ASML’s investment case combines unusually strong order visibility with unusually concentrated customers and demanding execution requirements. The latest disclosed figures show a €38.8 billion backlog at the end of 2025, third-quarter 2026 sales of €11.7 billion, a 57.5% gross margin and 2026 sales guidance of €44–€45 billion. At the same time, one customer generated 23.9% of 2025 sales and the two largest generated 38.0%. Those facts support a structured assessment—not an automatic buy decision.
Evaluate the stock in five passes: test how much of the backlog can become revenue and when, determine whether margins are repeatable, stress-test customer concentration, check whether manufacturing capacity can meet demand, and then value the resulting cash flows using an up-to-date share price and consensus forecast. The cited company disclosures do not provide a current intrinsic value or buy threshold, so valuation inputs must be refreshed when you make the decision.

The numbers that frame the decision
| Measure | Latest disclosed figure | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Backlog | €38.8 billion at year-end 2025 (ASML, 2026) | Starting point for shipment visibility; not the same as current-year revenue. |
| Q3 2026 sales | €11.7 billion | Shows the company’s current quarterly run rate, but one quarter should not be annualized blindly. |
| Q3 2026 gross margin | 57.5% | Evidence of current mix and execution, not proof that every future quarter will match it. |
| Q4 2026 gross-margin guidance | Approximately 57% | Management’s near-term expectation. |
| FY2026 guidance | €44–€45 billion sales; approximately 56% gross margin | Base reference for a valuation model. |
| FY2025 gross margin | 52.8% | Useful comparison for judging recent expansion and normal volatility. |
| Largest customer | €7,796.7 million, or 23.9% of 2025 sales | Quantifies single-customer exposure. |
| Two largest customers | 38.0% of 2025 sales | Measures dependence on the largest spending cluster. |
Dividing the €38.8 billion backlog by the €44–€45 billion 2026 sales guide gives roughly 0.86–0.88 years of guided sales coverage. That is only a rough scale comparison: backlog can ship across several years, includes different products and services, and may be affected by timing, cancellations or deferrals.
How to judge backlog quality and conversion
Backlog is an order-book measure, not recognized revenue. A strong number is valuable only if systems can be manufactured, accepted by customers and paid for on schedule. Start by separating visibility from certainty.
#1 Best Overall
1. Map the shipment window
Ask what portion is scheduled for the next four quarters, what portion is dated for later years and how much can move between periods. In the October 14, 2026 third-quarter release, management said customers were already discussing orders for 2029 and 2030. Management also said currently planned supply for 2027 and 2028 would not fully meet indicated demand. These comments demonstrate long-range demand visibility, not guaranteed revenue in those years.
2. Examine product and service mix
Request or track the split among extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) systems, deep-ultraviolet (DUV) systems and installed-base services. Mix matters because selling prices, gross margins, delivery cycles and recurring service revenue differ by category. A backlog weighted toward systems that can ship soon has a different conversion profile from one weighted toward future-generation tools or upgrades. If a disclosure does not provide a split, record it as “not stated” rather than assuming EUV dominates.
3. Check commercial quality
- Look for customer deposits, milestone payments and other evidence that orders are funded.
- Compare new bookings with cancellations, rescheduling and deferrals.
- Track whether customers are accepting systems on time; acceptance generally determines when revenue is recognized.
- Compare backlog growth with factory output and field-installation capacity. Backlog that rises only because deliveries are delayed is less valuable than backlog converting steadily.
4. Calculate conversion, not just coverage
For each reporting period, calculate revenue recognized from the opening backlog, add bookings, subtract cancellations and compare with the closing balance. A simple approximation is: backlog conversion rate = revenue recognized from prior-period backlog ÷ prior-period backlog. The company may not disclose every component, so use the closest available data and label estimates clearly. Rising conversion with stable cancellations is healthier than a rising backlog accompanied by persistent slippage.

5. Stress timing and capacity
Model a case in which a major program ships two quarters late, a customer defers a fab project or a supplier constraint limits system output. The resulting revenue shift can affect factory utilization, operating expenses and free-cash-flow timing even if the order is eventually delivered.
Christophe Fouquet, ASML’s president and chief executive officer, said in the October 14, 2026 release: “With such strong visibility and an order book momentum that continues to increase quarter on quarter this year, we now expect that our supply as currently planned for both 2027 and 2028 will not fully meet the demand of our customers.” Treat that statement as evidence of demand exceeding currently planned supply, while recognizing that adding capacity introduces capital, supplier and ramp-up risk.
Are ASML’s margins durable?
Gross margin expanded from 52.8% for FY2025 to 57.5% in Q3 2026. Management guided approximately 57% for Q4 and approximately 56% for the full year 2026. The full-year guide is lower than the single-quarter result, which illustrates why a peak quarter should not be extrapolated mechanically.
Rank #3
| Period | Gross margin | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| FY2025 | 52.8% | Prior-year baseline. |
| Q3 2026 | 57.5% | Recent realized mix and execution. |
| Q4 2026 guidance | Approximately 57% | Near-term expected level. |
| FY2026 guidance | Approximately 56% | Blended full-year expectation. |
Drivers that can support margins
- EUV mix: A larger proportion of high-value EUV systems can lift the blended margin, although product mix varies by quarter.
- Installed-base upgrades and services: Upgrades and service contracts can add profitable revenue and smooth system-delivery cycles.
- Productivity improvements: Better throughput, yield and manufacturing processes can reduce unit cost.
- Factory utilization: High utilization spreads fixed costs over more systems; underutilization works in the opposite direction.
Reasons margins can fall
- Component-price inflation, shortages or expedited freight can raise cost of sales.
- A quarter with more lower-margin products or early-ramp systems can dilute the mix.
- New factories, tooling and High-NA EUV ramp costs can arrive before revenue reaches a mature level.
- Customer acceptance delays can leave completed systems in inventory and reduce utilization.
Build at least three margin cases rather than assuming 56% or 57.5% indefinitely. Tie each case to an explicit mix, utilization and cost assumption, then test the effect on operating profit and free cash flow. Also monitor operating expenses: a higher gross margin does not guarantee higher earnings if research, development or expansion spending rises faster than revenue.
How customer concentration changes the risk profile
ASML’s 2025 Form 20-F reports €7,796.7 million, equal to 23.9% of 2025 sales, from its largest customer. The two largest customers represented 38.0% of sales. The filing states: “We sell our lithography systems to a relatively small number of customers, making our business vulnerable to customer concentration risk.” These are historical percentages; rankings and shares can change with order timing and customer spending.
| Stress test | Question to answer | What to model |
|---|---|---|
| Fab-build delay | What if the largest customer postpones a facility? | Move a portion of that customer’s system orders out by two to four quarters; reduce utilization and free cash flow in the delay period. |
| Export-control change | What products or destinations could be restricted? | Remove affected shipments, add a probability-weighted delay and assess service-revenue impact. |
| Spending pause | What if both top customers cut capital expenditure? | Apply a temporary revenue decline to the 38.0% combined exposure and test margin deleverage. |
| Customer diversification | Can other customers absorb released capacity? | Estimate replacement bookings and the time required to qualify, schedule and install systems. |
Concentration is not automatically negative: large customers can have the balance sheet and technical capability to place repeat orders. The issue is the size and timing of the downside if one pauses. Compare concentration over several years, by geography and by product family, and watch whether backlog growth is broad-based or depends on one account.

