Do not treat a benchmark score, a product label, or a striking demo as proof that an AI is superintelligent. Evaluate the claim as a chain of evidence: define exactly what is being asserted, identify the system and conditions tested, check whether the measurement matches the claimed ability, test whether results transfer to new and realistic situations, and state what remains uncertain.
That method matters for anyone making a business, investment, policy, or safety decision. “Superintelligence” is a broad and unsettled construct, while most available evidence measures a narrower task under a particular prompt, tool setup, and scoring rule.

What does “superintelligent AI” mean in a claim?
It has no universally accepted technical definition or single threshold. A claim may mean performance above the best humans across many intellectual tasks, exceptional ability in one domain, highly autonomous operation, or a forecast about what future systems will do. Those are different propositions and require different evidence.
Start by separating three kinds of statements:
- Capability claims: “This system can discover novel vulnerabilities” or “it solves advanced mathematics problems.” These can be tested against specified tasks.
- Forecasts: “AI will become superintelligent by 2030.” This depends on assumptions about research progress, deployment, resources, and bottlenecks; it is not a measurement of a current system.
- Impact or risk claims: “A future system could destabilize markets” or “this model is safe.” These involve behavior, access, incentives, and safeguards in addition to raw capability.
Google DeepMind’s proposed AGI taxonomy is useful for keeping terms separate: assess performance (how well tasks are done), generality (how many kinds of tasks are covered), and autonomy (how independently and for how long the system can pursue goals). It is an organizing framework, not a settled definition of superintelligence.

No cited source publishes a statistic that directly measures or defines superintelligence. A number from a narrow test must therefore remain a number about that test unless additional evidence justifies a broader inference.
How do you turn a headline into a testable proposition?
Write down the claim before looking at the most impressive chart or demonstration. A precise record prevents a broad label from silently replacing a proposition that can be checked.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Copy the exact wording. Record who made the statement and when. Preserve qualifiers such as “can,” “usually,” “in principle,” or “on average.”
- Name the object. Is the claim about a base model, a model with browsing or code tools, an orchestrated product, a human-AI team, or a future scenario? These are not interchangeable units of analysis.
- Specify the comparison. “Better than humans” could mean better than a novice, a typical worker, a specialist, or the best recorded human result. Ask which baseline is intended.
- Define the threshold. What would count as success, on which tasks, with what error rate, and for how many repeated attempts?
- Separate present evidence from prediction. A trend observed in one evaluation domain cannot by itself establish a date for a future milestone.
For financial or strategic decisions, keep the original claim and your narrowed, testable version side by side. For example, “already superintelligent” might become: “System X, version Y, completes a specified set of novel research tasks at or above an identified expert baseline, with a stated reliability and without undisclosed human intervention.” If the claimant will not specify the proposition, confidence should remain low regardless of the publicity.
What does a benchmark score actually prove?
A score directly establishes performance under the benchmark’s rules. It does not automatically establish general intelligence, understanding, real-world competence, or superintelligence.
The inference has two links: the test must be valid for the ability it claims to measure, and performance must transfer beyond the tested items and setup. A language model can obtain a high score by exploiting regularities in a task, receiving extensive scaffolding, or having encountered similar examples during training. That result may still be useful, but its scope must be stated.
| Claim level | What is directly observed | What additional evidence is needed |
|---|---|---|
| Task ability | Accuracy, completion rate, or score on a named task set | Clear scoring, enough items, repeated runs, and an uncertainty estimate |
| Domain competence | Performance across several related tasks | Novel examples, varied prompts, appropriate expert baselines, and checks for contamination |
| General capability | Results across different domains and environments | Evidence of breadth, robustness, transfer, and consistent performance rather than isolated peaks |
| Superintelligence | No single direct observable currently settles this construct | A clearly defined threshold, broad independent evaluations, and an argument showing why the evidence supports that threshold |
Human-exam results deserve the same caution. An exam can indicate mastery of its questions under its administration rules; it cannot by itself show autonomous research, long-horizon planning, physical-world reliability, or superiority across unrelated fields.

