The reliable way to evaluate a financial-services company is to connect four statements: how it earns money, how quickly the balance sheet is growing, whether credit and market risks are rising, and how much capital and liquidity protect that earnings stream. Quarterly earnings per share is only the starting point.
Use the earnings release to locate the important changes, then verify each change in the 10-Q or equivalent filing. Build a three-period comparison, separate recurring operations from unusual gains, and test management’s explanation against balances, prices, funding costs, credit losses and capital. The process below is designed primarily for banks and diversified bank holding companies; later sections show how to adapt it to insurers, broker-dealers and asset managers.

Start with the filing, not the headline EPS
An earnings release is a useful map, but the regulatory filing is the evidence base. Read both together. Begin with the income statement, balance sheet, cash-flow information, segment tables, credit-quality disclosures, capital tables and management’s discussion and analysis.

Use a repeatable four-step quarterly workflow
1. Build a three-period bridge
Put the current quarter beside the immediately preceding quarter and the same quarter a year earlier. Add a three- to five-year trend when the company provides one. Show both dollar changes and percentage-point changes; a margin moving from 3.20% to 3.36% is a 16-basis-point increase, not 0.16% growth.
| Line item | Current quarter | Prior quarter | Year-ago quarter | What to ask |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Net interest income | Reported amount | Reported amount | Reported amount | Did dollars rise because of balances, pricing or an accounting item? |
| Noninterest revenue | Reported amount | Reported amount | Reported amount | How much is recurring fee income versus markets or securities gains? |
| Provision expense | Reported amount | Reported amount | Reported amount | Did reserves release or build, and does that fit credit trends? |
| Noninterest expense | Reported amount | Reported amount | Reported amount | Are costs growing more slowly than revenue? |
| Net income and EPS | Reported amount | Reported amount | Reported amount | What changed in share count, taxes and unusual items? |
| Loans, deposits and earning assets | Ending and average balances | Ending and average balances | Ending and average balances | Is growth funded, priced for risk and supported by liquidity? |
2. Separate recurring from unusual items
Mark securities-sale gains, fair-value marks, purchase-accounting accretion, restructuring, litigation, acquisition costs, tax benefits and every management-defined adjustment. Read each non-GAAP reconciliation rather than accepting the label “adjusted.” A gain that appears every quarter is not automatically exceptional, and an expense excluded from adjusted results may be an ordinary cost of operating the business.
3. Test management’s explanation
Translate commentary into measurable drivers. If management says revenue improved, check volumes, pricing, product mix, funding costs, provision expense and fee activity. If it cites expense control, compare absolute expenses, personnel counts where disclosed and the efficiency ratio. If it attributes a credit change to one borrower or sector, inspect concentration and nonperforming-asset tables for corroboration.
4. Record a verdict with conditions
Classify the quarter as improving, stable, deteriorating or inconclusive, and write the evidence for that classification. A single quarter can be inconclusive when a merger, major mark or seasonal trading result overwhelms the underlying trend.
Analyze earning power: net interest income and NIM
Decompose net interest income
For a bank or lender, net interest income (NII) is the income earned on loans and other earning assets minus the interest paid on deposits and wholesale funding. Break the change into loan yields, funding costs, net interest spread, average balances and mix.

A company management discussion filed with the SEC states that it monitors “the yields on our loans, the costs of our funding sources, our net interest spread, and our net interest margin.” That is a practical checklist: a higher NII number is not necessarily better if it comes from temporary marks or expensive balance-sheet growth.
Confirm the NIM denominator
Net interest margin (NIM) is a rate, and companies do not always use the same denominator. The Federal Reserve commonly defines NIM as net interest income divided by average earning assets. Some issuer disclosures define it using average loans or another average earning-asset base. Tax-equivalent NIM also adds the tax benefit of tax-exempt income. Write the denominator and convention next to every NIM you compare.
Use NIM = annualized net interest income ÷ average earning assets when that is the company’s stated method. Do not rank a lender’s 4.00% NIM against another’s 3.50% until you know whether both use the same denominator, tax-equivalent treatment and portfolio mix.
Explain why NIM moved
- Asset yields: Floating-rate repricing, new-loan pricing and securities yields can lift income.
- Deposit pricing: Higher rates paid on interest-bearing deposits or a shift away from noninterest-bearing deposits can compress spread.
- Wholesale funding: Borrowings and brokered deposits may become more expensive or change the funding mix.
- Balances and mix: Commercial, consumer, mortgage and securities portfolios carry different yields and risk.
- Purchase-accounting effects: Accretion from an acquisition can raise reported NII and later run off.
Always pair NIM with NII dollars and earning-asset growth. A wider margin on shrinking balances may be less durable than a modest margin on healthy, well-priced growth.
Dissect noninterest revenue instead of treating it as one line
Create a bridge for service charges, trust and securities processing, card and payment fees, brokerage, insurance, investment banking, trading, securities-sale gains and fair-value changes. UMB’s quarterly presentation illustrates this useful disaggregation by listing trust and securities processing, trading and investment banking, service charges, insurance fees, brokerage fees, bankcard fees and investment-securities gains separately.

