Evaluate a flexi-cap fund by reconstructing its portfolio over several dated month-end disclosures, then testing each change against the scheme’s mandate, market-cap and sector exposure, concentration, turnover, costs, risk measures and benchmark-relative results. A single snapshot or a recent return cannot show whether a manager’s decision was sound.
Under the Securities and Exchange Board of India’s (SEBI) February 26, 2026 categorisation, a flexi-cap fund is an open-ended dynamic equity scheme investing across large-cap, mid-cap and small-cap stocks, with at least 65% of total assets in equity and equity-related instruments. That 65% is a category floor, not a required split among the three market-cap segments.

What a flexi-cap fund is—and what the label does not tell you
SEBI’s February 26, 2026 circular describes the category as “An open ended dynamic equity scheme investing across large cap, mid cap, small cap stocks.” The defining feature is flexibility: the portfolio manager can change the relative exposure to those segments rather than staying within a prescribed large-, mid- or small-cap allocation.

| Allocation mix | No fixed category-wide percentage for large, mid or small caps | The mandate, investment objective and current portfolio of the fund |
| Reporting | Monthly portfolio disclosure with ISINs, alongside risk-o-meter information | Several dated files, not only the latest month |
The 65% requirement is measured at the category level; it does not mean that 65% must be in stocks at all times within each market-cap segment. A fund can move the balance among large-, mid- and small-cap holdings, subject to its current scheme documents and applicable regulations. Read the scheme information document, factsheet and any addendum for material changes before interpreting a portfolio shift.

Use month-end portfolios, not screenshots
SEBI’s disclosure text provides that a mutual fund must publish each scheme’s portfolio, including ISINs, as of the last day of the month on the fund’s website and the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) website within 10 days after month-end, in a user-friendly, downloadable spreadsheet format. The disclosure is accompanied by risk-o-meter information. Download a continuous sequence—at least six to twelve month-end files when available—so that a one-month trade is not mistaken for a change in strategy.
Start with the asset-management company (AMC) website. Use the ISIN to match the same security when its name, ticker or share class changes. Record the “as of” date shown in every file; the publication date is not the portfolio date. AMFI also maintains a scheme-wise investment-disclosure portal organised by fund and quarter. SEBI’s mutual-fund resource page links to official performance data, AMFI stock categorisation, monthly factsheets and related disclosures.
Read the mandate and benchmark together
Write down the scheme’s investment objective, benchmark name, permitted instruments, plan type and any material-attribute change or addendum. A portfolio that looks aggressive or defensive can be consistent with one mandate and inconsistent with another. For performance comparisons, use the benchmark named by the scheme for the period under review; do not substitute a convenient index after seeing the result.
Keep a reproducible worksheet
For each month, create columns for security ISIN, company, market-cap classification, sector, number of shares, market value, portfolio percentage and any cash or debt position. Add the scheme’s total assets, equity percentage, top-five and top-ten weights, sector totals, turnover, expense ratio, risk-o-meter and benchmark return for the same date range. This turns a narrative impression into an auditable comparison.
A step-by-step method for evaluating portfolio changes
- Confirm the mandate and review window. Select the current scheme information document and factsheet, note the benchmark and plan type, and define a period such as the latest 12 completed months. Do not combine a new mandate with performance from an earlier one without marking the change.
- Map total-asset and market-cap allocation. For every dated portfolio, calculate equity and equity-related assets as a share of total assets, then separate large-, mid- and small-cap holdings using the classification applicable on that date. Track cash, debt and other permitted exposures separately. A meaningful style change is usually persistent across multiple files, not a single month’s rebalance.
- Measure position changes. For each holding, record new entries, complete exits and weight changes. A position that rises from 1% to 4% has a different portfolio impact from a position that rises from 8% to 11%, even though both gain three percentage points. Distinguish price-driven weight changes from trades where the share count changed; a stock can become a larger percentage of the portfolio without the manager buying more.
- Inspect concentration and sectors. Compare the largest positions, top-five and top-ten totals, and sector weights over the same dates. Note whether dependence has shifted toward a small group of companies, one sector or one market-cap segment. Concentration is a description of risk structure, not proof that future returns will be higher or lower.
- Separate trading activity from the resulting portfolio. Review portfolio-turnover figures alongside entries, exits and weight changes. High turnover means more trading activity; it does not by itself establish skill or poor management. Ask whether the resulting holdings show a coherent change in the stated approach and whether the additional trading appears proportionate to the outcome and costs.
- Match returns, benchmark and risk dates. Compare scheme and benchmark returns over several matching periods—such as one, three and five years where available—and check the scheme and benchmark risk-o-meters. Do not rank a direct plan against a regular plan, or a calendar-year return against a trailing-period benchmark. Read returns with the portfolio and risk data rather than as a standalone score.
- Check the costs of the plan you would buy. Record the current expense ratio for direct or regular plan, as applicable, and any total-expense disclosure. Factsheet figures can change; an old fee should not be treated as today’s fee. Note whether the number is a base expense ratio or another expense measure described by the AMC.
- Write the decision case and the unknowns. For each material change, state what changed, whether it persisted, how it altered concentration or market-cap exposure, and whether it fits the documented approach. If public disclosures do not establish the manager’s reason, label the reason unknown rather than inferring intent.
How to read market-cap and asset-allocation changes
Look for persistence, not a single percentage
Calculate each segment’s weight at every month-end and chart the sequence. A move from predominantly large-cap holdings toward mid- and small-cap stocks may increase sensitivity to valuation, liquidity and market drawdowns; a move in the opposite direction may reduce those exposures. The observation is useful only when the allocation remains visible across several dates or is clearly explained by a documented mandate change.
Separate allocation changes caused by market movements from active decisions. If small-cap prices rise while share counts are unchanged, the small-cap percentage can increase mechanically. Compare both market value and number of shares where the file provides them, and flag months with large market-wide moves.