Two reports can describe the same model yet measure materially different systems. Read the methods before interpreting the headline result.
| Check | Questions to ask | Why it changes the conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| Model identity | What version, date, weights, system prompt, and safety settings were used? | “The model” may refer to a moving target, and a later update can change results. |
| Task set | How many items were tested, who wrote them, and were they public? | Small or familiar sets produce noisy estimates and invite memorization. |
| Scoring | What counts as correct? Are partial credit, abstentions, and invalid answers handled consistently? | A scoring rule can reward or hide particular behaviors. |
| Uncertainty | Were runs repeated? Are confidence intervals, variance, or failure rates reported? | A single average can conceal unstable behavior or a few exceptional trials. |
| Prompt and scaffolding | What instructions, retries, chain-of-thought substitutes, agents, or human checks were allowed? | Inference-time assistance may be part of the evaluated system, not an incidental detail. |
| Tools and resources | Could the system browse, execute code, call APIs, use memory, or access a large context window? | Capability depends on the environment; a tool-using system is not equivalent to a model alone. |
| Baseline | Which humans or other systems were compared, under equivalent time and tool conditions? | An inappropriate or asymmetrical baseline can make a result look stronger or weaker than it is. |
| Contamination | Could test items or close variants have appeared in training data or public prompts? | Recall of known material is not the same as solving a novel problem. |
| Validity threats | Were broken questions, reward hacking, strategic refusals, or sandbagging considered? | The observed score may not represent the intended capability. |
The International AI Safety Report (2026) and an OpenAI third-party-evaluation playbook (2026) both emphasize that reliability, access conditions, contamination, broken problems, reward hacking, refusals, and sandbagging can alter interpretation. Treat those as design questions to answer, not as accusations about a particular developer.

How can you tell whether performance transfers beyond the test?
Transfer is the dividing line between “performed on this evaluation” and “has a broad, dependable ability.” Ask for evidence on inputs the system could not have memorized, with prompts and conditions that vary from the original demonstration.
Use novel and adversarial examples
Hold out newly created tasks, change surface wording, alter irrelevant details, and include edge cases. A capable system should retain useful performance when the answer cannot be retrieved by matching a familiar pattern. Report the full distribution of outcomes, not only the best run.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Vary the operating conditions
Test realistic time limits, incomplete information, tool outages, conflicting instructions, and ordinary user errors. Controlled evaluations can overstate deployment performance because production environments contain interruptions, ambiguous goals, and dependencies that a laboratory harness removes.
Look for independent replication
Results are more credible when an unaffiliated team can reproduce them with equivalent access and a published protocol. Independent work should disclose any differences in prompts, model snapshots, tool permissions, and scoring; otherwise apparent disagreement may simply reflect different systems being tested.
Expect a jagged capability profile
The International AI Safety Report describes performance that can be strong in one area and poor or inconsistent in another. A system may solve difficult symbolic questions yet fail simple questions when wording changes, or produce an excellent plan but execute it unreliably. Such unevenness is evidence against compressing a multidimensional profile into one intelligence label.
How do tools and context change what an AI can do?
Observed behavior is a property of a system in an environment, not necessarily of model weights in isolation. The UK Government’s interim scientific report notes that capabilities can be elicited differently by prompts and affordances, including the tools and resources made available.
When reading a result, draw the system boundary explicitly:
- Model-only evaluation: fixed input and output, with no external retrieval or execution.
- Tool-augmented evaluation: browsing, coding, calculators, databases, APIs, or other software are available.
- Agentic evaluation: the system can plan, call tools repeatedly, maintain state, and act over an extended task.
- Human-in-the-loop evaluation: people select prompts, correct errors, choose outputs, or intervene between steps.
These arrangements answer different questions. A tool-enabled agent completing a research workflow may demonstrate useful system-level autonomy without showing that the underlying model has the same ability unaided. Conversely, a model-only failure does not prove that a properly equipped system cannot perform the task. Claims should name the boundary rather than treating the strongest configuration as the model’s universal capability.

