How to Estimate Your Social Security Retirement Benefit Using Your Statement

The most useful Social Security estimate is the one built from the earnings record the Social Security Administration (SSA) has on file for you. Sign in to your my Social Security account, open your Statement, verify each year’s covered earnings, and use the personalized Retirement Calculator to compare claiming at 62, your full retirement age (FRA), 70, or another date. Treat every figure as an estimate: your result depends on your birth year, earnings history, future work, and the date you start benefits.

Start with the estimate tied to your SSA earnings record

Your Social Security retirement amount is not determined by a generic replacement-rate rule or by your final paycheck. SSA calculates it from your covered earnings record and the age at which you begin retirement benefits. The practical way to estimate it is therefore:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Open your current Social Security Statement in a personal my Social Security account.
  2. Check the earnings history for missing or incorrect years.
  3. Run the account’s personalized Retirement Calculator.
  4. Compare the monthly amounts at age 62, your FRA, age 70, and your intended claim date.
  5. Keep future earnings assumptions and the calculator’s dollar basis consistent when comparing results.

SSA says the online Statement includes your current earnings record and estimates for retirement, disability, and survivor benefits. The retirement figure is a planning projection, not a promise of the exact payment you will receive. Confirm details in your account and in current SSA guidance before filing.

Get your Statement

Use a personal my Social Security account

Create or sign in to your personal my Social Security account and open the Statement. The account version is the best starting point because the retirement estimator can use the earnings record already associated with your Social Security number rather than requiring you to retype every year.

If you need a paper Statement

People who have not created an account and are not receiving benefits are mailed a paper Statement three months before turning 60. SSA’s FAQ says a requested mailed Statement generally arrives in four to six weeks. Allow that time before a planning deadline, and use the newest Statement available because later earnings may change the record.

Read the earnings history before trusting the number

The earnings table is the foundation of the estimate. Compare each year with tax returns, Forms W-2, payroll records, and your own employment history. Look for a year that is blank even though you worked in Social Security-covered employment, an amount that is materially different from your records, or earnings assigned to the wrong year.

SSA bases the retirement calculation on covered earnings. If the record is wrong, contact SSA and resolve the discrepancy before treating the calculator result as dependable. The specific documentation and correction procedure can vary, and the material available here does not establish a complete step-by-step correction checklist, so follow the current instructions SSA gives you for your case.

Do not assume that a high salary automatically appears in full. Only earnings covered by Social Security count, and annual earnings above the taxable maximum do not produce additional benefit credit for that year.

Run the personalized Retirement Calculator

What the account estimator compares

SSA says its account-based Retirement Calculator compares estimates for:

  • Starting at age 62, the earliest standard retirement-claiming age.
  • Starting at your full retirement age, which depends on your birth year.
  • Starting at age 70.

You can select another age or date and enter expected future annual income. That lets you test a realistic plan rather than choosing between only three preset ages.

A practical sequence

  1. Open the Retirement Calculator from your Statement.
  2. Record the monthly estimate shown for age 62.
  3. Record the estimate at your FRA.
  4. Record the estimate at age 70.
  5. Add your intended claim age, such as 64, 67, 68, or 69.
  6. Enter plausible future annual earnings if you expect to keep working.
  7. Save or export the figures with the date you ran the estimate and the assumptions you entered.

Recording the date and assumptions matters. A later Statement can include another year of earnings, and changing expected income can change the projection even when your planned claiming age stays the same.

Use the manual-entry calculators when you need a second scenario

SSA’s Online Calculator

SSA’s Online Calculator lets you enter the covered earnings shown on your Statement and model different claiming dates. It does not access your private earnings record, so you must supply the information yourself. Enter the covered amounts year by year as shown; do not substitute gross household income, investment income, or an employer’s entire payroll figure.

Quick Calculator versus a record-based estimate

SSA describes its Quick Calculator as rough because it does not access your actual earnings record and makes assumptions about earlier earnings. It can provide a fast orientation when you have not gathered your Statement, but it should not replace the personalized account estimator for a filing decision.

Detailed Calculator

SSA identifies Detailed Calculator version 2026.2 as released July 13, 2026. That release updates projected benefit increases and average-wage increases using assumptions from the 2026 Trustees Report. If you use a downloaded or bookmarked version, check the version and release date so you understand which assumptions are built into the projection.

