How to evaluate Berkshire Hathaway’s stock using its annual report and book value

The disciplined way to evaluate Berkshire Hathaway is to use book value as an audited starting point, not as a stand-alone estimate of what the company is worth. Calculate Berkshire shareholders’ equity per equivalent share, follow that figure over several years, separate the investment portfolio from the operating companies, normalize earnings, and then compare a conservative intrinsic-value range with the current BRK.A or BRK.B market price.

The latest full-year figures available for this framework are from Berkshire Hathaway’s 2025 annual report, for the year ended December 31, 2025. They provide a reference point; the share price, cash balance, portfolio values, insurance results, repurchases, interest rates and catastrophe experience must be refreshed with the latest filing and a current market quote before making an investment decision.

Use the audited balance sheet as your starting point

Open the consolidated balance sheet in Berkshire Hathaway’s 2025 annual report and use the line for shareholders’ equity attributable to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders. Do not use total equity if it includes noncontrolling interests: those interests belong to other owners and would overstate the equity attributable to Berkshire investors.

At December 31, 2025, Berkshire reported $717.419 billion of shareholders’ equity attributable to Berkshire shareholders. The same filing reported 1,438,223 equivalent Class A shares outstanding. Dividing those two reported amounts produces a derived book value of approximately $498,843 per equivalent Class A share. Berkshire does not present that derived number as a separate company metric, so label it as your calculation and retain the date and inputs.

2025 annual-report item Amount How to use it
Shareholders’ equity attributable to Berkshire shareholders $717.419 billion at December 31, 2025 Use this numerator; exclude noncontrolling interests.
Equivalent Class A shares outstanding 1,438,223 at December 31, 2025 Use the year-end equivalent share count for a year-end book-value calculation.
Derived book value per equivalent Class A share Approximately $498,843 $717.419 billion divided by 1,438,223; calculated from the reported figures, not a separately reported Berkshire metric.
Economic book value per Class B share Approximately $332.56 Approximately one-fifteen-hundredth of the Class A amount because each Class B share has one-fifteen-hundredth of Class A distribution rights.
Net earnings attributable to Berkshire shareholders $66.968 billion in 2025 A reported GAAP result that includes volatile investment gains and losses; do not treat it as a complete intrinsic-value estimate.
Net earnings per average equivalent Class A share $46,563 in 2025 Reported GAAP per-share earnings, useful for reconciliation but not a substitute for normalized earnings.
Insurance float Approximately $176 billion at December 31, 2025 Analyze its durability and cost rather than adding the balance mechanically to equity value.

For a Class B calculation, divide the Class A book-value result by 1,500. The resulting $332.56 is an economic equivalence, not a live quote and not an estimate of intrinsic value. Small differences can arise from rounding, the exact share-count convention and the date used.

Calculate book value correctly for BRK.A and BRK.B

Use the right numerator

Book value is the accounting equity left for Berkshire shareholders after liabilities are deducted from assets. Berkshire’s balance sheet contains assets and liabilities associated with controlled subsidiaries, insurance contracts and investments, as well as interests owned by noncontrolling shareholders. The relevant numerator is therefore shareholders’ equity attributable to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders.

Use an equivalent share count

Berkshire has two publicly traded classes. Class A carries 1,500 times the economic distribution rights of Class B. Converting all shares to an equivalent Class A count lets you divide one equity figure by one consistent unit. You can instead calculate Class B book value directly by dividing the Class A result by 1,500.

Keep the date attached to every result

A year-end book-value-per-share figure is a snapshot. Equity changes with markets, earnings, currency movements, insurance assumptions and repurchases. A quote obtained months later may be compared with that snapshot for orientation, but the comparison is not a real-time valuation unless you update equity and shares with a later filing or a carefully constructed estimate.

Track the multi-year trend instead of one ratio

One price-to-book ratio can be misleading. Build a spreadsheet with at least five years of annual-report data: shareholders’ equity attributable to Berkshire shareholders, equivalent shares, book value per share, marketable securities, cash and Treasury bills, debt, deferred taxes, operating earnings and insurance float. Calculate the year-over-year change in book value per equivalent share and annotate the reason for large movements.

