Apple’s fiscal 2025 results show a useful starting point: net sales rose 6% to $416.161 billion, Services grew 14% to $109.158 billion, and total gross margin increased to 46.9% from 46.2%.
That operating performance does not, by itself, prove that the shares are cheap or expensive. A valuation judgment also requires the share price and date, diluted earnings per share period, share count, cash, debt and a clearly defined peer comparison. Without those current market inputs, no responsible article can state a live Apple P/E or declare the stock overvalued.

What a complete Apple stock evaluation should answer
A sound analysis connects business performance to the price investors are paying. It should answer six questions in order:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- How quickly is total revenue growing, and is growth broad or dependent on one category?
- Is the revenue mix becoming more profitable, or is growth coming from lower-margin products?
- Are gross, operating and net margins stable, improving or under pressure?
- Do accounting profits translate into operating cash flow and free cash flow?
- Is the balance sheet strong enough to reduce financial risk?
- What expectations are embedded in the current P/E, forward P/E, EV/EBITDA and price-to-free-cash-flow ratios?
Use GAAP figures from the same fiscal period for the operating analysis. Keep market-based ratios tied to a specific quote date and currency. Mixing a current share price with an old earnings period can make a multiple look precise while measuring the wrong economics.

1. Start with revenue growth and its quality
Calculate total revenue growth
The basic calculation is:
Revenue growth = (current-period revenue − prior-period revenue) ÷ prior-period revenue
Apple reported fiscal 2025 total net sales of $416.161 billion, compared with $391.035 billion in fiscal 2024. That is a 6% year-over-year increase. The comparison is for Apple’s fiscal years, not calendar years, so label the period correctly in any spreadsheet or investment memo.
| Apple category | FY2025 net sales | Year-over-year change | What to examine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total net sales | $416.161 billion | Up 6% | Whether growth is accelerating, slowing or tracking the company’s own three-to-five-year history |
| iPhone | $209.586 billion | Up 4% | Unit, price, upgrade and geographic trends; the category remains the largest contributor to sales |
| Mac | $33.708 billion | Up 12% | Whether a strong year reflects a sustainable product cycle or a difficult prior-year comparison |
| iPad | $28.023 billion | Up 5% | Product refresh timing, pricing and demand breadth |
| Wearables, Home and Accessories | $35.686 billion | Down 4% | Whether weakness is temporary or signals pressure in a strategically important ecosystem category |
| Services | $109.158 billion | Up 14% | Growth durability, regulation, customer engagement and the contribution of higher-margin revenue |
The category figures sum to total net sales after rounding. Services growth was attributed primarily to higher advertising, App Store and cloud-services sales. That explanation matters because recurring or usage-linked services can behave differently from a hardware launch cycle, while each service line also has its own regulatory, competitive and cost risks.

Measure concentration, breadth and mix
Apple’s fiscal 2025 growth was not uniform. Services grew more than three times as fast as total revenue, Mac grew 12%, iPhone grew 4%, iPad grew 5%, and Wearables, Home and Accessories declined 4%. A headline 6% growth rate therefore needs a second question: how much of the increase came from each category, and can the faster-growing categories keep expanding?
Calculate each category’s share of total revenue and its change from the prior year. A rising Services share can lift companywide profitability because Services gross margin was substantially higher than Products gross margin in fiscal 2025. It can also increase exposure to platform regulation, advertising cycles, App Store economics and cloud infrastructure costs. Treat mix as a potential driver, not an automatic quality score.
Use at least a three-year trend
One year can be distorted by product launches, foreign-exchange movements, supply constraints or an easy comparison. Build a table with at least fiscal 2023, 2024 and 2025 total sales, category sales, growth rates and category shares. The figures cited here establish fiscal 2024 and 2025 totals; fiscal 2023 values are not stated in the cited figures and should be transcribed from Apple’s 2025 Form 10-K before drawing a three-year trend conclusion.
| Fiscal year | Total net sales | Total growth | Services sales | Services growth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FY2023 | Not stated in the cited figures | Not stated in the cited figures | Not stated in the cited figures | Not stated in the cited figures |
| FY2024 | $391.035 billion | Base year for the FY2025 comparison | Not stated in the cited figures | Not stated in the cited figures |
| FY2025 | $416.161 billion | 6% | $109.158 billion | 14% |
2. Analyze gross-margin quality, not just sales growth
Use the three core margin formulas
Margins show how much of each sales dollar remains after successive costs:

