Evaluate an AI ETF by checking five things in order: the fund’s governing documents, its definition of artificial-intelligence exposure, the actual holdings and their weights, all-in costs, and the way the fund fits with your existing portfolio. Do not assume an ETF is diversified because it owns many securities. A narrowly focused fund can spread assets across dozens of names while remaining dominated by the same semiconductor, cloud, platform, country, or other correlated risks.
The most reliable process starts with the latest prospectus, shareholder report, and holdings file. Then calculate top-five and top-10 weights, inspect sector and country exposure, compare the expense ratio with trading costs, and measure overlap with funds and individual stocks you already own. The result should tell you whether an AI ETF adds a distinct exposure or simply increases an existing technology concentration.

What documents should you read before buying an AI ETF?
Read the latest prospectus, summary prospectus, shareholder report, and current holdings file before relying on a ticker description or marketing label. Investor.gov says investors should review the prospectus and shareholder report before investing; those documents are available through the fund website or the SEC’s EDGAR system.
| Document | What to extract | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Prospectus | Investment objective, principal strategies, AI definition, 80% policy, permitted countries and market capitalizations, risks, fee table, turnover and securities-lending disclosures | It is the legal description of what the fund may do, not just what it holds today. |
| Summary prospectus | Plain-language objective, principal risks, annual operating expenses, portfolio-management and purchase information | It is a faster first pass, but the full prospectus can contain important details that the summary omits. |
| Shareholder report | Holdings on the reporting date, expense ratio for the stated period, performance, turnover and financial statements | It shows how the fund was actually implemented during a defined period. |
| Current holdings file | Security names, weights, share counts, cash and the file’s as-of date | It lets you measure present concentration and overlap instead of relying on an older report. |
Record the date of every figure. A portfolio can change between a shareholder report and a current holdings file, and a reported expense ratio can cover a particular period rather than the next full year. Keep a copy of the documents used so that two ETF comparisons are based on the same dates and definitions.

What should you verify in the fund’s identity?
- Whether the strategy is passive, tracking an index, or active, with a manager selecting securities.
- The exact index name, if there is one, and how often it reconstitutes and rebalances.
- The minimum artificial-intelligence revenue or exposure test, if any.
- Whether an 80% investment policy applies and what assets count toward it.
- Eligible countries, exchanges, market-cap ranges, security types and cash limits.
- Whether the fund can use derivatives, depositary receipts, affiliated funds or securities lending.
How does an AI ETF define “artificial intelligence”?
“AI ETF” is not a standardized regulatory category. One fund may require measurable AI revenue, while another may include companies that supply chips, data-center equipment, software, automation, or other parts of an AI value chain. Compare the methodology, not the name.
Active methodology: a value-chain definition
The January 27, 2026 prospectus for the Pictet AI & Automation ETF says the fund normally invests at least 80% of net assets in global AI and automation companies. It evaluates links to the AI value chain using measures that include sales, EBITDA, enterprise value and capital expenditure, among other measures. This approach can reach companies whose AI connection is indirect or comes from infrastructure investment rather than a separately reported AI product.

The Themes China Generative Artificial Intelligence ETF tracks a proprietary BITA index. Its prospectus states that the index contained 24 companies as of December 31, 2025, and used a revenue-based Thematic Exposure Score derived from company filings, earnings materials and other public information. A revenue score creates a different portfolio from an approach that screens for patents, research activity, capital spending or broad value-chain participation.
| Feature | Pictet AI & Automation ETF | Themes China Generative Artificial Intelligence ETF |
|---|---|---|
| Structure described in the prospectus | Active fund | Passive fund tracking a proprietary BITA index |
| Exposure rule | Normally at least 80% of net assets in global AI and automation companies | Revenue-based Thematic Exposure Score |
| How companies can qualify | AI value-chain links measured using sales, EBITDA, enterprise value, capex and other measures | Evidence from company filings, earnings materials and other public information |
| Published breadth | Not stated in the cited prospectus information | 24 index companies as of December 31, 2025 |
| Main comparison question | How consistently the manager applies its value-chain judgment | How the scoring model and index rules translate revenue exposure into weights |
Also check whether the fund’s 80% policy applies to net assets, what happens to the remaining assets, and whether the policy permits temporary deviations. An 80% test does not mean 80% of the portfolio is pure-play AI; it may include companies admitted under the fund’s stated value-chain rules.
How do you analyze an AI ETF’s actual holdings?
Download the most recent holdings file and calculate concentration from the weights, not from the number of line items. Start with the largest position, top-five total and top-10 total, then examine sectors, countries, market-cap bands and business drivers.
Use the top holdings as a concentration test
The First Trust Bloomberg Artificial Intelligence ETF shareholder report for the six-month period ending March 31, 2026 listed 50 holdings and reported a 0.65% expense ratio for that period. Its 10 largest positions were:

