Broadcom stock cannot be judged from its AI growth rate or a single earnings multiple. The useful approach is to separate semiconductor solutions from infrastructure software, test whether growth converts into durable GAAP profit and free cash flow, measure debt against recurring cash generation, and then apply a dated valuation to explicit upside, base, and downside cases. The latest information available for this analysis runs through Broadcom’s third quarter of fiscal 2026, ended August 2, 2026 and released September 2, 2026.
What Broadcom does and why the segment split matters
Broadcom is a hybrid semiconductor and infrastructure-software company. That combination can produce strong cash generation, but it also makes a blended growth or valuation figure less informative. Semiconductor demand is affected by product cycles, cloud and artificial-intelligence infrastructure spending, customer concentration and manufacturing capacity. Infrastructure software has different economics: contract terms, renewal behavior, subscription transitions, integration execution and competition matter more.

| Semiconductor solutions | $36.858 billion | Approximately 57.7% | Networking, custom AI accelerators and AI networking products |
| Infrastructure software | $27.029 billion | Approximately 42.3% | VMware Cloud Foundation, including non-cancellable license contracts and transition to subscription licensing |
| Total | $63.887 billion | 100% | 24% year-over-year growth |
The percentages above are calculated from the company’s reported segment and total revenue. Do not assume the FY2025 mix is a permanent target. In the third quarter of fiscal 2026, semiconductors represented a much larger portion of sales than they did for the full prior year.

Is Broadcom stock overvalued?
There is no defensible yes-or-no answer without a dated share price, diluted share count and a specified earnings or cash-flow period. The investor-center page available for this analysis displayed a stock module but did not expose a usable current price or market capitalization. Because the share price changes continuously, publishing a current P/E, price-to-sales or enterprise-value multiple without those inputs would create false precision.
Build the valuation from dated inputs
- Record the closing share price and date from a reliable market-data source.
- Obtain diluted weighted-average shares for the trailing period or the share count appropriate to the forward estimate. State whether options, restricted stock and other dilution are included.
- Calculate equity value as share price multiplied by diluted shares.
- Use the latest balance-sheet date to add debt and subtract cash when calculating enterprise value. Keep leases and other adjustments consistent with the peer set.
- Choose one basis—trailing GAAP earnings, forward GAAP earnings, operating cash flow or free cash flow—and use the same period for every company in the comparison.
- Stress the result with at least base, upside and downside operating cases rather than relying on one target multiple.
A valuation is only as coherent as its denominator. A high-growth semiconductor quarter should not automatically be annualized, and non-GAAP earnings should not be compared with a GAAP peer multiple. Broadcom’s acquisition-related intangible amortization and other adjustments can make the difference material.
Scenario framework
| Scenario | Semiconductor assumptions | Software assumptions | Profit and cash tests | Valuation interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upside | AI networking and custom-accelerator demand remains strong without a material customer or supply interruption | Renewals hold, VMware pricing and subscription transition progress with limited churn | GAAP margin remains strong after amortization; free-cash-flow conversion stays high; debt falls | Higher earnings and lower net debt can support a premium multiple, but only if the share price already discounts less growth than the scenario delivers |
| Base | AI growth moderates from the latest exceptional rate and other semiconductor products follow a normal cycle | Contract revenue and subscriptions grow, with some integration and renewal friction | Cash generation remains substantial after capital spending, dividends, taxes and buybacks | Value the business on normalized forward GAAP earnings or free cash flow, not on one quarter’s run rate |
| Downside | Cloud or AI infrastructure orders are delayed, a large customer reduces volume, or supply constraints limit shipments | Customer acceptance, competition or renewals pressure growth and margin | GAAP margin compresses, free cash flow falls and refinancing becomes more expensive | A high starting multiple can contract even if revenue still grows |
Management’s Q4 FY2026 guidance was approximately $34.8 billion of revenue and non-GAAP operating income of approximately 66% of projected revenue. Broadcom also warned that actual results may vary materially. Treat that guidance as one operating input, not guaranteed earnings or a valuation floor.