- Gross margin = (revenue − cost of sales) ÷ revenue.
- Operating margin = operating income ÷ revenue.
- Net margin = net income ÷ revenue.
Express each result as a percentage and use the same fiscal period for revenue, costs and income. A margin can rise because of better pricing, a more profitable mix, lower component costs or currency effects; it can also rise because spending was deferred. Read the income statement and footnotes instead of treating the ratio as a diagnosis by itself.
Apple’s fiscal 2025 gross-margin snapshot
Apple reported $195.201 billion of total gross margin in fiscal 2025, equal to a 46.9% total gross-margin percentage, compared with 46.2% in fiscal 2024. The improvement is meaningful, but the product and services split explains why it occurred.
| Measure | FY2025 result | FY2024 comparison | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total gross margin | $195.201 billion | 46.9% versus 46.2% | Companywide profitability improved year over year |
| Products gross-margin percentage | 36.8% | Prior-year percentage not stated in the cited figures | Lower-margin hardware economics; inspect product mix, pricing, components and tariffs |
| Services gross-margin percentage | 75.4% | Prior-year percentage not stated in the cited figures | High-margin contributor; test whether growth and cost structure are durable |
Apple said Products margin percentage decreased mainly because of product mix and tariff costs, partly offset by other favorable costs. Services margin percentage increased mainly because of a different services mix, partly offset by higher costs. Those explanations should be carried into an investment model: a mix-driven improvement can reverse if customers shift toward lower-margin offerings, while tariff and input-cost pressure can affect future product margins.
“The Company’s future gross margins can be impacted by a variety of factors, as discussed in Part I, Item 1A of this Form 10-K under the heading ‘Risk Factors.’ As a result, the Company believes, in general, gross margins will be subject to volatility and downward pressure.”

Separate mix, price and cost effects
For each year, write a short bridge explaining the change in total gross margin:
- Identify the revenue contribution from Products and Services.
- Compare each segment’s margin percentage with the prior year.
- Record pricing, product mix, component costs, freight, tariffs, foreign exchange and other disclosed cost factors.
- Test whether the companywide change is mostly a mix effect or an improvement within a category.
- Model a downside case in which Services growth slows or product costs rise.
This avoids a common error: assuming that a larger Services business automatically guarantees higher future margins. The mix helps, but the company still faces changes in service costs, regulation, customer behavior and competitive pricing.
3. Move from gross margin to operating margin, net margin and EPS
Check whether expenses scale
Operating margin shows whether Apple converts gross profit into operating income after research and development, selling, general and administrative costs. In fiscal 2025 Apple reported:

| Operating expense | FY2025 amount | Share of sales | Question for the model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Research and development | $34.550 billion | 8% | Is investment supporting future products and services without permanently diluting operating leverage? |
| Selling, general and administrative | $27.601 billion | 7% | Are distribution, support and corporate costs growing slower than revenue? |

Calculate operating margin for at least three fiscal years using operating income from each year’s GAAP income statement. The operating-income and operating-margin figures are not stated in the cited figures, so do not infer them from gross margin or expense percentages. A complete worksheet should show revenue, gross profit, operating income, operating margin, net income and net margin side by side.
Recommended Free Tools
Verify net income and diluted EPS
Net margin captures interest, other income or expense and taxes after operating costs. Then compare diluted earnings per share with net income. The relationship is:
Diluted EPS = net income available to common shareholders ÷ weighted-average diluted shares
EPS can grow faster than net income when the share count falls through repurchases. That can benefit continuing shareholders, but it does not mean the underlying business grew at the same rate. Record diluted shares for every fiscal year and explain any material change. Use GAAP diluted EPS consistently when calculating a trailing P/E.
Connect profits to cash
Accounting earnings should be checked against operating cash flow and free cash flow. Use:
- Operating cash flow: cash generated by operations in the cash-flow statement.
- Free cash flow: operating cash flow minus capital expenditures, with the definition stated explicitly.
- Cash conversion: operating cash flow divided by net income, tracked over several years.
The cited figures do not provide Apple’s fiscal 2025 operating cash flow, capital expenditures, free cash flow, cash balance or debt balance. Retrieve those items from the same Form 10-K before calculating price-to-free-cash-flow or enterprise-value multiples. Watch for working-capital timing, unusual tax payments and acquisition or investment cash flows that can make one year atypical.
4. Build valuation ratios with a dated market snapshot
P/E and earnings yield
The trailing price-to-earnings ratio is:
Trailing P/E = share price on the quote date ÷ diluted EPS for the specified trailing fiscal period

