 Entertainment subscription-video-on-demand revenue growth of 11%, subscription revenue growth of 15%, advertising revenue growth of 3%, and a 13% SVOD operating margin. The company said the margin benefited partly from the timing of marketing and programming spending. Disney’s full-year FY2026 expectation was a double-digit Entertainment SVOD operating margin excluding the 53rd week. Treat the quarterly margin as a point-in-time company-reported result, not proof of a permanently sustainable margin.
Experiences demand and one-time items
Disney said domestic parks and experiences revenue grew 11%, global Experiences revenue grew 10%, and that global growth reflected approximately 6% volume and 3% rate. Domestic parks per-capita spending grew 4%, while the company noted softness at Asia parks. It also said Q3 Experiences operating-income growth included an approximately $100 million tariff refund, estimated to represent roughly four percentage points of that segment’s growth. Separate recurring attendance and pricing trends from this discrete refund and from regional variation.
How should you review Disney’s multi-year financial performance?
Use the FY2025 annual report’s audited statements through September 27, 2025, then add the Q3 FY2026 quarter and nine-month figures. A useful worksheet contains, for each fiscal year and trailing period:
- Revenue by segment and consolidated revenue.
- Segment operating income, segment margins, and consolidated operating income.
- Net income and diluted GAAP EPS.
- Disney’s adjusted EPS, with the reconciliation kept beside the reported number.
- Cash provided by operations, capital expenditures, and free cash flow with Disney’s definition.
- Debt, interest expense, cash, dividends, repurchases, and diluted share count.
Mark acquisitions, divestitures, impairments, restructuring, unusual tax effects, litigation, tariff refunds, and other items that impair comparability. Then ask whether the apparent trend remains after those items are removed. A five-year chart can be useful, but it should not replace reading the underlying notes: a major rights deal, park opening, content slate, or accounting item can change a year’s appearance.

How do GAAP and adjusted Disney measures differ?
GAAP statements are the foundation for comparing profitability, assets, liabilities, and cash flows. Disney separately presents total segment operating income, adjusted diluted EPS, and free cash flow as non-GAAP measures and provides reconciliations. Those measures may help explain management’s view of recurring operations, but they are not interchangeable with GAAP results.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For each adjustment, ask:
- What exact charge or gain was excluded?
- Has a similar item appeared in prior periods?
- Does the item require cash, reduce future earning power, or reflect a normal cost of operating the business?
- Would another company classify the item the same way?
- Are you using the same definition for every period in your model?
Free cash flow is especially sensitive to definitions. Reconcile Disney’s $3.072 billion quarterly and $5.735 billion nine-month figures to operating cash flow and capital expenditures, and investigate why nine-month free cash flow fell 24% year over year even as adjusted EPS rose 9%.
How do cash flow and reinvestment affect the investment case?
Cash generation determines how much Disney can invest, reduce debt, pay dividends, repurchase shares, or withstand a downturn. Track cash provided by operations and capital expenditures, then examine spending that may sit elsewhere in the business economics: content production and acquisition, sports rights, park and resort construction, cruise capacity, hotels, technology, and maintenance.
A project can have attractive expected returns and still create shareholder risk if it opens late, costs more than planned, or attracts weaker demand. Disney’s annual report describes uncertainty around large investments. The Q3 materials said Experiences had an operating margin of about 30% for the first nine months and that management expects future capital projects to deliver double-digit returns over their lifetimes. That is management’s expectation, not a realized return for every project. Test those projects with lower attendance, delayed openings, higher labor or construction costs, and weaker pricing.
What are the risks of investing in Disney?
Disney’s FY2025 annual report identifies risks that can affect several segments at once. Build a risk register with a trigger, an affected metric, and a monitoring source for each item.

Macroeconomics and inflation
A weaker economy or higher inflation can pressure park attendance, hotel and cruise spending, subscriptions, advertising, and operating costs. A model that assumes uninterrupted pricing power should show what happens when consumers trade down or postpone travel.
Currency and international exposure
Currency movements can change reported international revenue, costs, and profit even when local-currency demand is stable. Separate operating performance from translation effects and identify which regions are most exposed.

Technology and changing viewing habits
Changes in how audiences watch video can weaken linear television economics, alter distribution relationships, and increase technology or content-delivery costs. Streaming growth must be judged by retention, monetization, and margin, not viewing scale alone.
Content and consumer preferences
Expensive films, series, sports programming, and attractions may underperform if tastes change or a release slate misses. Hit-driven businesses can show volatile quarterly results, so use a range of outcomes rather than a single success assumption.

