Start by marking a clear price level, compare trading activity with that stock’s recent norm, and watch whether price holds above the level. Treat the result as one chart-reading clue—not a forecast or a substitute for researching the company and weighing the risk.
Set the price level before judging a breakout
Choose a level to watch before the stock approaches it. A common reference is the upper edge of a defined trading range; a prior swing high may also be relevant. The level is an analytical reference based on past prices, not a guaranteed resistance boundary or a promise that the stock will reverse there.

Use the same chart timeframe when comparing candidate setups. A level that looks clear on a daily chart may look different on an intraday chart, so do not switch timeframes mid-assessment to make a signal appear stronger.
Compare volume with the stock’s own recent activity
Raw share volume is not comparable across all stocks: companies differ in share count and typical trading activity. Instead, compare the day or period you are assessing with that stock’s recent average or usual volume on the same chart. Charles Schwab describes above-average volume as one way traders assess participation in a price move (Schwab, “3 Ways Volume Can Help Confirm Price Trends,” June 5, 2026).

There is no universal volume multiple that establishes a valid buy signal. The cited sources do not establish a threshold or a success rate that makes a breakout dependable.
Read the price move and volume together
If price crosses above the level you marked while volume is above that stock’s recent norm, chart readers may interpret the move as showing stronger participation. That is a technical-analysis heuristic, not proof that the breakout will continue. A rising price accompanied by declining volume may be a reason to question the move’s strength, but it does not by itself establish what will happen next (IG, “How do volume and volatility affect breakout trade decisions?”; Schwab, “3 Ways Volume Can Help Confirm Price Trends,” June 5, 2026).

- As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
- You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
- To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.
Volume records trading activity; it does not tell you who traded, why they traded, or whether buying or selling pressure will dominate next. Heavy volume alone is not confirmation that a stock will rise.

Watch for a failed breakout
After a move above the level, observe whether price stays above it or quickly falls back below and returns to the prior range. A prompt retreat weakens the breakout interpretation. A brief crossing—whatever the volume—does not justify treating the move as a confident forecast.

Compare candidate setups without treating them as a score
For two stocks you are evaluating, use the same timeframe and ask the same questions. This comparison can make your reasoning more consistent, but it is not a validated system for predicting returns.
- How clearly defined is the watched price level?
- How far did price move above it, and is it outside the prior range?
- How does volume compare with that stock’s own recent average?
- Has price held above the level, or quickly retreated?
- How liquid is the stock, and what execution trade-offs would your order type involve?
Make the investment decision broader than the chart
Price and volume do not establish a company’s value or whether the investment suits your goals and risk tolerance. The SEC’s Investor.gov says online investing does not remove the need to do homework: “Although online trading saves investors time and money, it does not take the homework out of making investment decisions.” See Investor.gov, “Online Investing”.

Before investing, be able to explain why you are buying and consider the possibility of loss. Short-term trading in volatile stocks carries significant risk; social-media attention is not a substitute for independent research (SEC Investor.gov, “Investor Alert: Thinking About Investing in the Latest Hot Stock? Understand the Significant Risks of Short-Term Trading Based on Social Media,” January 29, 2021).

The order type affects what happens after you decide to trade. The SEC explains the key trade-offs in its “Stop, Stop-Limit, and Trailing Stop Orders” investor bulletin, updated August 18, 2026. Check your broker’s availability and rules for each order type.

- Market order: Generally seeks prompt execution at the best available price. The execution price is not guaranteed and may differ from the last-traded price.
- Buy limit order: Sets the maximum price you are willing to pay, but the order may not fill.
- Stop order: When triggered, becomes a market order. Its stop price is not a guaranteed execution price.
These trade-offs matter especially when a stock is moving quickly: choosing an order type does not make a chart signal more reliable, and the desired execution may not occur at the price you expect.