The inverse is earnings yield:
Earnings yield = diluted EPS ÷ share price
A forward P/E replaces historical EPS with an explicitly identified estimate period. State whether the estimate is the next four quarters, the next fiscal year or another convention. Never mix a current price with an unlabeled estimate.
A high P/E can be reasonable when investors have credible evidence of durable revenue growth, margin stability and cash generation. A low P/E can signal slower growth, higher risk, a temporary earnings peak or a deteriorating business. The ratio alone cannot distinguish those cases.

Enterprise value accounts for capital structure:
Enterprise value = equity market value + total debt − cash and cash equivalents
EV/EBITDA = enterprise value ÷ EBITDA
Define EBITDA consistently and disclose whether it is reported or calculated. For price-to-free-cash-flow:
Price-to-free-cash-flow = equity market value ÷ free cash flow
Use the same date and period for the share price, market capitalization, cash, debt and cash-flow measure. A company with substantial net cash can look more expensive on P/E than on EV/EBITDA because enterprise value subtracts excess cash. That difference is informative only when the balance-sheet inputs are current.
Record the inputs before calculating
At the top of the valuation worksheet, record:
- Quote date and time zone.
- Share price and currency.
- Shares outstanding used for market capitalization.
- Diluted EPS period and GAAP basis.
- Forward-estimate source, period and revision date, if using forward P/E.
- Total debt, cash and cash equivalents, and the balance-sheet date.
- Operating cash flow, capital expenditures and the free-cash-flow definition.
- Whether each multiple is trailing or forward.
The cited material contains no live share price, timestamped multiple table or current peer valuation. Therefore, a current Apple P/E, EV/EBITDA or price-to-free-cash-flow figure remains not stated until those market-data inputs are refreshed immediately before publication or investment use.

