There is no universally correct cash percentage for a mutual fund. Evaluate a fund’s cash by reading its prospectus, checking the dated holdings in its latest shareholder report or SEC filing, identifying what the report counts as cash or short-term instruments, and comparing the allocation over several periods with the fund’s mandate and benchmark. Cash can support liquidity and flexibility, but it also leaves less money invested in the assets the fund is supposed to own. A high figure is not automatically prudent, and a low figure is not automatically aggressive.
What a mutual fund’s “cash” figure actually tells you
A reported cash holding is a snapshot of assets that the fund has not invested in its main securities, or that it classifies as highly liquid instruments. The number may include currency, bank deposits, cash equivalents, Treasury bills, repurchase agreements, commercial paper, or other short-term debt, depending on the fund’s reporting format. Those assets do not have identical credit risk, interest-rate risk, yield, or liquidity.

The figure also has a date. A portfolio disclosed in a shareholder report or regulatory filing may describe the fund weeks or months earlier, not the portfolio you would receive at the moment you place an order. Treat the percentage as dated evidence rather than a live account balance.

Cash can serve several purposes:
- Meeting shareholder redemptions without selling less-liquid securities at an unfavorable time.
- Paying expenses, settling trades, or holding proceeds between investments.
- Giving the manager flexibility to buy securities when opportunities arise.
- Temporarily reducing exposure when the prospectus permits a defensive position.
It can also create a cost: money held outside the fund’s target assets may participate less in a rising stock or bond market. That trade-off is a reason to investigate, not proof that the manager made a mistake.

Why there is no “right” cash allocation
Cash has a different meaning in a money-market fund, a stock fund, a bond fund, and an asset-allocation fund. The fund’s objective and strategy provide the proper reference point. Comparing a growth-stock fund’s cash percentage with a money-market fund’s percentage is not useful because the funds are designed to hold different kinds of assets.
The Securities and Exchange Commission’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy explains in its June 13, 2016 prospectus bulletin that a fund may be allowed to move temporarily into cash or relatively safe instruments in anticipation of a market downturn, even when that would not normally match its primary strategy. The permission describes what the prospectus allows; it does not establish that a particular fund is forecasting a downturn or currently exercising that permission.
Do not use an industry average as a target. A percentage can be reasonable for one fund and inconsistent with another fund’s mandate. Your question is whether the holding is permitted, understandable for the strategy, and persistent or changing in a way that matters to your decision.

Start with the fund name, objective, benchmark, and principal investments. Then classify the fund you are analyzing.
| Fund type | How to interpret cash and short-term instruments | Useful comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Money-market fund | Short-term debt, cash, and cash equivalents are the core portfolio, not an incidental reserve. | Its stated maturity, credit-quality, liquidity, yield, and regulatory requirements. |
| Stock fund | Cash may support redemptions, trading, or a temporary defensive posture, but it reduces exposure to equities. | Its equity mandate, benchmark, and cash trend over matching periods. |
| Bond fund | Cash can help manage flows and interest-rate positioning; short-term debt may still carry credit or rate risk. | Duration, credit mix, benchmark, and the fund’s stated flexibility. |
| Balanced or target-date fund | Cash is one part of a broader asset allocation and may be held at the fund level or through underlying funds. | The strategic allocation, rebalancing policy, and benchmark. |
| International or specialized fund | Settlement timing, foreign-exchange transactions, and market access can affect temporary liquidity. | The strategy’s geographic or sector exposure and its own reporting history. |
Read the objective in the statutory prospectus and the summary prospectus, if one is provided. A fund marketed as fully invested in a particular asset class may still have permission to hold cash, but the extent and circumstances of that permission should be clear in the strategy and risk sections.
Step 2: Read the prospectus for permission, purpose, and risk
The prospectus is the document that explains what the fund is trying to do and what it is allowed to do. The SEC’s investor guidance identifies standardized sections that make funds easier to compare. Read these sections in order:
- Investment objective: Identify the return or exposure the fund seeks and the time horizon implied by that objective.
- Principal investment strategies: Look for language about minimum investment percentages, temporary defensive positions, cash equivalents, repurchase agreements, or short-term securities.
- Principal risks: Note liquidity risk, market risk, credit risk, interest-rate risk, and any risk associated with defensive investing or concentrated holdings.
- Fee table and expense examples: Record the share class, ongoing expenses, and any purchase, redemption, or account fees that apply to you.
- Past performance and management discussion: Use these sections for context, not as proof that a particular cash decision caused a return.
Mark the exact wording that gives the manager flexibility. “May invest” is not the same as “currently invests,” and a broad permission does not reveal how often the manager uses it. The prospectus establishes the boundaries; the holdings report shows one point inside those boundaries.
Step 3: Find the most recent dated holdings information
Use two documents together. The prospectus describes the fund’s rules; the shareholder report provides period-specific portfolio information. The SEC recommends reviewing the prospectus and the most recent shareholder report when researching a mutual fund.