| Revenue type | Typical durability question |
|---|---|
| Trust, custody, payments and account services | Are client balances, transaction volumes and contracts stable? |
| Card and interchange fees | Are purchase volumes and credit performance supporting the increase? |
| Brokerage, insurance and investment-management fees | Are fee-producing assets and client flows rising, and is the fee rate holding? |
| Investment banking and trading | Could the result reverse with market conditions or deal volume? |
| Securities-sale and fair-value gains | Is this a realized or mark-to-market event rather than an operating revenue stream? |

| Metric | Why it matters | Warning pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Provision expense | Current-period estimate of expected credit losses | A large release despite worsening delinquencies or concentrations |
| Allowance or reserve level | Loss cushion relative to portfolio risk | Reserve declining faster than risk indicators |
| Net charge-offs | Loans actually written off after recoveries | A sudden spike or acceleration in a specific portfolio |
| Delinquencies | Early sign of repayment stress | Broad deterioration across consumer or commercial books |
| Nonperforming assets | Loans and assets no longer producing as expected | Increase alongside weak collateral or cash flow |
| Criticized or classified exposure | Regulatory and internal view of vulnerable credits | Growth concentrated in one borrower, geography or sector |
| Uninsured deposits | Potential liquidity sensitivity | Rapid outflows or an unusually high concentration |
The SEC business-performance discussion identifies loan-portfolio performance, delinquency and expected or actual credit losses as central considerations. Fifth Third’s quarterly release places net charge-offs, nonperforming assets and capital ratios beside growth and profitability, which is the right combined scorecard.
Growth is higher quality when it is funded, priced for risk and accompanied by stable or improving credit indicators. Investigate a sudden provision release, reserve build, charge-off spike, concentration increase or large uninsured-deposit change instead of accepting headline EPS growth.
Check capital, liquidity and funding capacity
Bank capital measures
Review common equity tier 1 (CET1), total risk-based capital, leverage, tangible common equity and tangible book value per share. Compare capital generated after dividends and buybacks with the rate of balance-sheet growth. A fast-growing institution that distributes most of its earnings may have less capacity to absorb losses than its EPS suggests.
Funding and liquidity
Examine deposit growth, interest-bearing deposit cost, the noninterest-bearing deposit mix, uninsured deposits and available borrowing capacity. Read liquidity sources and maturities, not only the period-end cash balance. A bank can report strong profits while becoming more dependent on costly wholesale funding.

Adapt the regulatory lens
Do not compare a bank’s CET1 ratio directly with an insurer’s statutory risk-based-capital ratio. They are different regulatory systems with different risk weights, capital definitions and intervention rules. State the basis whenever you compare institutions.
Connect efficiency, returns and shareholder value
Use noninterest expense, the efficiency ratio, operating leverage, return on assets (ROA), return on common equity (ROE) and return on tangible common equity (ROTCE) together. The efficiency ratio is generally noninterest expense divided by revenue under the issuer’s stated convention; lower is usually better, but one-time revenue gains can make it look artificially strong.
As an illustration rather than a universal benchmark, Fifth Third reported for Q2 2026 adjusted efficiency of 57.1%, adjusted ROA of 1.08%, adjusted ROTCE of 15.6%, NIM of 3.36%, net charge-offs of 0.30% and CET1 of 9.93%. Those are issuer-reported figures for that quarter, not target levels for every financial company.
Make per-share results reconcile
Check diluted share count, repurchases, dividends, new issuance, preferred-stock actions and accumulated other comprehensive income (OCI). Bank of America’s Q1 2026 10-Q demonstrates why equity analysis must account for repurchases, dividends, preferred-stock changes and OCI movements. EPS can rise because shares were bought back even when total net income is flat; tangible book value per share can move because of OCI without a comparable change in operating earnings.
Use non-GAAP measures with strict discipline
Anchor the analysis in GAAP net income, revenue, assets, liabilities and equity. Then inspect adjusted income, pre-tax pre-provision income, tangible book value, fully taxable-equivalent (FTE) NII, FTE NIM and adjusted efficiency calculations.