| Holding | Weight as of March 31, 2026 |
|---|---|
| NVIDIA | 8.3% |
| Amazon | 8.2% |
| Alphabet A | 8.2% |
| Broadcom | 8.0% |
| Microsoft | 6.8% |
| ASML | 5.1% |
| Taiwan Semiconductor | 5.1% |
| Micron | 4.6% |
| AMD | 4.1% |
| Meta A | 3.9% |
| Calculated top-10 total | 62.3% |
The 62.3% figure is calculated by adding the ten published component weights; it is not a percentage quoted by the shareholder report. The example shows why “50 holdings” does not automatically mean broad diversification: nearly two-thirds of the portfolio was in the 10 largest positions on that date.
Measure the single-name and top-five risks
Write down the largest position and add the five largest weights. A high single-name weight makes one company’s earnings, valuation, regulation and operational problems unusually important. A high top-five weight means a few companies can determine most of the fund’s short-term behavior even when the remaining holdings are numerous.
Use the same as-of date when comparing funds. If one ETF’s holdings are from March 31 and another’s are from a later daily file, differences may reflect market moves rather than methodology. Label any calculation as your calculation and preserve the underlying weights.
Look beyond company names
- Sector: Separate semiconductors, cloud and platform companies, software, industrial automation, data providers and other groups. Companies in different sectors can still depend on the same AI capital-spending cycle.
- Country: Identify the percentage in each country and whether the fund’s rules permit a small set of markets to dominate. Currency, export controls, local regulation and political risk can affect results.
- Market capitalization: Check whether the fund is mostly mega-cap, blends smaller companies, or uses a stated market-cap range. A broad name count can conceal a mega-cap portfolio.
- Business driver: Ask what would make several holdings rise or fall together: chip demand, data-center construction, cloud spending, advertising, enterprise software budgets or a common interest-rate sensitivity.
Is an AI ETF really diversified?
Not necessarily. Investor.gov warns that narrowly focused funds may not diversify an investor’s portfolio and recommends comparing top holdings across funds. The SEC’s Investor.gov prospectus guidance states: “Concentration risk. The fund may concentrate its investments in a particular industry, sector or geographical area, which can result in a less diversified portfolio that may be subject to greater volatility in performance than a fund that does not concentrate its investments.”
Check overlap with everything you already own
Create a combined list of your individual stocks, broad-market funds, technology funds and the AI ETF. Match companies by name, including different share classes where relevant, and add the indirect exposure from each position. If a broad fund already owns the largest technology companies, buying an AI ETF may increase their combined portfolio weights rather than add a new source of return.
At minimum, compare the AI ETF’s top 10 with the top holdings of your other funds. A fund can look different by ticker while holding many of the same mega-cap semiconductor, cloud or platform companies. Also compare country and sector totals; overlap is not limited to identical company names.

