A sharp drop in Cameco shares is not, by itself, evidence that the stock is cheap. To judge whether the business outlook has worsened or investors are simply paying a lower valuation, check the share-price move against operating results, contract economics, execution risks and current valuation inputs. Cameco’s Q2 2026 results, released July 31, offer dated operating and balance-sheet data; they do not establish what the shares are worth today.
First, establish what actually fell
A secondary Yahoo Finance article published October 3, 2026, described Cameco shares as down 24% over three months. Treat that as a reported characterization, not a verified return: the exact dates, exchange, currency, closing prices and treatment of dividends need to be checked before relying on the figure.

Define the comparison before interpreting it. Cameco trades as CCJ on the NYSE in U.S. dollars and as CCO on the Toronto Stock Exchange in Canadian dollars. Specify whether you mean a peak-to-trough move or a trailing period, closing prices or intraday prices, and price return or total return. Then compare the same dates with uranium price indicators, other uranium equities, a broad market index and the Canadian-dollar/U.S.-dollar exchange rate. A fall shared across the sector or wider market may have a different explanation from a company-specific decline.
Did Cameco’s business outlook change?
Separate revised business expectations from a lower price investors are willing to pay for similar expectations. Look for changes in production guidance, costs, delivery commitments, realized prices, required purchases and cash generation. The Q2 2026 report is a dated checkpoint, not a guarantee about later results.
#1 Best Overall
Production and execution
As of its July 31, 2026 Q2 update, Cameco kept its 2026 attributable uranium-production guidance at 19.5–21.5 million pounds of U3O8. Its share of Q2 production was 3.9 million pounds. The company reported challenging spring road conditions and temporary disruptions at Key Lake/McArthur River and Cigar Lake, but said these had not changed guidance at that time. Subsequent operating conditions could alter the outlook.
When reviewing later updates, test actual output at Cigar Lake and McArthur River/Key Lake against guidance. Also watch transportation and milling dependencies, unit costs, sustaining and development capital, and whether Cameco needs to buy material to meet delivery obligations. A production target matters less to shareholders if disruptions, cost inflation or purchased material materially weaken the economics of fulfilling sales.
Quarterly earnings need context
Cameco reported Q2 2026 consolidated net earnings of C$25 million, adjusted net earnings of C$77 million and adjusted EBITDA of C$391 million. For the first six months of 2026, it reported net earnings of C$156 million, adjusted net earnings of C$281 million and adjusted EBITDA of C$899 million. Adjusted net earnings and adjusted EBITDA are non-IFRS measures; consider them alongside the IFRS net earnings figure, not as replacements.

Q2 2025 had included about US$170 million of Cameco’s share of Westinghouse revenue and adjusted EBITDA associated with the Dukovany reactor construction project. That project contribution makes a simple year-over-year comparison a poor guide to a recurring earnings run rate.
Uranium-segment results also varied between the quarter and half-year. Cameco reported the following figures in its Q2 2026 report:
| Measure (C$ millions) | Q2 2026 | Q2 2025 | First half 2026 | First half 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uranium-segment earnings before tax | 170 | 281 | 528 | 509 |
| Uranium-segment adjusted EBITDA | 252 | 352 | 676 | 641 |
Cameco attributed the quarter comparisons to normal delivery variation and lower planned 2026 sales delivery volumes under its contracting strategy. The stronger first-half 2026 uranium-segment figures compared with the first half of 2025 illustrate why a single quarter should not stand in for the business trend.
How do contracts affect the uranium-price story?
Cameco is not a one-for-one proxy for the day’s uranium spot price. Its realized price and cash flow depend on its portfolio of contracts, delivery timing, pricing mechanisms, inventory and purchased material. A spot-price move may therefore affect earnings with a lag, and not in the same proportion.