How fast is Broadcom growing, and what is driving it?
FY2025 growth
FY2025 revenue increased 24% year over year. The Form 10-K attributed semiconductor growth to networking demand, including custom AI accelerators and AI networking products. Infrastructure-software growth was driven mainly by VMware Cloud Foundation, including license revenue on contracts customers cannot terminate and the transition toward subscription licensing.
Q3 FY2026 results
The September 2, 2026 results release reported Q3 FY2026 revenue of $29.591 billion, up 67% year over year. Semiconductor solutions generated $20.839 billion, up 127%, while infrastructure software generated $8.752 billion, up 29%.

| Q3 FY2026 measure | Reported result | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Total revenue | $29.591 billion | 67% |
| Semiconductor solutions | $20.839 billion | 127% |
| Infrastructure software | $8.752 billion | 29% |
| AI semiconductor revenue | $16.7 billion | 221%, according to management |
President and CEO Hock Tan said in the company release: “AI semiconductor revenue grew 221% year-over-year to a record $16.7 billion in the third quarter.” That is management’s report of company results. It is not an independent forecast, and the quarter’s unusually high semiconductor mix should not be treated as a normalized annual run rate.
Questions that test the quality of growth
- How much of semiconductor growth comes from repeatable programs and how much comes from a small number of large AI customers?
- Are networking and custom-accelerator orders backed by multiyear commitments, or can customers change timing and volume quickly?
- Does software growth reflect durable subscription renewals, or a temporary licensing step-up during the VMware transition?
- Are reported sales growing faster than receivables, indicating that cash collection is keeping pace?
- Does the segment mix change the company’s sustainable margin and capital needs?
How profitable is Broadcom?
GAAP margins first
FY2025 GAAP gross profit was $43.294 billion, equal to 68% of revenue, versus 63% in FY2024. Broadcom attributed the improvement to higher software revenue, strong demand for AI-related semiconductor products and higher infrastructure-software gross margin after VMware integration.
For Q3 FY2026, reported GAAP gross profit was $20.456 billion on revenue of $29.591 billion. Dividing those company figures gives a calculated GAAP gross margin of approximately 69.1%. This is a calculation, not a separately reported percentage.
Why non-GAAP results can look different
Broadcom also reports non-GAAP gross and operating measures. Its reconciliation excludes acquisition-related intangible amortization, stock-based compensation, restructuring and other charges, and other adjustments. The company explicitly states that non-GAAP measures are not substitutes for, or superior to, GAAP measures.
| Measure | What it tells you | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| GAAP gross margin | Profit after all reported cost of revenue, including acquisition-related amortization | Whether margin remains durable as acquisition amortization and product mix change |
| Non-GAAP gross or operating margin | Management’s view of underlying operating performance after specified exclusions | Size and persistence of exclusions, especially amortization and stock compensation |
| Operating cash flow | Cash generated by operations before capital expenditures | Working-capital swings, taxes, interest and the conversion of profit into cash |
| Free cash flow | Cash left after capital expenditures under the company’s stated definition | Whether dividends, buybacks, acquisitions and debt repayment are also affordable |
A wide gap between GAAP and adjusted earnings is not automatically a problem, but it must be understood. Acquisition amortization is a real accounting consequence of buying businesses; it may not require a current-period cash payment, yet it represents the consumption of acquired intangible assets. Compare both measures over time and explain every large reconciliation item before using an adjusted multiple.

| Balance-sheet item | Amount at August 2, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Cash and equivalents | $24.0 billion |
| Short-term debt | $2.252 billion |
| Long-term debt | $57.167 billion |
| Combined reported debt | Approximately $59.419 billion, calculated |
| Simple net-debt estimate | Approximately $35.4 billion, calculated as $59.419 billion minus $24.0 billion |
The net-debt figure is a simple calculation from the reported amounts, not a substitute for the company’s full debt and liquidity disclosures. For a complete leverage assessment, read the latest Form 10-Q for interest rates, maturities, covenants, restricted cash, leases and subsequent financing activity.
