To estimate your new paycheck, keep your salary, pay frequency, filing status, Form W-4 settings, benefits and retirement deductions constant. Change only the state withholding, residency period and physical work locations. In a full year worked outside California, your paycheck may increase when California withholding no longer applies, but a midyear move can still leave you with California tax and a Form 540NR filing.
Federal income-tax withholding and FICA do not disappear when you move. Your paystub is also a withholding record, not a final tax bill. The reliable estimate is a side-by-side payroll calculation followed by a separate move-year California tax review.

What changes when you move, and what does not
A useful comparison has two columns: your California payroll under the old facts and your Texas payroll under the new facts. Do not change several assumptions at once, or you will not know whether the difference came from the state, your benefits or your federal Form W-4.
| Paycheck item | What to do in the comparison |
|---|---|
| Gross wages | Keep the same annual salary, bonus assumptions and pay frequency. |
| Federal income-tax withholding | Use the same filing status, dependents, W-4 entries and additional withholding unless your circumstances changed. |
| Social Security | Apply the 2026 employee rate of 6.2% until cumulative wages reach the $184,500 wage base. |
| Medicare | Apply the 2026 employee rate of 1.45% to all wages. There is no wage base. |
| Additional Medicare withholding | An employer begins withholding an additional 0.9% after it pays that employee more than $200,000 in the calendar year. That employer threshold is not identical to every taxpayer’s final Additional Medicare Tax liability. |
| California state withholding | Model the period you were a California resident and any California-source compensation after the move, rather than simply setting the line to zero on the moving date. |
| Benefits and payroll deductions | Keep health insurance, health savings account, flexible spending account, 401(k) and other pretax deductions unchanged unless the move changes eligibility or elections. |
The Social Security and Medicare rates and wage base are summarized by the Internal Revenue Service. These are 2026 figures; do not carry them into another tax year without checking the current IRS limits.

Collect the inputs before calculating
Save a recent paystub and write down the assumptions that drive withholding. You need the same data for both state scenarios.
- Annual base salary, expected bonuses, commissions, equity vesting and other taxable compensation.
- Pay schedule: weekly, biweekly, semimonthly or monthly, plus the number of remaining pay periods in the move year.
- Federal filing status and the dependents or credits entered on Form W-4.
- Any Step 2 multiple-job entry, dependent credit, other-income amount or extra withholding on Form W-4.
- Pretax deductions and their per-pay-period amounts, including retirement and medical plans.
- Year-to-date wages, federal withholding, Social Security wages and Medicare wages.
- The date you moved, the date your employer changed your work location and each day you physically worked in California after moving.
- California withholding already taken and any estimated payments or prior-year balance due.
Also record whether your compensation is paid by a California employer, whether you work remotely, and whether a bonus, restricted stock or stock option relates to services performed over several periods. The payer’s address alone does not determine where services were performed.
Build the federal and payroll-tax portion first
Calculate gross pay per check
For a salary paid on a regular schedule, divide annual salary by the number of scheduled checks. For example, a $120,000 salary paid biweekly produces $4,615.38 of gross pay per check before deductions ($120,000 ÷ 26). Keep bonuses separate so an irregular payment does not distort the ordinary paycheck comparison.
Subtract pretax deductions consistently
Subtract the same eligible pretax deductions in both columns. A deduction can reduce federal taxable wages and sometimes state taxable wages, but the treatment depends on the plan and state rules. Use the taxable-wage fields on the actual paystub rather than assuming every deduction receives identical treatment.
Estimate federal income-tax withholding
Enter your current Form W-4 information into the IRS Publication 505 (2026), Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax guidance or the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator. Federal withholding normally remains the largest tax line that is unrelated to the state move.

For a 2026 return, the IRS announced standard deductions of $16,100 for single or married filing separately, $32,200 for married filing jointly and $24,150 for head of household in its 2026 tax inflation adjustments announcement. Those are annual tax-return parameters. They are not an automatic increase in each paycheck, and payroll withholding can differ if your W-4 does not claim the standard deduction assumptions.
Apply FICA and watch the year-to-date thresholds
For 2026, multiply subject wages by 6.2% for employee Social Security and by 1.45% for employee Medicare. Social Security withholding stops after your cumulative wages from that employer reach $184,500. Medicare continues without a wage base. After that employer has paid you more than $200,000 during the calendar year, it must begin withholding the extra 0.9% Medicare amount from later wages.

The state move does not change those federal payroll rates.
Model the California piece instead of assuming it disappears
Identify your residency period
California’s residency test is fact-specific. The Franchise Tax Board says an individual is a resident when present in California for other than a temporary or transitory purpose, or domiciled in California while outside the state for a temporary or transitory purpose. A new lease, driver’s license or moving date is evidence, but none is automatically decisive by itself. See the FTB’s Residents guidance for the factors used in the determination.
For a part-year resident, the FTB states that California tax applies to worldwide income received while you are a California resident, plus California-source income received while you are a nonresident. The rule is described in Part-year resident and nonresident.