Check the equity floor in context
The category requires at least 65% of total assets in equity and equity-related instruments. Record the actual percentage each month and identify any cash, debt or other permitted holdings. A temporary cash balance may have a different implication from a repeated reduction in equity exposure, but the disclosure alone does not reveal the manager’s motive. The scheme documents and dated explanations, if any, are the appropriate evidence.

Company classifications can change as market values and official categorisation change. Use the classification applicable to the period being reviewed and keep the source date in your worksheet. Reclassifying an existing holding can create an apparent market-cap shift even when the fund did not trade.
How to assess concentration and sector rotation
Company concentration
Calculate the portfolio percentage of the largest holding, top five and top ten. Record both the level and the direction of change. A portfolio whose top ten rise steadily deserves a different risk discussion from one in which the same names remain but their weights fluctuate around a stable range.
Sector concentration
Group holdings using a consistent sector taxonomy and compare each sector’s percentage across the files. Look for simultaneous changes in company and sector concentration: adding several companies from one sector can raise sector risk even when no single position is unusually large. Conversely, replacing one large position with several smaller companies may reduce company-specific concentration while leaving sector exposure high.
Do not turn concentration into a forecast
Concentration analysis tells you what the portfolio depends on. It does not demonstrate that a concentrated portfolio will outperform or that diversification will prevent losses. Use it to test whether the risk profile matches your tolerance and the scheme’s stated approach.
What turnover can—and cannot—tell you
Portfolio turnover summarises trading activity over a period. Compare its direction with the actual entries, exits and weight changes in the monthly files. A rise accompanied by a durable change in market-cap or sector allocation may indicate an intentional repositioning; a rise with little change in ending holdings may reflect frequent short-term trades or rebalancing.

High turnover can increase transaction activity and may affect expenses, but turnover alone is not a quality rating. Low turnover can reflect conviction, a buy-and-hold approach or simply few opportunities. Judge the figure against the scheme’s investment style, expenses, tax implications where relevant, and the resulting portfolio. Use the period and definition stated in the factsheet because turnover measures are not meaningful when periods or calculation conventions differ.
Compare performance and risk on equal terms
Use the scheme’s named benchmark
For each review period, record the fund return, benchmark return and any stated excess or shortfall. Keep the dates identical and distinguish trailing returns from calendar-year returns. If the scheme changed benchmark or attributes, mark the break rather than presenting one uninterrupted series.
Read risk-o-meters with reported risk statistics
The 2021 SEBI disclosure requirements address scheme and benchmark risk-o-meters alongside scheme performance and portfolio information. Capture both risk-o-meters as dated observations. Factsheets may also report standard deviation, beta and Sharpe ratio. These statistics describe historical volatility, market sensitivity and risk-adjusted return under the stated calculation period; they do not predict the next portfolio outcome.
Interpret a mixed result correctly
A fund can trail its benchmark while taking less reported risk, or beat it while accepting greater concentration or volatility. The relevant question is whether the combination of return, risk and portfolio changes is acceptable for your objective—not whether one number is the highest in a peer table.
Compare two flexi-cap funds without creating a false ranking
When comparing funds, use the same month-end dates, return periods and plan types. The following axes keep the comparison focused on evidence that can be observed:
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer | Interpretation limit |
|---|---|---|
| Asset and market-cap allocation | How much is in equity, cash or debt, and large-, mid- and small-cap stocks on the same dates? | Different allocations may both fit a flexi-cap mandate; no mix is automatically superior. |
| Top holdings and sectors | Are the largest positions or sectors becoming more concentrated? | Concentration describes dependence, not future performance. |
| Turnover and style consistency | Does trading activity correspond to a persistent, documented change in the portfolio? | Turnover is not proof of skill or failure. |
| Benchmark-relative returns | How did each fund perform against its own named benchmark over matching periods? | One period or one ranking cannot establish manager quality. |
| Risk measures | What are the dated risk-o-meters and reported volatility, beta or Sharpe measures? | Historical risk statistics are not forecasts. |
| Applicable expense ratio | What is the current direct- or regular-plan expense for the plan you would purchase? | Old factsheet fees may no longer apply. |
Fund size and manager tenure can provide context, but neither demonstrates that a particular portfolio change benefited investors. AMFI and SEBI are the appropriate official pathways for performance, disclosure and company-categorisation data.