Cash generation and capital allocation
Q3 FY2026 operating cash flow was $14.197 billion, and capital expenditures were $532 million. Subtracting the latter from the former implies quarterly free cash flow of approximately $13.665 billion. That is a calculation; use Broadcom’s own free-cash-flow definition and reconciliation when quoting a formal company figure.
Broadcom paid a quarterly dividend of $0.65 per share in Q3, totaling $3.1 billion. Debt capacity therefore depends on more than operating cash flow. Deduct capital spending, dividends, buybacks, taxes, interest and acquisition spending, then test whether the remainder can reduce debt through a weaker semiconductor cycle.
Debt-capacity checklist
- Compare total and net debt with recurring, not peak-quarter, operating cash flow.
- Review interest expense and the schedule of maturities in the latest 10-Q.
- Stress-test refinancing at higher interest rates and with lower semiconductor cash flow.
- Check whether acquisitions or shareholder returns could slow debt reduction.
- Track net debt after each quarterly report rather than relying on one leverage ratio.
Is Broadcom’s AI growth sustainable?
The latest evidence is powerful but concentrated. Management reported AI semiconductor revenue of $16.7 billion in Q3 FY2026, up 221% year over year, within a quarter in which semiconductor solutions rose 127% overall. Sustainability requires that this demand persist across customers, products and periods without forcing down margins or increasing working-capital needs.

Evidence supporting durability
- AI networking and custom accelerators are identified drivers of the semiconductor segment in the FY2025 filing.
- Q3 growth was large enough to affect the company’s total revenue, not merely a small product line.
- High gross margins and low reported capital expenditures produced substantial operating cash flow in Q3.
Evidence that calls for caution
- A 221% growth rate creates a difficult comparison base and is unlikely to be a permanent percentage growth rate.
- The company identifies customer concentration and changes in demand timing or volume as risks.
- AI semiconductor demand is exposed to cloud-capital-spending cycles, product transitions and manufacturing capacity.
- A large quarter from a few customers can make total-company results look more diversified than they are.
How to monitor sustainability each quarter
- Separate AI semiconductor revenue from the rest of semiconductor solutions when management discloses it.
- Compare growth with gross margin, receivables and operating cash flow; rapid sales growth without cash conversion deserves investigation.
- Look for evidence of repeat orders, design wins and production ramps rather than only headline backlog language.
- Track software renewals separately so a semiconductor surge does not conceal weakness in the other segment.
- Rebuild the valuation whenever the growth rate, margin mix or net-debt trajectory changes.
Risks Broadcom itself identifies
Broadcom’s filings describe risks rather than predict that any one event will occur. The principal categories include:
- Semiconductor cyclicality and industry change: demand can shift quickly, particularly as AI architectures and networking standards evolve.
- Customer concentration: the loss of a significant customer or a change in its order timing or volume could affect results.
- Manufacturing and suppliers: Broadcom relies on contract manufacturers and a limited number of suppliers, creating capacity and disruption exposure.
- Competitive execution: the company must continue winning semiconductor programs and maintaining product competitiveness.
- Software acceptance: customers may resist pricing, integration or subscription changes, affecting renewals and margins.
- Margin pressure: product mix, pricing, acquisition integration and operating costs can reduce profitability.
- Indebtedness: substantial debt requires sufficient cash to service and repay obligations, especially during a weaker cycle.
Use these disclosures as prompts for measurable checks: customer and product concentration, renewal rates, gross-margin movement, supplier capacity, debt maturities and cash after all capital-allocation commitments.
A repeatable step-by-step Broadcom stock evaluation
- Set the information date. Use the latest 10-K, 10-Q and earnings release available on the day you analyze the stock. For this framework, the latest located results are Q3 FY2026, and the filing index listed a September 10, 2026 Form 10-Q.