Understand what creates your retirement amount

The highest 35 years of earnings

SSA states: “We base your retirement benefit on your highest 35 years of earnings and the age you start receiving benefits.” In practical terms, the calculation indexes earlier covered earnings and selects the 35 years that produce the highest indexed total.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you have fewer than 35 years of covered earnings, SSA uses zeros for the missing years. A zero year can therefore pull down the average used in the calculation. Continuing to work can help when a new year replaces one of those zeros or replaces a relatively low year among the 35 being used.

Why a later working year can help

Suppose your record contains 30 years of covered earnings. A further year does not simply add a separate bonus; it can replace one of the five zero years. If you already have 35 years, an additional high-earning year may replace the lowest indexed year and increase the benefit, while an additional low-earning year may not change the highest-35 calculation. The account estimator is the appropriate way to test your own record.

Covered earnings limits

For 2026, SSA says one Social Security credit is earned for each $1,890 of earnings, up to four credits in the year. SSA also states that covered earnings are counted only up to $184,500 in 2026; earnings above that amount do not increase the retirement benefit calculation for that year. These are 2026 figures, not permanent thresholds. Future years can have different amounts.

Find your full retirement age

Full retirement age is the age at which the unreduced retirement benefit under the standard formula is payable. It is set by birth year. SSA’s chart says the FRA gradually rose for people born in 1938 or later and reaches 67 for people born in 1960 or later. Use the birth-year chart in your Statement or on current SSA guidance rather than assuming that everyone has an FRA of 65 or 67.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SSA applies a special calendar rule: a January 1 birthday is treated as belonging to the previous year for FRA purposes. That can move someone into a different birth-year row on the chart, so enter your exact birth date when using an estimator.

Claiming point How to interpret the estimate
Age 62 Earliest standard retirement-claiming age; starting before FRA permanently reduces the monthly amount for the months claimed early.
Your FRA Reference point for the unreduced amount under the standard claiming adjustment.
After FRA Delaying can increase the monthly amount through delayed retirement credits, subject to the age-70 limit.
Age 70 Latest age at which delaying increases the retirement benefit; delaying beyond 70 does not add another increase.

Compare age 62, FRA, 70, and your intended date

Starting before full retirement age

Claiming before FRA reduces the monthly benefit for the months you claim early. The reduction is tied to the number of months between your start date and FRA, so claiming at 62 is not equivalent to claiming a few months before FRA.

Starting at full retirement age

Claiming at FRA gives you the standard unreduced amount for your record. It can be a useful baseline when comparing an earlier start with the larger monthly amount available after FRA.

Delaying after full retirement age

Delayed retirement credits can raise the monthly amount when you wait past FRA. SSA says, “There is no additional benefit increase after you reach age 70, even if you continue to delay starting benefits.” The age-70 estimate is therefore the relevant maximum claiming-age scenario in the SSA comparison, not an instruction to wait until 70.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make the comparison on the same basis

Put the monthly figures in a table with the claim age, projected monthly amount, future earnings assumption, and dollar basis. A larger monthly amount at 70 does not by itself establish that 70 is the best choice: you would receive fewer checks before 70, while an earlier claim provides income sooner. Health, life expectancy, other assets, taxes, spouse or survivor needs, and the need to work are personal factors outside the calculator’s single monthly estimate.

Scenario to record Inputs to keep visible Question it answers
Start at 62 Statement earnings, no or specified future earnings, today’s or future dollars What monthly amount would the earliest standard start produce?
Start at FRA Same earnings and dollar basis as the age-62 run What is the unreduced reference amount?
Start at 70 Same basis, with future earnings entered if you keep working How much larger is the monthly amount if income can wait?
Personal target date Exact month or date and realistic future earnings What does the plan you are actually considering look like?

Choose today’s dollars or future, inflated dollars

SSA’s manual-entry Online Calculator can display results in today’s dollars or in future dollars adjusted for inflation. Today’s dollars express a future payment in current purchasing-power terms, which is usually easier for comparing with today’s expenses. Future, inflated dollars show nominal amounts expected at the future date.

Do not compare a result in today’s dollars with another result in future dollars as though they were directly equivalent. Select one basis for all scenarios, label it in your notes, and use the same basis when discussing a spending plan. If you switch bases, rerun every scenario rather than trying to adjust one number informally.

Separate the date you stop working from the date benefits start

Retirement from work and retirement-benefit claiming are different decisions. You can stop working and delay benefits, continue working and claim benefits, or do either at an age that is not your FRA. SSA’s estimator lets you model future earnings and a separate claim date, so enter both deliberately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, if you plan to stop work at 64 but delay Social Security to 67, use zero future earnings after the stop-work date and a 67 claim date. If you plan to work through 68 and claim at 70, enter plausible earnings for the additional years and compare that result with a no-work-after-64 scenario.

