How to Evaluate AI Stocks Using Revenue Growth, Margins, and Cash Flow

The most reliable way to evaluate an AI stock is to connect three parts of its filings: the pace and quality of revenue growth, the direction of gross and operating margins, and the cash required to fund the business. Those measures can show whether demand is becoming durable and whether scale is improving economics. They cannot, by themselves, tell you whether a share price is cheap or predict your investment return.

What the three-metric framework can—and cannot—tell you

AI companies can report spectacular sales growth while spending heavily on data centers, chips, research, sales capacity, or acquisitions. Another company may grow more slowly but generate substantial cash with stable margins. Looking at revenue, margins, and cash flow together helps distinguish those situations.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The framework evaluates operating performance, not valuation. A business can be improving while its stock is overpriced, or struggling while its stock price already reflects very low expectations. A separate valuation analysis requires the share price, market capitalization, debt, dilution, forecasts, and assumptions that are not established by these operating metrics alone.

Use the company’s Form 10-K and Form 10-Q as the primary evidence. They contain the business description, risk factors, management’s discussion and analysis (MD&A), segment information, and financial statements. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s investor guidance emphasizes that “No one financial statement tells the complete story.” Read the statements and the narrative together, and use the SEC’s EDGAR database to retrieve the filings.

Step 1: Establish what the company actually sells as “AI”

Find the reported business and segment

Start with the business description in the latest 10-K. Identify the products and services, the customers that buy them, and the segment or line item in which the company reports the revenue. Then check whether the filing quantifies AI-related revenue, bookings, usage, or profit. Marketing language that mentions AI does not prove that AI is a large share of sales or earnings.

For a diversified company, AI may appear in cloud services, software subscriptions, advertising, devices, networking equipment, or professional services. If the company does not disclose a separate AI figure, record that limitation rather than treating total company revenue as an AI proxy. Compare management’s descriptions with segment results and operating statistics.

Define the economic exposure

  • Direct sellers: Companies whose products are explicitly AI software, models, or infrastructure.
  • Enablers: Chip, networking, storage, power, or data-center suppliers that benefit from AI capital spending.
  • Users: Businesses applying AI to an existing product, such as search, advertising, customer service, or industrial operations.

These categories have different revenue drivers and cost structures. A supplier may depend on a small number of large customers and infrastructure cycles, while a software provider may depend on renewals, usage, and a long sales process. Do not compare their growth or margins without explaining those differences.

How do I evaluate AI-stock revenue growth?

Use several comparable periods

Calculate year-over-year growth for annual revenue and for each comparable quarter. A simple calculation is:

(Current-period revenue − Prior-period revenue) ÷ Prior-period revenue × 100

Use the same fiscal periods and definitions. Check for a changed fiscal year, acquisitions, divestitures, foreign-currency effects, and revised segment presentation before interpreting the percentage. One unusually strong quarter is less informative than a multi-period pattern.

Read the MD&A immediately after calculating the rate. Management should explain changes in volume, price, product mix, customers, geography, and timing. Compare that explanation with segment tables and the revenue-recognition disclosures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate durable demand from timing

Ask what caused the reported sales:

  • Recurring subscriptions or consumption that could continue next period.
  • New customers and evidence that the customer base is broadening.
  • Price increases or higher usage per customer.
  • A small number of large contracts, hardware deliveries, or projects recognized at a particular time.
  • Acquired revenue that did not exist in the prior period.

Revenue is recognized sales, not automatically collected cash, durable demand, or attractive economics. Review accounts receivable, deferred revenue, renewal or usage disclosures, and customer concentration. A large customer can make a quarter look strong and the next period look weak if an order is delayed.

C3.ai’s FY2026 filing illustrates this risk: it warns that individual sales can materially affect period results and that sales timing can be difficult to predict. Treat such a disclosure as a reason to test the repeatability of growth, not as proof that growth will reverse.

Look for concentration and customer quality

Check whether one customer, distributor, cloud platform, or industry contributes a material share of revenue. Concentration can reduce negotiating power and make forecasts sensitive to one renewal or budget decision. Also check whether revenue is spread across many paying customers or concentrated in pilots and proofs of concept. A growing number of pilots is not equivalent to recurring production usage unless the filing says so.

Use a growth worksheet

Question Evidence to record Why it matters
How fast is revenue growing? Annual and quarterly revenue, with the fiscal periods used Shows the trend without relying on one headline quarter
What is driving growth? Volume, price, mix, acquisitions, currency, and timing explanations in MD&A Distinguishes operating momentum from accounting or calendar effects
Is demand broad? Customer and segment concentration disclosures Shows dependence on a few buyers or businesses
Is the revenue repeatable? Subscription, usage, renewal, backlog, or contract terms where disclosed Indicates how much future revenue is already supported
Is the AI exposure measurable? AI-specific revenue or segment disclosure, or an explicit statement that it is not separately reported Prevents treating all company sales as AI sales

How do margins matter for AI stocks?