Commitments were higher than average in 2026–2028 and lower in 2029–2030. Management also said it intended to add volumes selectively using market-related pricing mechanisms. For an investor, the key question is not just whether uranium prices are rising or falling, but how those prices feed through Cameco’s contract book and the cost of supplying it.
Inventory and purchase prices are part of that calculation. Cameco reported 8.7 million pounds of uranium inventory at an average cost of C$58.05 per pound at June 30, 2026. Q2 purchases were 2.8 million pounds at an average C$91.40 per pound (US$66.60 per pound). These figures describe inventory and purchases at that date and during that quarter; they do not alone establish the cost or margin on future deliveries.
Is Westinghouse masking or adding to the uranium picture?
Assess Cameco’s uranium and fuel-services businesses separately from its equity-accounted investment in Westinghouse. In the Q2 2026 report, Cameco’s share of Westinghouse adjusted EBITDA was C$163 million in Q2 2026 versus C$352 million in Q2 2025; for the first half, it was C$284 million versus C$445 million. These are company-reported adjusted measures. The prior-year Dukovany contribution is a reason not to project that quarter’s Westinghouse result forward as ordinary recurring earnings.
For comparisons across periods, identify whether a change comes from uranium operations, fuel services or Westinghouse. Then decide how much confidence to place in each stream’s persistence and what valuation method suits it. Combining them into one headline earnings trend can obscure very different drivers.

At June 30, 2026, Cameco reported C$1.1 billion in cash and C$1.0 billion in total debt, along with an undrawn C$1.0 billion revolving credit facility. Those are dated balance-sheet figures. To evaluate financial flexibility today, use the latest reported cash, debt, credit availability and capital requirements rather than assuming these amounts remain unchanged.
Cameco’s Q2 2026 outlook estimated an average realized uranium price of C$91–C$96 per pound and uranium revenue of C$2.70–C$2.91 billion for 2026. It estimated fuel-services revenue of C$610–C$650 million and consolidated revenue of C$3.32–C$3.57 billion. These are company estimates, not achieved results. The Q2 MD&A said financial performance and cash generation depend on sourcing material needed for planned deliveries and achieving production plans.
How can you tell whether the stock is cheaper?
A price decline is not a valuation measure. The available figures do not establish a current P/E, EV/EBITDA, price-to-NAV, intrinsic value or peer comparison. To decide whether the shares are cheaper, rebuild valuation with date-matched inputs: share price, shares outstanding, cash, debt, relevant equity or minority interests, and current earnings or cash-flow estimates. Do not apply an old earnings denominator to a new share price without checking what changed in the business.
Use more than one lens where practical. Compare normalized through-cycle earnings or cash flow with asset value, and make assumptions explicit for uranium prices, production, costs, contract rollovers and Westinghouse. For peer comparisons, align dates and currencies and examine contract coverage, pricing mechanisms, attributable output, production reliability, cost profile, inventory, purchase requirements, capital spending and non-uranium earnings. A peer multiple is not informative if the businesses have materially different exposures or risk.
A practical review checklist
- Measure the drawdown consistently. Record the dates, listing, currency, price basis and return method; compare matching periods across relevant market benchmarks.
- Check for estimate changes. Read the latest company results and guidance for revisions to production, costs, deliveries, realized prices, purchases and expected cash generation.
- Trace uranium economics through contracts. Evaluate spot and term prices alongside contract commitments, pricing provisions, inventory and material needed to make deliveries.
- Separate earnings streams. Review uranium, fuel services and Westinghouse independently, and normalize unusual project-related contributions before extrapolating.
- Refresh the valuation inputs. Recalculate using current market and financial data, and test more than one plausible operating and commodity-price scenario.
If the operating assumptions remain sound but the market multiple has fallen, the shares may be less expensive than before—but that still does not prove they are undervalued. If expected cash flows or execution prospects have deteriorated, the lower price may reflect a weaker outlook rather than a bargain. The evidence here supports a framework for judging the difference, not a personalized buy-or-sell conclusion.