Allocate pay by where the services were performed
Physical workdays can matter after the move. If you are a nonresident and perform some services in California, the FTB gives a workday-ratio approach: California workdays divided by worldwide workdays, multiplied by the compensation for the relevant period. Keep a calendar of California, Texas and other workdays so the allocation is based on actual services rather than the employer’s headquarters.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For example, if a compensation period covers 200 worldwide workdays and 12 days physically worked in California while you were a nonresident, the starting allocation is 12 ÷ 200, or 6%, of the compensation tied to that period. This is an allocation method, not a guarantee that every type of compensation follows the same rule. Review the FTB’s Publication 1100: Taxation of Nonresidents and Individuals Who Change Residency for the applicable facts.
Flag equity and deferred compensation
Restricted stock, stock options, bonuses earned over time and deferred compensation can connect payment to an earlier service period. Publication 1100 explains that employee stock-option income may retain California sourcing based on service history. A payment received after you leave is therefore not automatically outside California tax, and services performed after departure are not automatically California-source either. Put each award, vesting date and service period on a separate line for review.
Expect a move-year return
A midyear move commonly requires a California part-year return, generally Form 540NR, even if your first Texas paycheck has no California withholding. The return reconciles worldwide income during the resident period, California-source income during the nonresident period, withholding and any estimated payments. A refund or balance due can therefore differ sharply from the amount visible on one post-move paystub.
Compare a steady-state Texas year with the transition year
Make two separate estimates. Combining them hides the reason your cash flow changes.

| Scenario | Assumptions | What the estimate answers |
|---|---|---|
| Steady-state year after the move | You are no longer a California resident, perform services outside California, and have no California-source compensation. | What a normal full year of payroll might look like after the transition and payroll records are corrected. |
| Move year | You were a California resident for part of the year, then moved; workdays, compensation timing and withholding must be assigned to the correct periods. | How much cash may arrive during the year and what California filing or settlement may remain. |
| Post-move California work | You live in Texas but physically perform some services in California. | How California-source wages may continue and whether payroll withholding matches the workday allocation. |
For the steady-state column, ask payroll what state withholding applies after the work location is changed. A Texas paystub may show no California withholding once the California obligation ends, but that is a payroll result to verify, not proof that every Texas resident has identical tax treatment. The available official material for this calculation does not establish a blanket Texas individual-wage-tax statement, so confirm the current setup with your employer and appropriate tax guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use this step-by-step worksheet
- Choose the tax year. The federal numbers in this guide are for 2026. If your move is in another year, replace the rates, wage base and deduction amounts with that year’s official figures.
- Set the pay frequency. Divide annual wages by the actual number of checks, and list separate bonus or equity payments.
- Freeze the personal assumptions. Enter filing status, dependents, W-4 settings, pretax deductions and additional withholding once, then copy them to both state columns.
- Calculate federal withholding. Use the IRS estimator or payroll calculation using the same W-4 data for each column.
- Calculate FICA. Apply 6.2% Social Security through the $184,500 2026 wage base, 1.45% Medicare without a wage base, and the additional 0.9% Medicare withholding rule after the employer-paid $200,000 threshold.
- Mark the residency change. Record the date supported by your facts and documents; do not treat a payroll address change as the entire legal analysis.
- Map workdays. Allocate services physically performed in California, Texas and elsewhere for each pay, bonus, award or vesting period.
- Apply California withholding. Use the actual resident and nonresident periods and California-source amounts. If your payroll system cannot reflect the allocation, treat the mismatch as a withholding issue to reconcile.
- Subtract deductions and taxes. The result is estimated net pay per check. Multiply by the remaining checks to estimate cash received during the year, but keep the expected tax-return settlement separate.
- Validate the result. Compare the first corrected paystub with the worksheet and save year-to-date records for the eventual California and federal returns.
Update payroll promptly after the move
Ask human resources or payroll to change your work location, state withholding setup and any local reporting fields effective on the correct date. Submit a new Form W-4 only when your federal circumstances changed; moving states by itself does not require different federal filing-status entries.
Review the first two paystubs after the change. Check the state name, state wages, state withholding, work location and year-to-date totals. If California withholding continues, ask whether it reflects a known California workday or compensation allocation. If it stops while you still have California-source wages, increase withholding or make an estimated payment only after determining the amount that is actually attributable to California.
Why your paycheck, refund and balance due differ
Payroll withholding is an advance based on elections, payroll formulas and the information available to the employer. Your annual return uses actual wages, deductions, credits, residency periods, source rules and payments. Three events commonly create a difference:
- The employer changed the state code later than your physical move.
- A bonus or equity award was withheld using a flat payroll method but has a different final California source allocation.
- Your W-4 did not reflect a spouse’s income, multiple jobs, dependents, other income or a change in deductions.
Use the IRS estimator during the year, especially after a salary change, marriage, second job, large bonus or major W-4 revision. For California, retain paystubs, the move documentation, workday calendar, award statements and Forms W-2 or 1099 so the Form 540NR allocation can be supported.

Troubleshooting common estimate errors
The first Texas paycheck is not higher
Check whether the pay period contains California workdays, whether payroll has processed the location change, and whether a bonus or benefit deduction changed. Compare each withholding line—not just net pay—to the pre-move stub.
California withholding stopped, but you worked in California
Do not infer that no withholding means no tax. Document the California service days and ask payroll how the wages will be sourced. You may need to adjust withholding or make an estimated payment for the California-source portion.
Your estimate is high because it removed all California tax
Reinsert worldwide income received during the California-resident period, California-source wages after the move, and any equity or deferred compensation tied to California services. Then calculate the part-year return rather than treating the year as a full Texas year.

Social Security withholding changed during the year
Check cumulative wages. The 6.2% employee withholding applies only up to the 2026 $184,500 wage base; Medicare continues, and the additional 0.9% withholding can begin after the employer-paid $200,000 threshold.
What your estimate can and cannot tell you
This worksheet estimates wage-related take-home pay. It does not measure housing costs, property tax, sales tax, insurance premiums, commuting, relocation expenses or cost-of-living changes. Those may dominate your household budget even when the payroll calculation is correct.
The strongest estimate has a clearly labeled steady-state column and a separately documented move-year column. It preserves federal assumptions, applies the 2026 payroll limits correctly, traces California income to residency and physical services, and treats the final refund or balance due as a separate annual tax result.