Long-term rights commitments can raise fixed costs while audiences and advertising fluctuate. Carriage negotiations, platform changes, regulation, and the loss or delay of content can affect revenue and margins.
Travel, tourism, weather, and labor
Experiences depends on travel conditions, consumer confidence, weather, labor availability and costs, and reliable operations. Regional weakness, such as the Asia-park softness Disney described for Q3, should not be hidden by global totals.
Execution and regulation
Large investments can face construction overruns, delays, permitting issues, technology failures, labor disputes, cybersecurity events, or regulatory changes. Review commitments and contingencies in the annual report instead of assuming every planned project proceeds on schedule.

Cash-flow and enterprise-value methods
Use operating cash flow or a consistently defined free-cash-flow measure, and consider enterprise value relative to operating cash flow or EBITDA when comparing companies with different debt levels. Reconcile Disney’s non-GAAP free cash flow and keep capital spending assumptions explicit. A cash-flow multiple is only meaningful when the cash figure is comparable across periods and companies.
Discounted cash flow
A DCF should disclose:
- Revenue and margin assumptions for Entertainment, Sports, and Experiences.
- Subscription, advertising, rights, attendance, per-capita spending, and capacity assumptions where relevant.
- Content, sports-rights, maintenance, and growth capital expenditures.
- Working-capital needs, taxes, debt, and share count.
- Discount rate and terminal-growth rate.
- Downside, base, and upside cases, with sensitivity to margins, reinvestment, and terminal value.
Do not infer undervaluation from revenue growth alone. Compare your implied value with the current price and ask whether the market already assumes stronger margins, successful content, sustained park demand, or unusually high project returns.
Peer comparisons
If you compare Disney with another media or entertainment company, use the same fiscal periods and metric definitions. Adjust for business mix and concentration, subscription versus advertising exposure, parks and cruise assets, sports-rights costs, content investment, free cash flow after capital expenditures, debt and interest burden, international currency exposure, valuation, and capital-allocation history. A headline multiple can mislead when one company owns asset-heavy experiences and another does not.
Is Disney stock a good investment right now?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer without your purchase price, time horizon, risk tolerance, tax situation, and assumptions about Disney’s future. The Q3 FY2026 results show improving revenue and segment operating income, but they also show a sharp difference between GAAP and adjusted EPS, weaker Sports operating income, lower nine-month operating and free cash flow, and one-time or timing effects that require normalization.
Before deciding, write down the price you would pay, the earnings and cash-flow range you expect, the investment spending required to achieve it, and the events that would invalidate your thesis. If the downside case produces a loss you cannot tolerate, the stock is not suitable at that price even if management’s outlook is optimistic.
How should management outlook and buybacks be used?
Management commentary is evidence about expectations, not a guarantee. In the August 5, 2026 letter, Chief Executive Officer Robert A. Iger wrote: “Our strong fiscal Q3 results and reiterated full-year outlook reinforce our confidence that we are uniquely well positioned.” Attribute that sentence to management’s opinion rather than treating it as an independent conclusion.
The Q3 letter said Disney was targeting at least $9 billion in share repurchases in fiscal 2026 and reiterated adjusted EPS growth expectations. Evaluate the plan against operating cash flow, debt, capital projects, and the price paid for repurchased shares. A buyback creates value only when the company can fund it responsibly and repurchases at prices below conservative intrinsic value; a stated target is not a guarantee.
Disney’s investor-relations webcast also warns: “Actual results may differ materially from those expressed or implied.” Use that caution when interpreting every forward-looking statement, including margin, project-return, streaming, and repurchase expectations.
Quick Recap

- Have you read the latest Form 10-K, Form 10-Q, shareholder letter, and non-GAAP reconciliations?
- Can you explain the revenue and profit drivers of Entertainment, Sports, and Experiences?
- Have you compared at least several fiscal periods rather than relying on Q3 alone?
- Are GAAP EPS, adjusted EPS, segment operating income, and free cash flow labeled separately?
- Have you investigated the nine-month decline in operating and free cash flow?
- Did you remove or separately model the approximately $100 million tariff refund and other discrete items?
- Have you modeled content, sports rights, parks, cruise, technology, debt, and maintenance investment?
- Does your risk register include inflation, currency, viewing changes, content performance, tourism, labor, regulation, and project execution?
- Is your share price dated to a specific market close, with current shares outstanding?
- Do downside, base, and upside cases produce an adequate margin of safety?
- Are management targets treated as assumptions to test rather than promises?