- Rebuild segment revenue. Record semiconductor solutions and infrastructure software separately for at least several periods. Note whether growth comes from volume, price, acquisitions, licensing changes or subscriptions.
- Normalize the quarter. Compare Q3 FY2026’s $29.591 billion with prior periods, but do not multiply one unusually strong semiconductor quarter by four without testing seasonality and customer timing.
- Review GAAP profitability. Start with GAAP gross and operating profit. Then reconcile non-GAAP adjustments, identifying recurring stock compensation and acquisition amortization.
- Convert profit to cash. Examine operating cash flow, capital expenditures, working capital, taxes and interest. In Q3 FY2026, the simple operating-cash-flow-minus-capital-expenditure calculation was about $13.665 billion.
- Measure debt capacity. Start with the August 2, 2026 reported debt and cash, then examine maturities, interest costs and post-dividend cash available for repayment.
- Price scenarios. Insert a dated share price and diluted share count, calculate equity value and enterprise value, and apply consistent trailing or forward GAAP and cash-flow measures.
- Write the disconfirming case. State what would invalidate the thesis: slower AI orders, customer loss, software-renewal pressure, margin compression, weak cash conversion or debt that fails to decline.
- Update after every report. Recalculate segment growth, GAAP margin, free-cash-flow conversion, net debt and valuation instead of carrying forward stale assumptions.
How to compare Broadcom with other investments
A single peer multiple can obscure the differences between Broadcom’s businesses. Compare companies on consistent periods and accounting definitions using the following axes:
| Comparison axis | Why it matters | How to make it comparable |
|---|---|---|
| Segment-adjusted growth | AI semiconductors and enterprise software have different cycles | Compare each segment with businesses that have similar drivers |
| GAAP gross and operating margins | Adjusted margins may exclude different costs | Use GAAP first, then show reconciled adjustments |
| Cash conversion | Accounting profit does not guarantee spendable cash | Compare operating cash flow and free cash flow after capital spending |
| Net debt relative to recurring cash flow | Peak-quarter cash flow can overstate repayment ability | Use a normalized period and include interest, dividends and acquisitions |
| Customer and product concentration | Concentration increases downside from one lost account or program | Read concentration disclosures and test a customer-volume decline |
| Valuation | Different growth and margin profiles justify different multiples | Use the same trailing or forward denominator and a dated price |
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Using an undated multiple
Mistake: quoting a current P/E or enterprise-value multiple without stating the closing date, share count or earnings basis. Fix: timestamp every market input and identify whether the denominator is trailing or forward GAAP, adjusted earnings or free cash flow.

Mixing GAAP and non-GAAP figures
Mistake: comparing a non-GAAP operating margin with a GAAP valuation or peer result. Fix: label every measure and explain acquisition amortization, stock compensation, restructuring and other exclusions.
Calling gross profit free cash flow
Mistake: inferring cash available to shareholders from a margin percentage. Fix: start with operating cash flow, subtract capital expenditures and then account for dividends, buybacks, taxes, interest and acquisitions.
Ignoring the balance-sheet date
Mistake: combining August 2, 2026 debt with a later cash figure or an earlier share price. Fix: keep the cash, debt and valuation inputs date-consistent and identify every calculated amount.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBottom line
Broadcom combines unusually fast AI-linked semiconductor growth with a large infrastructure-software business, high reported gross margins and substantial cash generation. It also carries about $59.419 billion of reported debt before cash, depends on customer and supplier relationships, and has a valuation that cannot be responsibly stated without current market data. The disciplined conclusion is therefore conditional: the stock is attractive only at a price that still compensates you for moderating AI growth, software-transition execution, GAAP-versus-adjusted profit differences and the company’s debt obligations. Recalculate that conclusion whenever a new filing, earnings release or market price changes the inputs.
