Estimate the raise in two like-for-like calculations: first estimate your net pay at your current basic salary, then estimate net pay at the new basic salary, keeping the same pay frequency, tax year, jurisdiction and deduction settings. Subtract the first estimate from the second. That difference is your estimated increase in take-home pay—not the gross raise and not a universal percentage.
The calculation in one line
Use an official payroll or tax estimator for your country. Run it with your current basic pay and record the resulting net amount for one pay period. Run it again with only the basic pay changed to the proposed salary. Then calculate:

The calculation must include more than income tax. Depending on your jurisdiction and choices, the additional gross pay can change social-insurance contributions, pension or retirement deductions, student-loan repayments, salary-sacrifice amounts, benefits and other payroll items. Your result is an estimate of withholding or payroll deductions, not a guarantee of your final tax bill.
Why a gross raise and a net raise differ
A basic-pay increase raises gross earnings. Your take-home pay changes only after payroll applies the marginal tax and contribution rules to the extra income and deducts any earnings-linked or elected items. The extra money can therefore be smaller than the headline raise.
Marginal treatment applies to the additional pay
The relevant question is how the next unit of earnings is treated, not the average percentage deducted from your whole salary. Additional income may fall into different tax or contribution bands, or may interact with thresholds and repayment rules. Without your country, tax year, filing status and payroll details, no defensible universal net-pay percentage can be stated.

Deductions can move with salary
Pension or retirement contributions set as a percentage of pay generally change when basic pay changes. Student-loan repayments can also rise when earnings pass the applicable repayment threshold. Benefits, insurance, salary sacrifice and other elected deductions may be fixed, percentage-based or affected by the new salary. Enter them as the estimator requests instead of subtracting income tax alone.
Withholding is not the final liability
Payroll withholding is a payment made during the year. The eventual tax calculation can differ if your inputs are incomplete or inaccurate, if another job or income source is omitted, or if a provision is outside the estimator. Treat the result as planning information and reconcile it with the first payslip after the raise.

- Country and the payroll tax jurisdiction, such as a state or local authority where applicable.
- The tax year in which the higher salary will be paid.
- Current basic salary, proposed basic salary and the raise’s effective date.
- Pay frequency: weekly, fortnightly, four-weekly or monthly.
- Gross pay for the latest period and, if requested, year-to-date gross pay.
- Tax code, filing status or withholding status used by your payroll.
- Year-to-date income-tax withholding and other year-to-date amounts requested by the official calculator.
- Pension or retirement contribution rate, salary-sacrifice election and employer-benefit information that affects taxable pay.
- Student-loan repayment settings where relevant.
- Recurring deductions such as insurance, union dues or other benefits that will remain unchanged or will be recalculated after the raise.
- Any second job, multiple-job allocation or other income that the estimator requires.
Mark which items will change because of the raise. If your employer changes your pension percentage, benefits or salary-sacrifice election at the same time, those are separate assumptions and should be changed in the second run rather than silently left at the old values.

Six-step method for estimating the difference
- Identify the jurisdiction and year. Select the tax year in which the increased pay will be received and use the tax authority or payroll calculator for that jurisdiction. Rules and thresholds are not interchangeable between countries or years.
- Record the baseline. Enter your current basic pay, pay frequency, tax code or withholding status, year-to-date figures and every relevant deduction. Save the estimated net amount per pay period and, if useful, the annualised amount.
- Change the salary assumption. Replace only the basic-pay figure with the proposed salary. Keep all other assumptions identical unless the raise also changes a contribution, benefit or payroll election.
- Run the new-pay estimate. Record the estimated net amount using the same pay frequency and tax-year settings. If the raise starts partway through the year, enter the current-year and year-to-date information requested by the tool.
- Subtract like from like. Subtract the baseline net amount from the new net amount. This is your estimated extra take-home pay for that pay period. Multiply by the number of pay periods only if both estimates represent a normal full period and no partial-period adjustment is involved.
- Check the first real payslip. Compare gross pay, taxes, contributions and deductions with your estimate. If they differ, identify which input or payroll timing assumption changed before altering withholding or contribution elections.
Write down the assumptions next to the result. For example: “Monthly estimate, 2026–27 tax year, one job, pension percentage unchanged, student-loan setting unchanged.” That note prevents a later comparison from mixing different bases.
Which official calculator should you use?
The right tool depends on where your employer runs payroll. The United Kingdom and United States tools below answer different questions and should not be treated as universal calculators.
| Jurisdiction and tool | Primary purpose | Inputs and features described by the authority | Items included or handled |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom: HM Revenue & Customs “Estimate your Income Tax for the current year” | Estimate employee Income Tax, National Insurance and take-home pay for the current year | Employee pay and deduction details; use the service once for each job when you have multiple jobs | Income Tax, National Insurance, pension contributions and student-loan repayments; stated tax year is 6 April 2026 through 5 April 2027 |
| United Kingdom: HM Revenue & Customs per-period PAYE calculator | Calculate PAYE for a particular payment | Tax code, payment date, pay period and gross pay; prior-period totals may also be needed | Guidance updated 6 April 2026 for tax year 2026–27 |
| United States: Internal Revenue Service Tax Withholding Estimator | Estimate federal income-tax liability and appropriate withholding using personal details | Filing status, income, adjustments, deductions, credits, per-period withholding and year-to-date withholding | Federal income-tax withholding; directions require federal amounts to be separated from state or local taxes, Social Security, Medicare and other withholdings; Additional Medicare Tax is handled for higher-income situations |
Readers outside these jurisdictions need their own tax authority’s calculator or payroll guidance. A UK result cannot be applied to a US paycheck, and a US federal result does not represent every deduction on a US paycheck.
United Kingdom: estimate the change in take-home pay
Use the current-year service for a planning estimate
HM Revenue & Customs describes its current-year service as being for employees who pay tax and National Insurance each month through an employer. For the current year identified on the service, 6 April 2026 through 5 April 2027, it estimates Income Tax and National Insurance and can include pension contributions and student-loan repayments when estimating take-home pay.
Enter your current salary and the relevant payroll details, record the estimated net amount, then repeat with the new basic salary. If you have more than one job, HMRC instructs you to use the service once for each job. Do not combine jobs into one salary figure unless the service specifically tells you to do so.