5. Compare Apple with its own history and relevant peers
Use Apple’s historical range
Collect monthly or quarterly trailing and forward P/E, EV/EBITDA and price-to-free-cash-flow observations for a consistent period, such as five to ten years. Mark unusual observations caused by pandemic demand, recessionary earnings, major product cycles or accounting changes. Compare today’s multiple with the median, lower quartile and upper quartile rather than relying on a single historical average.
Then connect the multiple to operating conditions. A premium to history is easier to defend when revenue growth, Services mix, gross margin and free-cash-flow growth are also above historical norms. A premium without stronger fundamentals implies that more optimism is already embedded in the price.
Choose peers by economics, not popularity
A useful peer set should share several characteristics with Apple: large-cap scale, a global consumer or technology platform, meaningful hardware and/or recurring services, comparable accounting treatment and a similar fiscal period. Exclude companies whose business mix or leverage makes the ratio misleading, or show them separately.
| Comparison axis | Apple calculation | Peer and historical comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue growth | FY2025 total growth of 6%; Services growth of 14% | Compare three-to-five-year compound growth and the latest year |
| Mix | Category sales, growth and share of total revenue | Compare recurring or platform revenue share and growth quality |
| Gross margin | 46.9% total; 36.8% Products; 75.4% Services | Use the same GAAP definition and fiscal period |
| Operating margin | Calculate from reported operating income | Compare operating leverage and R&D intensity |
| Net margin and EPS | Use reported net income, diluted EPS and diluted shares | Separate business growth from buyback-driven EPS growth |
| Cash and leverage | Use current cash, debt, operating cash flow and free cash flow | Compare net debt or net cash and cash conversion |
| Valuation | Calculate dated P/E, forward P/E, EV/EBITDA and price-to-free-cash-flow | Compare medians and ranges, not isolated figures |
Do not compare ratios built from different dates, currencies, fiscal periods or adjusted-earnings definitions. If a peer value is unavailable, label it not stated rather than filling the cell with an estimate.
6. Turn the numbers into a decision
A repeatable worksheet
- Set the date. Enter the market quote date, currency and share price.
- Load three or more fiscal years. Enter revenue by category, gross profit, operating income, net income, diluted EPS, diluted shares, operating cash flow and capital expenditures.
- Calculate growth. Compute total and category growth, category shares and three-year compound growth.
- Calculate margins. Compute gross, operating and net margins, then annotate mix, price, cost, R&D, SG&A and tax effects.
- Check cash conversion. Compare operating cash flow and free cash flow with net income and test for unusual working-capital items.
- Calculate valuation. Use the dated price with trailing EPS, forward estimates, EBITDA and free cash flow. Add cash and debt for enterprise value.
- Benchmark. Compare Apple with its historical valuation range and a peer-group median using identical definitions.
- Stress-test. Model slower Services growth, lower product margin, higher tariffs, weaker foreign exchange or a higher discount rate.
- Write the conclusion conditionally. State which assumptions justify the multiple and what would invalidate them.
Interpretation matrix
| Operating result | Valuation result | Possible reading |
|---|---|---|
| Growth and margins improving | Multiple below Apple’s normal range | Potentially attractive, subject to balance-sheet and forecast risks |
| Growth and margins improving | Multiple well above history and peers | Quality may justify some premium, but expectations and downside sensitivity are high |
| Growth slowing or concentrated | Multiple unchanged or rising | Price may be assuming a recovery that the operating data do not yet show |
| Margins falling and cash conversion weakening | Low P/E | Low valuation may reflect deteriorating economics rather than a bargain |
| Stable operations and strong cash generation | EV and equity multiples diverge | Inspect net cash, debt and the exact numerator and denominator before choosing a conclusion |
7. Common errors and how to avoid them
- Using a live-looking multiple without a timestamp. Fix it by displaying the quote date, price, currency and earnings period beside every ratio.
- Calling 6% revenue growth “broad-based.” Fix it by showing category growth and the decline in Wearables, Home and Accessories.
- Treating Services growth as risk-free recurring revenue. Fix it by examining advertising, App Store and cloud-services drivers, costs and regulatory exposure.
- Assuming higher gross margin means every product became more profitable. Fix it by separating the 36.8% Products margin from the 75.4% Services margin and identifying mix effects.
- Ignoring tariffs and input costs. Fix it by carrying Apple’s disclosed tariff and cost explanations into downside scenarios.
- Using EPS without diluted shares. Fix it by separating net-income growth from repurchase-driven per-share growth.
- Comparing adjusted peer metrics with Apple GAAP metrics. Fix it by standardizing definitions or presenting GAAP and adjusted sets separately.
- Using P/E when earnings are temporarily inflated. Fix it by checking free cash flow, margins and normalized earnings assumptions.
- Forgetting the balance sheet in EV calculations. Fix it by refreshing cash and debt from the latest filing rather than reusing an old number.
8. When to refresh the analysis
Refresh the worksheet after each annual Form 10-K, quarterly earnings release, material product-cycle update or major market-price move. At minimum, update revenue, category mix, gross-margin explanations, operating expenses, diluted shares, cash, debt and cash flow each quarter. Recalculate valuation ratios whenever the quote changes materially, and retain the prior snapshot so you can see whether the thesis changed because the business changed or because the price moved.
Apple’s Investor Relations materials provide the 2025 Form 10-K, quarterly earnings reports, financial statements and SEC filings. Use the latest filing for operating data and a current, timestamped market-data source for the quote. Keep the fiscal period, currency and ratio convention visible in the published analysis.
Bottom line
Apple’s fiscal 2025 operating picture is mixed but informative: total sales grew 6% to $416.161 billion, Services grew 14% to $109.158 billion, total gross margin improved to 46.9%, and Services carried a 75.4% gross-margin percentage versus 36.8% for Products. The next decision is not whether those numbers look good in isolation. It is whether future growth, mix and cash generation are strong enough to justify the multiple shown by a dated share price. Until that price and the matching earnings, cash and debt inputs are recorded, “overvalued” is an unsupported conclusion rather than an analysis.