Capacity and execution: the constraint behind the opportunity
Management’s view that planned 2027–2028 supply will not satisfy indicated demand creates both upside and risk. Additional capacity could support more sales, but expansion depends on specialist suppliers, factory tooling, workforce, installation teams and customer-site readiness.
Track these operating signals
- Changes to delivery timing and the number of systems accepted by customers each quarter.
- Supplier bottlenecks, component lead times and the cost of securing scarce parts.
- Capital expenditure and the schedule for added 2028 capacity.
- High-NA EUV development and ramp milestones, including productivity and yield indicators when disclosed.
- Field-upgrade capacity and service staffing, which can limit revenue even when systems are available.
Capacity announcements should therefore be added to the model as staged investments with ramp risk, not as an instant increase in revenue. A useful check is whether incremental capacity produces sales growth without a sustained decline in gross margin or free-cash-flow conversion.

Build bear, base and bull cases
| Input | Bear case | Base case | Bull case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | Delayed conversions, customer pause or export restriction | €44–€45 billion 2026 guide followed by modeled growth | Faster backlog conversion and capacity additions |
| Gross margin | Below the 56% guide because of mix, costs or ramp expense | Approximately 56% in FY2026, then a normalized level | At or above recent levels as EUV and services mix improves |
| Operating expenses | Expansion spending rises ahead of revenue | Grow in line with strategic investment | Operating leverage as sales outpace expense growth |
| Tax and share count | Higher effective tax or dilution | Use current disclosed rates and diluted shares | Stable tax and share count, subject to actual buybacks or issuance |
| Free cash flow | Working-capital build and capital spending delay conversion | Converts a reasonable share of operating profit after investment | Strong conversion as deposits and utilization improve |
For each case, forecast revenue, gross profit, operating expenses, operating income, tax, capital expenditure, working-capital changes and diluted shares. Then calculate earnings per share and free cash flow per share. Compare the resulting forward P/E and EV/EBITDA with ASML’s own history and relevant semiconductor-equipment peers. Use the same fiscal-year definitions and normalized earnings in every comparison.
Use valuation as a range, not a trigger
Backlog visibility can justify a premium multiple, but concentration and execution risk argue for a margin of safety. Test how much the implied value changes when you lower gross margin by one or two percentage points, delay a year of growth or reduce free-cash-flow conversion. If a small change makes the valuation unattractive, the thesis depends on optimistic assumptions. If the bear case still offers an acceptable return at the updated price, the risk-reward is more resilient.
A repeatable ASML stock checklist
- Record the latest share price, market capitalization, net cash or debt, diluted shares and consensus estimates.
- Reconcile the €38.8 billion year-end 2025 backlog with current bookings, cancellations and recognized revenue.
- Estimate how much backlog can ship in the next 12 months and identify orders scheduled for 2027–2030.
- Separate EUV, DUV and service exposure where disclosed; mark unavailable detail as not stated.
- Compare the 57.5% Q3 2026 margin, approximately 57% Q4 guide and approximately 56% FY2026 guide with the 52.8% FY2025 baseline.
- Run the largest-customer and top-two-customer stress tests using the 23.9% and 38.0% sales exposures.
- Check whether capacity, suppliers, High-NA EUV and field service can support the shipment schedule without damaging margins.
- Value bear, base and bull cash flows, then compare the implied multiples with history and peers using current data.
- Write down the assumptions that would invalidate the thesis, such as sustained cancellations, a prolonged customer capex pause or failure to ramp capacity.
What the evidence supports—and what it does not
The evidence supports strong near- and long-range demand visibility, recent margin performance above FY2025 and a clear capacity shortfall against customer indications for 2027–2028. It does not establish that every backlog euro will convert on schedule, that 57% gross margins are permanent, or that the current share price is attractive. A sound decision links each positive observation to a measurable risk, updates market inputs, and sizes the investment so a concentrated-customer shock is survivable.