Carter Bankshares explicitly says its non-GAAP measures supplement, rather than replace, GAAP and supplies reconciliations. Follow that standard:
- Locate the exact adjustment and its tax effect.
- Ask whether the item is genuinely unusual or recurs every quarter.
- Check whether ordinary personnel, technology, servicing or credit costs are being excluded.
- Compare adjusted and GAAP trends over several periods, not only the current quarter.
- Use the company’s definition consistently when comparing peers.
Compare financial companies on aligned axes
When evaluating two or more companies, build one table with identical definitions and periods.
| Comparison axis | Alignment required |
|---|---|
| NIM or spread | Same denominator, annualization and tax-equivalent convention |
| Loans, deposits and fee-producing balances | Average and ending balances, organic growth separated from acquisitions |
| Provision, charge-offs and nonperforming assets | Same portfolio scope and period; note reserve methodology |
| Fee mix | Recurring service, trust, payments and insurance fees separated from market gains |
| Efficiency and expense growth | GAAP and adjusted figures shown with reconciliations |
| Capital and liquidity | CET1, leverage, tangible equity, deposit composition and borrowing capacity |
| Returns | ROA, ROE and ROTCE with average-equity definitions |
| Book value | Book and tangible-book value per share, including OCI and share-count effects |
Adjust your interpretation for business mix, accounting conventions, tax-equivalent treatment, acquisitions and one-off gains. A custody-heavy bank, a credit-card lender and a mortgage originator can have very different “normal” margins and fee patterns.

Insurers
Replace bank NIM and loan-credit tables with statutory income, premiums, loss and combined ratios, reserve development, investment yield and risk-based capital (RBC). Separate current accident-year underwriting from reserve releases and catastrophe effects. Use the insurer’s statutory filing and generally accepted accounting statements together because they answer different solvency and profitability questions.
Broker-dealers and asset managers
Focus on client assets, net flows, fee rate, trading revenue, margin balances, regulatory capital and liquidity. Distinguish market-driven asset appreciation from net new client money. For broker-dealers, funding and margin requirements can change faster than reported earnings; for asset managers, a stable fee rate with persistent outflows is not durable growth.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Chasing EPS: Reconcile EPS to net income, share count, tax effects and unusual items.
- Ranking NIM without definitions: Record each company’s denominator and tax-equivalent method first.
- Celebrating loan growth alone: Pair growth with funding cost, pricing, reserves, charge-offs and concentrations.
- Treating all fees as recurring: Split contractual and transaction fees from trading, fair-value and securities-sale gains.
- Ignoring liquidity: Review uninsured deposits, available borrowing and liability maturities.
- Using adjusted results as the only truth: Start with GAAP and demand a transparent reconciliation.
- Comparing unlike regulators: Explain the regulatory basis before comparing CET1, leverage or RBC.
- Overreacting to one quarter: Use the three-period bridge and a multi-year trend, then identify what would confirm or disprove the interpretation next quarter.
A one-page quarterly worksheet
Fill this out for each company before forming an investment view:
- Record GAAP revenue, NII, noninterest revenue, provision, expenses, net income and diluted EPS for the current, prior and year-ago quarters.
- Write the NIM denominator, tax-equivalent convention, average loans and average earning assets.
- List loan, deposit, earning-asset and fee-producing-balance growth, both average and ending.
- Enter delinquencies, nonperforming assets, net charge-offs, reserves and criticized exposure.
- Record CET1, leverage, tangible equity, tangible book value per share, uninsured deposits and borrowing capacity.
- Calculate or copy efficiency, ROA, ROE and ROTCE, labeling GAAP or adjusted.
- List every unusual item and its after-tax effect.
- Write one sentence explaining the quarter’s main driver and one condition that could invalidate that explanation.
What a durable quarter looks like
The strongest pattern is not the highest single metric. It is recurring fee or interest income supported by stable balances, sensible pricing, controlled funding costs, contained credit losses, adequate reserves, capital generation after distributions and dependable liquidity. A quarter dominated by a margin spike, provision release, securities gain or buyback-driven EPS increase deserves a more cautious interpretation.