Shareholder report
Locate the portfolio-of-investments schedule in the latest annual or semiannual shareholder report. Record the report date and the portfolio’s “as of” date. The report may list cash separately from short-term investments, or combine categories in a way that requires reading the notes.
SEC filings and EDGAR
Search the fund’s filings on the SEC’s EDGAR system for shareholder reports and Form N-PORT information. The SEC states that funds file Form N-PORT monthly, but only information for the final month of each fiscal quarter is generally made public. It also describes first- and third-fiscal-quarter holdings being disclosed through an N-PORT exhibit. Consequently, public holdings can lag the manager’s current portfolio.
Write down the filing type, filing date, portfolio date, and share class when relevant. “Latest available” means the newest document you found, not a guarantee that the holdings are current today.
Step 4: Determine what the report includes in “cash”
Do not copy a website’s single cash number without checking the underlying line items. Classify each position according to the fund’s own disclosure.
| Reported item | Questions to ask | Why the distinction matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cash or currency | Is it an operating balance, foreign currency, or both? | Currency balances may move with settlement activity and exchange rates. |
| Cash equivalents | What instruments does the notes section include? | “Cash equivalent” is a reporting category, not a promise of identical risk or return. |
| Treasury bills or government securities | What are the maturity dates and issuers? | These are investments with their own maturity and interest-rate characteristics. |
| Repurchase agreements | What collateral, counterparty, and maturity information is disclosed? | They are short-term financing transactions, not simply an idle bank balance. |
| Commercial paper or other short-term debt | What is the issuer’s credit quality and maturity? | Short maturity does not eliminate credit or liquidity risk. |
| Receivables, payables, or unsettled trades | Are these shown separately from cash? | Net cash can differ from gross cash when trades and obligations are pending. |
A money-market fund illustrates why this step matters. The SEC’s November 4, 2024 investor bulletin explains that these funds invest in liquid, short-term debt securities as well as cash and cash equivalents. Read the securities schedule and maturity information rather than treating the entire portfolio as a bank deposit. Money-market fund yields change over time with short-term interest rates, and the shares are not bank deposits insured by the FDIC.
Step 5: Measure the allocation and its direction over time
Calculate the cash share only after deciding which disclosed line items belong in the comparison. A simple calculation is:
cash share = (cash and selected cash-like holdings ÷ total net assets) × 100