Gross margin answers a product-economics question

Gross margin is gross profit divided by revenue. Gross profit is revenue minus the cost of sales. The ratio shows how much of each revenue dollar remains after direct delivery costs, before research, sales, administration, and other operating expenses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Track the level and direction over several periods. Investigate changes in component costs, cloud or data-center expense, manufacturing yields, support costs, pricing, and product mix. A company can grow quickly while gross margin falls if new revenue carries lower prices or higher delivery costs.

Operating margin answers a scale question

Operating margin is operating income divided by revenue. It includes operating expenses such as research and development, sales and marketing, and general and administrative costs. A rising gross margin with a falling operating margin may mean the company is reinvesting heavily in people, infrastructure, or distribution. A falling operating margin can also indicate that operating costs are growing faster than sales.

For early-stage or infrastructure-heavy businesses, losses can coexist with deliberate investment. The key question is what evidence would demonstrate improving unit economics or operating leverage: stable or improving gross margin, slower expense growth than revenue, better customer contribution, and a credible path to positive operating cash flow. Do not assume that scale will produce those outcomes without evidence.

Read growth and margins together

Pattern Questions to investigate
High growth, rising gross and operating margins Is the improvement broad-based, or concentrated in a temporary product mix or unusually large contract?
High growth, falling gross margin Are infrastructure, components, support, or pricing reducing the economics of new sales?
High growth, rising gross margin but falling operating margin How much is being invested in research, sales, and capacity, and what milestones would show that investment is paying off?
Low growth, stable margins Is the company a mature cash generator, or is demand weakening while costs have not yet adjusted?
Losses with improving cash flow Are non-cash expenses or working-capital movements explaining the difference, and are those benefits repeatable?

Example: rapid growth with margin pressure

NVIDIA reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $215.9 billion, up 65%. Its reported gross margin was 71.1%, down 3.9 percentage points, while operating expenses rose 41% to $23.076 billion. These company-reported figures are a period-specific illustration, not a market-wide benchmark or forecast. They show why revenue growth should be read beside both gross margin and operating expense growth. A large sales increase does not automatically mean every incremental dollar is becoming more profitable.

How do cash flow and investment complete the picture?

Read all three cash-flow sections

The cash-flow statement has three sections:

  1. Operating cash flow: Cash generated or consumed by the operating business, including working-capital movements and adjustments for non-cash items.
  2. Investing cash flow: Purchases of property and equipment, acquisitions, investments, and proceeds from asset sales.
  3. Financing cash flow: Debt issuance or repayment, equity issuance or repurchases, dividends, and other financing transactions.

Compare operating cash flow with net income and revenue over multiple periods. Then read the reconciliation for changes in receivables, inventory, payables, deferred revenue, stock-based compensation, depreciation, and other items. A single period can be distorted by customer prepayments or a large working-capital outflow.

Measure cash conversion

Useful ratios include operating cash flow divided by revenue and operating cash flow divided by net income. These are descriptive, not universal pass/fail tests. Investigate a low or negative ratio: it may reflect rapid investment, inventory build, delayed collections, customer prepayments reversing, or losses. Also investigate an unusually high ratio to determine whether a one-time working-capital benefit is responsible.

Account for capital spending and obligations

Capital expenditures can be substantial for companies building data centers, buying servers, or expanding manufacturing capacity. Review purchases of property and equipment, finance and operating leases, debt maturities, purchase commitments, and contractual obligations. Subtracting capital expenditures from operating cash flow gives a rough free-cash-flow view, but define exactly which items you include and use the company’s reconciliation when available.

AI infrastructure can require cash before utilization or monetization is certain. Microsoft’s FY2026 Form 10-K describes uncertainty in demand forecasts, infrastructure utilization, shifts in AI workloads, the cost of compute and energy, pricing pressure, and returns on investment. Its risk discussion states: “Demand for cloud-based and AI products and services is evolving and difficult to forecast.” That warning applies to the economic question investors should ask: who funds capacity, how quickly it is used, and whether pricing covers the full cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Distinguish investment from a funding problem

A negative free-cash-flow period is not automatically a failure. Examine liquidity, available credit, debt maturities, lease payments, purchase commitments, expected capital spending, and management’s stated assumptions. A business with sufficient liquidity and improving operating cash flow may be in an investment phase. A business with weak cash generation, rising obligations, and repeated equity or debt financing may face a funding problem even if revenue is growing.