Account for work while receiving benefits

The base estimate is not the whole story when you claim before FRA and continue working. SSA says earnings above the applicable annual limit can cause it to withhold some benefits before FRA. This earnings test is separate from the underlying retirement-benefit calculation.

After FRA, earnings do not reduce the benefit through that earnings test. SSA can recalculate benefits for months in which benefits were withheld or for additional earnings. Because annual limits and the rules for the year you reach FRA can change, check the current SSA explanation for your calendar year instead of applying a remembered threshold.

  • Run the retirement estimate for the age and earnings you expect.
  • Separately check whether your wages before FRA may trigger withholding.
  • Do not subtract an assumed withholding amount from the calculator result without verifying the current rule and limit.

Check for pensions from non-covered work

If you have a pension based on work that was not covered by Social Security, the standard estimate may require an additional adjustment. SSA’s Online Calculator page directs people with a pension from non-covered work to its Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) version. It directs people applying as a spouse or surviving spouse toward the Government Pension Offset (GPO) calculator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The available information does not establish an individualized WEP or GPO result. Use the calculator that matches your situation and provide the pension and covered-work details it requests; do not apply a generic percentage to the Statement amount.

Know what the estimate does not tell you

  • It does not guarantee the final monthly payment. The final amount depends on the record SSA uses when you claim and the rules in effect then.
  • It does not decide the best claiming age for you. The calculators show amounts, while the timing decision also involves cash-flow needs, health, longevity, taxes, dependents, and other income.
  • It does not correct a faulty earnings record automatically. An incorrect year can affect the highest-35 calculation.
  • It does not make a Quick Calculator result equivalent to a personalized Statement-based result.
  • It does not make today’s-dollar and future-dollar figures interchangeable.

A repeatable worksheet for your decision

Keep one worksheet or spreadsheet with these fields for every run:

  • Birth date and the FRA shown for that birth year.
  • Date the Statement was generated and the last earnings year displayed.
  • Any earnings year you are disputing with SSA.
  • Claim age and, if available, the intended month or date.
  • Expected annual covered earnings for each future year.
  • Whether the display uses today’s dollars or future, inflated dollars.
  • Projected monthly amount and the date you ran the calculator.
  • Whether you expect to work while receiving benefits before FRA.
  • Whether a non-covered pension or spouse/survivor claim requires WEP or GPO analysis.

Rerun the worksheet when a new year of earnings posts, your work plans change, you revise the claim date, or SSA updates the calculator’s assumptions. Keep old runs rather than overwriting them so you can see which assumption changed the result.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Using a generic calculator first and stopping there

A rough tool can be useful for orientation, but the Quick Calculator does not access your earnings record and assumes earlier earnings. Use the Statement-based account estimator for the decision-quality comparison.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring zero years

If your record has fewer than 35 years of covered earnings, missing years count as zeros. Check whether continued work could replace a zero or a low indexed year.

Assuming FRA is 65

FRA depends on birth year and reaches 67 for people born in 1960 or later. Verify the exact row, including the January 1 rule.

Comparing mismatched dollar bases

Label every result as today’s dollars or future, inflated dollars. Rerun scenarios on one basis before drawing a conclusion.

Equating stopping work with claiming

Enter the stop-work date and benefit-start date separately. A delayed claim after leaving work can produce a different estimate from an immediate claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forgetting the earnings test

If you work and claim before FRA, check the current earnings-test rules separately from the base estimate. The withholding question is not answered by the monthly figure alone.

What to do next

  1. Sign in to my Social Security and download or review your latest Statement.
  2. Reconcile the earnings history with your records and ask SSA how to correct any discrepancy.
  3. Run age-62, FRA, age-70, and intended-date scenarios using one dollar basis.
  4. Run a second set with realistic future earnings if you may continue working.
  5. Check the earnings test if you would claim before FRA while working.
  6. Use WEP or GPO-specific tools if a non-covered pension or spouse/survivor claim applies.
  7. Save the assumptions and calculator version with the results, then revisit them when your record or plans change.

The result you want is not a single supposedly perfect age. It is a transparent comparison built from a verified earnings record, a clearly identified FRA, explicit future-income assumptions, and one consistent dollar basis. That gives you a number you can use in a broader retirement-income decision without mistaking a projection for a guarantee.