What can move book value sharply

  • Retained earnings: profitable subsidiaries increase equity when earnings are retained rather than distributed.
  • Unrealized investment gains and losses: marketable securities are marked to market, so a stock-market rally or decline can change book value even when Berkshire’s operating companies have not changed.
  • Foreign-currency translation: exchange-rate changes can alter the reported dollar value of foreign operations and investments.
  • Long-duration insurance-contract assumptions: changes in discount rates used for long-duration contracts can affect reported liabilities and equity.
  • Repurchases and share-count changes: buying shares below accounting value can increase per-share book value, while issuing shares or using equity for acquisitions can change the denominator and ownership structure.

Compare book-value growth with operating-earnings growth. If book value rises mostly because of unrealized security gains, that is a different source of value creation from higher recurring earnings at BNSF, Berkshire Hathaway Energy, insurance or the manufacturing, service and retailing businesses.

Understand why Buffett calls book value a limited-use measure

Warren E. Buffett wrote in Berkshire’s owner manual: “Meanwhile, we regularly report our per-share book value, an easily calculable number, though one of limited use.” The limitation is structural. Accounting values for controlled companies can be far below or above what those businesses are economically worth, while marketable securities are remeasured frequently.

A manufacturing plant, railroad network, utility system or consumer brand may be carried at historical cost less depreciation even if its earning power has increased. Conversely, an acquired business can include accounting goodwill that does not correspond to future cash generation. Insurance liabilities also depend on estimates of claims, timing and discount rates. Book value is therefore an anchor for comparison, not a precise liquidation value or a company-supplied intrinsic-value target.

Intrinsic value is itself an estimate. It changes when interest rates, expected cash flows, competitive conditions, tax rules or catastrophe assumptions change. A valuation that gives a false impression of precision is less useful than a range with explicit assumptions.

Separate the investment portfolio from operating businesses

A practical Berkshire valuation has at least two major components: the investment portfolio and the operating businesses. Read the notes for each component rather than treating consolidated assets as one homogeneous pool.

Value investments and liquidity first

Identify marketable equity securities, U.S. Treasury bills and other cash equivalents. Consider the tax consequences of realizing securities gains, and distinguish cash that is genuinely available at the parent from cash held inside regulated insurance or other subsidiaries. Review debt and other obligations before assigning value to the liquid assets.

Analyze operating subsidiaries separately

Read the segment disclosures for insurance, BNSF, Berkshire Hathaway Energy, and the manufacturing, service and retailing businesses. For each segment, examine normalized after-tax earnings or cash flow, reinvestment needs, capital intensity, cyclicality, competitive advantages and the quality of management. A railroad with heavy maintenance spending should not be valued on the same multiple as an asset-light service company; a regulated utility has different financing and return constraints from a manufacturer.

Build a conservative sum-of-the-parts range

One workable structure is:

  1. Start with the market value of investments and cash, using the latest balance-sheet date and adjusting for taxes that would be incurred if securities were sold.
  2. Estimate normalized after-tax earnings or cash flow for each operating segment. Exclude temporary spikes and identify maintenance capital expenditure, working-capital needs and other cash claims.
  3. Apply valuation multiples or capitalization rates that reflect each segment’s growth, cyclicality, leverage, regulation and competitive position. Use a low and high case rather than one point estimate.
  4. Subtract parent-company debt, deferred taxes, insurance and other obligations that are not already reflected in the segment values. Avoid subtracting a liability twice.
  5. Divide the resulting low and high equity values by the current equivalent share count for a per-share range. Use the Class B conversion consistently when analyzing BRK.B.

This approach does not require assigning a separate dollar value to every Berkshire asset. It requires making the important assumptions visible and checking that liquid assets, operating earnings, taxes, debt and subsidiary cash have not been counted twice.