Build a dated series from at least several reporting periods. Your worksheet can use columns for:
- Portfolio “as of” date.
- Report or filing date.
- Cash and cash-equivalent line items.
- Short-term securities counted separately.
- Total net assets.
- Calculated percentage and the calculation method.
- Any disclosed strategy, rebalancing, merger, or unusual redemption event.
Interpret the direction cautiously:
- Stable: May indicate an operating liquidity reserve or a recurring strategic allocation.
- Rising: May reflect subscriptions and redemptions, pending purchases, portfolio changes, or a defensive move.
- Falling: May reflect investment of cash, rebalancing, or the settlement of transactions.
A single snapshot cannot establish why the manager held the position. Look for an explanation in the shareholder report, management discussion, prospectus supplement, or other fund filing. If no explanation is disclosed, describe the pattern without assigning a motive.
Step 6: Weigh liquidity benefits against reduced market exposure
Potential benefits
- Liquidity can help the fund meet redemption requests without immediately selling less frequently traded securities.
- A liquid reserve can give the manager time to settle trades and adjust positions.
- Permitted defensive investing can reduce exposure to a market segment temporarily, although it does not guarantee a better outcome.
The SEC’s discussion of liquidity risk explains why assets that cannot be sold quickly at a price close to their carrying value can create problems during stressed markets. Cash and readily saleable instruments can help with that operational challenge.
Potential costs
- Cash and short-term assets may earn less than the securities the fund’s strategy targets during a rising market.
- A large reserve can make the fund’s actual exposure differ from the exposure implied by its name or benchmark.
- Short-term instruments can still have credit, interest-rate, or liquidity risk, so “cash” does not mean risk-free or purchasing-power-safe.
Do not convert these trade-offs into an invented “cash drag” percentage. The effect depends on the instruments held, the period, the benchmark, fees, security selection, and the timing of purchases and sales.
Step 7: Put cash in the context of performance, benchmark, and fees
Compare the fund with its stated benchmark and with genuinely similar funds over identical periods. If the fund lagged, cash may be one possible contributor, but so may sector allocation, security selection, duration, credit losses, foreign-exchange movements, trading costs, or fees. The disclosed cash percentage alone cannot identify the cause.
| Comparison | How to do it | What it can and cannot show |
|---|---|---|
| Fund versus stated benchmark | Use matching start and end dates and the same return convention where available. | Shows relative results; it does not isolate the effect of cash. |
| Fund versus similar funds | Match objective, asset class, geography, risk level, and share class where possible. | Highlights differences in mandate and implementation; it is not a controlled experiment. |
| Expense ratios and other fees | Read the prospectus fee table for your share class and account. | Shows a direct return reduction from costs, not the reason for a particular cash balance. |
| Cash trend versus returns | Align each dated cash observation with the corresponding performance period. | May reveal timing, but correlation does not prove the manager’s intent or causation. |
The SEC’s July 23, 2025 fees bulletin states: “Fees and expenses reduce the value of your fund’s investment returns.” Include those costs in any decision. A fund with a modest cash balance can still be unattractive if its expenses are high for the role it serves, while a fund with somewhat more liquidity may be reasonable when its mandate and costs are appropriate.
How to compare two funds you may buy
Compare funds only when they serve a similar role in your portfolio. Use one worksheet for both and answer each question with a dated document reference.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Calling a fund “overweight cash” without a reference
Problem: The phrase has no meaning unless you name the comparison: the prospectus target, the benchmark, the fund’s own history, or a peer group.
Fix: State the fund, share class when material, portfolio date, calculation method, and comparison basis.
Treating a website’s current-looking number as live
Problem: Public holdings can lag because of reporting schedules.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix: Use the filing or shareholder report’s “as of” date and distinguish it from the publication date.
Assuming all short-term instruments are cash
Problem: A Treasury bill, repurchase agreement, commercial paper, and bank deposit have different risks and terms.
Fix: Reproduce the fund’s line-item categories and read the notes before combining them.
Reading a high cash balance as a market forecast
Problem: Cash may reflect redemptions, settlement, rebalancing, or operating needs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix: Attribute a forecast only when the fund or manager explicitly documents one; otherwise describe the observable allocation and trend.

Assuming cash guarantees safety
Problem: Cash equivalents can have credit, interest-rate, inflation, or liquidity risk, and a cash-heavy fund can still lose value elsewhere in its portfolio.
Fix: Read the principal-risk section and identify the actual instruments.
Blaming underperformance on cash alone
Problem: Returns reflect the whole portfolio, timing, fees, and benchmark differences.
Fix: Compare matching periods and investigate other exposures before drawing a conclusion.
Using money-market-fund standards for a stock fund
Problem: Money-market funds are designed around liquid, short-term debt, while stock funds are not.
Fix: Compare each fund with funds that have the same investment purpose.
A practical pre-investment checklist
- Have you identified the fund’s objective, benchmark, and asset class?
- Did you read the prospectus objective, strategies, principal risks, and fee table?
- Did you locate the latest shareholder report and relevant SEC filing?
- Did you record both the filing date and portfolio “as of” date?
- Did you identify the share class and use its applicable expenses?
- Did you separate cash, cash equivalents, and short-term debt as the report does?
- Did you calculate the percentage using a consistent denominator?
- Did you review several reporting periods rather than one snapshot?
- Did you look for a disclosed explanation of a material change?
- Did you compare performance with the fund’s own benchmark over matching periods?
- Did you account for fees before judging returns?
- Are you avoiding claims that cash guarantees safety or proves a market forecast?
Bottom line: judge fit and evidence, not a magic number
Evaluate cash holdings as part of the fund’s job. The prospectus tells you what the manager may do; dated holdings show what the fund reported doing; several periods reveal whether the allocation is persistent or temporary. A liquidity reserve can be useful, but it may also reduce exposure to the fund’s intended investments. Short-term instruments require their own risk analysis, and money-market funds must be assessed under their distinct mandate. Make the investment decision only after weighing the documented cash policy, composition, trend, benchmark results, liquidity needs, and fees together.