Use the per-period PAYE calculator when payment timing matters
The per-period guidance was updated on 6 April 2026 for tax year 2026–27. It asks for the tax code, payment date, pay period and gross pay, and says prior-period totals may also be needed. This is useful when the increase begins on a specific payroll date, when year-to-date totals affect PAYE, or when you need to model a particular payslip rather than a general annual estimate.
Check deductions separately
Confirm whether your pension is taken before or after tax according to your employer’s payroll arrangement, and whether the contribution is a percentage of basic pay or a fixed amount. Enter student-loan information when requested. If the raise is accompanied by a benefits change, model the changed benefit in the second run; otherwise retain the existing setting for a like-for-like comparison.
United States: estimate federal withholding and separate payroll taxes
Start with the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator
The Internal Revenue Service estimator uses personal income and withholding details. Its questions can include filing status, income, adjustments, deductions and credits, along with withholding for the current pay period and year-to-date withholding. For a raise, use your latest paystub to enter the baseline information, save the result, then change the wage assumption to the new salary while keeping the other facts constant.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEnter federal withholding separately
IRS directions caution users to distinguish federal income-tax withholding from state and local taxes, Social Security, Medicare and other withholdings. Enter only the federal amounts where the estimator requests federal withholding. A federal estimate is not a complete take-home-pay calculation if your paycheck also contains state or local tax, insurance, retirement, flexible-spending or other deductions.
Understand Social Security and Medicare treatment
The IRS says Form W-4 instructions do not address Social Security or Medicare taxes; those taxes are fixed percentages withheld from pay, while the estimator does account for Additional Medicare Tax in higher-income situations. Keep those payroll taxes in your net-pay comparison, but do not present the federal estimator as if it calculated every line on your payslip.
Review the result after the raise
The IRS describes federal income tax as a pay-as-you-go tax and recommends checking withholding after changes in wage income. Too little withholding can leave tax due and may lead to a penalty; too much withholding reduces current take-home pay until a refund. Revisit the estimator if the raise changes another job, filing status, deductions, credits or retirement contributions.

Raises that start partway through the year
A midyear increase creates two different planning questions: what the next normal paycheck may look like, and how much additional net income you may receive for the rest of the year. Do not multiply a full-year difference by every pay period if the new salary applies only after the effective date.

- Enter the actual pay already received before the raise, including withholding and contributions requested by the tool.
- Model the new salary from the first pay date on which it applies.
- For the remaining-year total, multiply the per-period difference by the number of full increased periods still scheduled, then account separately for any partial period or retroactive adjustment.
- Compare the first increased payslip with the estimate, because payroll may apply the change, arrears or a revised code on a different date than expected.
Annualising a normal-period estimate is useful for budgeting, but it is not the same as forecasting the exact tax-year outcome when the salary changes during the year.
Worked example of the subtraction method
The arithmetic is simple; the estimator supplies the two net figures. Suppose a calculator shows an estimated monthly net pay of 2,480 at the current basic salary and 2,615 at the proposed salary, with the same tax year, monthly frequency, filing or tax-code status, pension setting and other deductions. The estimated increase is:
2,615 − 2,480 = 135 per month
That 135 is an illustration of the comparison method, not a tax result for any country or person. The correct figures for you must come from the official calculator using your own payslip and jurisdictional inputs. If the raise also changes a pension percentage or benefit deduction, run a third scenario so you can see how much of the difference comes from the salary change and how much comes from the changed election.
How to explain a smaller-than-expected increase
Tax or contribution treatment changed
The extra salary may be withheld at a different marginal rate or may trigger an earnings-linked contribution or repayment. Compare the tax and contribution lines on both estimates rather than looking only at gross pay.

Payroll used different timing
A raise effective after the payroll cut-off may first appear on a later payslip. Retroactive pay, a partial period or a one-time adjustment can make the first increased check unlike a normal check.
Other withholding was entered incorrectly
In the United States, check that federal withholding was not mixed with state or local tax, Social Security or Medicare when using the federal estimator. In the United Kingdom, verify the tax code, payment date, pay period and prior-period totals in the PAYE calculation.
The estimate omitted another job or income source
Multiple jobs and additional income can change withholding or annual liability. Add the information required by your jurisdiction’s official tool and, for UK calculations, use the HMRC service once for each job as instructed.
After the first increased paycheck
Use the payslip as a reconciliation, not as proof that the original estimate was wrong. Compare these items in order:
- Effective date and gross basic pay.
- Tax code or withholding status.
- Income-tax withholding.
- National Insurance, Social Security and Medicare, where applicable.
- Pension or retirement contribution.
- Student-loan repayment.
- Benefits, insurance, salary sacrifice and other recurring deductions.
- Year-to-date totals.
If one line differs, correct that input and rerun the estimate. If the difference is caused by a changed tax code, filing status, job, benefit or contribution election, update the relevant payroll record rather than trying to force the payslip to match a prior assumption. In the United States, check withholding after a wage change; in the United Kingdom, check the code, payment date and prior totals used by the PAYE calculation.