Normalize earnings before using a price-to-earnings comparison

Berkshire’s GAAP net earnings include investment gains and losses, which can be very large and do not represent a repeatable annual operating result. The 2025 net earnings attributable to Berkshire shareholders of $66.968 billion and $46,563 of net earnings per average equivalent Class A share are reported GAAP figures. They are useful for reconciling the financial statements, but they should not be plugged uncritically into a valuation multiple.

Classify each earnings item

  • Recurring: premiums earned, insurance investment income, railroad and utility operating earnings, and continuing manufacturing, service and retailing profits.
  • Cyclical: businesses whose margins move with freight volumes, energy demand, construction, consumer spending or industrial activity.
  • Mark-to-market: unrealized gains and losses on marketable securities that can reverse without a sale.
  • Catastrophe-related: unusually large insured losses, reserve development or reinsurance results that may not recur on the same schedule.
  • One-time: acquisition accounting, legal settlements, tax changes, restructuring costs or other events identified in the notes.

Construct a normalized earnings figure by starting with segment operating earnings, removing volatile investment marks where appropriate, using a through-cycle catastrophe assumption, and reflecting taxes and recurring capital requirements. Document the years used and why each adjustment is reasonable. Then compare the market price with normalized earnings per equivalent share, not just the latest GAAP EPS.

Analyze insurance float and underwriting economics

Insurance float is premium money Berkshire holds between receiving premiums and paying claims. It can support investments and other operations, but it is not free capital by definition. Its value depends on whether the liabilities are accurately reserved, whether the float grows or contracts, how long it lasts, what assets back it and whether underwriting generates a profit.

Berkshire reported approximately $176 billion of float at December 31, 2025, compared with $171 billion in 2024 and $169 billion in 2023. Its combined insurance operations generated pretax underwriting gains in each of those three years, and the average cost of float was negative in each year. A negative average cost means Berkshire was paid, on average, to hold the float because underwriting gains exceeded the cost of providing insurance.

Questions to ask in the insurance notes

  • Is float growing because of durable premium volume and renewals, or because of a temporary pricing cycle?
  • Are reserves conservative, and does later claim development support earlier estimates?
  • How exposed are results to hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, pandemics or other correlated catastrophes?
  • What portion of the portfolio is invested in short-duration securities, long-duration assets or equities, and how would rates affect income and capital?
  • Does reinsurance transfer risk in a way that improves resilience, or does it introduce concentrated counterparty exposure?

Do not add the $176 billion float balance directly to Berkshire’s equity value. The corresponding insurance obligations remain liabilities. Instead, treat durable, low-cost float as a source of investment capacity and earnings power, and stress-test the value for adverse underwriting years and reserve deterioration.

Compare the market price with book value and normalized value

Obtain a current BRK.A or BRK.B quote separately from the annual report because the filing does not provide a live market price. Then calculate price-to-book using the same date convention as your book-value estimate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Price-to-book ratio = current share price ÷ book value per equivalent share.

For BRK.A, compare the quote with approximately $498,843 only when you are deliberately using the December 31, 2025 book-value snapshot. For BRK.B, compare the quote with approximately $332.56 on the same basis. If a later quarterly filing supplies updated equity and shares, replace the year-end denominator rather than mixing dates without explanation.

Comparison Calculation Interpretation
Price to book Share price divided by book value per equivalent share Shows how much accounting equity the market price represents; sensitive to security prices and accounting carrying values.
Price to normalized operating earnings Share price divided by normalized after-tax operating earnings per equivalent share Tests the price against recurring business economics after removing volatile investment marks and unusual items.
Price to conservative sum-of-the-parts value Share price divided by the low or midpoint of your SOTP range Shows whether the market price leaves a margin of safety under explicit assumptions.
Book-value growth Change in per-share book value over several years Provides context for one year’s ratio and reveals the effect of markets, earnings, currencies and repurchases.

A low price-to-book ratio is not automatically cheap: it can reflect weak future earnings, unrecognized liabilities or a falling value of the underlying assets. A high ratio is not automatically expensive if operating businesses are carried well below their economic value and can compound cash flows at attractive returns.