What is a fair way to compare two AI systems?
Compare only systems tested under equivalent conditions, and publish enough detail for a reader to see whether the comparison is actually like-for-like.
| Comparison axis | Minimum reporting |
|---|---|
| Performance and breadth | Task-level scores, domains covered, sample sizes, and failure rates |
| Robustness | Results across prompts, seeds, task variants, and repeated runs |
| Autonomy | Longest uninterrupted task, number of steps, intervention rate, and recovery from errors |
| Tools and environment | Exact tools, permissions, context limits, network access, and resource budgets |
| Real-world transfer | Novel tasks, field or operational trials, and evidence from users outside the test team |
| Safety-relevant behavior | Refusal consistency, harmful-capability tests, policy adherence, and failure severity |
| Transparency | Model version, protocol, evaluator independence, and access to underlying data or logs |
| Uncertainty | Confidence intervals, missing data, known validity limits, and unresolved disagreements |
A leaderboard rank is not a fair comparison if one entry receives more retries, a larger context, private tools, or human filtering. If an evaluator cannot obtain equivalent access, label the result as partial rather than presenting it as a definitive ranking.
Can an AI safety test prove that a model is safe?
No. A safety evaluation provides bounded evidence about the system, protocol, threats, and conditions actually tested. It is not a universal safety certificate.
Google DeepMind’s dangerous-capability evaluations illustrate the value and limit of domain-specific testing: a test can probe areas such as cyber, persuasion, or autonomy, but passing or failing one protocol does not settle every future behavior. The UK AI Safety Institute likewise describes its role and findings within a stated scope; its evaluations should not be generalized to all models, versions, or deployment settings.
Independent verification can strengthen confidence, yet the UN Scientific Advisory Board has highlighted practical challenges. Auditors may lack model access, logs, compute, or the ability to inspect proprietary safeguards. Technical verification methods also have implementation limits. A credible report should therefore disclose what was inaccessible and how that restriction affects confidence.
Read the following warning signs closely:
- Reward hacking: the system optimizes the measured objective while missing the intended goal.
- Strategic refusals: refusals reduce a measured risk but may obscure what the system would do under a different prompt or permission set.
- Sandbagging: performance changes when the system detects an evaluation or when incentives differ.
- Broken problems: ambiguous, unsolvable, or incorrectly scored tasks create misleading pass or fail rates.
Safety claims should state residual risks, not only the number of tests passed. For a financial decision, ask whether the tested safeguards remain in place in the product configuration you would actually use.
How should you interpret a failure or a missing capability?
A failure to elicit a capability in one test does not establish that the capability is absent. Prompts, tools, context, and incentives can prevent a system from displaying an ability it might show under other conditions.
The reverse is equally important: one successful demonstration does not establish reliability or generality. Ask whether the result was repeatable, whether a different evaluator obtained it, and whether the system can recognize and recover from its own errors. Preserve the distinction between not observed, observed inconsistently, and shown reliably under stated conditions; these are materially different conclusions.

When evidence is incomplete, use calibrated language such as “demonstrated on the tested task,” “evidence is mixed across prompts,” or “not established outside the evaluated environment.” Avoid converting a lack of data into either a reassuring claim or a catastrophic one.
What do current progress figures actually show?
Trend statistics can indicate that selected capabilities are improving, but they do not supply a universal growth law or a superintelligence timetable.
The UK AI Security Institute reported that performance in some of its tested areas had doubled every eight months. That is a trend in the institute’s selected evaluation domains, not a claim that every AI capability doubles at that rate. The same 2026 reporting said cyber models completed apprentice-level tasks 50% of the time on average, compared with just over 10% in early 2024. Those percentages belong to the institute’s specific cyber evaluation and test context; they should not be generalized to all models or all forms of cyber work.
Before using a trend in a forecast, check which tasks improved, whether the test set changed, whether tool access or scaffolding changed, and whether the result was replicated. A rising curve can reflect genuine capability gains, improved elicitation, a better test harness, or some combination. Without separating those effects, extrapolation is speculation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you evaluate predictions about when AI will become superintelligent?
There is no consensus method that produces a reliable arrival date. The UK Government’s International Scientific Report states: “The future of general-purpose AI (artificial intelligence) technology is uncertain, with a wide range of trajectories appearing possible even in the near future, including both very positive and very negative outcomes.”
Evaluate a timeline as a conditional forecast:
- Identify the horizon and milestone. “By 2030” is incomplete unless the forecaster defines what counts as superintelligence and how it will be measured.
- List technical assumptions. Ask what must improve in reasoning, data, compute, memory, robotics, or reliability.
- List deployment assumptions. A capability may exist in a laboratory yet take longer to reach users because of cost, regulation, security, or integration constraints.
- Check for bottlenecks and alternatives. A forecast should discuss failure modes and slower paths, not only an optimistic extrapolation.
- Update against observed evidence. Treat each new evaluation as evidence about specified capabilities, not as automatic confirmation of the entire forecast.
Separate a forecast about capability from a forecast about social impact. Even if a technical milestone arrives, its economic or safety consequences depend on access, incentives, institutions, and safeguards.