A filing-based procedure for evaluating one AI company

  1. Download the latest 10-K and 10-Q from EDGAR. Also retain the prior-year filings so that you can compare consistent periods.
  2. Read the business and segment sections. Write down what the company sells, where AI appears, the relevant customers, and whether AI revenue is separately quantified.
  3. Build a revenue table. Enter at least three annual periods and several comparable quarters. Note acquisitions, currency effects, fiscal-calendar changes, and segment reclassifications.
  4. Read MD&A for each period. Match management’s explanations of volume, price, mix, customer wins, timing, and costs to the reported numbers.
  5. Calculate gross and operating margins. Record both the percentage and the year-over-year change. Investigate explanations involving pricing, product mix, infrastructure, components, and operating expenses.
  6. Review customer and contract risk. Check concentration, renewals, usage-based pricing, long sales cycles, backlog, pilots, and dependence on distributors or a small number of large deals.
  7. Analyze cash flow. Compare operating cash flow with net income and revenue. Identify working-capital movements and non-cash items, then review capital spending, leases, debt, and purchase commitments.
  8. Read risk factors and liquidity disclosures. Look for demand uncertainty, capacity utilization, energy and component costs, competition, financing needs, and assumptions about returns on investment.
  9. Separate reported results from forecasts. Label company guidance, non-GAAP measures, bookings, remaining performance obligations, and management targets clearly; do not mix them with GAAP results.
  10. Only then begin valuation work. Use a separate model for market capitalization, enterprise value, dilution, growth assumptions, margins, cash flow, and scenarios. The operating review does not supply a fair value or buy/sell conclusion.

How to compare two or more AI companies fairly

Use the same fiscal periods, accounting definitions, and calculation methods for every company. A comparison table should include:

Comparison axis What to record Interpretation
Revenue growth Annual and quarterly rate, source of growth, and consistency Higher growth is not automatically better if it depends on one-off deals or acquisitions
Gross margin Level, direction, and explanation of cost or mix changes Shows economics after direct delivery costs
Operating margin Level, direction, and expense growth Shows whether overhead and investment are scaling with revenue
Operating cash flow Amount, margin as a share of revenue, and relationship to net income Shows cash generation after working-capital effects
Investment burden Capital expenditures, leases, purchase commitments, and acquisitions Shows cash required to build and maintain capacity
Funding and liquidity Cash, debt, maturities, credit availability, and equity issuance Shows how much room the company has if demand or utilization disappoints
Customer and segment concentration Largest customers, distributors, and reported segments Reveals dependence on a narrow demand base
Identified AI exposure AI-related revenue or profit disclosed, or “not separately reported” Prevents an unsupported comparison of AI intensity

Differences in business model, revenue mix, investment phase, and accounting presentation can make apparently similar percentages misleading. Explain those differences rather than ranking companies by one headline growth rate.

What persistent losses or falling margins should you investigate?

Losses are a signal to examine the path, not a verdict

C3.ai, Inc. reported net losses of approximately $470.4 million in FY2026, $288.7 million in FY2025, and $279.7 million in FY2024. The company also described uncertainty about achieving profitability. These are company-specific, period-specific figures, not a conclusion about AI software companies generally. When a company reports recurring losses, examine revenue quality, gross-margin direction, operating-expense growth, cash burn, liquidity, and the financing required to continue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Falling margins have several possible causes

  • Lower prices or discounts used to win strategic customers.
  • A shift toward lower-margin hardware, hosting, or implementation work.
  • Higher cloud, energy, component, support, or logistics costs.
  • Temporary under-utilization of newly built infrastructure.
  • Rapid hiring or sales expansion ahead of expected demand.
  • Acquisition-related costs or changes in accounting presentation.

Use the filing’s explanation and test whether later periods confirm it. Do not assume that a temporary explanation will resolve without evidence of improved utilization, pricing, cost control, or operating leverage.

Common mistakes when evaluating AI stocks

  • Using “AI” as a revenue estimate. Confirm the exposure in segment and revenue disclosures.
  • Annualizing one exceptional quarter. Compare several consistent periods and inspect deal timing.
  • Looking only at gross margin. Operating expenses can absorb gross profit even when product economics look strong.
  • Treating net income as cash. Reconcile earnings to operating cash flow and inspect working capital and non-cash items.
  • Ignoring infrastructure commitments. Include capital spending, leases, debt, and purchase commitments in the funding analysis.
  • Comparing non-GAAP figures as if they were identical. Read each company’s reconciliation and compare GAAP measures first.
  • Confusing business quality with share valuation. A strong operating trend does not establish an attractive price.
  • Ignoring uncertainty language. Risk factors about demand, utilization, pricing, energy, components, or financing identify assumptions that can break the thesis.

How to keep the analysis current

Company examples and figures change with every filing. The figures cited above come from FY2026 filings available in the evidence set current to October 13, 2026; subsequent 10-Ks and 10-Qs may change the results and outlook. Refresh the revenue, margin, cash-flow, liquidity, and risk-factor sections after each new filing, and note any change in fiscal periods or segment definitions before updating your comparisons.

Maintain a dated worksheet with the filing period, reported values, calculation definitions, and management explanations. That record helps prevent a current quarter from being compared with an earlier period that uses different segment presentation or includes an acquisition.

Where can I find revenue, margins, and cash flow?

Use the SEC’s EDGAR database for the company’s 10-K and 10-Q filings. Revenue and operating results appear in the income statement and segment disclosures; gross and operating margins can be calculated from the reported figures; cash generation appears in the statement of cash flows; and MD&A, risk factors, liquidity notes, and contractual-obligation disclosures provide the context. No single table replaces reading these sections together.