Use repurchases as evidence, not as a valuation shortcut

Berkshire’s 2025 filing says repurchases may occur when the chief executive officer, after consulting the chairman, believes the market price is below conservatively determined intrinsic value. The policy also states that repurchases cannot reduce consolidated cash, cash equivalents and Treasury bills below $30 billion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This policy provides a signal about management’s willingness to buy when it sees a discount, but it does not tell you the current intrinsic value. Check the number of shares repurchased, the prices paid, the effect on per-share ownership and the liquidity remaining after each transaction. A repurchase made above intrinsic value can destroy value even if it increases reported per-share figures.

Stress-test the assumptions that can change your range

Interest rates

Higher rates can reduce the present value of long-lived operating cash flows, change the market value of fixed-income investments and alter discount rates for long-duration insurance contracts. They can also increase investment income on newly reinvested float. Model both the valuation and earnings effects rather than assuming rates have only one direction of impact.

Investment-market declines

A fall in marketable securities can reduce reported book value and GAAP earnings through unrealized losses even when subsidiaries continue to earn money. Test how much of your thesis depends on securities prices recovering and how much rests on operating cash generation.

Catastrophe and reserve losses

Use a severe but plausible underwriting-loss case. Examine whether Berkshire’s capital and liquidity remain adequate after a major event, and whether a sequence of catastrophes would make float more expensive or cause it to contract.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operating-company deterioration

Reduce normalized margins or volumes for cyclical segments, increase maintenance capital requirements and test regulatory or fuel-cost pressures at transportation and energy businesses. A valuation range that survives these changes is more informative than one based only on the latest strong year.

Capital allocation and succession

Read disclosures about acquisition discipline, cash retention, repurchases and leadership succession. The quality of future capital allocation matters because Berkshire retains substantial earnings and owns businesses with different reinvestment opportunities. Avoid assigning value to an unannounced transaction or assuming that historical allocation skill will continue without examining the company’s stated process and governance.

A repeatable annual-report workflow

  1. Collect the filings: download the latest annual report and the most recent quarterly report, then note the reporting dates.
  2. Reconcile equity: record shareholders’ equity attributable to Berkshire shareholders, noncontrolling interests and the equivalent share count.
  3. Calculate both share classes: divide equity by equivalent Class A shares, then divide the Class A result by 1,500 for a Class B economic equivalent.
  4. Build the trend: calculate several years of per-share book-value growth and annotate market, currency, insurance and repurchase effects.
  5. Map the balance sheet: separate cash and Treasury bills, marketable securities, deferred taxes, debt, insurance liabilities and other obligations.
  6. Normalize earnings: reconcile GAAP net earnings with segment operating earnings and identify recurring, cyclical, mark-to-market, catastrophe and one-time items.
  7. Value the parts: estimate investment value after taxes and apply conservative ranges to normalized operating cash flows.
  8. Test insurance economics: review float growth, underwriting results, reserve development, catastrophe exposure and the implied cost of float.
  9. Compare with the market: obtain a current BRK.A or BRK.B quote and calculate price-to-book, normalized earnings multiples and the discount or premium to your SOTP range.
  10. Write down invalidation conditions: specify what would change your conclusion, such as sustained underwriting losses, shrinking float, weaker operating cash flow, excessive repurchases or a materially higher required return.

Putting the valuation into a decision

Use the annual report to produce a range, not a single magic number. The low case should use conservative investment values, normalized rather than peak earnings, realistic taxes and obligations, and an allowance for insurance and catastrophe risk. The high case can recognize durable competitive advantages and successful reinvestment, but it should still be tied to observable cash flows.

Then compare the current price with that range and require a margin of safety large enough to absorb errors in discount rates, reserves, marketable-security prices and operating forecasts. Book value tells you what accounting equity was reported; the combination of normalized earnings, low-cost float, liquid assets and subsidiary economics explains what that equity may be worth. Refresh the calculation after each annual and quarterly report instead of treating the 2025 snapshot as a permanent valuation.