Account for correlation, not just ownership
Two companies can be different legal entities but respond to the same event. Suppliers, cloud providers, chip designers and large software platforms may all be affected by a change in data-center spending or export restrictions. Group holdings by shared economic driver and treat that group as a concentration even when no single company dominates.
How much do AI ETF fees cost?
The expense ratio is important, but it is only one part of the investor’s cost. Annual operating expenses are deducted from fund assets, reducing the return delivered to shareholders. The SEC’s July 23, 2025 bulletin explains that a higher-cost fund must perform better than a lower-cost fund to produce the same investor return and illustrates a 0.25% annual fee on a hypothetical $100,000 investment growing at 4% annually for 20 years.
Use a current benchmark, but do not treat it as a target
| ETF category or example | Expense ratio | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Index equity ETFs | 0.14% | Investment Company Institute, 2025; asset-weighted average using 2024 data |
| Actively managed equity ETFs | 0.44% | Investment Company Institute, 2025; asset-weighted average using 2024 data |
| First Trust Bloomberg Artificial Intelligence ETF | 0.65% | Shareholder report for the six-month period ending March 31, 2026; 50 holdings listed |
The ICI figures are category averages, not fair-value estimates for an AI strategy. The 0.65% figure is a reported ratio for the stated six-month period, so confirm the latest prospectus fee table before investing and check whether waivers or reimbursements change the amount you would pay.
Separate operating expenses from trading costs
- Expense ratio: The recurring operating expenses deducted from fund assets.
- Bid-ask spread: The difference between the price at which you can buy and sell. A wide spread can make a small or frequent trade more expensive than the expense ratio suggests.
- Commissions: Any brokerage charge that applies to your account or trading venue.
- Turnover: Frequent trading can create transaction costs and, in taxable accounts, potentially larger realized distributions.
- Acquired-fund expenses: Costs from underlying funds, where applicable, that may not appear as a simple line item in the headline ratio.
Use FINRA’s Fund Analyzer for a standardized cost comparison, then verify the assumptions against the ETF’s prospectus and your brokerage account. Compare funds over the same holding period and investment amount; a tiny annual fee difference may matter less than a persistent spread or a portfolio that does not track its stated exposure.
What implementation risks should you check?
Two ETFs with similar AI labels can deliver different investor experiences because of liquidity, trading mechanics, turnover and index tracking. Review these issues before comparing performance charts.
Liquidity, spreads and premium or discount
Check assets, average trading volume and observed bid-ask spreads. Larger assets and more active trading often make it easier to enter or exit, but neither guarantees a narrow spread during market stress. Review the ETF’s history of trading above or below its net asset value, especially if the strategy owns securities in markets with different trading hours.

Tracking difference and rebalancing
For an index ETF, compare the fund’s return with the index after fees and other implementation effects. The gap is the tracking difference; the prospectus and shareholder report can help explain it through fees, cash balances, withholding taxes, sampling, corporate actions or reconstitution costs. Record the index’s rebalancing schedule and the dates when the fund actually changes positions.
Turnover and securities lending
High turnover may be an intentional part of an active or thematic strategy, but it can raise trading costs and taxable distributions. Read the securities-lending disclosure to understand whether the fund lends shares, how collateral is handled and how lending revenue is treated. These details are implementation features, not evidence that the AI thesis will succeed.
Assets and closure risk
Review assets under management, trading activity and the sponsor’s disclosures about continuation of the fund. A small or lightly traded ETF may be harder to trade efficiently and may face greater closure risk than a larger, established fund. Closure is not necessarily a permanent loss, but it can force a taxable sale or require you to reinvest at an inconvenient time.
How should you compare two AI ETFs?
Compare both funds on the same worksheet and the same dates. A lower expense ratio is not automatically better if the cheaper fund has a narrower mandate, larger spreads, weaker liquidity or greater overlap with what you already own.

Build a simple scorecard without hiding trade-offs
Give each fund a written assessment rather than one overall star rating. For example, mark methodology clarity, concentration, overlap, cost, liquidity and implementation as strong, mixed or weak, then record the evidence and date beside each mark. A fund that wins on fees but loses on overlap may be a poor choice for your portfolio; a fund with broader holdings may still be unsuitable if its AI definition is too indirect for your objective.