Using a factsheet without over-reading it
A July 2026 factsheet for Baroda BNP Paribas Flexi Cap Fund illustrates the fields worth collecting: regular- and direct-plan expense ratios, portfolio turnover, standard deviation, beta, Sharpe ratio, stock count, and scheme and benchmark risk-o-meters. Its risk-o-meter information is dated July 31, 2026.
The same dated example reports a portfolio-turnover ratio of 1.01, a regular-plan base expense ratio of 1.86% and a direct-plan base expense ratio of 0.85%. Those figures describe that named scheme, plan and July 2026 factsheet; they are not category averages, forecasts or recommendations. Verify the current factsheet before using any number in a decision, and do not compare a base expense ratio with a differently defined total-expense figure without checking the labels.
How often does a flexi-cap fund change its portfolio?
You can observe changes at least monthly because the required portfolio disclosure is as of the last day of each month and is due within 10 days after month-end. That reporting frequency does not mean every holding changes every month, nor does it reveal the exact trade date. Use the monthly sequence to identify persistent changes, and treat the interval between files as a limit on what you can know about the manager’s timing.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Judging from the latest portfolio alone
Problem: A single file cannot show whether a position is new, temporary or long-standing.
Correction: Download a dated sequence and mark entries, exits and weight changes.
Assuming the label guarantees a balanced mix
Problem: “Flexi-cap” does not prescribe equal or stable large-, mid- and small-cap weights.
Correction: Measure the scheme’s actual allocation and compare it with its documents.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAttributing a motive that is not disclosed
Problem: A trade may have many possible explanations, none established by the holding file.
Correction: Describe the observed change and call the reason unknown unless an attributable disclosure explains it.

Comparing mismatched returns or plans
Problem: Different dates, benchmarks or direct and regular plans can produce a misleading ranking.
Correction: Align dates, use each scheme’s named benchmark and compare the plan you would actually buy.
Treating an expense ratio or turnover number as permanent
Problem: Fees and activity vary by plan and reporting date.
Correction: Record the current, labelled figure and its date each time you review the fund.
Confusing a market-driven weight change with a trade
Problem: Rising prices can increase a holding’s percentage without a purchase.
Correction: Compare share counts, market values and portfolio percentages where disclosed.

Use one row per material change and answer these questions from the dated files and scheme documents:
- What changed? Name the security, market-cap segment, sector or asset class and quantify the percentage-point movement.
- When did it change? Record the month-end dates and distinguish one-month movements from persistent trends.
- Was it an active trade or a valuation effect? Compare share count, market value and weight where available.
- How did risk change? Note top-five and top-ten concentration, sector concentration, market-cap exposure and risk-o-meter.
- What did trading cost? Compare turnover and the applicable expense ratio over the same period.
- Did the outcome justify the change? Compare benchmark-relative returns over matching periods without treating the result as proof of causation.
- Does it fit the mandate? Check the investment objective, permitted instruments, benchmark and any material-attribute addendum.
- What remains unknown? Record any manager rationale or trade-level detail that public disclosures do not establish.
If you cannot complete these fields from current documents, the appropriate conclusion is that the evidence is insufficient for a confident portfolio-change judgment—not that the fund is automatically good or bad.
Bottom line
A flexi-cap fund’s flexibility makes a dated portfolio history essential. Start with the SEBI category requirement and the scheme’s own mandate, then compare monthly holdings, market-cap and sector weights, concentration, turnover, costs, risk measures and benchmark-relative performance on consistent dates. The result should be a documented explanation of how the fund’s risk and style changed, with unknown motives clearly separated from observable facts.