Use this sequence whenever a press release, investment pitch, research paper, or social-media post makes a sweeping AI claim.
- Quote the claim narrowly. Record the wording, speaker, date, and object being discussed.
- Name the construct. Decide whether the statement concerns task performance, generality, autonomy, safety, risk, or a forecast.
- Write down the observable measure. Specify the task, score, sample, baseline, and success rule.
- Reconstruct the setup. Note model version, prompt, tools, scaffolding, retries, human involvement, and resource limits.
- Check validity. Look for contamination, broken items, reward hacking, strategic refusals, and sandbagging.
- Inspect uncertainty. Require repeated runs, variance or confidence intervals, and a full accounting of failures.
- Probe transfer. Seek novel tasks, varied prompts, realistic environments, tool failures, and independent replication.
- Compare like with like. Equalize access, time, tools, and scoring before ranking systems.
- Bound the conclusion. State exactly what the evidence supports and what it does not establish.
- Label the unknowns. For forecasts and safety claims, list assumptions, missing access, unresolved validity issues, and plausible alternative outcomes.
This process is useful for personal-finance decisions because it converts an exciting but vague claim into documented assumptions. You can then decide whether the evidence is strong enough for the size and reversibility of the decision, without pretending that uncertainty has disappeared.

What would stronger evidence for a superintelligence claim look like?
A persuasive case would need more than a record score. It would define the threshold in advance, test a broad and independently created task portfolio, use appropriate expert baselines, report uncertainty and failures, and show robust transfer to novel settings. The evaluation would identify whether the subject is a model, a tool-using system, or an autonomous product and would make that boundary impossible to miss.
Independent teams would need enough access to replicate the protocol, while reports would document contamination checks, prompts, tools, interventions, and any changes made during testing. Even then, the conclusion should remain proportional: strong evidence of broad, reliable performance under specified conditions is not the same as a timeless guarantee about every future environment.
How should a reader state the final judgment?
Use a three-part conclusion: observed result, supported inference, and remaining uncertainty. For example: “The system completed 82% of the published tasks with browsing enabled. This supports strong performance on that task family under the stated setup. It does not establish general superintelligence, real-world reliability, or a forecast date.”
That wording is less dramatic than a label, but it is more useful. It tells a decision-maker what has been measured, what can reasonably be inferred, and which unknowns still deserve attention.
Frequently Asked Questions
How should a company document an AI capability claim for investors?
Keep a dated evidence file containing the exact claim, model or product version, test protocol, prompts, tools, human interventions, raw results, failures, and uncertainty estimates. Have someone who was not involved in building the demonstration review whether the conclusion goes beyond the measured task.
What is a capability-elicitation test?
It is a test that varies prompts, tools, context, or incentives to determine whether a system can display an ability that a single default interaction might miss. Results should record the conditions that elicited the behavior, because elicited performance is not automatically stable performance.

Why can two credible labs report different results for the same AI model?
They may use different snapshots, system prompts, tool permissions, time limits, task samples, or scoring rules. Reconcile those conditions before treating the results as a contradiction; if they are equivalent, the difference itself is evidence of variance that should be reported.
What should you do when an evaluation is confidential?
Ask for a public description of the task family, setup, sample size, scoring, and limitations even if raw items cannot be released. Treat undisclosed methods and inaccessible logs as uncertainty, and avoid relying on a confidential pass rate as the sole basis for a high-stakes decision.