- Collect primary documents. Download the latest prospectus, summary prospectus, shareholder report and holdings file from the fund website or EDGAR. Note each document’s publication date and portfolio as-of date.
- Write the objective in your own words. State whether the fund is active or passive, identify the index or manager process, and describe what qualifies as AI exposure.
- Record hard limits. Capture the 80% policy, minimum AI-revenue or exposure test, permitted countries, market-cap rules, position caps, cash limits and reconstitution schedule.
- Copy the holdings and weights. Preserve the source file and calculate the largest position, top-five total and top-10 total. Do not infer concentration from the number of holdings.
- Group economic exposures. Add sector, country, market-cap and shared-business-driver totals. Flag semiconductors, cloud, platforms or other groups that could move together.
- Measure overlap. Compare the ETF’s holdings with every fund and individual stock in your portfolio. Calculate the resulting combined weights instead of reviewing the ETF in isolation.
- Price the implementation. Record the prospectus expense ratio, any waiver, average spread, commissions, turnover, acquired-fund expenses, premium/discount history and assets.
- Check index delivery or active execution. For an index fund, compare returns with the index and note tracking difference. For an active fund, examine how consistently the manager applies the stated methodology.
- Test portfolio fit. Decide whether the position is sized for your risk tolerance and time horizon. Consider how and when you would rebalance if its weight rises sharply.
- Set a review date. Recheck the holdings, fee table and concentration after the next shareholder report, index rebalance or major portfolio change.
How should concentration risk affect your position size?
Your allocation should reflect the combined risk of the AI ETF and the rest of your portfolio, not the ETF’s label. Investor.gov notes that risk tolerance and time horizon should guide allocation and that rebalancing may be needed as weights drift.
A long time horizon does not eliminate the possibility of a large drawdown from a concentrated thematic fund. It may give you more time to recover, but you still need the capacity and willingness to hold through periods when several holdings decline together. A shorter horizon makes a large allocation to a volatile, narrowly focused strategy harder to justify because you may need to sell during a weak market.

Choose a written trigger for review: a top-10 weight above your limit, an overlap threshold with an existing fund, a methodology change, a fee increase, or a change in your own time horizon. Rebalancing can reduce drift, but it may create taxes and trading costs in a taxable account; account for those consequences before acting.
What mistakes cause investors to misjudge an AI ETF?
- Counting names instead of weights. Fifty holdings can still leave most assets in 10 companies. Calculate cumulative weights.
- Treating “AI” as a uniform exposure. Read the inclusion test; a revenue screen and a broad value-chain approach can produce very different portfolios.
- Using stale holdings. Put the as-of date beside every concentration figure and download the current file before trading.
- Comparing headline expense ratios only. Include spreads, commissions, turnover and acquired-fund expenses.
- Ignoring existing holdings. Add the ETF’s positions to your whole portfolio to reveal duplicate mega-cap exposure.
- Assuming passive means low risk. An index can be narrowly concentrated, and rebalancing rules do not guarantee diversification.
- Confusing a low price per share with affordability. The share price says nothing about the fund’s concentration, fee or expected risk.
- Overlooking implementation. Review liquidity, premium/discount behavior, tracking difference, securities lending and closure risk.
- Failing to plan for drift. A successful holding can become an oversized portfolio position; set a review and rebalancing policy in advance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI ETF lose money even when AI adoption is increasing?
Yes. Fund returns depend on the prices, earnings and valuations of the companies it owns, not on adoption alone. A concentrated portfolio can fall when interest rates, export restrictions, capital-spending expectations or one major holding’s results change.
How often should I check an AI ETF’s holdings?
Check the current holdings file before buying and after a major index rebalance, methodology change or portfolio change. A practical ongoing schedule is to review the next shareholder report and use interim files when your combined exposure approaches a limit you set.
Where can I find an ETF’s official expense ratio and holdings?
Use the fund’s latest prospectus, summary prospectus, shareholder report and current holdings file. Investor.gov identifies the fund website and EDGAR as sources for these documents; verify the date and whether a fee waiver applies.

It means the fund’s return has diverged materially from its stated index over the period measured. Investigate fees, cash, sampling, taxes, reconstitution costs and other implementation effects before deciding whether the difference is persistent.
Should I compare an AI ETF with a broad-market ETF?
Yes, if the question is whether the thematic fund adds exposure you do not already have. Compare company, sector, country and business-driver overlap; the AI ETF may simply increase positions that are already large in a broad-market fund.
